Sportsbooks favor LeBron and the Lakers to go back-to-back

The Los Angeles Lakers ended their decade-long wait for a 17th NBA Championship in October and with LeBron James and Anthony Davis set for another year in LA, they are favorites with the bookmakers to win another title in 2021.

Frank Vogel’s team is priced at +350 to surpass the record of 17 chips which they share with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics fell to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals this year, but could certainly go one better next time around.

Boston is +1400 with Bet365 to win their 18th championship which, considering there are some +800 numbers out there, might be considered very generous odds.

But as far as the biggest challenger to the Lakers is concerned, they can look a bit closer to home at the Los Angeles Clippers. It remains to be seen what happens to their roster with Ty Lue taking over the reins as coach, but Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are expected to stay put.

The Clippers, who at various points during last season were favorites for the title, are +550 to make up for what was ultimately a disappointing 2019-20 campaign.

Fans of the Milwaukee Bucks were also underwhelmed with how things panned out despite another MVP season for Giannis Antetokounmpo. A 4-1 series defeat by Miami in the Conference Semifinals was not in the script, and with one year left on the Greek Freak’s contract, the Bucks are a best price of +650 to triumph 50 years on from their one and only championship win.

Injuries to Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, coupled with the departure of Kevin Durant, meant that the Golden State Warriors took a year off from title contention but they are +800 to come back firing next season with what would be their fourth chip under coach Steve Kerr.

Golden State has the second overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, and whether they grab a highly-rated rookie or trade it away in a win-now move, they are a force to be reckoned with in 2020-21.

Another team many anticipate great things from is the Brooklyn Nets, who the sportsbooks seem to be having a tough time pricing up. Some betting sites have them at +600, but others have gone as big as +1200 which is surely too big for a roster that boasts two former NBA All-Star Game MVPs in the shape of Durant and Kyrie Irving.

The Nets were swept by the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the playoffs last time out, but the plan was always for 2020-21 to be the year in which they make a proper run at it.

Not many predicted that Miami would make it all the way to the finals and come close to denying their former star, James, but a heroic team effort led by Jimmy Butler saw them completely surpass expectations. Repeating that is a tall order, but +1600 is a more than fair price.

At +2000 is the Toronto Raptors, while the Denver Nuggets can be snapped up at +2500 and the Dallas Mavericks are +2800 if you shop around. Each of those teams has plenty of potential and star power – it’s just a case of putting it all together.

It’s surprising to see the Houston Rockets as big as +3000, and likewise the Philadelphia 76ers at +4000, but in such a competitive league, they are perhaps a bit off the pace.

The campaign will begin in late December at the earliest, and the regular season may be shortened so that the normal October-June timeframe can be in-play for 2021-22.

ADIDAS ORIGINALS CELEBRATES BASKETBALL HERITAGE AND NEW YORK CITY WITH RIVALRY

adidas Originals reinvigorates an iconic silhouette that pays homage to an era of basketball legends

Following a long-standing lineage of basketball silhouettes over the past several decades, adidas Originals continues to honor the sport’s heritage with the special re-issue of Rivalry in New York City last night. Revitalizing a peak era of New York basketball, which spearheaded a communal spirit of fierce pride, the cult classic is for lovers of basketball style on and off the courts. Returning in all its glory, adidas Originals teamed up with notable sportswear designer Eric Emanuel to debut the latest Rivalry model, inspired by New York’s undying passion and love for sports.

The shoe was celebrated through a pop-up gallery exhibition curated by Emanuel, showcasing the indisputable influence of basketball style into the realms of fashion, art, photography and more. The blank space was transformed into an interactive gallery covered in gritty, city-inspired installations that bought the shoe to life through the works of photographer Brock Fetch, mixed media artist, Tyrrell Winston and creative collective, NY Sunshine.

In true Big Apple style, Rivalry wheat paste posters drenched the exhibition entrance, surrounded by a canopy of scaffolding and sneakers hung from wires. Guests then walked through an exclusive showcase of collaborator works that included photography, installations, and a product showcase. On view was the latest iteration of the Rivalry Hi-Top, accompanied by both an archival silhouette from 1986 and a preview of what’s to come from the three stripes brand and Emanuel later in the year.

Staying true and honoring its predecessors, the latest Rivalry iteration will feature premium leathers that nod to the famous “Team Series” from the late 80s. The model stands out in a bold blue and orange colorway with adidas branding emblazoned on the tongue.

Today, adidas Originals will open the gallery up to the men’s and women’s basketball team from local New York school, High School of Fashion Industries, as well as the general public from 12:00 pm through until 5:00 pm. The surrounding streets of the exhibit will also play host to adidas street scalpers handing out admission tickets to the pop-up where guests have the chance to grab a limited edition Rivalry-inspired t-shirt designed by Eric Emanuel.

The Rivalry High OG will be available at select adidas retailers on Friday, February 8th and will retail for $110 USD.

NBA All-Star Captain Odds

As the Golden State Warriors continue their celebrations as Kings of the city, Warriors super fan and actor/comedian Blake Anderson, gifted bottles of Crown Royal XR to the entire 2018 championship team. Olympics, Two-Thirds of US to VP Pence: Not Appropriate to Stay Seated During Opening Ceremonies

Viewing of Games on Streaming Devices Makes a ‘Breakthrough’ Impact;
Americans Disapprove of  ‘Shut Up and Dribble by Wide Margin,’ also say Athletes should be Able to Comment on Social Issues;
Approval of Subsidies to U.S. Olympic Athletes by More than 2 to 1;
Absence of Matt Lauer and Bob Costas gauged; Ban on tackle football until freshman year in high school?

