Prohibition NYE 2018

‘For once, this past New Year’s Eve wasn’t a blur (no wordplay intended). Taking space at Downtown LA’s historic ticket concourse inside Union Station.’

by Vaughn Lowery

The best means to enter this venue is through the VIP red carpet so be prepared to get the celebrity treatment for around $200 per person which includes open bar (GA tix are avail as well). After a no nonsense check-in, you’ll be whisked off to the step and repeat for a quick photo. Then, your legs will begin to wiggle your way over to the elevated DJ booth outside where it was like a whimsical LED rainbow-like garden orchestrated by top 40 music.

Everyone was dolled up in roaring twenties attire and the atmosphere made it feel like we all went back in time. Well, maybe back into 4 bar lines of premium liquor, which caused many of us to become double-fisted (and inebriated but we took the Expo Train line from Downtown Culver City for a $1.75 and an Lyft back for less than $50 during peak hours).

Our VIP bracelets allowed us access to the actual concourse where the mega screens, top notch concert sound and lighting system were housed. A 60 foot ball drop relaxed above our heads alongside of metallic confetti until the clock struck midnight. Not to mention crow-like characters roamed through the crowd on stilts while a saxophone player jammed to EDM beats.

We proceeded on to another outdoor patio where we enjoyed live burlesque shows where gorgeous antiqued chandeliers hung in a red tent.

PROHIBITION NYE is LA’s premier party to be at for New Year’s Eve. If you don’t trust us, just purchase a ticket and see for yourselves. This event was put on by McCullough and Ross in partnership with KCRW.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW APPRAISER BRINGS GUEST TO TEARS

IN STUNNING SEASON OPENER!

Hit PBS Show Delivers Season 22 Surprises With

Never-Before-Seen Treasures

New season premieres Monday, January 8 at 8/7c PM

After more than 20 years searching for America’s hidden treasures, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW finds sensational first-time objects in six cities featured as part of season 22. From eyewitness accounts of historic moments to items that are truly macabre, ROADSHOW appraisers, guests and locations make this a ground-breaking new season!

“I was amazed by the number of never-before-seen items discovered on this year’s tour,” says executive producer Marsha Bemko. “That mix of new treasures and sizzling stories along with our first event filmed at a Gilded Age mansion in Newport, RI fills this season with can’t-miss episodes!”

Along with discovering the mystery of the mosquito and the masterpiece, viewers will see other first-time items such as:

  • In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a head in a box! A plaster head, that is, of a convicted bank robber who fashioned the prop to aid in his attempted prison escape. Harrisburg episodes will air January 8, 15 and 22.
  • In New Orleans, Louisiana, a charming study of Andy Warhol painted by his friend, artist Jamie Wyeth, capturing Warhol with his beloved dog Archie. New Orleans episodes will air January 29, February 5 and 12.
  • In St. Louis, Missouri, a vintage Ozark Airlines poster, ca. 1960, featuring aircraft of the era and company logo illustrated through mid-century modern design. St. Louis episodes will air February 19 and 26, and March 26.
  • In Portland, Oregon, an eyewitness account of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln captured in a letter written by the guest’s grandfather, who was at Ford’s theater that fateful night and captured a most remarkable description of John Wilkes Booth. Portland episodes will air April 2, 9 and 16.
  • In Green Bay, Wisconsin, a rare Cadillac “rain lamp,” ca. 1968, used to promote the famous auto brand through modern design and a unique mineral-oil-on-wire feature that simulated rain. Green Bay episodes will air April 23 and 30, and May 7.
  • In Newport, Rhode Island, a one-of-a-kind 1939 Royal typewriter, plated by Cartier in 24k gold and presented to the guest’s grandfather, who was vice president of sales at Royal during the period. Newport episodes will air May 14 and 21.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW offers engaging ways to experience the season premiere and new episodes, including live tweeting with producers and appraisers Mondays at 8/7c PM; an after-show AR Extras LIVE broadcast on Facebook; the weekly AR Extras newsletter; and original feature articles, video archive and more on pbs.org/antiques.

