What Are the Top Treatment Options for Anxiety?

Are you someone who struggles with anxiety? If so, you are not alone. There are lots of people who struggle to deal with anxiety, and there are plenty of treatment options available. If you struggle with anxiety, one of the first things you need to remember is that you need to talk to a mental health professional. A mental health professional can take a look at your specific type of anxiety and customize a treatment option to meet your needs. Fortunately, there are lots of ways you can manage your anxiety. What are some of the key points you need to keep in mind if you are looking for anxiety treatment?

Therapy Is the Cornerstone of Treatment

First, understand that therapy is the cornerstone treatment option when it comes to anxiety. Therapy is important because it can help you understand why you suffer from anxiety. If you can get to the root cause of your issues, you might be able to develop a treatment plan to address them. If you are having trouble finding a therapist to help you manage anxiety, you should reach out to your primary care doctor. He or she might be able to provide you with a referral to a therapist in the area. The hardest thing about therapy is taking that first step. Once you get in a rhythm, therapy can dramatically help you improve your ability to manage anxiety.

Understand Abortive vs. Preventative Medication

Next, you must understand the difference between abortive and preventative medications. Both of these medications can be helpful in managing anxiety. As the name suggests, abortive medication can help you abort an acute panic attack. Some of the most common symptoms of a panic attack include rapid breathing, a high heart rate, sweating, and an impending feeling of doom. If you are developing a panic attack, short-term benzodiazepines might help you stop this in its tracks. Your doctor may prescribe you a short-term benzodiazepine in the event of a panic attack; however, you do not necessarily have to use them. A lot of people feel better just knowing they’re there.

On the other hand, you may need to take preventative medication as well. These medications are designed to prevent you from developing a panic attack. These are medications you may need to take every day. Many of these are long-term benzodiazepines; however, if you do not want to take this class of medication, there are other options available. What you need to do is talk to your mental health professional about options that can help you prevent panic attacks from taking place.

Build a Strong Support System

Furthermore, you need to build a strong support system. One of the biggest reasons why people develop anxiety is that they feel like they have to face their problems on their own. You need to find ways to build strong relationships with your family members and friends. That way, if you are feeling stressed, you have someone you can talk to. If you feel like you don’t have to face everything on your own, you might have an easier time managing symptoms of anxiety. It can be difficult to build a strong support system because you have to open up to others about your internal feelings. Therapy can help you overcome this challenge.

Give CBD a Try

Finally, you might want to consider getting CBD a try. CBD stands for cannabidiol, and a lot of people use it to manage mental health issues. It can also be helpful for managing anxiety. If you are interested in giving CBD a try, you may want to take a look at Weedmaps to learn more about some of the dispensaries in the area. Then, you can talk to a professional at one of the dispensaries and find a CBD product that might work well for you. Before you try CBD for the first time, you should keep your therapist in the loop. Let your mental health professional know that you are thinking about trying CBD for anxiety.

Find a Way To Treat Anxiety

In the end, there are lots of people who suffer from anxiety. Therefore, if you are dealing with anxiety, there are lots of people who can relate to what you are going through. Furthermore, there are mental health professionals who can help you manage anxiety. It is important for you to talk to others because you can build the skills you need to cope with symptoms of anxiety. That way, you may be able to leave prescription medications in the rearview mirror. Finally, there are other treatment options as well. For example, you may want to try CBD. There might be some local dispensaries in the area, so consider trying CBD to help you manage anxiety. This can help you improve your quality of life.

Brianna Colette Q×A

Soulmate Coach, Brianna Colette Launches “Relationship Rehab”

“When people come to me, their love life has become stagnant, and they don’t know why. It usually means they are living in a belief system of fears and old trauma. I work to upgrade their belief system about what is available to them and what they think they deserve. When you don’t know how to love yourself you will end up settling for someone who doesn’t know how to love you either.”

Brianna Colette is an intuitive relationship healer and soulmate medium who helps guide her clients to connect with their inner self to focus more on a higher sense of self love to grow stronger connections and relationships, ultimately leading them to finding and experiencing the most preeminent of bonds: soulmate love.

We got the opportunity to speak with Brianna last week about what she does, providing insight and a chance to learn about the background to this profession.

What led you to this calling?

In 2017, I witnessed a violent murder of a family by their adult son. I was able to save the lives of two people, but I suffered mentally and emotionally as result. At the same time, the relationship that I thought would be my anchor abruptly ended and only further triggered my abandonment issues. I struggled with PTSD, depression, panic attacks, and anxiety. I had sunk so low I started having suicidal thoughts. It was then I knew I needed more than talk therapy. This near-death experience was the catalyst for my spiritual awakening and learning about different healing modalities. I started addressing relationship patterns and healing the relationship I had with myself.

Do you think your past relationships have helped you curate how you help others?

100%. Everything that I guide my clients through, I have personally healed and integrated for myself. From trust issues, attachment dynamics to abandonment trauma. Everything I share comes from real-life experience (negative, positive, etc.).

Do you recommend people who believe they are in solid and grounded relationships to come to see you?

If your relationship has a good foundation of trust, communication, love, and respect with no major issues, congrats! But even the relationship that looks good on the outside can have its issues. If you feel like you’re not getting your needs met, aren’t feeling heard like you’re constantly having the same fight over and over, lines are being crossed and you’re not sure how to shift it, come talk to me.

