Spotify Announces girl in red as Its Next RADAR Artist

Today, Spotify’s global emerging artist development program, RADAR, has announced its latest artist partnership for the US: the Oslo-based pop sensation, girl in red, aka Marie Ulven.
girl in red has also just announced her debut album, if i could make it go quiet, out April 30th, and released its accompanying first single, “Serotonin.”  The result of a collaboration with FINNEAS and a huge pop anthem that speaks to Ulven’s struggles with mental health, the arena-ready tune can be heard HERE

Following her breakout single, “i wanna be your girlfriend,” which has been streamed over 150 Million times on Spotify, girl in red’s music has adorned some of Spotify’s most popular playlists including New Music Friday, LOREM, Oyster, Ultimate Indie, Out Now, and many more — 364 playlists, to be exact! Her cover of Maggie Rogers’s “Say it” for Spotify’s Studio Oyster has been beloved by media and fans around the world, as well as by Rogers herself. With 7 Million monthly listeners on Spotify, her music has also been celebrated by press outlets around the world like The New York Times, Paper Magazine, NME, DAZED, Rolling Stone, Pigeons & Planes and more.

Today’s announcement is accompanied by new RADAR photos of girl in red located HERE and a blog post on Spotify’s For The Record newsroom blog HERE that includes a full rundown of the program, and a Q&A with the artist, which you should feel free to use for your own coverage.
girl in red’s appointment to the RADAR program will include features in the RADAR playlist, a Spotify Singles recording, promotional support for her upcoming releases, a full suite of out-of-home advertising and on-platform marketing, and social promotion. girl in red’s RADAR campaign will also include a forthcoming mini-documentary to premiere later this year.
Says Ned Monahan, Spotify’s Head of Global Hits: “We’ve been closely watching girl in red’s steady ascent over the past few years — she’s built a tight-knit community of devoted fans in a remarkably organic way, based on her self-assured songwriting and deeply personal lyrics — all as an independent artist.  We’re beyond excited for her debut full-length, and look forward to helping with her global ascent via RADAR.”

When asked what she looks forward to about being a RADAR artist, girl in red says: “Taking over the world! That’s what I’m looking forward to. Having my music in people’s ears— that’s like the coolest thing ever. RADAR, then world domination!”

girl in red’s appointment as the fifth US RADAR artist follows the success of Spotify’s previous US RADAR artists Alaina Castillo, J.I The Prince of N.Y, The Kid LAROI, and Flo Milli, all joining 175 RADAR-affiliated emerging artists around the world. Last fall, Spotify celebrated the program’s six month anniversary with the launch of its global RADAR hub on-platform.

The program has propelled the success of artists around the globe like Rina Sawayama, Young T & Bugsey,Zoe Wees, Lous and the Yakuza, and more.

Save Our Stages

By: Gabrielle Archuleta

With Covid-19 making an impact on businesses, the live music industry has been among those hit the hardest. The loss in revenue is estimated to be $8.9 billion, along with the comedy and performing arts entertainment. More than 90% of independent venues are at risk of being permanently shut down. The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) is working hard to get emergency relief funds out to these venues in dire need. With the help of YouTube, NIVA and Save Our Stages created a virtual concert to help raise money, which will benefit these independent venues. The list of venues is on their website. Artists from around the country have joined together in an effort to raise awareness and save the stages they once performed in.

These venues have supported many big artists and have even launched careers for many. Not only are the artists feeling the impact, but the employees behind the scenes are as well. From the sound to the stage crew, many of them are left without a job and fear what will come next. Fans are left with tickets to be refunded and the uncertainty of future shows to come. This leaves the music industry shaken when it comes to the revenue that concerts bring. Concerts generate more money than streaming music on popular platforms such as Spotify, Apple music and Pandora. Popular artists such as Drake have made $23.7 million in one year from streaming, yet his last tour, Summer Sixteen featuring Future, grossed $85 million. Save our stages is the saving platform for artists, fans and lovers of music to support the venues we know and love and keep the live music alive.

Kicking off their first ever virtual event, an exclusive trailer narrated by Neil Young released footage featuring various iconic artists performing in these at-risk venues and some of the earliest known footage of Neil Young performing at the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, CT. This 3-day virtual event lasted from October 16th-18th. Day one started out with Alec Benjamin performing at Hotel Café in Los Angeles, CA. There was no audience, just the performers. Some talked of past show experiences and selling out venues. Following him was Billie Eilish’s brother, Finneas who is breaking out on his own, releasing his first single called Can’t Wait To Be Dead. Other artists for day one included, Sebastian Yatra, Dizzy Fae, Macklemore, YG, and Dillon Francis. Marshmellow and Demi Lovato hit the stage at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA. They performed their hit single together It’s Okay Not To Be Okay, as well as talked about their experiences in independent venues they’ve played in and seen other artists play in. Macklemore performed in Seattle, WA singing hits that included Ten Thousand Hours, Glorious, Good Old Days and a few others during his thirty-minute set. While G-Eazy took pieces of his hits and performed over a dozen songs in his set at The Independent in San Francisco, CA.

