360 Magazine was recently given the exciting opportunity to test drive the brand new 2018 Chevrolet Colorado 4WD ZR2 Crew Short Box. In our opinion, the vehicle, which is priced around $45,000, is worth every penny. The car is well-equipped with an 8-inch, state-of-the-art infotainment system (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, back-up camera, Bose stereo and Wi-Fi hotspot). This ergonomical four-seater weighs in at 4,758lbs and is stocked with 17″ wheels alongside of a fob with auto start option.
At 360, we don’t have anyone on our team that fits the description of ‘lumberjack’ but we decided to give it a go so we could see for ourselves if the vehicle was suited for the lifestyle of the market consumer. In order to act the part, we had to look the part, of course. We channeled our inner lumberjacks and adorned ourselves in overalls and flannels before making the drive down to a small town called San Marcos that is located near the border of Mexico and the United States. San Marcos is home to So Cal Axe, one of the only axe throwing cages on the West Coast. While there, we learned the proper technique required to successfully propel an axe onto a bullseye. After a few hours of chucking axes at targets, we retreated to Hotel Z (https://www.instagram.com/staypineapple/) located in San Diego’s Gas Lamp district. We changed out of our sweaty flannels and into some navy blue apparel and made our way to Petco Park for the opening game of the San Diego Padres. We rolled up to the game in style. Heads turned as we pulled up in the Chevrolet Colorado which is coated in Kinetic Blue with a flashy yet functional spare tired propped up on the back of the truck. The Padres may have lost the game but the 360 team sure felt like winners riding around in that beautiful truck.
The next morning, we decided to continue our lumberjack adventures by heading north to San Luis Obispo [SLO] and we put the vehicle’s gas mileage, which boasts 19mpg city/25mpg hwy., to the test. With a capable 3.6 liter V6 engine (308hp and 270lbft of torque), we maneuvered our way up to Cal Poly (https://www.facebook.com/Cal-Poly-Loggers-190833514320167/) to witness the student logging and axe competition. Cal Poly, an agriculture school founded in 1901 with over 20,000 undergraduates, recently hosted and competed in AWFC (Association of Western Forestry Clubs). They prepared an entire complex to be utilized for all of the traditional lumberjack sports. The expo included everything from sawing, chopping, axe-throwing, birling, pole climbing, technical events such as wood identification, and much more! Each competitor has the opportunity to earn points for the overall team. Cal Poly did exceptionally well this year, as we took second place overall. Keep in mind, there were teams from all over the western region competing; some came all the way from Montana and British Columbia to compete. Overall, the week was filled with focused and fun-loving loggers. We had a blast watching the events and even getting involved in a few ourselves. We wouldn’t have wanted to spend our Spring Break anywhere else! However, our limited lumberjack experience made us feel like mere city slickers compared to the advanced skills of the other participants.
Shortly after, we bolted over to the neighboring town of Morro Bay to check out the Morro Rock. We were greeted by cheers and screams of “go mud bogging!” while cruising down the embarcadero. Upon arrival at the La Cuesta Inn (https://www.lacuestainn.com/) in SLO, we learned about Pismo Beach (one of the only beaches in Northern America which allows for off-roading vehicles on the beach). Subsequently, we arrived at the State Park and paid $5 for an all day pass and plopped off the pavement onto the sand. On the road, it feels like a sedan (but with a flatbed). Off the road, the Multimatic DSSV suspension (same
dampers used on the 2014 Camaro Z/28 and some of the Formula One vehicles) was able to easily adapt to knee-deep sand and dove head first into 3-feet of the Pacific. Clearly, the suspension is infinitely tunable to the demands of the driver while some monster trucks and cars got stuck while overheating. Our ZR2 seemed to rival all of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicons which were staggered throughout the coastline. We became an instant showstopper. Once the adrenaline faded, we headed to our hotel room at The Lofts (http://www.slobrew.com/the-lofts/) which is situated right above the Slo Brew tasting and live performance venue.