Do you think relationship issues lie mostly in their past?

Absolutely. Each of us comes to the relationship with a “template” so to speak. It is compiled of all our conditioning, trauma, belief systems, and ideas about love and relationships. And whatever we’re carrying around, whatever it is that’s unhealed ends up being dumped into the relationship.

What about the present?

New variables might come into the mix that is out of our control (loss of a job, family stressors, children, etc.), but how we deal with them is usually based on the tools that we have in our ‘emotional toolbox.’

How in-depth are your sessions?

They can go pretty deep, actually. But it all depends on how in-depth a client is willing to go. I always respect a person’s boundaries but will be as transparent as possible in a kind way if I see something. A lot of our issues are hiding in our subconscious mind- behaviors, patterns etc. And sometimes all that’s needed is the awareness around it to heal it and change the behavior.

Did your journey in helping other people find self-love begins first with finding your own?

For the longest time, I wanted so badly to love and accept myself. I was so critical of myself and had a lot of negative self-talk. I used to feel so unlovable. It’s sad but true. People were always talking about self-love, but I didn’t know how to ‘get’ there. Through my own process of healing my self-worth, I learned what self-love and acceptance really mean. I was able to really lock in a logical and tangible way to heal and create a ‘formula’ so to speak.

Do you think you found self-love by helping others?

No, the self-love came from digging deep and addressing why I had such a low opinion of myself. Why I was willing to accept less. I had to heal myself first before I could help others. In the healing world, we always say you must heal from the scar, not the wound. Meaning you must heal first before you go helping others.

Did you always believe this would be something you saw yourself doing in the future, or did it just kind of come to you?

Absolutely not! If you would’ve told me 5 years ago that I would be teaching and healing others something I had been painfully and quietly suffering with for years, I never would’ve believed you. This kind of work is a force you can’t ignore. It’s a purpose that keeps nagging in your ear until you do something about it.

Did this career always correspond with what you thought you were going to be growing up?

Looking back, yes it makes sense. I was a hairstylist for 15 years and always had a gift for helping people see how beautiful they really are. So many of my clients said sitting in my chair was like a therapy session that you left feeling good about yourself afterward. I’ve always been able to see someone’s inner beauty and potential and bring that to the surface. Help them discover the unique beauty and highlight that for the world to see. And to be honest I think there’s nothing more powerful than a woman who feels beautiful in her own skin.

No matter what form of love complications her clients may have, Brianna first establishes where their inability to achieve happiness stems from so that they may begin with most importantly repairing self-worth. Whether that be past traumas, personal frustrations, or unsuccessful work/life experiences, Brianna highlights the way her clients show up in non-romantic relationships because they can often reflect their limitations within their relationships in general. Examining her clients’ old belief systems allows Brianna to focus on any client’s possible wounds from childhood, inherited family dynamics, or fear surrounding vulnerability.

Once Brianna examines their past, she helps her clients make peace with old wounds and break free from any self-sabotaging toxic patterns, guiding them on how to release fear and create the right conditions for a higher frequency of love. Brianna’s passion stems from her own personal experiences and growth, continuously evolving her ability to intuitively heal and help clients enter a fulfilling relationship and their most aligned love life ever. By fusing modern therapies and energetic healing modalities, her clients can discover their authentic self and rewrite their futures to achieve and experience the kind of relationships & love that we all desire.

Top Ten Things to Know When Moving into Your First Apartment

By: Skyler Johnson

Moving into your first apartment can be a very stressful experience. From taking care of your electricity bill to installing Wi-Fi, there’s a lot to consider. Here are the top ten things to know.

  1. Be Aware of Space

This doesn’t just mean measuring your couch, it also means knowing which outlets are connected to a switch and how much closet space you have. Knowing where to plug in a lamp should be one of the first things you need to understand, as it can make life much easier down the road in terms of the arrangement of furniture and electronics. Keeping track of where each closet is can also allow for a serious consolidation of space. Find ways to maximize your closet space HERE.

  1. Make a Grocery List

While this may seem like it’s self-explanatory, it’s not something you ever want to forget, especially if you’re hungry. Chances are you’re not going to remember all the ingredients to a certain dish or dishes you’re making. Making this list should be something you do once or twice a week to make sure you don’t take more trips to the grocery store than you need.

  1. Choose Your Meal Plan Carefully

Going grocery shopping is something you’ll have to do every week and making a list of meals is essential. However, ingredients can be expensive if you’re not choosing correctly. Therefore, it’s important to only buy products you’re going to use at least twice. That way, you can save money in terms of how much you buy. If you’re buying zucchini, make sure to use it both for a fried zucchini and a pasta with zucchini and pesto. If you have the money, but not the time to shop, check out Instacart, where you can have someone go shopping for you.

  1. Keep the Lights Off

Remember, you have an electricity bill now. Make sure not to keep the lights on for too long or that bill will start to seriously increase. Make sure to turn off all lights when leaving the apartment, but make leave a light on when using a phone or laptop, as that’s been proven to deteriorate your eyesight.

