How to Use Nervous Energy to Your Advantage

Editing a speech so many times that when you’re about to present, you botch all your important lines. Stressing over your first-date outfit because it just isn’t perfect — to the point that you’re now late…and more frazzled than before. Drawing that same illustration a third time to get it to look exactly the way you want but ultimately ripping the page out of your sketchbook, frustrated and, well, over it.

If any of these scenarios feel even remotely familiar, you could be dealing with a crushing dose of what I call nervous energy. But the good news is: This type of seemingly negative energy can actually give you an edge when it comes to success. I’m so passionate about helping people understand and achieve this that I recently wrote an entire book about it, Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety. In it, you’ll find nine techniques that will enable you to not only be more successful despite your nervous energy, but because of it.

What Is Nervous Energy, Anyway?

Nervous energy is that extra bit of conscientiousness, typically as a result of adrenaline, that drives you to triple-check that your oven is turned off, or that your cover letter is grammatically perfect, or that your dinner party (when we’re finally able to safely have those again) is thought out to a T. All of those are good things, of course — until your nerves go on overdrive and lead you to stress out so much that you hinder your ability to perform. That shot of adrenaline gets converted into cortisol (a stress hormone) rather than being used productively.

Unsurprisingly, people who have nervous energy tend to be perfectionists, the detail-oriented, often Type-A folks who are really hard on themselves (and sometimes others) to get things exactly right. People who have generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or have obsessive tendencies without the medical diagnosis, also usually fall into this category. And while these groups may think of their condition as annoying (at best) or crippling (at worst), the exciting thing that they may not realize is that their anxious thoughts have an incredibly healthy, positive function: to notice areas for improvement.

What’s even more exciting is that utilizing that nervous energy as a boost in chasing your goals — versus taking steam away from them — is actually quite simple. One of my favorite techniques in my book, based on years of working with many high-functioning yet anxious clients, is called Thought Replacement. This method can help you turn the mess that is anxiety into momentum in real time.

How to Try Thought Replacement at Home

Next time your anxious mind starts acting up (like tonight, when you start harping on yourself for, say, screwing up a recipe), here’s your game plan:

  1. Congratulate yourself for having anxious thoughts.
    Yes, I said congratulate! It might sound counterintuitive to applaud yourself when you’re feeling negative feelings, but truly the best way to interrupt that self-bashing spiral is by patting yourself on the back for being aware of your tendency to pick yourself apart. This is the moment before the date when you tell yourself, “Wow, I’m hearing myself insult the way my body looks in these clothes. At least I’m a self-aware and conscious person for realizing I’m thinking that way.” Remember, your anxiety is coming from a positive place — of wanting to be the best version of yourself — so shift your perspective to feeling good about yourself for having it.
  2. Replace the anxious thoughts you have with reassuring ones.

If you’re a high-functioning person with obsessive tendencies, chances are, you have the same anxious thoughts on repeat. Your mind has more or less decided something isn’t good enough — be it your hair, your skin, your business chops — and so it cycles through the same worrying, self-doubting script every time that “thing” is on your conscience. That’s where a technique called Thought Replacement comes in. It zeroes in on the specific thoughts that are getting in your way and prepares you with deliberately chosen, constructive phrases to replace them. To stick with the first date example, if you’re obsessing over your hair before you walk out the door, then think, this person is obviously attracted to me or they wouldn’t have asked me on a date. If you always worry about not being vocal enough in meetings, then think, I wouldn’t be invited into this discussion if my team didn’t feel I belonged here. I can speak up just when I feel I have something to contribute.

Keep in mind, Thought Replacement is not always the most natural-feeling thing. And that’s OK, in the same way that if you slouch for most of your life and then suddenly start sitting up straight that would feel unnatural too. That doesn’t make proper posture any less healthy or positive for you. The same applies here: You were in a counterproductive place before. Now you have the stark awareness that you’re doing things differently, that you’re making real changes. This should make you feel great.

The more you practice this two-step process, the easier it will come to you, until eventually the positive thoughts become more automatic than the negative ones you used to have. When that happens, all that nervous energy starts to feed a healthy obsessive thought cycle — one that builds confidence and motivation to go for your goals.

