Delectable dishes at Pietro's Trattoria in Lodi, California Photo Credit: Pietro's Trattoria

Pietro’s Trattoria a Lodi favorite

360 Magazine Culture Editor Tom Wilmer reports from Lodi, California at Pietro’s Trattoria

Pietro’s has been a favorite with Lodi, California locals since the Italian eatery for three decades.

Family owned by Jim and Annette Murdaca, Wilmer stopped in for a visit with their son, Chef Pete who spent a year and a half learning the craft as an stagiaire (intern) in Calabria and Parma Southern Italy.

CLICK HERE to listen to the NPR/KCBX Podcast interview with Chef Pete

Pete Murdoca in the kitchen at Pietro's in Lodi California

Come along and discover how Pete has infused the family Trattoria with an Old-World cooking style predicated on not only sourcing super fresh locally-sourced ingredients, but also harvesting greens from their own garden.

A random sampler of Pietro’s dishes that we savored includes the killer Murdaca’s minestrone soup ($6.50); Capri pizza–with tomato sauce, fior di latte cheese, sausage, basil and calabrian chile ($15); and the Risotto Funghi–Italian rice prepared with portobello, shiitake and white mushrooms topped with truffle oil ($19).

Pietro’s Trattoria is well worth the detour next time your motoring up or down Interstate 5.

RE-ENGINEERING HUMANITY

Everyday new warnings emerge about artificial intelligence rebelling against us. All the while, a more immediate dilemma flies under the radar. Have forces been unleashed that are thrusting humanity down an ill-advised path, one that’s increasingly making us behave like simple machines?

Have a look at the book’s website.

About the Authors

Brett Frischmann is The Charles Widger Endowed University Professor in Law, Business and Economics at Villanova University. He is also an affiliated scholar of the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, and a trustee for the Nexa Center for Internet & Society, Politecnico di Torino. He has published foundational books on the relationships between infrastructural resources, governance, commons, and spillovers.

Evan Selinger is Professor of Philosophy at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he is also the Head of Research Communications, Community, and Ethics at the Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction, and Creativity. A Senior Fellow at the Future of Privacy Forum, his primary research is on the ethical and privacy dimensions of emerging technology. Selinger is a prolific writer and his next anthology is The Cambridge Handbook of Consumer Privacy, co- edited with JulesPolontesky and OmerTene (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2018). A strong advocate of public philosophy, he regularly writes for magazines, newspapers, and blogs, including The Guardian, The Atlantic, Slate, and Wired.

Advance Praise Re-Engineering Humanity

Frischmann and Selinger provide a thoroughgoing and balanced examination of the tradeoffs inherent in offloading tasks and decisions to computers. By illuminating these often intricate and hidden tradeoffs, and providing a practical framework for assessing and negotiating them, the authors give us the power to make wiser choices.

Nicolas Carr, author of The Glass Cage: How Our Computers Are Changing Us, from the Foreword

Re-Engineering Humanity brings a pragmatic if somewhat dystopic perspective to the technological phenomena of our age. Humans are learning machines and we learn from our experiences. This book made me ask myself whether the experiences we are providing to our societies are in fact beneficial in the long run.

Vint Cerf, Co-Inventor of the Internet

Frischmann and Selinger deftly and convincingly show why we should be less scared of robots than of becoming more robotic, ourselves. This book will convince you why it’s so important we embed technologies with human values before they embed us with their own. Douglas Rushkoff, author of Present Shock, Program or Be Programmed, and Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus.

Everybody is suddenly worried about technology. Will social media be the end of democracy? Is automation going to eliminate jobs? Will artificial intelligence make people obsolete? Brett Frischmann and Evan Selinger boldly propose that the problem isn’t the rise of ‘smart’ machines but the dumbing down of humanity. This refreshingly philosophical book asks what’s lost when we outsource our decision-making to algorithmic systems we don’t own and barely understand. Better yet, it proposes conceptual and practical ways to reclaim our autonomy and dignity in the face of new forms of computational control.

Astra Taylor, author of The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Control in the Digital Age

A magnificent achievement. Writing in the tradition of Neil Postman, Jacque Ellul and Marshall McLuhan, this book is the decade’s deepest and most powerful portrayal of the challenges to freedom created by our full embrace of comprehensive techno-social engineering. A rewarding and stimulating book that merits repeated readings and may also cause you to reconsider how you live life.