  1. Keep Organized

Keeping organized might be something you’re already semi-aware of, but you’re operating on a much larger scale now. Putting shoes in their proper place and keeping brooms and mops in a closet or contained area can help you in the long run especially when doing chores. Having to scrounge through all your belongings to find a simple thing is a mild inconvenience when it happens one time in your room or dorm, but it becomes more of an issue when everything you have becomes lost.

  1. Remember to Get Fresh Air

With your apartment, unlike with your dorm or house, you don’t have to do much moving around for long periods. The kitchen is right there and doesn’t require as much walking as in a house. Nevertheless, it is good to get out of the house at least once a day. Social isolation can lead to depression.

  1. Magnets, Tupperware, and Air Freshener

These are all things you might not think you need, but you will. Magnets are great for your fridge. They can be used to hang up notes, grocery lists, and even hand towels. Plus, they make great decorations. Tupperware is good for storing food, which will become necessary. It’s always good to have leftovers, especially for busy study/work nights. Even for the nose blind, an air freshener is great for kitchen smells which will permeate a small space.

  1. Know how to do Laundry

Most apartment complexes have some form of a laundry room, and it’s important to know where yours is located, and more importantly how much it costs. You don’t want to be stuck with a lot of clothes to be washed without know how to wash them. Some laundry machines are more intuitive than others. For example, some may use Shine, a platform that allows for easy mobile payments for laundry. You can find out if your complex uses one by checking if there’s a baby blue sticker on the machine.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid to Make Cooking Mistakes

Cooking is one of the many things that are unique to moving into your first apartment, and while you may liken yourself to be a chef, try doing it every night. Food preparation mistakes are common but can also be great learning experiences. Either way, there’s always take-out if your food is inedible.

  1. Give yourself Space

When first moving into your apartment, you will have to deal with a lot of anxiety from living on your own. It’s not an easy transition, and you shouldn’t expect it to be. If you can, take a few days off from working to transition into your new space and get used to your environment. You won’t regret it.

Athletes for CARE Supports Mental Health in Professional Sport

Olympians and Professional Athletes are setting new standards for personal care and well-being to protect their mental health, disrupting intense pressure and expectation

Athletes for CARE (“A4C” or the “Organization”) is a nonprofit organization working since 2017 with current and former athletes to address the long term impact of the mental and physical toll a career in sport takes on athletes. A4C advocates for the removal of stigmas surrounding mental health and personal well-being in sport, as well as for treatment options. A4C applauds and supports the challenging decisions made by Olympic athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka in the past weeks to protect their mental health and well-being. Their outspoken bravery sets a precedent encouraging others to reinforce that no athlete must suffer alone in silence on, or after leaving, the world stage.

A4C is committed to fostering resilience and support for mental health challenges faced by current and former professional athletes. To further this mission, the organization is proud to announce a collaboration with the Post-Game Players’ Lounge (“PPL” or the “Partner”), a program devoted to supporting retired athletes who are finding themselves, for the first time, in a world that isn’t solely dominated by participation in professional and team sport.

“PPL is excited to collaborate with A4C to help bring the mental health aspect of athletics to the forefront! While traditional sports psychology focuses on athletes’ success on the field, PPL is shifting their focus to helping athletes succeed off the field,” says Dr. Shannon McHugh, PsyD., co-founder of PPL.

“Athletes for CARE is committed to helping athletes find success in life after a career in sport,” said Anna Valent, Executive Director A4C. “We have worked for years on a one-on-one basis to address barriers to success and help athletes find support, opportunity and purpose in life after a career in sport. We are excited to work with the Post-Game Players’ Lounge to bring this program that focuses on mental health at no charge to any athlete from any sport.”

“A4C was there to support me through some dark times after my football career ended.” said Jamie Brown, A4C Athlete Ambassador and NFL Superbowl Champion. “I am excited that A4C and PPL are partnering to create a safe space where you can share anything in a group of people who understand how you are feeling. It helps connect the dots whether you are struggling with finances, or purpose or anything.”

The program, led by former athletes who are now mental health professionals, includes a 16-week program for athletes and will grow to include programs for spouses, partners and families of athletes. Athletes who complete the program will also be invited to participate in a leadership development program to continue their mental health journey. In addition to the weekly program, athletes needing additional support will receive individual care plans that will also be supported through A4C. Many athletes struggle with mental, physical, and financial health during and after a career in sport. It is difficult to navigate how and where to get help, especially when coming from a unique industry and usually without a transition plan or health insurance.

About Athletes for CARE

Athletes for CARE (A4C) is a nonprofit organization launched in 2017 by passionate retired professional athletes who recognized the need to advocate for the health, safety and wellness of more than 2 billion people of all ages who compete annually in sanctioned sports globally. Through that advocacy, we are improving health and wellness options for the billions of people around the world living with mental and physical illnesses including chronic pain, depression, anxiety, PTSD, CTE, TBI, substance abuse and opioid dependency.

About Post-Game Players Lounge

The Players’ Lounge was created with a collaboration between psychologists Dr. Shannon McHugh and Dr. Jesi Sasaki, B.J. Williams, the founder of Can I Be Vulnerable (an organization aimed toward reducing the stigma of mental health for black men and boys), and occupational therapist Dr. Madison Harris, who specializes in helping athletes with their retirement transition. Started as a safe space for former NFL players to come together and talk about their mental health and post-career journey, now turned into a program that all former athletes can access and benefit from as they transition out of their athletic career. PPL provides mental wellness tips and techniques to group members and collaborate with partnering neuropsychologists and occupational therapists to provide relatable information to help athletes develop a playbook for retirement that prioritizes their mental and physical wellness post-sport.