To sum up our experiences with the 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 not only can adapt to most terrains but to most lifestyles: from a concrete safari to an off-road excursion. Finally, General Motors has a crafted a crawling and trail running beast which can dress itself up for a night on the town. This is a phenomenal factory truck which needs no modifications and can take loads of abuse. With precise steering, good cornering, strong braking system and excellent off-road capabilities, this is our preferred midsize truck for anyone in the market to floss and look like a boss on tough trails. This vehicle not only brought out our inner lumberjack but also proved to be a great car for all sorts of uses.
My name is Brian Taborda. I am a 24-year-old with an affinity for putting pen to paper and creating magic. Ever since I was a child I’ve always found myself drawn to drawing. As the years went by, I narrowed my artistic focus and began honing my skills as a cartoonist. Growing up, I always admired the artwork when I would watch my favorite cartoons on T.V. I chose to pursue this style because I was attracted to the freedom that this genre of art offered. Cartoons tend to be funny and ironic. Cartoons are one of the oldest forms of animated entertainment and, despite technological advancement, cartoons have maintained the classic and simplistic design elements that have set the style apart from other forms of artistic expression. These last few years, the political and economical climate in my home country of Venezuela has worsened tremendously. The present situation has motivated me to further develop my illustration skills. I know that if I improve, I will be able to achieve whatever I set my mind to. Choosing to focus on my art means working for commission so that I can earn enough money to escape this socialist dictatorship in Venezuela. I’ve been able to work towards fulfilling my dreams because of the the support that I receive from my family, my girlfriend and my friends. I specialize a style of cartoon illustration that was popular in the 1930’s, however, I like to add a bit of an “underground” or “urban” vibe to the final products. I work primarily using Adobe Illustrator. I typically use the brush and pen tools and draw with the mouse. I hope to one day illustrate using more modern tools but, since the economy of my country is so bad, I can’t afford the proper equipment so I have to use what I have. Fans of my art can look forward to seeing my name agin in the future future as I hope to, one day, release my own clothing line, with stickers, skateboards, etc. that will have my illustrations on them. Of course, I would keep on doing commissions of my drawing for clients who ware interested. My goal is to get more people to start loving and appreciating cartoons, especially the older ones that were the pioneers of this timeless genre. They are the base of everything we have now animation wise.
GMC has done it again. The team over at 360 Magazine was lucky enough recently to have been given the opportunity to test drive the new 2018 Sierra Denali. The truck is undeniably roomie yet still manages to be both a ergonomical and practical vehicle. There is not much this truck can’t do. From towing a boat to picking up the carpool from soccer practice to tailgating in the parking lot at the big game, the Sierra Denali can do all of that and more.
About the 2018 Sierra Denali
GMC is taking its most popular pickup truck to the next level with the completely redesigned 2018 Sierra Denali and SLT.
Distinguished by bold design and segment-leading technologies, the next generation Sierra Denali once again redefines the premium pickup, while advancing Denali’s legacy as the pinnacle of GMC design, capability and refinement.
“GMC ignited the premium truck segment 17 years ago with the original launch of the Sierra Denali,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC. “The next generation 2018 Sierra Denali establishes a new benchmark in capability and refinement. It exemplifies precision in every detail.”
Powerful proportions and distinctive Denali design help define the Sierra’s unmistakable exterior, while the driver-focused cabin strengthens the brand’s reputation for refinement with premium materials, improved interior space and innovative storage solutions.
The 2018 Sierra Denali affirms its position as the most premium Sierra ever with segment-leading technologies and exclusive features, including:
• GMC Exclusive, Industry-first MultiPro Tailgate is the most innovative pickup tailgate ever, with six unique functions and positions offering enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, a standing workstation and easier access to items in the box.
• GMC Exclusive, Industry-first Carbon Fiber Pickup Box, the CarbonPro, was developed to increase durability, efficiency and functionality while offering best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance, making it the most durable pickup box in the segment.
• All-new ProGrade Trailering System with Trailering App offers a connected comprehensive suite of trailering technology that brings more confidence to the towing experience than ever before.
• Segment-first Multi-Color Head-Up Display projects key, customizable vehicle data on the windshield in a 3×7-inch display to help drivers keep their eyes on the road.