Day two kicked off with an even bigger list of performers. Sixteen artists each in their own independent venue to perform in. Jason Mraz was the first up, singing the best of his songs from I’m Yours to I Won’t Give Up out of the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego, CA. Rise Against brought the rock style back to the stage singing six of their hits from the Metro in Chicago,IL. Miley Cyrus played at the Whiskey-Go-Go in Los Angeles, CA wearing all black Rockstar attire. Though she had a short playlist, it was filled with fun energy. Also playing out of Los Angles from Troubadour, the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl talks about his first experience at the Toubadour and meeting Bret Michaels for the first time. They start out with Skin and Bones continue with My Hero, These Days, Times Like These and end it with everyone’s favorite Everlong. The Roots performed a longer set list that lasted a little over an hour at the Apollo Theater in New York, NY. Wrapping up day two was Major Lazor performing out of Gramps in Miami, FL. He had a setlist similar to length of The Roots lasting a little over an hour and promoting Save Our Stages throughout his set. To many of these artists, the venues that are at stake are not only where they got their start in the music world but also where they discovered music. Demi Lovato mentions one of her first concerts was at an independent venue where she had seen Paramore.

The final day came with some big names. Little Big Town plays at the Exit/In in Nashville, TN. They talk about their first show and replayed one of their classic songs, Boondocks as an encore. The last song is a fan favorite, Girl Crush. Dave Matthews performs solo at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA. His setlist includes a new song that is played for the first-time live called the Ocean and the Butterfly. The Lumineers wrap up this event, taking it back home to Colorado at the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, CO. Reminiscing on the songs they’ve played in small independent venues and how great songs such as Ophelia came from those experiences and performing them.

Save our stages is not just important to the artists, but to the fans and music lovers all over the nation. There are over 2,000 venues that have joined the National Independent Venue Association to help save theses venues and keep not only the jobs that come with it but the live music experience we love and miss. Though this virtual event is over, the fight is not. Save our venues has raised over $1,000,000 and has a set goal of $5,000,000. The funds will be administered by the Giving Back Fund, a non-profit organization. The money will go to the venues in dire need and in fear of being shut down. With the help of all the artists who participated along with Youtube, NIVA and every person who donated, we can only hope that enough money is raised to save these venues.

BILLIE EILISH – NO TIME TO DIE

Five-time GRAMMY® Award winning Darkroom/Interscope Records artist Billie Eilish has today revealed the official music video for ‘No Time To Die,’ the original song written for the 25th James Bond motion picture, No Time To Die.

WATCH | LISTEN

Directed by Daniel Kleinman, the visual interweaves footage of Billie Eilish with scenes taken from the highly anticipated upcoming James Bond motion picture. Watch HERE.

The song is out via Darkroom/Interscope Records and was produced by Billie’s brother; fellow multi GRAMMY® Award winning FINNEAS alongside Stephen Lipson, with orchestral arrangements by Hans Zimmer and Matt Dunkley, and guitar from Johnny Marr. 18-year-old Eilish is officially the youngest artist in history to both write and record a James Bond theme song. Listen HERE.

Speaking on Billie Eilish and FINNEAS’ involvement in the film’s title track, No Time To Die producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli revealed “Billie and Finneas have written an incredibly powerful and moving song for No Time To Die, which has been impeccably crafted to work within the emotional story of the film.”

Billie Eilish said, “It feels crazy to be a part of this in every way. To be able to score the theme song to a film that is part of such a legendary series is a huge honor.”

FINNEAS adds, “Writing the theme song for a Bond film is something we’ve been dreaming about doing our entire lives. There is no more iconic pairing of music and cinema than the likes of Goldfinger and Live and Let Die. We feel so so lucky to play a small role in such a legendary franchise, long live 007.”

The film’s director Cary Joji Fukunaga shared, “there are chosen few who record a Bond theme. I am a huge fan of Billie and Finneas. Their creative integrity and talent are second to none.”

In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

No Time To Die will be released in theaters globally from November 12 in the U.K. through Universal Pictures International and in the U.S on November 20, from MGM via their United Artists Releasing banner.

Billie Eilish and FINNEAS will also be joining Daniel Craig for James Bond Day with a very special interview and performance on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, October 5.

‘No Time To Die’ is out everywhere now.

Celeste – Little Runaway

Celeste, a soul singer from the UK and winner of BBC Sound of 2020, released a new single titled “Little Runaway.”

The song, which premiered as the Hottest Record on BBC Radio, is accompanied by a music video directed by Sophie Jones, who has worked with Celeste before.

Celeste said the song is about losing faith and seeking answers outside this world.

“My favourite line in the song is ‘good news I could use some.’ I believe everyone has a guardian angel, a protector, and this is me talking to mine,” she said.