It is interesting to note that this selection was purely objective and not intentionally in favor of any specific brands. The criteria for selection are as follows:

Hemp source

It is expedient that when you want to buy CBD Gummies, whether, in person or online, you check for any information on the hemp plant that they used. This is because many brands are using poorly grown and adulterated versions of the plant, which may end up giving you poor-quality products with unverified constituents. The brands selected in this article are well-known brands that use the right plant.

Third-party lab reports

Any legitimate brand is not usually afraid of third-party testing since they have a genuine product. Thus, testing a product using an independent laboratory is a crucial step for selecting a brand for the Best CBD Gummies for anxiety. The result of the third-party testing should be consistent with those on the brand’s site.

Quality of the ingredient

We made sure to pick only brands with the best quality ingredients. Almost all the brands out there will promise you that they have the best compositions, but only a few meet up the task. We have chosen brands with the highest concentrations of CBD, lowest of concentration (and of course standard proof concentration) of THC. As well as small amounts of preservatives and other secondary ingredients that will give the product a nice taste and flavoring, but do not reduce the effect of the main ingredient.

Strength of the product

Since it is from a high-quality hemp plant and the best materials available, it is a no-brainer that these products would perform their functions to the fullest. Have in mind that these companies received vetting so their products are the best when it comes to CBD Gummies used for anxiety treatment or management.

Brand transparency

The brands we have selected make use of the right materials and so they got nothing to hide. More so, their customer reviews will also confirm what we have said about them. What Really Is Anxiety All About?

Anxiety disorder is the most common mental issue in the United States, affecting more than 40 million people that are 18 or older. It is normal to feel anxious, but when it begins to disrupt your normal activities and functioning, it becomes an issue. Another difficulty associated with anxiety is seeking help. Many persons that are having anxiety and its disorder do not like going for the proper treatment and this, sometimes, maybe due to discrimination and things alike. A combination of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and medication may be effective in the management of anxiety. However, close observations show that lots of persons used CBD products to relieve their anxiety symptoms. Well, if you are using it, why not enjoy it. This is where CBD Gummies come in. You enjoy yourself while relieving your anxiety symptoms.

Key Facts that Make CBD Gummies Exceptionally Good for Anxiety Relief

CBD Gummies and all other CBD products come from the hemp plant and, as such, possess some level of relaxation and anti-anxiety properties. They perform this function through the regulation of the endocannabinoid system (EDS), which is a vital system as it aids in the control of the central nervous system, hormones, inflammatory responses, reproductive functions, to mention but a few. Also, CBD Gummies helps with anxiety attacks by lowering its magnitute, which it does by reducing the normal stress levels to the barest minimum. Again, unlike many other products where you need to take for months before feeling the effect, CBD Gummies have a relatively quick response time.

CBD Gummies, which is short form Cannabidiol Gummies, come from their parent plant – Cannabis sativa also known as the Hemp plant. To clarify, CBD is completely safe to use and does not cause any change to your personality and mental state. Despite what you may have heard about the plant being psychoactive, experts have revealed that the cause of the abnormal reaction is from a different constituent of the hemp plant entirely, a substance known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Many studies have attributed the individual psychoactive changes to be due to the THC and, therefore, most CBD products are THC free or just contain a very minute amount of it.

According to research conducted in the past, CBD works well in the treatment and management of different forms of pain and discomfort. However, some of the current studies focus on finding out the complete mechanism of action by which CBD plays its fantastic role and if this effect can be beneficial to other body systems.

Before now, you may have heard of gummies that are like sweet and edible candy seen everywhere and every day. CBD Gummies are gummies with known concentrations of CBD (Cannabidiol) and known derivatives of the hemp plant. CBD is incorporated into gummies to enable you to enjoy the benefits associated with CBD, and at the same time, the sweetness of a candy. They describe it as the perfect calming candy to help you through any form of stress and anxiety.

Here’s What Science Has to Say

It is no longer news that the hemp plant has many properties ranging from relaxing to pain amelioration. CBD is simply one of the compounds that are responsible for these effects. They extracted CBDs from the parent plant and made them into forms that are more appreciating to the eye and more edible, while still conveying the original effects of the hemp plant.

How To Take CBD Gummies for Anxiety

Due to variations in the individual body systems, the amount of CBD Gummies consumed also varies from one person to another. The normal advice, especially for a new user, is to start low, maybe with a 10mg gummy, and then check how you feel afterward (both the benefits and the discomfort). Then, you can decide to up the concentration or increase the frequency of the previous concentration. Basically, you increase the number until you attain your desired effects. The effects of a single gummy usually last for about 6 to 8 hours so you can factor that into your criteria for choosing a dose. Although, how it lasts usually depends on the consumer’s metabolism, strength, etc.

