Taylor Sheridan Expands Yellowstone Universe

Paramount+ and MTV Entertainment Studios reveal upcoming slate from Academy Award® nominee Taylor Sheridan.

With 101 Studios to serve as production partner, lineup includes, Mayor of Kingstown starring Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner, Land Man, 6666 (working title) and previously announced Y: 1883.

MTV Entertainment Studios announced during today’s ViacomCBS Streaming Event presentation a slate of upcoming series for the rebranded streaming service from Academy Award nominee and Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan.

On the heels of the success of Paramount Network’s Yellowstone – #1 cable show of 2020 – Sheridan will create new series under his overall deal with ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment that include both Mayor of Kingstown and Land Man, in addition to expanding the Yellowstone universe with 6666 (working title) and the previously announced Yellowstone prequel, Y: 1883 that was teased during Super Bowl LV.

Yellowstone is the #1 show with tens of millions of fans based on the characters Taylor has created and his gift for world building,” said Chris McCarthy, President, MTV Entertainment Group.  “With Paramount+, our strategy is to supercharge subscribers by franchising our biggest hit IP like we’re doing with Yellowstone prequel Y: 1883 and build new IP with marquee creative talent like Taylor.”

MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN 

Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family – power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry.  Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither. Mayor of Kingstown will be executive produced by Sheridan, co-creator Hugh Dillon, Jeremy Renner, Antoine Fuqua, David Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and Michael Friedman.

LAND MAN

Set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas, Land Man is a modern day tale of fortune seeking in the world of oil rigs. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics. Land Man will be executive produced by Sheridan and produced by David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

YELLOWSTONE SPINOFF, 6666 (WORKING TITLE)

Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing … The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world class cowboys are born and made. The series will be executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

Y: 1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land – Montana. From MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, Y: 1883 will be executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

In the previously announced deal, Sheridan is set to create exclusive multi-platform content with MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios under the multi-year pact which includes five cycles per year of scripted and procedural series. Content will be exclusive to ViacomCBS including but not limited to Paramount Network, Paramount+, CBS and other VCBS brands and platforms.

Simon & Schuster’s Tiller Press announced that it will publish a historical cookbook by Max Miller based on his popular YouTube show, ‘Tasting History. The untitled cookbook, slated for publication in 2022, will feature some of the show’s most popular and unusual ancient recipes.

On ‘Tasting History,’ Miller recreates historical recipes from the Medieval and Renaissance Eras, Ancient Greek and Roman times and beyond, and spotlights traditional foods from around the world. The show’s popularity has exploded since the channel’s inception in February 2020. Amid nationwide stay-at-home-orders, ‘Tasting History’ has amassed over 570K+ subscribers and 23M+ total channel views, with viewers tuning in faithfully each Tuesday for their latest culinary history lesson, and perhaps to catch a glimpse of Max’s beloved feline companions, Jaime and Cersei.

“Here at Tiller Press, we love to discover emerging voices. Smithsonian Channel – ULTIMATE VIKING

Smithsonian Channel has authorized an innovative new series that combines adventure with rich history to unveil the never before seen secrets of Viking society. The series, whose working title is ULTIMATE VIKING, will be hosted by Kristofer Hivju, who played Tormund Giantsbane in HBO’s Game of Thrones, and award-winning journalist Gry Molvær Hivju.

“We are very excited to host this living history adventure series set in our beautiful country Norway,” said Gry Molvær Hivju and Kristofer Hivju, the co-founders of Tindefilm. “We are proud to show the fjords, ocean and wild mountains that our ancestors saw. For us, this series is all about a genuine extreme experience based on Viking society, set deep in the heart of the land of the Vikings. It’s going to be exciting, ambitious and based on historical evidence.”