Tim Wu, Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law, Columbia Law School, and author of The Attention Merchants

ABOUT NESSLY
With a flow as wild as his ever-evolving presence, 22-year-old Nessly immediately draws attention to himself. Two 2016 projects—Still Finessin and Solo Boy Band—introduced the world to his singular style with The Fader asserting, Nessly sets himself apart with his Solo Boy Band project.” Beyond acclaim from Complex, Pigeons and Planes, and Noisey, XXL would go so far as to claim that he takes “his sonics to an untouchable level that will challenge the industry.” Emerging from the fertile Soundcloud battleground, he’s already received support from Drake’s OVO Sound Radio and Pharrell’s OHTERtone in addition to collaborations with everyone from Lil Yachty, Playboi Carti, and A$AP Mob to a tour with Ugly God. He blossoms into the star he was always meant to be on his 2018 major label debut project, WILDFLOWER[Republic Records]. From the woozy chant of the single “Back 2 Life” to the creepy catchiness of “WHOHASIT” [feat. Ski Mask The Slump God] and spacey R&B on “Water Springs” [feat. 24hrs], a very bright future is in bloom for Nessly.

EP INCLUDES NEW SONG “GENTLE FRAME”

DEBUT FULL LENGTH ALBUM COMING IN 2018

Seattle rock ‘n’ roll saviors THUNDERPUSSY unveil their Greatest Tits EP today.

Get it HEREvia Stardog Records/Republic Records.

On the release of the EP the band wants fans to know:

Today we give to you…GREATEST TITS!

The taste tester, tongue teaser, titty twister, force to be reckoned with!

This digital EP features singles off the upcoming self-titled debut record, THUNDERPUSSY. Featuring HITS    so ripe you’ll want to reach out and SQUEEEEZE! Including Speed Queen, Velvet Noose, Torpedo Love, and   introducing new song Gentle Frame.

“I wrote this song during the 2016 political standoff. It was a moment when frustrations were high and women’s voices were once again being shunned, shamed and silenced.

Advances are a daily annoyance for every woman, especially around nightlife. Going out, women are always hit with some unsolicited remark. Gentle Frame is an anthem about being true to yourself, saying fuck you to the cultural pressures, and standing your ground. It’s about not feeling guilty when saying ‘No’ but instead feeling empowered. Gentle Frame is coy yet stern. Amiable yet assertive. Feminine and Fiery. Not being sexually objectified isn’t a feminist issue; it’s a human issue.

Gentle Frame is a reminder to

Never Give Up. Never Give In. Stay True to You.

Peace,

M”

But this is just the tit of the iceberg, folks…

Hold tight, listen loud, and prepare yourself for the life-giving, fire-breathing, Thunderpussy FULL-LENGTH ALBUM coming soon!

The new song “Gentle Frame” follows up the recently released “Torpedo Love, which NPR called, “a song that’s slower than most of their catalog but retaining their trademark charisma – a flourish of flair to partner every slashing riff and volcanic chorus. Check out the amazing video shot at the abandoned Satsop Nuclear Power Plant here!

Be on the lookout for more form Thunderpussy soon!

Thunderpussy. If Thor’s Hammer of the Gods from “Immigrant Song” landed in the hands of four wise, willful, and wild women? Well, it would sound something like Thunderpussy. The quartet—Molly Sides [vocals], Whitney Petty [guitar], Leah Julius [bass], and Ruby Dunphy [drums]—do the most rock ‘n’ roll thing possible and quite literally fuck up every rock ‘n’ roll stereotype you know to be true, piercing the halls of Valhalla in the process. The Seattle-based group turned into a quiet phenomenon with the endorsement of Rolling Stone and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready as well as a string of already legendary performances under their high-waisted belts.

BERMUDA STYLE

Bermuda Style at Sixty LES

by Frank Pena

edit Vaughn Lowery

photo Dmonte Brown

The City of New York had a Bermuda Style Session which left a lasting impression. The essence of Bermuda was captured throughout the interior and decor of the locale. Floral pattern seating coupled with pops of pineapples alongside of tropical wallpaper, featuring their iconic fruit.

The ambiance was set with a skillful mix of throwbacks, Soca and Bermudian classics. And, DJ Damon DeGraff really worked the turntables! The music persuaded attendees to two-step, yet tranquil enough to hold a conversation. The guests consisted of the following: Bermuda Tourism Authority; Bermudian, Creative Artist and Sip & Stroke instructor Alshante Foggo; natives displaying their brands and the honorable Bermuda Minister of Tourism and Economic Development, Mr. Jahmal Simmons.

This event threw a great reflection on their culture. The 24-mile long island has an immense sense of fashion, music and adventure for tourist engagement.