Key Health Benefits of CBD

CBD is hailed as a miracle cure because it has numerous benefits which range from physical, to emotional and then psychological. The good thing about CBD is that it makes the effect last longer, that seems wonderful, doesn’t it. The benefits of CBD include:

Side Effects

Basically, CBD Gummies is a safe product since it rarely causes a reaction. However, it is possible to encounter some minor side effects like gastrointestinal problems and drowsiness after taking it, but, as stated earlier, the chances of encountering these effects are very slim. Again, it is possible to react to the secondary ingredients of CBD gummies like the sugar, color, and flavors normally used to improve the taste and appearance of the gummies. If you encounter any severe symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical assistance.

The Legality of CBD Gummies

CBD Gummies are as legal as any other CBD product. That is to say, CBD gummies are very legal. Since they are all derivatives of the hemp plant (which is also legal according to the 2018 Farm Bill). However, it is only legal if it contains 0.3% or less as its THC concentration by dry weight. Again, the law guiding CBD is a federal law, so you have to check your state for any state-placed prohibition or ban. Remember, the law is not in favor of any CBD product having more than 0.3% of THC, which means if you purchase them, you do that at your own risk.

How Has 9/11 Changed America?

September 11, 2001 will forever remain etched in the memories of Americans. Almost 3,000 innocent lives were lost during the deadly 9/11 terror attack. No one saw it coming until two planes hijacked by terrorists crashed into New York’s World Trade Center.

Terrorists aboard a third plane hovered around the Pentagon while the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania. And this was the beginning of significant changes in America’s history. Nearly everything changed in a bid to make America safe. Below are several things that changed after the terrorist attack.

Start Of War On Terror

The 9/11 terrorist attack on U.S. soil marked the beginning of America’s war on terror. Before then, American troops were home. But a month after the attack, American troops were deployed to Afghanistan. Their main objective was reining in al-Qaeda militia – an outlawed terror group – behind the terrorist attack in the U.S.

In an address to Congress nine days after the attack, declared a global war on terror.

“Our war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped, and defeated,” Bush’s resolute stand read.

The U.S. troops sustained a long war in dismantling the Taliban government supporting al-Qaeda. It is the most protracted military campaign in the annals of U.S. history. And it didn’t end here. Military troops from the U.S. in 2003 invaded Iraq intending to dethrone Saddam Hussein. Hussein was the leader at the time and was producing weapons for the Taliban forces.

Twenty years later, about 8,000 US troops are still in Afghanistan, taming the Taliban insurgency.

Health Complications

Residents of lower Manhattan in New York reported increasing cases of Ground Zero respiratory diseases five months after the terror attack. Some of the 9/11 related illnesses came as a result of pulverization. When the World Trade Center collapsed, all materials in the building became fine dust spreading all over Manhattan.

The World Trade Center Health Program certifies that there are more cases of respiratory diseases since the attack in the area. Further, other ailments certified by the program include asthma, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, cancer, depression, rhinosinusitis, and sleep apnea.

Onset Of Deportations

The Department of Homeland Security didn’t exist before September 11, 2001. President Bush formed it in 2002, working closely with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Deportations rose exponentially during Barack Obama’s administration, having the highest numbers. Between 2009 and 2010, nearly 400,000 people were deported.

Between 1999 and 2001, there were at least 200,000 annual deportations. But they doubled after the 9/11 terror attack.

Airport Security More Elaborate

In 2001, you would wander around the airport in the U.S. without much fuss. Today, you need a ticket to do this. And proper scrutiny of your passenger I.D. is undertaken before boarding a flight. A thorough body check happens today, and you must remove your shoes and your belt. Back then, none of this happened. Security is now elaborate – nothing is ignored. Not even the vaguest intelligence report.

Anti-Muslim Bias

Between 2015 and 2016, FBI data indicates 91 cases of assault stemming from anti-Muslim bias. In contrast to 2001, after the 9/11 attack, this number grew. Americans perceive Islam as a religion advocating for war. Religious discrimination is still a thing in America. The profiling of Muslims continues amid efforts to change the narrative that they are peace-loving.

The aftermath of the 9/11 terror attack in the U.S. in 2001 has a good and an ugly side. In terms of safety, it is a plus for the people. More elaborate security systems are in place today. But America is still in the war two decades later; this is a sad reminder of the aftereffect of the most significant terror attack in the land.

Zoe Wees

By: Kai Yeo

Powerful vocal range, unguarded vulnerability, and great songwriting skills. All of that combined is Zoe Wees, 19-year-old German singer-songwriter who is creating a global imprint with her unbelievable vocal range and soulful rhythms.

If you’re new here: Zoe Wees made her stellar debut with her single “Control” in March 2020, a song she opens up about her child epilepsy, a traumatic, isolating condition that can cause severe seizures. “Before I wrote ‘Control’ I looked back to the past every evening. Like I was just sitting in my room and was just there and was just sad and looked at the wall… After I wrote ‘Control’ it was another feeling. Like the situation wasn’t even that bad no more.” The emotional ballad became a worldwide hit and entered the top 20 at Pop radio in the U.S.

A year after her debut single, Wees continued to magnify her presence in the mainstream atmosphere with her emotional release “Girls Like Us” – an empowering anthem of solidarity shared among girls fighting against the stereotypes and expectations of society. Not just about struggling with looks, it is also a song that talks about emotions and pressures of social media. Now at 13 million streams on YouTube, it is praised as “a vulnerable pop anthem that pushed for togetherness” as Wees encourages her listeners to find confidence within themselves.

