The Avalanches Announce Tour

Today Australian sample pioneers The Avalanches announce a 2022 North American tour. General ticket on-sale begins at 10:00am local time this Friday, July 23 at The Avalanche’s website. The tour showcases The Avalanches members Robbie Chater and Tony DiBlasi in an all-new electronic stage setup. Kicking off on February 17, 2022 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., The Avalanches are set to take the audience on a cosmic journey, as they explore the vibrational relationship between light, sound, and spirit.

The early 2022 North American tour announcement follows a string of recent Australian shows for the duo. The Sydney Morning Herald praised the fantastical show, declaring “The Avalanches deliver a sample of heaven they united The Bowl by focusing on the enduring power of voices in a hive-mind two-man DJ set on an almighty sound system.” Double J agreed noting, “Armed with an array of synths and samplers, Robbie Chater and Tony DiBlasi piece together a glorious, cohesive set that serves as an emotional journey any Avalanches fan should be pleased to take.” In 2017, The Avalanches played their first-ever live shows in America, which included two mesmerizing sets at Coachella that landed in The Los Angeles Times Best Coachella Performances and Rolling Stone’s 15 Best Things We Saw At Coachella.

The Avalanches recently commemorated the 20 anniversary of their ground-breaking debut album, Since I Left You, with the release of a deluxe edition featuring numerous bonus tracks including fresh mixes from such artists as MF Doom, Black Dice, Leon Vynehall, Sinkane and Carl Craig. The anniversary edition, which just hit No. 1 on the NACC Electronic college radio chart, is available now in vinyl, CD and digital formats HERE. The release and subsequent touring in support of Since I Left You was followed by a 16-year radio silence, which was broken with the release of The Avalanches sophomore album, Wildflower (Astralwerks), which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart and atop the Australian Albums chart in 2016. Their third album, We Will Always Love You (Astralwerks), was awarded four stars byRolling Stone and won the prestigious 2020 Australian Music Prize. Following the release of We Will Always Love You, The Avalanches performed a very special live streamed DJ set on the rooftop of iconic Melbourne institution Curtin House. The duo spun tunes from their own catalogue along with favorites and deep cuts from their vast and eclectic record collections.

The Avalances – Since I Left You Deluxe Edition

The 20th-anniversary edition of The Avalanches‘ groundbreaking debut album, Since I Left You, has been released via Astralwerks. Originally released in Australia in 2000 and in the U.S./U.K. in 2001, Since I Left You was named one of the year’s best albums by critics around the world and later placed in the Top 10 of Pitchfork’s Top 200 Albums of the 2000s and in the Top 20 of Rolling Stone’s Greatest EDM Albums of All Time. Since I Left You 20th-Anniversary Deluxe Edition is available in vinyl, CD, and digital formats HERE.

In the hours leading up to the release of the deluxe edition, The Avalanches shared the visualizer for “Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life” (MF DOOM Remix), one of the remarkable remixes exclusive to the deluxe edition. A previously unheard vocal contribution on the track serves as a bittersweet homage from the late, enigmatic master of the hip-hop underground, who passed away last October. Daniel Dumilethe, who performed as MF DOOM, was praised by The New York Times for forging “a style that was intricate and imaginative, calling on both esoteric and lowbrow references as well as cartoonish imagery in lyrics that could be poignantly emotional.” Born in London and raised on Long Island, Dumilethe released six albums plus full-length collaborations with Madlib and Danger Mouse, among others.

Prince Paul, the de facto fourth member of De La Soul and renowned remixer of Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick and Queen Latifah, revisits the album’s exhilarating title track and acclaimed British producer/DJ Leon Vynehall brings a profound sense of reflection to his remix of “Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life.” The deluxe edition also includes fresh mixes from Mario Caldato Jr., who produced the Beastie Boys’ multi-Platinum classics Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty.