• Segment-first Rear Camera Mirror offers an optimized view via an available dual-function interior mirror that expands vision to overcome common visual obstructions like occupants or cargo. This next generation system features a higher resolution camera and display and the ability to tilt or zoom the view.
The redesigned Sierra Denali offers a full suite of available advanced safety features, along with exclusive chassis technologies such as Adaptive Ride Control.
“The heritage of the GMC brand is rooted in full-size trucks, of which the Sierra is our cornerstone, with our SLT and Denali models contributing 87 percent of our total crew cab sales,” Aldred said. “The next generation Sierra caters to these unique customers who demand a premium, innovative truck that supports their professional and personal passions.”
A commanding presence
The 2018 Sierra Denali debuts a profound new GMC design. A taller, more confident stance gives Sierra Denali powerful proportions complemented by hallmark details such as a chrome grille with a sharp, precise dimensional pattern that epitomizes the truck’s attention to detail.
“The next generation Sierra Denali has a deliberate, commanding presence,” said Matt Noone, director of design, GMC Exteriors. “Its unmistakable design embodies the essence of GMC, while advancing the brand’s core styling elements — rooted in inherent capability — with a new expression of its signature cues.”
Sierra shows refinement and strength through a larger, more-dominant upright grille, a taller hood, and a bolder, more pronounced take on GMC’s C-shaped lighting signature.
Advanced lighting technology distinguishes the Sierra Denali from every other truck on the road. GMC’s front lighting signature is conveyed through a prominent “light blade” that delivers uniform LED illumination for the daytime running lamps. LEDs are also used for the headlamps, taillamps, fog lamps and other illuminative elements, with lenses constructed from durable material with an almost crystalline quality.
The truck is larger than the previous truck in virtually every dimension, and the larger grille and dramatic lighting accentuate its broad-shouldered stance. The wheels are pushed closer to the corners and wear larger diameter tires. Denali features available 22-inch Ultra Bright aluminum wheels; the SLT model offers its own unique 22-inch dark aluminum wheels finished with chrome accents.
New, more prominent badging includes a bold DENALI nameplate on the tailgate —expressed in a new block-style typeface that echoes the truck’s strong proportions — below the signature GMC identification.
An elevated interior refined
The Sierra Denali’s new interior builds on the refinement and sophistication that have become synonymous with Denali, topping the segment with best-in-class front head- and legroom (maximum), providing a more spacious, driver-centric environment finished with premium materials.
Putting the driver at the center of experience starts with a higher seating position that offers a confident view behind the wheel. The optimized ergonomics emphasize easy, intuitive interaction with the vehicle’s technologies, such as the all-new Trailering App and segment-first Head-Up Display.
Denali-exclusive materials — including premium leather-appointed seating, authentic open-pore wood trim and dark-finish aluminum decor — help raise the interior to a new level of refinement. The exclusive leather appointments have a distinctive, large-pebbled grain with a contrasting stitch pattern that is both premium in appearance and touch without sacrificing durability, and the wood trim features an open-pore texture evocative of hand-planed furniture.
When it comes to the space and storage vital to truck customers, the 2018 Sierra’s crew cab has nearly 3 inches of additional rear-seat legroom compared to the current model. The outboard rear seat backs open to reveal rectangular storage spaces large enough for storing tablets or laptops, tie-down cords, umbrellas or other important accessories.
Groundbreaking cargo box capability and materials
The next generation 2018 Sierra debuts a GMC exclusive, industry-first MultiPro Tailgate that is the segment’s most innovative tailgate ever. Standard on SLT and Denali, the MultiPro Tailgate features six unique functions and positions, offering enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, a standing workstation mode and easier access to items in the box.
The MultiPro Tailgate also incorporates a step entry and egress mode that, when paired with the assist handle, offers both step and seated functionality, with a maximum weight capacity of 375 pounds (170 kg). Ease of use is enhanced with two buttons on the tailgate handle that allow convenient inner gate release.
This multifunctional tailgate offers proven strength and durability, having undergone more testing and validation than any tailgate in GM’s history. Sierra is the first and only truck to offer the MultiPro Tailgate, providing premium truck customers the ultimate flexibility. MultiPro Tailgate will be standard on Denali and SLT.