Now, with her debut EP “Golden Wings” out, Wees continues to relay her personal narratives in her music to create an inspiring and safe space for her fanbase – her wings. Last week, I got the chance to speak with Zoe about the five-track EP and potential live shows, as well as her struggles and autobiographical songwriting.

In your interview, you stated that this EP is your “strength and wings.” Can you share any special moments in the process of making this EP that reflects your strength and wings particularly?

“I feel like the last song for the EP that I wrote, I think it was ‘Girls Like Us.’ The one special moment I realized was that for the first time in a session, I thought about – not just about me – also the other people. About my wings and my community, which I didn’t really have before. I was always thinking about writing my own stuff down and thinking of myself for now, because it was what I was going through. But in the end, I know my music helps a lot of people. So [the one special moment] is taking extra care to also write about what people and my listeners can relate to, especially because I know what they’re going through.

Just in your lyrics and voice, the execution of your message “just want to make people feel less lonely, make them feel stronger” is shown so clearly. How do you feel about your fans’ reactions to your EP?

“I’m so happy. Cause you know actually; one thing is we wrote together. And they’re here from the beginning, and we’re gonna grow together when I go on tour and when I’m in their city. They’re gonna come visit me and I’m gonna see them. This is what makes me happy because anytime I go back to a city, I’m gonna see them again and again and again, so we grow together, which is so nice.”

Known for your “raspy low to unbelievably powerful and sky-high” singing style, is there a personal favorite style when making this EP or did you just go with the flow?

“I actually just go with the flow. Really, I just go with the flow. Whatever comes out of my mouth.”

You wrote your first song on anxiety and epilepsy; can you tell us why this was important for you to show your authentic and true self?

“Because I never write about happy things. You know, I hate writing about happy things, cause it makes me sad. That’s funny, I know. But I really like… never thought this was something I was ever gonna release. But I was just in the studio, and it was the first session, and I was so nervous. And then I thought about because I struggled so much with my epilepsy, and I still do even though it wasn’t as intense at that time, I really wanted to write a song about it. For me, it was the most natural way to be honest to my wings and everyone around me. And a way for me to be real. And that’s just me.”

Thank you for showing us such personal aspects of your life and empowering us (especially women) to be comfortable in our own bodies. Can you tell us what inspires you to write music?”

“Jessie J and Billie Eilish… and especially just what I’m going through.”

P.S.: If you can’t tell from her answers… Zoe was every bit as wonderful and charismatic with her words as she is with her musical talent. Your music is so inspiring and when we finally meet in real life (hopefully at one of your tour stops), please remember we promised to trade my skin for your brows. TOM ODELL – MONSTERS

Tom Odell new studio album monsters out now

2022 North American Tour Announced, Fan Pre-Sale Tuesday July 13 at 12PM EST

Away from all the noise of his various successes – three UK top 5 albums including the platinum-selling, chart-topping Long Way Down; two top 10 singles; a 2013 Brit award for Critic’s Choice – there’s one thing that’s always kept Tom Odell grounded: songwriting. A classic songwriter in the mould of Elton John (who’s a big fan, actually), Odell – who was awarded a prestigious Ivor Novello for Songwriter of the Year in 2014 – relied on his passion more than ever when it came to crafting his fourth album, the pop-leaning, emotionally-healing monsters out today, July 9 via Sony Music UK/RCA Records.

Today, Odell also announces that his 2022 North American tour dates will go on sale Tuesday, July 13 to fans via pre-sale at 12 noon EST/9am PST, with general tickets available for purchase next Friday, July 16 at 10 am local time. Visit the official website for more information.

Tom Odell’s new song out today “over you yet” has him lamenting a past relationship which he painfully cannot disconnect from. While the subject matter can be heavy, there’s a lightness of touch that means he is able to pull off pop’s greatest trick – hiding sadness in bright, joyful melodies.  The track is subtly embraced by his newfound love of DIY electronic pop with its beat-driven melancholic production.

After a dark period of mental health stalked most of his 2018 and 2019, Odell wrote his way through it, eventually letting down his guard and pouring his feelings on everything from anxiety to capitalism, toxic masculinity to politics, into a 16-track opus that feels like both a daring creative rebirth and a solidifying of Odell’s strengths. It’s all there in the opening song and album lead single, “numb” which opens with Odell’s unadorned vocal over sparse piano – “I hold my hand over the flame, to see if I can feel some pain,” he sings – before eerie, wheezing electronics and layers of clipped beats cloak the song in a sticky sadness.

“I was writing songs like I always did, but it wasn’t until I started writing about stuff that was contributing to my mental health problems that I felt like a record was forming,” he says of the album – his first since 2018’s 70s rock-leaning Jubilee Road, which was started in May 2019 and finished in Odell’s home studio between lockdowns in 2020. That thematic turning point came in the shape of the single “monster,” which like the album’s lead single “numb” confronts that sentiment head on. With the sky-scraping chorus (“you’re just a monster and I’m not scared”) initially inspired by Trump, and more specifically climate change activist Greta Thunberg staring him down at the UN Climate Summit in 2019, the song soon morphed into something more abstract, a self-help mantra for Odell’s ongoing battle with anxiety. “It’s about trying to tell myself that this thing I’m feeling is not real,” he says. “It always used to happen in bathrooms – I’d be out somewhere and then I’d walk to the bathroom and my heart would go at a million miles per hour and I’d feel like I was about to collapse, and I’d try to tell myself it was fine. That it will pass. That it’s a state of mind.”