Vice President Mike Pence’s decision to remain seated as the combined North and South Korean teams entered the stadium during Olympic Opening Ceremonies received a harsh rebuke from the American public – by 3-to-1, according to a Seton Hall Sports Poll conducted this week,

A strong 66% said the gesture was not appropriate, with only 18% supporting the decision.  People in the 18-44 age bracket disapproved by 72%-14%, while older people, by 60% to 22% –  were somewhat more supportive — but still strongly opposed.

“It’s a departure from the reaction to most actions taken by the current administration during this era of polarization,” noted Rick Gentile, director of the poll, which is sponsored by the Sharkey Institute.   “Eighteen percent is less than half of the usual approval found from polling on other administration actions.”

The poll was conducted this week with random calls to 775 adults on landlines and cellphones across the country, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.6%.

Olympic Games: Streaming Garners ‘Breakthrough’ Numbers; General Interest Levels Gauged; Impact of Absence of Bob Costas and Matt Lauer; Subsidies for U.S. Olympic Athletes Favored

As for the Olympic Games themselves, 17% named “streaming” as the manner in which they mostly watched the Games, and while 54% named NBC’s primetime coverage, the 17% is significant for the communications industry as a breakthrough number.  (12% named “other TV networks” as their most preferred option).

“It’s eye-popping,” said Gentile.  “It marks yet another breakthrough in the so-called ‘cord-cutting’ era.  That little more than half of the audience primarily watches on NBC primetime would have been considered remarkable just four years ago. And as a sign of things to come, 44% of those 18-29 chose streaming, about the same as chose NBC prime time.”

Meanwhile, as far as general interest in the Winter Olympics,  only 9% say their interest in greater, while 18% say it is less than previously.  But among those 18-29, coveted by advertisers, interest was greater among 20%, with only single digits in older age groups (7% in the 30-44 category, 6% among 45-59 and 7% among 60+).

“This could be due to the X-Games influence and the increased snow-boarding coverage,” added Gentile.

66% said it didn’t matter whether they were viewing an event live or delayed.  And 66% also said that NBC has done a good job of generating interest in the Games.

This is the first Olympics in many years without Matt Lauer’s presence in the morning, and Bob Costas serving as host in prime time.  16% said the evening coverage was “not as good” without Costas, and 11% said morning coverage was “not as good” without Lauer.

Asked whether the US Olympic Committee should subsidize American athletes who cannot earn a living participating in sports like luge, cross-country skiing, and other sports, 59% said they should offer subsidies with only 22% saying no.

Athletes Voicing Opinions on Social Positions Supported; A Rebuff to Fox’s Ingraham.

The Poll asked whether professional athletes should use their fame to comment on social issues.  47% said yes, and 42% said no, with 11% having no opinion.  But asked about Fox News’ host Laura Ingraham’s comment that the players (notably LeBron James and Kevin Durant) should “shut up and dribble,” only 25% approved while 46% disapproved.  (30% had no opinion).  Among those who identified themselves as African-American, only 12% expressed approval of her comment, with 69% disapproving.

Ban on Tackle Football until Freshman Year in High School?

Finally, the Poll asked for opinions on the bill in the California State Legislature to ban organized tackle football until freshman year in high school in response to the danger of brain injury to younger players.  The bill received support from 46% (nationally), with 24% disapproval.  30% had no opinion or did not know.

This poll was conducted by telephone February 19-21 among 775 adults in the United States. The Seton Hall Sports Poll is conducted by the Sharkey Institute.

Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard landline and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

Brand upgrades offerings with The Icon Collection and new prescription lens program from partners Jamie Foxx, Hailee Steinfeld, Jeremy Piven and Ashley Benson
  

Following the brand’s successful launch this summer, Privé Revaux is releasing its second collection of handcrafted eyewear, along with a new campaign starring brand partners Jamie Foxx, Hailee Steinfeld, Jeremy Piven and Ashley Benson; styled by creative directors Mariel Haenn and Rob Zangardi, and shot by Steven Taylor. Along with the new collection, Privé Revaux will also debut prescription glasses and new exciting retailers.  

The new Icon Collection pays homage to iconic figures who ignite inspiration, both current and past—The Einstein, The McQueen, The Karl, The Jackie O. Each design has been upgraded in both quality and design, crafted by hand with high-end materials including acetate and a proprietary lightweight, yet durable metal alloy. Additional features include newly designed hinge screws and more; all still retailing for only $29.95 per pair.

In addition to new styles, Privé Revaux will also expand from traditional sunglasses to prescription sunglasses and optical frames with the new Privélege program. Launching within the next few weeks, Privélege is a subscription service that grants members exclusive access to money saving benefits. For only $29.95/year (the price of one pair of Privé Revaux glasses), members can add prescription lenses to their Privé Revaux frames at wholesale cost. Frames with prescription lenses will begin at $59.95 (depending on lens type), a fraction of the price of typical prescription glasses. In addition, members will be privileged with early access to limited-edition frames and exclusive discounts. To enhance the shopping experience, customers can utilize “The Reframer Virtual Try-On,” a digital tool exclusively on PriveRevaux.com where customers can upload a selfie to see how any frame will fit their face prior to purchase.