Part adventure, part history lesson, part treasure hunt, 15-time Emmy® Award-nominated ANTIQUES ROADSHOW is a production of WGBH Boston. The series is the most-watched ongoing series on PBS and is seen by around 8 million viewers each week.

“At 20 years old, he’s still on the rise and appears to be perfecting his sound with each and every release.” – Huffington Post

“The song’s breezy acoustics make listeners feel that they are at the same beach Simpson is singing about, a classic case of showing instead of just telling, in more profound lyrics.” – Billboard

“Simpson has stepped away from his formerly synth- and bass-heavy dance pop and turned to breezy, Jack Johnson-esque acoustic beach pop.” – Rolling Stone

“…Simpson is not only about to shock everyone, but (most likely) become a playlist staple.” – NYLON

LA-based rock band Cody Simpson & The Tide premiere the LIVE performance video for their song “Tell Me Why,” today on Paste Magazine who said that Simpson’s preternatural talents practically burst through the screen as he performs, particularly as the effortlessly infectious song builds to its fast-paced crescendo. PRESS HERE to watch.

“This version of ‘Tell Me Why’ showcases a vibe very similar to how the song was originally written: jamming, spitting out soulful spontaneous lyrics and melodies.” – Cody Simpson & The Tide

“Tell Me Why” comes off the band’s new EP, Wave One, via Entertainment One (eOne). Pulling inspiration from surf music, rock music, and psychedelia to provide a vivid snapshot of a carefree summer, the EP perfectly encapsulates Venice Beach and the sun-kissed streets of Southern California where it was penned. Like its namesake, Wave One ebbs and flows between songs of surf rock with irresistible energy, to songs of breezy beats, provocative hooks, and even acoustic sixties-style call-and-response. PRESS HERE to listen.

Australian-born Cody Simpson has had an impressive career to date. His 2013 album Surfer’s Paradise featured collaborations with Ziggy Marley and Asher Roth and landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. He toured Europe and the U.S. as direct support for Justin Bieber and along the way, he performed on television programs including The Today Show, Live! with Kelly, Late Late Show with James Corden, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. For the 2015 World Games, Cody partnered with The Coca-Cola Company, Founding Partner of Special Olympics, to record a unified song titled “Reach Up,” and carried the torch for Australia in the 2016 World Olympics in Rio. His latest album, Free (2015), exhibited a musical shift for Cody, and the singer-songwriter received critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard, Nylon, and MTV which said, “Cody’s getting ‘raw’ and ‘real’ on his latest effort.”

In many ways, Cody Simpson has been working towards the Tide for his entire career. “The reason behind the name was I wanted this body of work to be an audio replication of what the Tide is as an element of nature,” he leaves off. “During that one summer, I had so many revelatory experiences. I wanted to be an exemplar of the Tide’s flow. It was about taking people back to that primitive innocence and being able to appreciate that. Music is the best vehicle to do so.”

Jessica Markowski

Jessica Markowski is a model and digital influencer with over 175,000 followers on Instagram. Although she was born in Poland, Jessica is native New Yorker living the ‘American Dream’ as a full-time Instagramer and has shared her social media tips with various A-list publications. This time with 360!

How to start

I think it is first important for you to understand your niche. You have to have a core understanding of who you are, what to represent and what can differentiate you from everyone else. I think from you know your values, you can create Instagram into a business that can hopefully lead to becoming full-time.

How to know what is my field

I think that ties a lot back to knowing yourself. Know your passions, your hobbies, your line of work, and know what it is that YOU are good at. If you are an amazing photographer, show that. If you are good at cooking, show that!  I think you just have to figure out what is special about you that you would want the world to admire and know you for.

How to get followers

I think gaining a following is different per individual. But here are a few things I think are a good place to start:

1. Use the right hashtags. Hashtags are a great way to introduce your platform to people who have not seen your account in the first place. It increases the number of eyes on your page.

2. Create a good visual. I think the photographs would be high-level quality, portray a particular emotion. I think those of main reasons why we are compelled to follow certain people in the first place.

3. Post at a particular time. From doing this for a period of time, I have a home to realize what time of day my audience is most engaged and most likely to like my photo.