The series is also set to include a one-hour documentary slated to premiere in 2021 on Smithsonian Channel. Filming for the show has begun and production will take place in Norway and the UK, with a custom Viking settlement being constructed on the Norwegian coast. The adventure series will feature a diverse cast of contemporary, highly skilled men and women who will be challenged to see if they have what it takes to live as true Vikings. 

Each episode is rooted in authentic Viking knowledge, exploring every aspect of the lifestyle to discover what it was truly like to live as a Viking over 1000 years ago. The show will follow ordinary people participating in remarkable expeditions under harsh Nordic conditions. The clans will compete against each other in a series of often extreme Viking survival expeditions, challenges and tasks based on historical facts, literature and archaeological evidence. 

“We are always looking for innovative ways to re-invent the entertainment experience for our curious global audience,” said David Royle, EVP and Chief Programming Officer of Smithsonian Channel. “Vikings have long captured the public imagination and this brand-new format pushes boundaries to create a new way for our audience to be enthralled, sometimes appalled and often surprised by the challenges of Viking life.”

The series’ cast lives side by side in a Viking settlement, with every detail true to the era, including the buildings, clothes, tools and food. Participants will need to master tools like axes and swords, learn to forage and fish in Norway’s snow-capped mountains, and master the art of sailing a Viking ship while mentored by the world’s leading Viking historians. 

ULTIMATE VIKING (w/t) is produced by Wildflame Productions Ltd., Zig Zag Productions Ltd. and Tindefilm for Smithsonian Channel. The Series is directed by Showrunner Stephen Shearman, with original music composed by Silvia Strand.

Nick Cannon Anti-Semitic Comments

ViacomCBS has fired TV personality Nick Cannon after decades of partnership following anti-Semitic remarks that he made on his podcast, Cannon Class. The episode, allegedly filmed last year, featured Professor Griff, ex-member of the rap group Public Enemy who had been kicked out in 1989 over anti-Semitic comments before rejoining. The two discussed Jewish dominance in media and that they have robbed the identity of the original Hebrew people, who are black.

“You can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people,” he said on the show, agreeing with Professor Griff. He even went as far to suggest that “The people that don’t have [melanin] are a little less,” and that “They had to be savages” (referring to Jewish, white, and European people.

Cannon has faced ample backlash from the conversation, and he apologized afterward, asserting that “I do not condone hate speech nor the spread of hateful rhetoric,” in one of many tweets. However, when ViacomCBS cut ties with him, he defended himself in another lengthy Facebook post, saying “I will not be bullied, silenced, or continuously oppressed by any organization, group, or corporation.”

He condemned ViacomCBS and demanded full ownership of his MTV show Wild N’ Out Cannon will keep his stint as host of “The Masked Singer”, but a planned talk show will be on hold until next year, according to a statement from Lionsgate and Debmar Murray today. He also personally announced that he will take a hiatus from his LA radio show Nick Cannon Mornings for a period of personal reflection.

To All The Music

Awesomeness Films, a subsidiary of ViacomCBS, and Capitol Records today announced To All The Music, a virtual concert event celebrating the vinyl release of the To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You original soundtrack, premiering on Saturday, July 18, at 5 p.m. PT on AwesomenessTV’s YouTube channel.

Hosted by Lana Condor, who stars as Lara Jean Covey in the Netflix film, To All The Music will bring the movie’s cast and musical artists together to perform hit songs from the soundtrack and give fans an inside scoop behind the music and movie, spilling secrets and surprises along the way. The special will also feature original ‘love letters’ to give fans exclusive insights about the songs created for the film. In addition, Awesomeness is partnering with Save The Music Foundation to help raise money toward restoring public school music programs across the country. Throughout the special, viewers will learn about Save The Music’s mission and be invited to donate through the YouTube stream if they wish.

Awesomeness is also making a $55,000 donation to fund a J Dilla Music Technology Grant at a high school in the U.S. Said Condor, “Playing Lara Jean has brought so much joy to my life and a huge part of what makes our To All The Boys universe so special is the music.