Odell has been working as a musician in the public eye since he was 21 when self-penned debut album Long Way Down earned him a number 1 album, a top 10 single, the epic “Another Love and a Brit Award. Now, 30, it’s clear to Odell that the whirlwind around his debut kick-started a work ethic that eventually became an obsession. “Just wanting to completely lose myself in it but to a damaging extent I think.” It reached an apex in September 2019 when Odell, fresh off touring Jubilee Road, went straight to LA to start writing the next album. “Then this chronic anxiety that I’d had for a couple of years just got worse – I was very lonely, I was drinking way too much, and it just got really bad.” He takes a deep breath. “I was taking Valium every day to try and just not have a panic attack. I was seeing multiple psychologists over there.” Plans were made to fly to Nashville to work with producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Twenty One Pilots) but were swiftly cancelled after Odell woke up one morning “and I couldn’t do anymore music.”  He knew something had to change. “It was like I’m going to end up with something terrible happening,” he sighs. “I used to sit on Santa Monica beach and look at the planes taking off from LAX and just dream of being on one.” In the end he flew back home, went straight to his parent’s house, and slowly got better. “That was the point I started writing these songs.”

Slowly but surely, Odell turned that challenging experience into a new album. He also realized his broader lyrical horizons needed to be matched by a musical expansion, with a lot of the songs on the album – created alongside songwriter Laurie Blundell and producer Miles James – leaning into a more electronic, bedroom pop sound that Odell has steadily become obsessed with over the last few years. It wasn’t always that way, mind you. “I really turned my nose up at anything that was made on a computer,” he laughs. “I just didn’t like pop music. Some of that was my issue and some of it was that pop music wasn’t that good four or five years ago – it’s so interesting now. I hear lyrical subjects that I don’t think anyone’s heard in pop music before. I felt like I was getting caught up in that fire and suddenly I was so excited.” This newfound love of DIY electronic pop chimed with the pandemic’s arrival and songs were crafted in a more threadbare way around instruments he had at hand, like Moog synths. It was a move underpinned by both necessity and a desire to explore.

“It was the inhibition of not being able to use a full band that pushed things forward,” he says. So eerie synths and head-rattling beats augment the frayed-around-the-edges, impassioned rallying cry of “fighting fire with fire” (“I’m sick of white messiahs”), while “money” – which rails against society’s obsession with capitalism, while also pointing at the reflection in the mirror – is built around a driving pulse of echo-laden beats and crunchy, metallic percussion. On “numb,” inspired by experimental musician Mica Levi’s soundscapes, synthetic textures are painstakingly fused with acoustic flourishes. “I would say there was this period before it all unraveled in LA where I was just disconnected,” he says of the lyrical inspiration for “numb.”  “I felt bogged down, like I was beginning to lose that sense of lightness.”

fighting fire with fire,” “numb” and “monster” also touch on ideas around prevailing toxic masculinity and its effects on body-image issues. “On ‘monster,” I like the idea that I’m singing the chorus to myself – this idea of body image and never being good enough. You look in the mirror and it’s like ‘you’re just a monster.’ Those low self-esteem moments that we all have.” That theme also permeates the fragile, heart-breaking piano ballad and future single, lose you again, which pores over a fractured relationship and rails at the stoicism that bleeds out of men being afraid to show their feelings. Continuing to hide sadness in bright, joyful melodies is the buoyant pop shimmer of me and my friends, inspired by a homeless person Odell met briefly in LA who called him out on his patronizing need to help her, and the pastoral, 60s-inspired guitar that flutters around the broken tales of the lush tears that never dry.

As a testament to his enduring popularity, Tom Odell was invited to perform on BBC1’s Graham Norton TV show, and  more recently he appeared on the The Late Late Show with James Corden with another intimate performance.  At the same time, Odell’s fan base continues to grow exponentially with his new sound and direction. He has gained over 4 million new monthly listeners since the start of the year, with two thirds of his audience under 25. Despite joining TikTok relatively recently, his heavily engaged videos have been viewed over 15 million times, and his first ever single “Another Love” has had a resurgence in popularity amongst a new generation, becoming a viral hit and entering the UK official singles charts again.

Four albums into his career and Tom Odell has made a record that feels free of expectation, free of other people’s perceptions of who he is as an artist. While it was darkness that inspired him, he has managed to transform that into a multi-layered, genre-bending pop album full of light, and hope, even in the strangest of times. monsters also represents the start of chapter two in Odell’s ongoing musical journey. “I feel like I’ll be doing this for as long as I can,” Odell smiles. “I also feel like I do it for the right reasons – because I love making music.” He’s confident, too, after a difficult few years lost in the wilderness. “I feel like I’ve got shit to say and I’m good at what I’m doing now.”

An incredible writer, lyricist, rapper and vocalist, bursting with effusive energy and a massive personality, the Cleveland native, born Nnena Adigwe to Nigerian parents, credits some of her robust, descriptive storytelling impulses to her past screenwriting experience. A former basketball player, Nnena began writing comedic sketches during college. That soon led to working on more full-fledged projects—the kinds of works that needed sound tracking. Rather than pay licensing fees, she tried her hand at making her own music.