How to influence others

Here are my top 4 values I kept with me in hopes of becoming influential:

1. Be very honest about your emotions and own them.

2. Show you are glad for others.

3. Be strong for others.

4. Choose to be happy.

How to maintain

I think it certainly is important to know and connect with your audience. Know who they are, what they like. Try to understand what is the core reason why they are following you in the first place. I think about that before every outfit, every partnership I make, every shoot I have. Not only do I want the image to satisfy me, I want to satisfy everyone who is inspired by me.

TEGAN MARIE

Rising country sensation TEGAN MARIE welcomes 2018 with the release of her brand new song – and debut for Warner Music Nashville – “Keep It Lit” on January 19. The track, which showcases her acclaimed vocal chops, will initially be available for digital download and on streaming services. Discovered by girls’ media platform Sweety High, Tegan signed to Warner Music Nashville last summer – 13 at the time – making her the youngest female in 45 years to ink a major Country deal. HuffPost also took notice of the young star’s talent naming her to its 10 Country Artists To Watch In 2018 list while critics and industry executives have given early praise:

“Tegan Marie is primed to be country music’s first Gen Z star… Between her natural talent and the powerhouse team behind her (hitmakers Scott Hendricks and Nathan Chapman, plus Gen Z media gurus Sweety High), don’t be surprised if Tegan Marie is a breakout country star sooner than later.” – HuffPost

“[Tegan] Marie has the personality and voice of a future star, and she definitely has the always hard-to-define ‘It.’” – USA Today

“‘Tegan is just a thousand-watt light bulb in a dark room.
When you look for ‘it,’ the definition is Tegan.’”

– Phil Guerini (GM, Radio Disney; VP of Music Strategy, Disney Channel) – Detroit Free Press

Co-written by Tegan, “Keep It Lit” is produced by acclaimed hitmaker and WMN’s VP of A&R, Scott Hendricks (with 70 #1 hits for artists including Blake Shelton and Alan Jackson).

“I’ve never signed an artist as young as Tegan,” shared Hendricks. “I hear lots of talented young female singers, but Tegan had that extra ‘thing’ I’ve only seen from stars that have made it to the top. She lights up any room she walks into and her singing was far beyond her years. The first time I recorded her I was ‘jaw dropped’ by her technical abilities and professional approach.”

The fun, up-tempo tune, named after an expression popular with Tegan’s generation (Gen Z) “lit,” celebrates happiness, good vibes and lightheartedness. It’s also her rallying cry to inspire people across the country to make 2018 a year of positivity and hopefulness.

Tegan is starting 2018 on a high note. During her history-making year she also made waves across the Internet. In 2017 alone, she garnered 100 million video views, had 270 million social engagements and gained two million social followers. Other highlights included making her debut at the Grand Ole Opry and collaborating with Hendricks and multi-GRAMMY winner Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift, Martina McBride).

With a larger-than-life voice, Tegan Marie was discovered when her father uploaded videos of her cover songs to Gen Z girls’ site, Sweety High. Featured as a Radio Disney Country artist, she has since catapulted into the national spotlight with several high-profile media performances and appearances including ABC’s Good Morning America and PBS’ star-studded special Smokey Robinson: The Gershwin Prize and the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards. First releasing the song “Lucky Me” to benefit the children affected by the water crisis in her hometown of Detroit, the momentum continued with her breathtaking rendition of Florida Georgia Line’s #1 hit song, “H.O.L.Y.,” racking up over 17 million views on Facebook alone. To date, Tegan has amassed over 75 million video views and receives over five million engagements online each month. She’s also had a string of coveted opening slots, sharing the stage with artists such as Cam, Hunter Hayes and Kelsea Ballerini. This past spring Tegan appeared at CMA Music Festival on the Radio Disney Country stage and at California’s popular Country music festival Stagecoach to great acclaim. Critics praised her performance with USA Today hailing, “[Tegan] Marie has the personality and the voice of a future star, and she definitely has the always hard-to-define ‘It.’” Last summer she partnered with Pepsi MidAmerica for a six-city tour and is currently working on her debut album for Warner Music Nashville.