The cargo boxes also offer best-in-class cargo volume — 63 cubic feet (1,784 liters) on the short box, as well as additional tie-downs and a new, available 110-volt power outlet. The bed continues to be made of roll-formed, high-strength steel, yet a revised alloy offers 50 percent more strength than the current model.
The 2018 Sierra Denali will offer, later in the model year, an available GMC exclusive and industry-first carbon fiber box — the CarbonPro — developed to increase durability, efficiency and functionality of the truck. It replaces the standard steel inner panels and floor with a lightweight, purpose-designed carbon fiber composite that offers best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance, making it the most durable pickup box in the segment.
“In 116 years of making GMC pickup trucks, our industry-first carbon fiber box is the toughest and most durable pickup box we have ever made,” Aldred said.
The new CarbonPro box is 62 pounds (28 kg) lighter than the steel version, and is one example of GMC’s strategic use of materials in engineering the Sierra. The strategy also incorporates aluminum for the doors, hood and tailgate, while relying on steel for the fenders, roof and standard cargo box to shave up to 360 pounds (163 kg) from Sierra compared today’s model.
ProGrade Trailering System with Trailering App
The 2018 Sierra offers a more confident towing experience thanks to GMC’s new ProGrade Trailering System, standard on Denali and SLT. The trailering system includes an all-new Trailering App featuring a Pre-Departure checklist, Maintenance Reminders, Trailer Light Test, Trailer Electrical Diagnostics and Trailer Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring.
Many of the Trailering App’s functions, including the lighting test and pre-departure checklist, are also available with the MyGMC app on compatible Android and iOS smartphones, a feature that offers great convenience when outside the truck or trailer.
The next generation Sierra also offers Hitch Guidance with Hitch View and Auto Electric Park Brake to help with perfect positioning when hitching. The available side view cameras and a trailer-mounted HD camera provide additional assistance when driving down the road or in reverse. With exclusive Trailer Theft Detection, owners can receive text and mobile alerts from OnStar when the trailer has been detached from the truck without permission.
Seamless, driver-focused technology has long been a Denali standard, and the 2018 Sierra Denali establishes a new benchmark by incorporating purposeful technologies.
These technologies work together to increase functionality and enhance comfort and convenience. Highlights include:
• Segment-first Multi-color 3×7 Head-Up Display: The 2018 Sierra is the first full-size truck to offer this technology, which projects key vehicle information on the windshield within the driver’s line of sight.
• Advanced GMC infotainment: This new, dynamic platform offers a smartphone-like experience with an intuitive interface, faster response and improved voice recognition. Sierra Denali’s standard 8-inch diagonal system includes navigation.
• Segment-first Rear Camera Mirror: This available dual-function interior mirror offers an optimized camera view that can help the driver’s view around potential vision obstructions such as occupants or cargo, while also offering a greater field of vision. This next gen system features a higher resolution camera, a higher resolution display and the ability to tilt or zoom the view. A conventional mirror view is also available.
• Surround Vision: Offering a bird’s-eye view of the truck, this available feature displays an overhead image on the infotainment screen, helping the driver detect potential obstacles when backing up, including when trailering.
• Full suite of advanced safety features: The 2018 Sierra Denali offers a full range of available advanced safety features, including Side Blind Zone Alert, Pedestrian Detection and Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking.
New versions of the proven 6.2L and 5.3L V-8 engines will be joined by an all-new 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel engine, expanding the powertrain lineup for the 2018 Sierra.
The 5.3L and 6.2L engines feature stop/start technology and new Dynamic Fuel Management that enables the engine to operate on one to eight cylinders, depending on demand, to optimize power and efficiency. The new diesel builds on GMC’s expertise with Duramax turbo-diesels offered in Sierra HD and Canyon models. The available 6.2L and 3.0L engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Sierra Denali features an exclusive Adaptive Ride Control suspension system designed to provide premium driving refinement with exceptional responsiveness. It employs sophisticated sensors to monitor road conditions and chassis responses in real time, enabling adjustments to active dampers every 2 milliseconds.

