Addison Grace – “I Wanna Be A Boy”

Musician and TikTok phenomenon Addison Grace released their single, “I Wanna Be A Boy,” that discusses their own intimate tour with gender. Throughout writing the song and exploring what gender truly meant to them, Addison was able to discover their pronouns – he/they – and come out as nonbinary. Addison sings, “I guess I wanna be a boy,” coming full terms with this sincere and profound message.

Addison pondered with never releasing the song past his own social media, but after posting it online and observing the feedback, he knew that it deserved an appropriate debut. While speaking with B Drop, Addison states, “I initially started writing it when I was questioning a lot of things about myself. I’m very open with how I identify online and I’ve always openly been a queer creator, queer musician, and at that time I was really not understanding how I identified with my gender and how I felt about it, and so it started off as a song about gender roles and how I was jealous of guys and how they got to have certain things I couldn’t have. With time, I realized it was very much me explaining — in song form — that I wasn’t a girl and that I was nonbinary instead.

“A lot of people ended up relating to the song. I had trans men relating to it saying “I’ve always felt like that.” I’ve had trans women being like “I used to deny I was a woman and I wanted to be a boy; I wanted to be “normal” — quote, unquote. I even had my friends who were born female and identify as female feel that way because they felt they were a tomboy and never fit in with the “girlie girls” so to speak.” He continues, “Even though, for me, it’s a song about gender identity and finding myself in that way, I think really at the core — it becomes a song about not understanding yourself and wishing so desperately that you could and it’s a very vulnerable song for that reason.”

The cover art for the piece showcases several images of Addison while they were growing up, at different time periods. He talks about this, saying, “I feel like a lot of my work recently has been about growing up and about those awkward moments in your life, so for this song, I wanted it to be a collage of my face growing up. I didn’t want it to be something someone had drawn. I wanted it to be realistic so I searched through a bunch of scrapbooks and I found pictures of two-year old me, 10-year old me, 15-year old me and a picture of me from last year and we ended up crafting it all together because I’ve always loved the idea of putting photos together and it makes something else. I wanted to put stickers and all that because when you’re finding yourself, it feels like these weird puzzle that don’t fit quite right, so I wanted it to look slightly off… I really love it and it feels really nostalgic to me.”

The journey of coming out as non-binary for Addison was a difficult road and is something that he aims to inspire others with. They strive to empower individuals with the power to live their own lives as genuinely as possible. Through sharing his own journey, Addison nurtures the idea that gender identity is a voyage that they went on and hope that others can embark on as well.

Gemaine × Charlie Heat – No Questions

Compton singer/ songwriter Germaine and distinguished producer Charlie Heat teamed up to produce their upcoming album New Jack City, with top single “No Questions” dropping January 21. The debuting single drops with a music video, in which Gemaine’s vocal capabilities are highlighted, showcasing old-fashioned R&B ballads. The arrangement showcases simplistic production from Charlie Heat, making room for Gemaine’s diving vocals, before captivating keys and percussion swoop in.

Gemaine speaks about his inspiration for the single, stating, “I was inspired to write “No Questions” by a tweet that I saw from Issa Rae. She mentioned she was listening to Mint Condition’s “Breaking My Heart” and said she wished men today would be more like the R&B singers from the past. She was bringing attention to the fact that loving a woman used to be cool. It inspired me to make a record that had a similar energy but with a modern sound. I wrote this song to remind men that there’s nothing wrong with being soft-spoken and romantic with your girl.”

The debut of “No Questions” precedes the release of Gemaine’s Lefty EP, issued in 2020. The EP received critical acclaim by HotNewHipHopHipHopDXRated R&B, and more. With the arrival of the forthcoming collaboration album New Jack City between Gemaine and producers Ymtk and DJ Charlie Heat, we can only expect out-of-this-world work. The production affiliates operate as executive producers for the album, featuring credentials with artists Madonna, Ye, Kehlani, Lil Uzi Vert and more. The producers join forces in the project to illustrate Gemain’s creative concept with impeccable execution.

Gemaine and Charlie Heat knew that they struck gold working together on early studio sessions, shortly after deciding to team up on an artistic project. The upcoming album channels reference from old-school gangster films like edgy 1991 thriller New Jack City. Gemaine and his collaborators have generated a distinguished sound and essence for the album, producing brilliant tracks that highlight creative brotherhood stemming from the teams’ cooperative work ethic.

360 had the opportunity to chat with Gemaine about his distinctive R&B spirit, what he wants for the future of his career and how he plans on accomplishing it.

What makes you stand apart from other R&B artists?