No album ever made history quite like The Avalanches‘ debut. A meticulous labor of love sifted from the second-hand record bins of Melbourne, Since I Left You was an unprecedented act of musical invention filtered through the loving hands of young music-obsessed DJs and musicians to blossom into the ultimate feelgood world party soundtrack. The boundary-pushing orchestration of samples, some say as many as 3,500 uniquely sourced and spliced sound fragments, was unanimously acclaimed as an act of technical genius. But the glowing heart of the project, a story of oneness through time, space, and infinite diversity, was the magic spell that made the world melt in elation.

Since I Left You’s achievement was to break the easy but facile equation of depth with darkness, intensity with misery: on this record, it is happiness that is the complicated and mysterious state.”

The release and subsequent touring in support of Since I Left You was followed by a 16-year radio silence, which was broken with the release of The Avalanches’ sophomore album, Wildflower, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart and atop the Australian Albums chart in 2016. Their third album,  We Will Always Love You, was awarded four stars by Rolling Stone and won the prestigious 2020 Australian Music Prize.

Announced as the inaugural Luminary Artists in Residence, The Avalanches will be performing Since I Left You with Australia’s Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on July 30 as part of “Illuminate Adelaide”: a major new event celebrating innovation, music, art, and light.

The Avalanches × The International Space Orchestra

Today, The Avalanches and The International Space Orchestra (ISO) come together to share their collaborative music video for the Australian alt-rock/electronica pioneers’ new track, “Wherever You Go” ft. Jamie xx, Neneh Cherry and CLYPSO. The video, filmed live during lockdown, is a meteorite shower of space science, planet-poking and harp-playing spacecraft operators coming together with The Avalanches’ Robbie Chater and Tony DiBlasi in the most cosmic collaboration imaginable. The clip, which marks the first time The Avalanches have appeared in a music video, can be viewed here.

Robbie Chater and Tony DiBlasi of The Avalanches say “We are forever grateful to Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian and The International Space Orchestra for a truly magical, inspiring and connective experience. During a hard lockdown, it has renewed our faith in music, humanity and the power of connection, science and love.”

“We have so much respect for all those at NASA and SETI Institute and the work they do pushing the boundaries of human exploration, in trying to find the answers to the universe, and who and what lay beyond our neighborhood.”

As part of a musical collaboration, The Avalanches also worked on developing a sonification of the Arecibo message created by SETI Institute co-founder Frank Drake, who shared the original message with the band.

“We would also like to thank Dr. Frank Marchis and Dr. Frank Drake for all their help in deciphering the Arecibo message for inclusion on our upcoming project. It’s the first time this message has been translated into music,” added Chater and DiBlasi.

Created in 2012, ISO is directed by SETI Institute Designer of Experiences Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian along with musical director Evan Price. Under Ben Hayoun-Stépanian’s leadership, ISO has performed sold-out shows on some of California’s most prestigious stages, including San Francisco Symphony Hall, The Fillmore and the Hollywood Bowl with world-renowned, Grammy award-winning artists such as Bobby Womack, Damon Albarn, Beck, Sigur Rós, Maywa Denki and Savages.

Of the collaboration, Ben Hayoun-Stépanian says, “The Avalanches have been working on a space inspired album for a few years now. Researching sounds coming from space, they came across the brilliant work developed by our scientists at the SETI Institute and by the International Space Orchestra. Very quickly, it became apparent that our musical collaboration should focus on further inspiring new perspectives and desires to understand the universe. In the current context we could not make our performance happen in real life, but we decided to make it happen regardless and this performance is the result of our online meetups. We hope that our performance will allow for further curiosity and interest to research further galaxies and extraterrestrial intelligence and life. Working with The Avalanches has been our greatest honour, one of the most cosmic experiences we have encountered. Robbie and Tony are truly inspiring, kind, caring and just too brilliantly talented. Thank you to them for having us at the International Space Orchestra and the SETI Institute a part of their outer-space musical journey.”