Chloe Carmichael, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist, best known to audiences as Dr. Chloe, and author of “Nervous Energy: Harness the Power of Your Anxiety” (St. Martin’s Essentials, 2021). She heads a successful private practice in New York City that focuses primarily on relationship issues, stress to help high achievers. Carmichael is on the Advisory Board for Women’s Health Magazine and writes an expert blog for Psychology Today. She is a member in good standing of the American Psychological Association and the National Register of Health Psychologists, an elite membership for psychologists with the highest standards of education and board scores. As an expert in anxiety, Carmichael has taught stress management techniques at Fortune 500 companies as well as in her own private practice. While a doctoral student, Carmichael presented a poster at the Anxiety Disorder Association of America, and continues to be a thought leader in anxiety treatment today. She launched an online anxiety treatment program, Anxiety Tools, which has users throughout the United States and around the world including Japan, Dubai, U.A.E., Korea, France and Russia. As a certified yoga instructor, Carmichael is truly an expert in both the science and meditation side to anxiety treatment. Her holistic approach integrates a special blend of techniques that have been shown to help people overcome anxiety. Is Gambling Responsibly Simply a Myth?

Recreational gambling can be a fun and entertaining activity for many people, but it can sometimes tip the scales into problematic behavior for others. The adrenaline rush of a big bet and the thrill of winning a jackpot keep many coming back for more, even when they shouldn’t.

We’ve all seen advertisements for “responsible gambling” on television in our daily lives but what does that actually mean? And more importantly, is this even possible? 

What is Responsible Gambling?

Responsible gambling is defined as: “Exercising control and informed choice to ensure that gambling is kept within affordable limits of money and time, is enjoyable, in balance with other activities and responsibilities, and avoids gambling-related harm.”

This ubiquitous phrase is used to remind players of the importance of maintaining a clear head when playing the odds. Essentially it references the age old saying “It is just a game,” urging players to stay in touch with reality. This idea, however, has been criticized for being a myth that is impossible to achieve, especially for players that struggle with addiction or lack of self-control. 

Top 6 Ways to Gamble Responsibly

Responsible gamblers know the risks involved with gambling and think of it as a cost of the entertainment, just like going out to dinner, the movies, or going on a vacation. Setting out on any excursion with a fixed budget makes smart fiscal sense in every aspect of life — and gambling is no different. 

Just as you would not invite your friends out to a 5-star restaurant that you knew you could not afford, gambling without mental and financial safety precautions is a recipe for disaster. In order to gamble responsibly, take charge by following some simple tips before you set out.

1. Learn the Rules and Odds of the Games that You Play

Hobbyists know their favorite pastimes better than anyone else in the world. Knowledge of your leisure pursuits is a great way to not let them get the best of you, especially when it comes to real-money gambling. 

When choosing a game to play, make sure you’re well-versed in the rules, the casino’s guidelines, and best practices involved in a given game. And whether it’s roulette or blackjack, bear in mind the odds to make an informed decision and your best bet. Being prepared is always the best bet.

2. Don’t Play with Money You Don’t Have

You wouldn’t spend your rent money on a designer handbag or an unreasonable car lease. Likewise, you should never use money to gamble that you need for your living expenses. Remembering priorities is essential.

Responsible gamblers never play with money that they aren’t willing to lose. As an entertainment expense, any losses simply add up to a fun evening out with friends, not serious financial problems the next day.

3. Set a Time Limit

If you’re worried that you might get carried away, a good rule of thumb is to set a time limit for how long you’re able to gamble before it’s time to call it quits. When you’re having a fun evening, it can be easy to lose track of time. By setting an alarm and having a hard end to your playing is a smart idea before you get started.

4. Set a Money Limit

Setting a dollar limit for yourself before you start playing is one of the smartest things you can do to gamble responsibly. 

Some online casinos have a loss limit feature that allows you to program in a maximum amount that you’re willing to lose in a given time before the system prevents you from placing another bet. The loss limit feature works very well for some people but for many, it doesn’t work at all. For many, they hit the limit and simply join another casino. If this is you, consider alternate means of self-control and consider asking for assistance.

5. Don’t Gamble Under the Influence

With a great game plan for responsible gambling and a fun time ahead, it would be a shame to throw away all of your best intentions by getting inebriated and failing to follow your own guidelines.

Gambling responsibly can be an exciting and entertaining activity but without a clear head, some players may unintentionally go a bit overboard. Gambling culture, especially in-person, often encourages players to drink while they play. A glass of wine or a single beer while playing might not be disastrous, but it is important to comprehend your limits.

6. Never Play Because You Need to Win

Problem gamblers sometimes fall into the trap of using gambling to make money they need for their day-to-day lives. It is always a bad idea and can lead to serious problems, especially with something as random as chance itself. Make sure even as you play, you are grounded in reality.

Play Smart

These suggestions are not foolproof, however, and can be quickly thrown out the window when a player is in trouble with their gambling, whether through a serious addiction or fear of financial ruin. It is important to consider your circumstances, your headspace, and your ability to stick to a plan before even going near a casino. 