I am genuinely moving with love, and being fearless about it. I think it’s bigger than me and my selfish needs. I love the music that inspired me and want to bridge the gap of where r&b is now and where it came from. I think my approach will do that, and I am a student of the game. If my music becomes popular, people will have to understand where it came from to do it and I’m not afraid to fail while doing so. Being a trendsetter ain’t easy but that’s what I’m striving to do. [To] create a new wave and a new appreciation to a different approach.

What can we expect from your upcoming album New Jack City?

Authentic chemistry from a group of guys who really love music, and who are not afraid to be themselves. I’m the voice to the music but the attitude and tone of the album is a collective effort

What is your goal for your career in 2022?

I would just love to be in the discussion of the “up next” artist to take over the game. I think I belong, and I know [that] if I get my foot in the door I’ll really do my thing

What is the biggest goal you aim to accomplish within your career?

Longevity and impact. Money is cool and fame is nice but having a legacy that outlives me is something I would be most proud of and strive for and what motivates everything I do. I want to be remembered. I want to be great.

About Gemaine

THE CW NETWORKS DEBUTS “MARCH”

From the CW Network comes the brand-new documentary series MARCH, that navigates through the journey of competitive HBCU band culture. MARCH directly follows the lives of varying band members and leaders that are a part of the Marching Storm, Prairie View A&M University’s Marching Band.

The docu-series comes in eight parts, illustrating the efforts that the members put in behind the scenes to ensure success, and how they juggle their college life and academics with their commitment to the marching band. MARCH airs on Monday, January 25 (8:00-9:00 pm ET/PT) and then it moves to its regularly scheduled programming of Sunday nights beginning on February 26 (9:00-10:00 pm ET/PT), after ALL AMERICAN and ALL AMERICAN: HOMECOMING take place on Monday nights.

The new series MARCH highlights the stories of diverse and gifted college students that attend Prairie View A&M University. Whether they’re drummers in the marching band or dancers on the flag team, they all have one thing in common; they work hard at their craft, and they juggle the responsibilities of college on top of their musical endeavors. While delving into personal stories from individuals and staff associated with the 300-person marching band, MARCH also studies the rich legacy and history of Prairie View A&M, emphasizing the importance of the Marching Storm band has had on that powerful story. The series follows along the journey that they must go through to become the top ranked HBCU band in the nation. Performances include a captivating homecoming show with Texas A&M and Southern University.

Ferne Jacobs × Craft in America

Fiber artist Ferne Jacobs’ lifetime art collection spanning from the mid-1960s to 2022 will be on display exclusively at the Craft in America Center.

The Los Angeles artist has been innovating in the art world for over fifty years. The exhibition will showcase around 30 pieces of work created by Jacobs across the timeline of her career. Though Jacobs has lived in Los Angeles for many years, her art has never been on display in such a way. The experience will take visitors through the evolution of her career as an artist and highlight her unique tactics and techniques.

Jacobs serves as a pioneer in the development of fiber as an artistic form. She is renowned for the methods she uses to manipulate the rare material. While embracing traditional techniques of knotting, coiling and twinning, Jacobs has continued to elevate these practices into something revolutionary. Though she may work in fiber, Jacob’s artwork are sculptured pieces of art.

The display of Jacobs’ artwork allows the public to admire and be inspired by her artistic approach. All of Jacobs’ work signifies a personal artistic journey constructed and apparent in her artforms. With years of dedication, Jacobs has perfected and transformed her unique craft.

The exhibition will run from April 2, 2022, to June 18, 2022, at the Craft in America Center in Los Angeles, California.

Related Programming

While the exhibition is an in-person experience, Craft in America is creating a virtual exhibition for those who cannot be in attendance. The virtual exhibition is complemented by an assortment of public programs such as an artist talk, demonstration, and hands-on workshop. Students from the Craft in Schools program, which works to encourage underprivileged K-12 Los Angeles schools, will be attend the exhibit. They will have the chance to learn about Jacobs’ creations, which serves as an opportunity for the students to explore the artistic method of fiber.

About Ferne Jacobs

After moving to Los Angeles at a very young age, Ferne Jacobs dedicated her life to her craft. After taking a weaving workshop with the artist Arline Fisch in the mid-1960s, Jacobs discovered her passion. After obtaining her M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate University in 1976, Jacobs has been showcased in several solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. Accumulating varying awards for her groundbreaking art, Jacobs artwork is also featured in public collections such as the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art (Washington D.C.), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City) and the Museum of Arts and Design (New York City).

U.S. Soccer Foundation’s “It’s Everyone’s Game!” 25th Anniversary Celebration

Nearly 500 supporters of the U.S. Soccer Foundation came together at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles – on the pitch of Major League Soccer’s LAFC – Monday evening to commemorate the organization’s achievements of growing the game and providing youth recreation opportunities in underserved communities throughout its 25-year history.