Released in July 2020 by Astralwerks, “Wherever You Go” ft. Jamie xx, Neneh Cherry and CLYPSO is an epic track that begins with greetings from planet Earth, sampled from The Voyager Golden Record, a gold-plated copper disk launched into space by Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977. The New York Times said,  “The track moves from buzzy, beeping, tinkling abstraction to a thumping dance floor,” while PASTE Magazine hailed “Wherever You Go” as one of the “Best Songs Of The Week.”

The Avalanches – Wherever You Go

The Avalanches shared two new songs from their forthcoming album along with a pair of stunning visualizers. “Wherever You Go” feat. Jamie XX, Neneh Cherry and CLYPSO premiered in the U.K. earlier today on the BBC 6 Music’s breakfast show.

The Avalanches, with co-production from acclaimed UK musician/producer Jamie XX, have created an epic track that begins with greetings from planet Earth – sampled from The Voyager Golden Record, a gold-plated copper disk launched into space by Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977 – and erupts in a frenzy. Vocals from the iconic Neneh Cherry and Sydney-based troptronica producer CLYPSO capture this moment in time, when love and music still offer hope in the face of “the whole damn world incinerating.” Mick Jones (Big Audio Dynamite, The Clash) plays piano on the track.

“Reflecting Light” feat. Sananda Maitreya and Vashti Bunyan examines the sounds that haunt our lives and reverberate through space. Sananda Maritreya’s deeply soulful vocals evoke transformation amid a cosmic audio swirl that incorporates a sample of “Glow Worms,” which originally appeared on influential English singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan’s 1970 debut album, Just Another Diamond Day.

The Avalanches unveiled their first new music since 2016’s Wildflower – the track “We Will Always Love You” feat. Blood Orange, which was praised as “a plush compendium of longing” by The New York Times. “Running Red Lights” feat. Rivers Cuomo & Pink Siifu followed in March, earning attention from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME, Billboard and The FADER, among others. The accompanying video was created in loving memory of David Berman, and stars dancer/choreographer Erik Cavanaugh with a cameo by Hollywood billboard queen Angelyne.

On their groundbreaking debut, Since I Left You, The Avalanches presented the world with a totally unique sound, crafted by meticulously combining over 3,500 vinyl samples. This approach set a precedent for dance music, inspiring a whole generation of musicians and producers. Released in Australia in 2000 and in the U.S. and the U.K. in 2001, Since I Left You is now regarded as a modern classic, It was named one of the year’s best albums by critics around the world and later placed in the Top 10 of Pitchfork’s Top 200 Albums of the 2000s and in the Top 20 of Rolling Stone’s Greatest EDM Albums of All Time. The video for the title track won Best Video at the 2001 MTV Europe Music Awards and was named as one of the top music videos of the 2000s by Pitchfork.

The release and subsequent touring in support of Since I Left You was followed by a 16-year radio silence, which was broken with the release of The Avalanches’ sophomore album, Wildflower (Astralwerks). It debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart and atop the Australian Albums chart in 2016. Wildflower earned six ARIA Award nominations and international acclaim, with The Guardian hailing it as “a joyous journey” and Pitchfork proclaiming it “better than just about any music ever made” and “an album that could have been made by nobody but the Avalanches.” About Astralwerks: Established in 1993 in New York City, Astralwerks was the brainchild of Caroline Records staffers who saw an opportunity for a label focused on the nascent electronic and ambient scene. The Avalanches – Running Red Lights

Astralwerks released The Avalanches’ soaring new single, “Running Red Lights.” Featuring the unmistakable voice of Rivers Cuomo, the track finds the Weezer front man in a single-minded mood, emotional – “I’m a thundercloud, ready to burst like Schrödinger” – and running red lights to reach his lover. Set against The Avalanches’ ghostly dreamscape, Cuomo sounds as though he’s speeding along a cosmic highway, while synths, harps and tambourines swell, sparkle and cascade all around. Enter Pink Siifu, incantating the words of the late, great David Berman (lifted from the Purple Mountains’ tune “Darkness And Cold”) and clairvoyance seems to hang in the ether.
