New Latinx Community Studies

Leading Latino digital media company mitú, in partnership with premier multicultural marketing and communications agency The MRKT, released the first of a series of studies titled The mitú InTell Series. The studies aim to gain and socialize insights on the current state of the U.S. Hispanic community while digging deeper into their motivations and behaviors behind topics ranging from health and wellness to finance, sports, food, commerce, and travel.

“As a digital media brand that has stood for Latinx representation for 10 years, mitú has conversations with millions of Latinos daily. This interaction and our editorial process allows us to gather signals and real-world concerns from our audience to develop insights not only on what our community is thinking, but also why, and to do so while the topics are still actionable and timely,” said President of mitú, Stephen Brooks. “Ultimately we feel a responsibility to not only share these insights, but to give a voice to our audience.”

Both mitú and The MRKT are inherently able to provide insights into the state of the U.S. Hispanic population both from a macro, public perspective and at an interpersonal scale, allowing them to uncover nuances and evaluate the community from a unique point of view not seen before.

“As a leading multicultural marketing and communications agency, our team lives and breathes the experiences that permeate the cultural zeitgeist within our community, making the issues that affect the U.S. Hispanic community incredibly evident to us. It is with that real-world and professional experience that we help create these studies which we hope enable other entities and organizations to identify the most current needs of the U.S. Latino population and bring us closer to a future where our community is fully seen and heard.” said President of The MRKT, Marcos Barron.

This first online quantitative study – conducted by a third party, HyperFocus ROI, with a sample size of 1,000 U.S. Hispanics–consisted of evaluating participants for their various attitudes, perceptions and behaviors across a number of demographic segments relative to the broader topic of health & wellness. Four key areas under this topic–medical, mental health, fitness, and nutrition–were evaluated across key audience segments broken out by age, income, gender, and country of origin.

While specific insights relative to each of these four areas were uncovered across the various audience segments, mental health emerged as the most common denominator, garnering the highest overall importance ratings when compared with the other three subcategories, with 65% of all respondents rating mental health as very important. Notably, mental health has declined across all segments of the U.S. Latino population vs. two years ago.

 Additional key findings include:

  • U.S. born Latinos are reporting health issues that affect multiple generations at nearly twice the rate as non U.S. born Latinos.
  • 37% of the Latinos surveyed report that the #1 reason they don’t have a primary care physician is their financial situation, with non U.S. born Latinos expressing this as a barrier with even more frequency at a rate of 46%.
  • Latinos in the lowest income bracket (earning under $49K) are rating all of the health subcategories (medical, mental health, fitness, nutrition) as being somewhat/not at all important to them. However, there are some key barriers and reasons that surfaced on why they may not be placing importance on their health when compared to the other groups.
  • Out of the four subcategories, Latinos aren’t placing as much importance on fitness even though their reported habits are demonstrating that they are exercising at higher rates when compared to two years ago, with 45% stating that they are exercising more often.

Mass Appeal Announces Two New Executive Hires

MASS APPEAL ANNOUNCES TWO NEW TRAILBLAZING EXECUTIVE HIRES

JESSICA RIVERA NAMED GENERAL MANAGER & JENYA MEGGS NAMED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF CONTENT

FEMALE EXECUTIVES TO HELP LEAD THE CHARGE OF MASS APPEAL’S MONUMENTAL #HIPHOP50 PROGRAM

Mass Appeal has announced two new key executive hires – two trailblazing women who will play a pivotal role in elevating and expanding the entertainment company’s presence. Multi-faceted executive Jessica Rivera will serve as the General Manager, Music. In this role, Rivera will oversee creative and day-to-day operations of Mass Appeal’s music division; label, publishing and contributing across Mass Appeal’s other two divisions in content and creative services. Seasoned music and entertainment executive Jenya Meggs will serve as the Senior Vice President of Content where alongside Mass Appeal’s Chief Creative Officer Sacha Jenkins, she will spearhead programming strategies and partnerships of Mass Appeal’s growing content slate.

Over the past year, Mass Appeal has been quietly working to develop the platform, #HipHop50, aimed at celebrating Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary in the most authentic and globally impactful way possible. With #HipHop50, Mass Appeal’s mission is to ensure that Hip Hop’s historic milestone will be celebrated in a way befitting of its massive influence, as well as engage fans across the globe. Mass Appeal partner Nas says, “This is the biggest birthday in the world!” Over the next six months, Mass Appeal will be announcing various partnerships for their #HipHop50 platform with best-in-class companies in verticals ranging from original music, content, podcasts, live experiential, products, education, publishing and more – along with a charitable component attached to everything.

Both Rivera and Meggs will help lead the charge for Mass Appeal’s expansive #HipHop50 program. Rivera will work with Nas to oversee multiple original music projects aimed at celebrating Hip Hop’s incredible history. Meanwhile, Meggs will spearhead the content partnership with Showtime/ViacomCBS, which will encompass unscripted series and features, podcasts, and digital shorts by and about some of the foremost names in the genre.

In her former role as head of artist relations for YouTube’s West Coast territory, Rivera’s achievements included heading up a livestream-based marketing campaign that helped catapult Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time ever. Recognized as one of Billboard’s 2020 R&B/Hip Hop Power Players, Rivera spent 11 years at Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), where she held the position of Executive Vice President/Head of East Coast Operations and Creative, as well as curated or identified the songwriters/producers behind more than 25 chart-topping singles, including the 12-times-platinum  “Love The Way You Lie” by Eminem ft Rihanna, the 11-times-platinum “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars;  and the certified-diamond “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons (one of the best-selling songs in music history). Before joining Universal, Rivera signed Rihanna at 16-years-old to her first publishing deal EMI.