The video for the piano-based song gives viewers something of a fisheye view. We’re looking up at everything that transpires throughout the video, sort of like how Celeste is looking up for answers.

Between the piano and Celeste’s all-powerful vocals, this song really captures the feeling of being down and out. Anyone whose problems have fallen on deaf ears or has sought answers to no avail will have no trouble relating to this track.

This song follows her previous single “I Can See The Change,” which was produced by FINNEAS, brother of Billie Eilish and star in his own right.

“Celeste is gonna go down as one of the greats. It was a thrill to produce this song for her,” he said in an Instagram post promoting “I Can See The Change.”

Meat Causes Cancer

The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) new guidelines for cancer reduction were revealed recently and it’s no surprise that they recommend avoiding or reducing meat intake. The ACS is advising the public to consume far less processed and read meats while shifting to more plant-based whole foods. In the guidelines they do advise consuming nutrient-rich, high in fiber foods like vegetables, whole grains, beans, fruits, and peas. “Eat the rainbow” as we’ve all heard for years.

These new guidelines follow in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) stance released in 2015 where they famously classified red meats as a Group 2A carcinogen that was “probably carcinogenic to humans”. They referenced studies that lined consistent consumption of red meat to colorectal cancer.

New Day New Chef: Support and Feed Edition focuses on the organization’s work supplying food to children’s charities, homeless and domestic abuse shelters, food banks, family and senior centers by supporting vegan restaurants in Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia. Filmed largely with robotic cameras during the COVID-19 outbreak, the show follows Maggie Baird, (actress, screenwriter, vegan, and mother of musicians Billie Eilish and Finneas, who are also vegan) on her journey to create Support and Feed. Two episodes are now available to stream on Prime Video, with more released weekly.

Celeste – I Can See The Change

Soul singer and BBC Sound of 2020 winner Celeste has shared the official video for her sweeping FINNEAS-produced new single “I Can See The Change,” out now via Interscope Records. The video features iconic footage from the historic 1963 March on Washington.

“The song was written from a very personal and introspective place,” Celeste explains, “however it has taken on a new and more powerful meaning because of what has been happening with COVID-19 and the global reinvigoration of the Black Lives Matter movement. The video was shot at home in my living room, which was completely blacked out using thick, heavy fabric. It was the hottest day of the year so far, so it was a challenge. It was directed by Sophie Jones and shot remotely via Zoom with my housemate Holly Milk who took on the role of camera person, lighting operator and all-round life saver.”

Celeste’s spine-tingling performance of her song “Strange” at this year’s BRIT Awards, coinciding with her Rising Star award win, was a watershed moment for the British-Jamaican singer, placing her in the spotlight in front of luminaries like Stormzy, Dave, Harry Styles and Billie Eilish. Stormzy called it “a perfect song!” while Billie and her songwriter-producer brother FINNEAS have proven to be some of her most outspoken supporters yet. Celeste and FINNEAS ultimately stayed in touch and decided to collaborate on the new song, finishing it during lockdown. Upon the song’s release, FINNEAS shared via his Instagram “Celeste is gonna go down as one of the greats. It was a thrill to produce this song for her.”

Celeste New Track

Ascendant soul singer and BBC Sound of 2020 winner Celeste releases her sweeping, optimistic new single “I Can See The Change,” today via Interscope Records. Produced by FINNEAS, “I Can See The Change” is a song about finding hope in the wake of adversity and realising that a brighter future lies ahead.

Speaking about the story behind the new single, Celeste explains, “It was a strange time for me as externally lots of exciting things were happening in my life, but internally I was feeling flat. I felt disconnected from myself and the world around me, so I knew something needed to change… It’s difficult for me to fully articulate, but when I started writing the song I pictured a blurry, unidentified image far off in the distance that I knew I had to move closer to in order to understand what it was and perhaps what it meant, but also realizing that the journey wasn’t going to be easy. Ultimately the song is about hope and change but knowing that to obtain this requires effort, patience and conviction.”

Celeste and FINNEAS met at the Brit Awards and ultimately stayed in touch. They decided to collaborate on the new song, finishing it during lockdown. “I saw Celeste perform at the Brits back in February and was blown away,” he reveals. “She commanded the stage in a way that was simultaneously intimate and massive, and I immediately went home and downloaded her entire catalog. When I was approached about producing ‘I Can See The Change,’ I was thrilled. I have been lucky to produce songs for a few artists who I think will never go out or style and Celeste is certainly on that list.”

Celeste has kept herself busy throughout the UK lockdown with stripped-back and socially distanced performances for the likes of COLORS, the World Health Organisation’s Global Citizen sessions (hand-picked by Chris Martin), The Graham Norton Show and BBC Children

In Need’s Big Night In, for which she performed a poignant cover of the late Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me” live from her living room. In these strange times with live shows cancelled and artists having to adapt to the new normal, Celeste has come into her own – that singular voice shining through.