Responsible Gambling Can Be Possible

Knowing yourself is key. If you know that you’re not able to follow your own prescribed rules, gambling responsibly may not be possible for you to do successfully. Maintaining a healthy relationship with your hobbies and leisure activities is essential.

As you can see, however, it is possible to gamble responsibly if you’re able to stick to a plan. By maintaining these standards, responsible gambling can be just like any other form of paid entertainment. If one approaches it with a clear head and knows their limits, a good time can be had by all.

Avoid Clinical Entrepreneurial Syndrome

Whether you are running your own business as an entrepreneur – or running someone else’s business as an executive – there is an enormous amount of demand on your resources. You are likely to be playing the role of project manager, human resources liaison, accountant, and marketing specialist. You are the one who gets called on to extinguish fires as well as create new opportunities. All this and more, while remaining positive and energetic.

As enthusiastic as you may be about keeping the business afloat, it’s a fact that humans have a limited amount of resources available. When the demands upon us begin to exceed the energy levels that we have, we experience stress. This feeling is akin to a form of panic – and has a way of creeping into our daily operations. It lies under the surface of our consciousness, and slowly eats away at our resolve. In small doses, it can help us to accomplish great things. In large doses, and if left unaddressed, it can result in our physical and mental decline.

Stress Leads To Burnout

This doesn’t happen overnight. Those who are aware of the possibility of burnout may be able to feel it developing. Burnout is the eventual result of unresolved stress, and it is a warning sign from the mind and body that enough is enough. It is the point at which we decide that we can no longer perform the job functions in which we once took pride. We may begin to avoid work, produce lower quality work, or suddenly quit the job altogether.

The signs of stress which contribute to burnout include fatigue, insomnia, irritability, changes in weight, problems with digestion, becoming forgetful, and inability to concentrate. If you notice that these symptoms are becoming part of your daily experience, take it as a sign that something needs to change. If you aren’t able to change your workload in the face of stress, look into ways of changing your behaviors during your valuable time off. Failure to do so can mean the end of your venture as a successful business manager.

Avoid Burnout Through Being Proactive

As the stress that leads to burnout tends to attack us on three fronts – physical, cognitive, and emotional – the following are three ways to mitigate its negative effects.

Combat Stress on the Physical Level

The adrenaline and cortisol that the body produces in response to stress are responsible for activating our flight-or-fight response. These hormones prepare our bodies for action. When we fail to use this energy in an active way, it can turn on us and wreak havoc with our physical health. To disseminate that energy in a way that is best for the body, try engaging in similar actions as experienced in emergency situations – like going for a run or boxing it out at the gym.

Master Stress on the Cognitive Level

Much of what we interpret as being stressful depends on our perspective. What we have defined as our values and aspirations can fuel our sense of purpose, and that purpose can become an obsession. If we have tied our sense of self-esteem into our occupational achievements, we can become overwhelmed with producing results. To reduce that stress, which we experience over job demands and deadlines, we need to create a mental space where we are able to separate from those types of thoughts. Consider finding mental relief through engaging in meditation or mindfulness techniques on a daily basis. Venting that stress through consulting with a good therapist each week is another possibility.

Diminish Stress on the Emotional Level

Human beings need to have fun. When we engage in pleasurable activities, our body responds through releasing endorphins such as oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine. Unlike the urgent feelings which stress hormones produce, these types of natural chemicals result in our feeling happy, calm, and content. Keep in mind that it is unlikely that you will be able to remove all the stress associated with running a business by having fun. But you can counteract some of it by making sure to schedule time in your busy calendar for engagement in recreational activities.

Maya Temples

Caracol: Located on the western edge of the Maya Mountains within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol lies on a high plateau that drops into a deep valley to the northwest and rises into hilly terrain to the southwest. The site was discovered in 1938 by Rosa Mai, a logger looking for mahogany. Although one of the most challenging Belize ruins to reach, the trip to Caracol is also one of the most scenic drives. It is the largest known Maya center within the country and holds “Canaa” (Sky Place), the largest pyramid or man-made structure in Belize at 140 feet tall.

Cahal Pech: Located on a hill that overlooks the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, excavations show that Cahal Pech was inhabited from 1000 B.C. to around 800 A.D. The central part of the ruins provides a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding area. Thirty-four structures, including temple pyramids, two ball courts, and an altar fill the 2 acre area.

Five of America’s largest airlines have nonstop flights to Belize from major cities across the country, making it easily accessible for US travelers.