For her debut EP, Nnena scripted and produced comedic and brilliant bite-sized sketches and live videos to post as companion pieces for the EP track to set the vibe for each song- Check those out on her Instagram.

She explains making music for her is about telling stories that simultaneously define us and connect us to others. I want my music to elicit the truth and make the listener feel comfortable. I want people not to feel alone and I never want my music to leave anyone out.

In the music and visuals that she creates, she shares stories, scenarios, debacles and personal experiences with a warmth, humor, and finesse that almost make you forget how hard life can be. I’ll make the worst situations funny.

Nnena also finds inspiration for her music from the female experience, My music is what other females wish they could say out loud, but I do it for them in a song.

Nnena has received early coverage from Variety, Teen Vogue, Flood, and support from BBC 1’s Annie Mac, Apple Music’s Ebro, and has been a sought-after songwriter for artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and Normani. She has also performed as the opening act for rising star Boogie, Mayorkun, and Trinidad James.

Her music reflects her eclectic influences ranging from Otis Redding to Millie Jackson, from Queen Latifah to Miriam Makeba to Kendrick Lamar and especially, Lauryn Hill, she molded me the most, along with other neo-soul genre artists Musiq Soulchild and Jill Scott, as well from Drake, J. Cole, to Tiwa Savage.

Naomi Osaka × Mental Health Advocacy

Naomi Osaka, the highest paid female athlete to date, recently withdrew from the French Open and announced on Monday that she will also withdraw from the Berlin WTA 500 tournament. Osaka is 23 and is currently ranked number one by the Women’s Tennis Association in singles and number two in doubles, and is the first Asian player to hold the top rank in singles. Osaka has defeated long time tennis star Serena Williams and made over 37 million in endorsement deals last year.

Making enormous strides as a young, non-white female athlete and especially so in an underappreciated women’s sport, it was very shocking to hear of her depart from the French Open and subsequently from the Berlin 500 tournament. Doing what was best for her mental health, most were understanding and many of her competitors gave their praise and support for her decision. Osaka tweeted announcing her initial decision to not speak to the press on Twitter stating, “I’ve often felt that people have no regard for an athlete’s mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one.” After her announcement began to garner a lot of attention, she released another tweet explaining her leave from current play, “I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players, and my well-being is I withdraw from the tournament so everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris.

Serena Williams responded to Osaka’s decision by saying “I feel for Naomi. I feel like I wish I could give her a hug because I know what it’s like… You just have to let her handle it the way she wants to, in the best way she thinks she can.” While many agreed with Williams and shared similar sentiments, Osaka did receive a fair amount of backlash from her decision. Many criticized her for not being mentally tough and encouraged her to just talk to the press. Borris Becker, another tennis star, had a slightly different opinion, stating he was scared how Osaka’s career would fare after this decision and if she could not learn to handle the stress of a professional sports career.

Osaka told the press that she had too much anxiety over post-game press conferences; having dealt with anxiety and depression for a while and feels that interacting with the press increases her anxiety. When Osaka refused to speak to the press after her first French Open match, she was fined $15,000 and could have faced more severe punishment if she continued to ignore the press. Osaka later withdrew from the tournament after and announced her mental health was more important than her playing at this moment.

Many of you may remember a similar situation with the Seattle Seahawks running back, Marshawn Lynch, who would refuse to speak at press conferences. While it was included in his contract that he attends press conferences he told the press in a 2015 press conference that he did not appreciate the media constantly in his face hounding him, and that he felt the media was mad at him whether he spoke or not so he would prefer to say nothing at all. Called to be in compliance with his contract he would show up at every press conference and sit there not speaking or saying no comment. It came to be a joke to everyone and later clips of him at press conferences were turned into viral memes. We can see the comparison here and I wonder if the difference in reaction is because of the difference in sport or the difference in gender of the player. Both players are highly praised in their respective sports, they are top performing athletes and are both old and mature enough to make their own decisions as for what is best for them and their mental health.

Mental health struggles, although not new, have become newly accepted in society and it is a relatively new idea that celebrities, professionals and professional athletes can openly talk about their mental health struggles and hope to not to be put down for them. Although many still are, it is a sad thing to witness someone receive negative comments after claiming they are doing what they believe is in their best interests. We all struggle with mental health in one way or another and if Osaka believes it is best for her to not talk to the press, that should be a respected opinion by the community.

There will always be players, whether that is newbies who want to get their name out there and enjoy the spotlight, captains such as Megan Rapinoe and LeBron James who enjoy speaking on behalf of their team and feel it is in their duties as captains and team members to speak, or just someone who enjoys talking and doesn’t mind speaking to the press, there will never be a shortage of players, coaches, and staff members who are willing to give their opinion and comment at press conferences. All players should not be mandated to speak to the press if it is something they are not comfortable with.

With the negative reaction Osaka received, the fine and the additional media coverage she received after announcing she wanted very little, Osaka was forced to drop out from two major tournaments. Osaka discussed how she feels the tennis community, and higher ups could do a better job of supporting players and ensuring that they have good mental health. She and many others hope this starts the process of bettering all athletes’ mental health and changing outdated rules; hopefully this change does not come at the cost of a young star’s tennis career.