Ann Arbor is a small town unlike any other, primarily because it is not a small town at all; with a population of over 120,000, Ann Arbor is actually classified as a city. Although some aspects of Ann Arbor do resemble city-like characteristics, there is also an obvious small-town vibe. Basically, what we’re saying is that if a big city got together with a quaint little town and they had a baby, its name would be Ann Arbor. Fondly referred to as A2 by the locals, the city is located just 50 miles west of Michigan’s hub, Detroit. Although technically an exurb (a prosperous area beyond the suburbs that absorbs influences from the larger city) of Detroit, Ann Arbor embodies a unique personality of its own. Ann Arbor is the younger, more mellow neighbor to the bigger, more energetic Detroit. While Detroit may be the party house on the block, Ann Arbor is more akin to the house that is surrounded by a white-picket-fence with a University of Michigan flag hanging proudly by the front door. Ann Arbor is the epitome of a college town.
Just 13 years after the city was founded in 1824, the University of Michigan relocated from Detroit to Ann Arbor, meaning that the city’s cultural foundation was built around the university which has resulted in an exuberant amount of Wolverine pride. At the core of all of that pride is “The Big House”, also known as Michigan Stadium. “The Big House” earned it’s nicknamed due to its sheer immensity. The stadium holds the record for the largest stadium in the United States and comes in at second for title of largest stadium in the world. The stadium’s capacity, which is officially listed as 109,901, is big enough to accommodate almost the entire population of Ann Arbor. Every seat in “The Big House” is necessary as game attendance often exceeds 111,000 fans. The Wolverine’s football team have earned the right to call this magnificent area their home field as they are the winningest collegiate football team in NCAA history. Even just stepping foot on the turf during our tour of the stadium made us feel like winners. When game day rolls around, the city becomes a sea of blue and gold.
The university is not the only reason to visit. Ann Arbor’s diverse food scene is ripe with international flair. There are over 300 restaurants with menus inspired by cuisines from all over the world with atmospheres that will satisfy the wildest dining dreams. Whether you’re in the mood for a fancy, black-tie dining extravaganza or a laid-back snack from a quirky food truck, Ann Arbor has it all. We treated ourselves to a fine dining experience at Taste Kitchen. The high-quality ingredients combined with the expertise of the staff are what makes the blend of French and New American style dishes so delicious. Miss Kim’s Korean restaurant was perfect when we were in the mood to sit back and relax with a fabulous Korean style meal with a little Michigan twist. The restaurant’s owner and namesake designed the menu to showcase Michigan’s bountiful produce and works closely with local farmers to ensure the food is always at the highest possible quality. Miss Kim’s prides itself on offering a carefree and fun environment to its guests. Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina offers patrons the best of both worlds. The restaurant opened its first location in Southfield, Michigan with the intent to provide diners with a casual dining experience while still maintaining supreme standards of cleanliness and authentic cooking, adopting the motto “we feed you like we feed our family.” Bigalora is the pioneer of biga fermented pizza in the state of Michigan. The restaurant’s success led to several more locations opening up throughout the metropolitan area, including Ann Arbor. Biga lovers can grab a slice anytime anywhere from the food truck or even book the truck for catering services.
We planned a trip to world class indoor rock climbing facility, Planet Rock, but before we could transform ourselves into world class rock-climbers, we had to look the part. We outfitted ourselves at Bivouac, a men’s and women’s gear and clothing store that was founded in 1970. We may have bought way more than we needed for our upcoming adventure but we just couldn’t help ourselves! Bivouac’s array of unique merchandise is perfect for every occasion, whether it be a weeklong camping trip or a night out on the town. Once we had nearly emptied our wallets, we were ready to take on Planet Rock. Unfortunately, we had been so distracted by the stylish clothing at Bivouac, we completely forgot to pick up some climbing gear. Luckily, Planet Rock pro shop carries all essential gear for both indoor and outdoor climbing sessions. The facility caters to recreational climbers as well as those training to climb competitively. The climbing walls are fun for everyone and the challenging features are sure to interest even the most experienced climbers. The topography of the wall design may result in a few missteps and slip-ups but Planet Rock has installed an innovative mat system that will suitably cushion the occasional fall. By the end of our session, we were exhausted and in serious need of some chill vibes and good food. We replenished the burnt calories at Fred’s, a trendy health conscious restaurant a few blocks away from the University of Michigan.