The U.S. Soccer Foundation’s 25th anniversary celebration featured many of the women and men who have been a part of the organization throughout its history and supporters from the most storied soccer teams in American history, including members of the “‘99ers,” the World Cup-winning 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team. The Foundation and its supporters also used the 25th anniversary celebration to highlight the contributions of five national leaders who are bringing soccer to underserved communities nationwide.

“We’ve been honored to play a role in the phenomenal growth of the game in the United States,” said Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “Sport has existed for millennia because there’s a payoff for everyone who plays – not just those who make it to the very top. Mastery of soccer skills builds confidence and self-esteem. The game teaches teamwork and leadership. We look forward to the next 25 years as we continue to make soccer everyone’s game.”

Visionary Award

Target has been a leader in corporate responsibility and community-building for years, uplifting neighborhoods nationwide by setting the bar for investing in communities. In 2017, the company made a $14 million commitment to youth soccer to bring the game to more kids and families across the country. This investment included the launch of a grant program to provide local organizations with funding for player and field equipment as well as training for volunteer coaches. In its work with the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Target exhibits exemplary leadership and dedication to the Foundation’s mission to increase access to the sport in underserved communities. Target was the first to make a significant contribution and fund the creation of 100 mini-pitches with the Foundation, providing safe places to play nationwide.

Major League Soccer has been a leading force behind the growth of the game in the United States. Founded in 1993 as part of the U.S. bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup, MLS debuted its first season in 1996 with 10 teams. The league excelled in growing its fan base and today 24 teams play in the U.S. and Canada. In addition to growing the sport professionally, the organization has made a significant commitment to addressing important social issues and enriching the lives of those in need through MLS WORKS, the league’s social responsibility platform. The 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team will forever have an iconic place in soccer. Aside from being one of the best teams to ever play, the team carved out an important place in sports history by solidifying a foundation for women in soccer. The sheer talent, energy, and determination the ‘99ers encompassed when they clinched the World Cup remains one of the single most inspiring moments in soccer today. Players from this historic team continue to find ways to give back to their communities, broadening access to the game and continuing to energize people around the sport. The players of the 2019 U.S. Women’s National Team have never disappointed. They will defend their FIFA Women’s World Cup title in France this summer. They represent the latest iteration in an evolution of greatness, with the U.S. Women’s National Team considered the most successful in the world due to their consistent high standard of excellence, three World Cup titles, four Olympic gold medals, and other competitive awards. The team has inspired countless young women and men to dream big and believe in themselves through a shared vision to increase excitement about soccer. Their impressive talent, combined with their teamwork and community engagement, highlight the best of this sport and showcase the critical skills young people can learn on the field and apply in their lives.

Maisha Simmons To Lead NAACP Foundation Relation Efforts

Maisha Simmons, MPA recently joined the NAACP as the Deputy Chief Director of Development/Sr. Director of Foundation Relations. Most recently Simmons served as a Senior Program Officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in an administrative role supporting the management of team operations and functions.

“We are excited to have Maisha as part of the Development Team at the NAACP to lead our efforts in Foundation Relations. She brings to our organization deep and trusted relationships within the philanthropic community and has the passion and dedication to support partnership between the NAACP and the funder community,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO.

For more than 20 years, Simmons has been dedicated to serving community organizations where she worked on issues like community violence prevention, early care and education, childhood obesity and youth development. Notably she led RWJF’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of young men and boys of color which was recognized during the Obama Administration through the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative.

“As one of the first Program Officers at RWJF to facilitate the relationship between NAACP and the Foundation I have seen first-hand the impact that can come from civic organizations in partnership with philanthropy to address some of the real challenges that communities face today. I look forward to continuing this practice at NAACP,” said Simmons.

Simmons is a graduate of Rutgers University and Baruch College and joins the Association as it restructures to better align its operations with the current political and civil rights climate.

True Religion Appoints Interim CEO

On November 1, True Religion announced that its board of directors has appointed board member Chelsea A. Grayson as its interim chief executive officer, following former CEO John Ermatinger’s decision to retire from the company. As a result of that appointment, Ms. Grayson will step down as the chair of the Audit Committee but will continue to serve on True Religion’s board of directors.

“As a board member for the past year, Chelsea has been instrumental in helping True Religion evolve the brand,” said Gene Davis, chair of the True Religion board, “We are fortunate to have someone of Chelsea’s caliber and experience step up to lead the company as we continue to innovate our products and customer experience. PORSCHE WORKS TEAM