ABOUT K. ROOSEVELT:

Born Kevin Roosevelt Moore II and raised in Los Angeles, his evolution as an artist is best articulated by the advice of his father, renowned blues musician Keb’ Mo’, who told his son, “Follow your dharma.” As a child often on tour with his dad, K. Roosevelt frequently found himself in the mist of some of the world’s great musicians and singers.

His formal music education began in middle school and continued at Hamilton Performing Arts High School. AMAZON’S THE GRAND TOUR

Amazon uncovered a few fun facts about Prime members who have streamed The Grand Tour, and we’re spreading the word on where to get inspiration for your next trip to the great outdoors. These trends were obtained by comparing the purchase behavior of a sample of 100K Grand Tour viewers on Amazon to that of 100K Non-Grand Tour viewers.

Amazon learned Grand Tour viewers are more likely to seek extreme outdoor hobbies and live in areas known for adventure in the great outdoors than those Prime members who haven’t streamed the show yet. In 2017, Grand Tour viewers spent 24% more in Amazon’s Sports & Outdoor store than an average non-Grand Tour viewer. And these Grand Tour viewers are not just novices of the outdoors; they purchased more brands for top outdoor athletes and serious outdoor enthusiasts including GoPro, Black Diamond, Osprey, Patagonia and Thule than did non-Grand Tour viewers. The largest percentage differences in spend on outdoor equipment between Grand Tour viewers and non-Grand Tour viewers were on cycling gear (53%), rock climbing gear (45%) and skiing and snowboarding gear (44%).

It is no surprise Grand Tour viewers in the US are living in places that are known as gateways to adventure. Washington – home of Mt. Rainier, Olympic National Park and neighbor to the Pacific Ocean, andColorado – land of the Rocky Mountains and Mesa Verde National Park, had the highest number of Grand Tour season two viewers per capita in the US. These states have an abundance of activities for those seeking an outdoor and adventurous lifestyle.

Grand Tour viewers are more likely to drive cars that are compact and adventure-ready and steer clear of the family cars. When purchasing automobile parts in Amazon’s Automotive store, customers can add information about their current car to the Amazon Garage for shopping parts and accessories designed specifically for that vehicle. The Subaru Impreza was the top car model that was more likely to be added to a Grand Tour viewer’s garage than a Non-Grand Tour viewer’s in 2017.

TRACK DAY WITH LIFERUSH ADVENTURES

Slingshot®, the three-wheeled, open-air cockpit roadster that has taken the industry to the edge since its introduction in 2014, today announced its 2018 model lineup with select offerings boasting its industry-leading Ride Command® infotainment system. Headlining the 2018 models is the all-new Slingshot SLR LE. Representing the biggest improvements since its introduction, the new Slingshot lineup takes style, performance, and technology to a whole new level. 

The 2018 Slingshot lineup consists of Slingshot S, SL, SLR and SLR LE. The all new, industry-leading 7” multi-touch Ride Command is available as an accessory for Slingshot S, and comes standard in SL, SLR, and SLR LE models. Ride Command is equipped with great features like phone integration, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and customizable vehicle information screens. Additionally, Ride Command offers turn-by-turn navigation in the SLR and SLR LE models as standard equipment and can be added as an accessory upgrade to the S and SL models.

Slingshot’s ultra-premium SLR LE packs a suite of offerings, including BILSTEIN 10-way adjustable suspension, 200w Rockford Fosgate® audio, premium sport seats with color-matched side bolsters, two-tone Ghost Gray with Lime Squeeze painted accents, and special edition graphics.

Slingshot’s 2018 models offer an unmatched riding experience at a variety of price points that will begin to reach dealers in September 2017. The Slingshot S will be available starting at $19,999 in Gloss Black, an entry-level price point making it a more affordable means to experience an exhilarating driving experience only Slingshot can provide. Starting at $25,499, the SL will come in Navy Blue and Sunset Red, while the SLR starts at $28,999 and introduces a new Electric Blue color to the line-up. The popular SLR Orange Madness will continue for 2018. In a limited run, the Slingshot SLR LE will be available starting at $30,999 in a two-tone Ghost Gray with Lime-Squeeze painted accents.

Owners can personalize and customize their Slingshot with dozens of Slingshot Engineered Accessories, including premium 200-watt Rockford Fosgate audio kit, quilted comfort seats or add custom style with the all new rear fender*. Additionally, owners can add Slingshot’s industry-leading Ride Command system to their Slingshot S, or enhance their S or SL’s capabilities by adding the Ride Command Navigation system. Most of the vehicle accessories are offered in a variety of factory color-matched options, which allow consumers to truly customize their Slingshots.