By the time we refueled, our heads were still in the clouds from our rock climbing adventure and we weren’t quite ready to land just yet so we went over to the Yankee Air Museum, located just 30 minutes away from Ann Arbor in the city of St. Belleville, Michigan where the sky is the limit. Literally. The museum opened its doors in 1981 and really took off when it acquired a small collection of flyable aircrafts, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell Bomber, and C-47 Skytrain. The museum’s popularity soared right along with its visitors once the opportunity was extended to the public to fly on some of America’s most iconic flying machines. Our team was lucky enough to have a chance to ride aboard the C-47 Skytrain. With the wind beneath our wings, we glided through the sky in that bright yellow airplane and admired the beautiful city of Ann Arbor below. Although we flew for a reasonable length of time, it felt like we were only up there for a few seconds. We guess it’s true when people say, “time flies when you’re having fun.” Our feet were back on the ground and we felt sad that our stay in Ann Arbor was coming to an end. 360 Magazine’s President, Vaughn Lowery, loved the trip so much that he decided to nab a souvenir before we left so he could carry the experience around with him for the rest of his life. Michael Aul, a local tattoo artist who works at one of Ann Arbor’s best shops, Spiral Tattoo, drew up a stunning design and inked it onto Lowery’s arm. Much like a tattoo, the memories of our experience in the beautiful city of Ann Arbor will last a lifetime.

2018 marks twenty years since the release of the album that spawned era-defining singles Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin Praise YouÉd; and Right Here Right Now. Youߣve Come a Long Way Baby reached Number One in the UK album album charts, breaking the US Billboard Top 40, creating a global superstar and putting a new wave of UK dance music on the global map.
First released in 1998, Youߣve Come a Long Way Baby become one of the defining records of the ߢ90s, irrespective of genre. Swinging from hip-hop, to reggae and jangle pop, with Youߣve Come a Long Way Baby,Norman Cook broke stylistic ground and delivered a wildly original album, filled with imagination, huge hooks and even bigger beats.
Bigger than being just a dance album, Youߣve Come a Long Way Baby was a genuine phenomenon,&#a0;enjoying huge critical and commercial success; it contains 4 UK Top 10 singles, earning Cook a BRIT Award for best producer and two further nominations (Male Solo Artist and British Single) along the way. Embraced by the rock and pop press equally, the album was included in a Q magazine readers’ poll of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever, and provided a global breakthrough for both British dance music and the Big Beat sound. Singles Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin and anthemic UK Number One single Praise You (which scored 3 MTV VMA awards with its iconic Spike Jonze directed video) pushed dance music into the stratosphere, resonating with music fans and breaking electronic music to middle America. Norman Cook had caught lightning in a bottle, and in one genre-defining moment, the seeds of the noughties EDM US boom were sown, paving the way for the next generation of global superstars.

As 50 Cent once said, “hate it or love it, the underdogs on top.”
The Philadelphia Eagles triumphed over the New England Patriots in February 4th in Minneapolis, Minnesota and took home the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time in franchise history.
The Eagles dominated the beginning of the season, with sophomore quarterback, Carson Wentz, throwing 33 touchdown passes in the first 12 games, a new single-season record for the Eagles. However, the team suffered a devastating blow in December when Wentz tore his ACL in a match against the Los Angeles Rams in December. His backup, Nick Foles, was able to lead the team to a win in the fourth quarter of the game, but with 3 games left in the season, the team no longer had its superstar and many lost hope.
Despite being the number 1 seed in the NFC, the Eagles were named the underdogs for the Divisional Round, a title in which they embraced. Players took the field wearing dog masks, inspiring fans to do the same. Cries of “Dilly Dilly” echoed through the stadium as the Eagles beat the Falcons 15-10 and went on to destroy the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship.
In the team’s third Super Bowl appearance, the Eagles faced off against the New England Patriots, which meant that Nick Foles, the Eagles backup who had considered retirement after his 2016 release from the Rams, was taking on one of the greatest NFL players of all time, five-time Super Bowl winner, Tom Brady.
No one anticipated an Eagles victory. Well, no one except for the team’s devoted fans.
I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia in southern New Jersey that is only a fifteen minute drive from Lincoln Financial Stadium. I was born into a family of super-fans; I could spell Eagles by the time I was 2-years-old. Throughout my 22 years, I have attended countless Eagles games, most of which ended in my dad’s frustration. Despite the team’s continued poor performance over the years, fans like my dad remained loyal and patient.
My dad, has stuck by the Eagles for all 66 years of his life. At 8-years-old, I attended the Super Bowl in 2005 with my family and watched the Patriots had defeated the Eagles 24-21. Going into Super Bowl LII my dad was cautiously optimistic. I had the privilege of attending the February 4th game with my family. Although the game took place in Minneapolis, over 1,000 miles away from Philadelphia, it looked and sounded as if it were a home game. The stadium was a sea of green. Crowds were chanting “E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!” and singing the Eagles fight song all throughout the game. Sure, we may have a bad rep, but there is a certain camaraderie that comes with being an Eagles fan. The fan base can best be described as a family, a very loud family.
The Eagles were the first on the scoreboard, nabbing a field goal early in the first quarter. The Patriots responded with a field goal of their own, but Philadelphia fired back with a 34-yard pass that resulted in the first touchdown of the game. The lead was maintained for the remainder of the game with the Patriots trailing closely behind. At halftime, the score was 22-12.
Justin Timberlake took the field for his halftime performance that received mixed reviews. The “Filthy” singer danced through the crowd, and transitioned smoothly through his greatest hits. In the days leading up to the game, there were various rumors regarding who would be his guest performer. One controversial speculation hinted that Timberlake was planning to honor the late Minneapolis native, Prince, by using a holographic image of the singer. Prince had expressed during his lifetime that disapproved of holographic tributes to dead celebrities and his family tweeted out that they did not consent to the use of Prince’s image in that manner. Rather than a hologram, Timberlake honored Prince by projecting a video onto a large sheet in a way that was reminiscent to Prince’s 2007 Super Bowl halftime show. The sea of green transformed as the wristbands and finger flashlights given to Super Bowl goers illuminated purple. Following Timberlake’s show, Prince’s family tweeted a thumbs up emoji, signaling their approval.
With the second half underway, the intensity of the game picked up. Players from both teams understood what the victory would mean. For the Patriots, it would mark the continuation of a dynasty. For the Eagles, they would be bringing the win home to a city of devoted fans that have waited decades for the title. In the fourth quarter, the Patriots managed to pull ahead by a single point – 33-32 – with 9 minutes left in the game. Tight End, Zach Ertz, caught a pass at the 6-yard line, took three steps, and dove into the end zone with 2:55 left on the clock. Ertz’s wife, Julie Johnson Ertz, a soccer player on the U.S. Women’s National Team and World Cup champion, was at the game to witness her husband’s game winning play.
I was lucky enough to have met Julie Ertz before the game. She was sitting with a friend in the same section that I was in and had been nice enough to take a photo with me. The pair, who many have been describing as #relationshipgoals, may hold the title for the world’s most athletic couple. With two separate championships under their belts, it is undeniable that they are extremely talented people. Their support for one another has been well documented. A video of Julie’s reaction, as she had been unable to attend the NFC championship due having to play in a game with her own team, to hearing that the Eagles had made the Super Bowl went viral. A subsequent video of Zach tearing up when shown his wife’s reaction surfaced, causing them to be one of America’s favorite duos.
In the final few seconds of the game, Brady, desperate not to lose his MVP status, threw an impressive Hail Mary pass into the end zone but it was knocked down. The crowd erupted as green and white confetti was shot into the air. The Eagles had managed to pull off one of the greatest upsets of all time.
Foles, who threw for three touchdowns and caught another on Sunday, was awarded MVP. He became the first backup quarterback to win MVP since Brady himself had accepted the honor in 2001.
The celebratory parade is scheduled for this Thursday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