“It’s an inspiring time to join Mass Appeal and continue to build the music division and elevate the artist’s narrative through the synergy of Music and media,” said Rivera. “Hip Hop 50 will uniquely bring together these worlds of creativity, all to celebrate Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary!”

Before joining the Mass Appeal team, Meggs served as the original content producer for Apple Music, where she developed the streaming platform’s innovative Up Next New Artist Program. Additionally, Meggs sold and produced the BET Web Series Brooklyn Blue Sky (2017), as well as executive produced the BET George Floyd Special (2020). Prior to working in production & development, Meggs began her career working in the video marketing department at Universal Music Group and later Warner Music Group. She’s led the video marketing campaigns for GRAMMY Award-winning and multi-platinum selling artists, such as JAY-Z, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Kanye West, Common and Jill Scott.

“I’m excited to use my talents and join Mass Appeal on this journey, to expand the narrative of film and TV, while creating exceptional content,” said Meggs.  “Mass Appeal has brilliantly created a path for authentic storytelling journeys. Hip-Hop 50 will bring together the best we have to offer to serve the culture the most defining celebration it deserves.”

Both Rivera and Meggs will work closely with the company’s CEO Peter Bittenbender and co-founder, Hip Hop legend Nas.

“Great moment as the team expands with the hiring of Jessica and Jenya, both of whom I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with for years. I look forward to working with Jessica as the GM of the label, Jenya as the SVP of content and together as a team as we scale our #HipHop50 program and Mass Appeal’s overall business” – Nasir “Nas” Jones

“Both Jessica and Jenya bring a tremendous amount of experience, passion and relationships to the company at a time that could not be more exciting. Having leadership of their level around #HipHop50 is a dream come true and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.” – Peter Bittenbender

Starlight Xperience for Children

Starlight Children’s Foundation, an organization whose mission is to create moments of joy and comfort for hospitalized kids and their families, unveiled today its newest initiative, Starlight XperienceTM virtual reality, a groundbreaking new technology program that offers millions of seriously ill children a fun and exciting way to explore the world and beyond through the magic of VR.

To watch a video on Starlight Xperience and how it helps kids, please see here.

Built for the Lenovo Mirage Solo with Daydream, Starlight Xperience features a state-of-the-art and hospital-ready headset that comes preloaded with age-appropriate and dynamic content geared toward entertainment and distraction for hospitalized kids, which has been specifically modified to meet strict infection safety protocols for use in hospital settings. Pre-loaded content includes educational field trips to exotic locations through Google Expeditions and Street View, fun interactive stories like Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay by ILMxLAB, and Lola and the Giant, popular apps such as Ocean Rift and Hello Mars, and meditation exercises and therapeutic games such as Relax VR, which allows the patient to escape into beautiful environments.

Starlight Xperience was created in collaboration with Founding Sponsor, Star Wars: Force for Change, the charitable initiative from Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company that harnesses the power of Star Wars to empower and improve the lives of children around the world. Through grant funding provided by The Walt Disney Company and Niagara Cares – the philanthropic arm of Niagara Bottling – as well as charitable donations from grassroots donors, Starlight Xperience will be provided at no cost to Starlight’s network of more than 800 children’s hospitals and other health care facilities across the US.

“We believe Starlight Xperience has the potential to transform the hospital experience for millions of seriously ill children and their families,” said Chris Helfrich, CEO of Starlight Children’s Foundation. “We’re thrilled to stand beside The Walt Disney Company, Google, Lenovo and Niagara Cares in unveiling this exciting new program, which is the latest evolution in our 35-year history of bringing innovative entertainment technologies to hospitalized kids.”

“Providing these unique entertainment experiences reflects our commitment to bring comfort during what can be difficult times for kids and families. This is part of our Disney Team of Heroes initiative, which includes a $100 million commitment to children’s hospitals,” said Elissa Margolis, senior vice president, Enterprise Social Responsibility for The Walt Disney Company. “The collaboration with Google and Lenovo is the perfect blend of technology and content that we’ll be able to deliver to kids during their hospital stay.”

“Our goal has always been to create virtual reality experiences that are accessible, useful, and relevant to as many people as possible,” said Amit Singh, VP of Business & Operations for AR & VR at Google. “Starlight Xperience is a shining example of that goal coming to life in a really great way. We’re thrilled to be able to support Starlight in bringing transporting VR experiences to hospitalized children across the country.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Starlight and Google to bring technology to hospitalized children in their time of need. Helping to provide a solution for the children and their families allows us to truly make a difference for the better,” said Gunjan Shah, general manager for North America Smart Devices at Lenovo.

Starlight Xperience was developed in part through a series of grants provided by Starlight to the CHARIOT program (short for Childhood Anxiety Reduction through Innovation and Technology) at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. CHARIOT implements new technologies in the hospital that are nontraditional yet familiar to children to engage and distract them during stressful or painful procedures, keeping clinical usage in mind and improving upon the typical hospital experience. This past summer, Starlight Xperience was soft launched and tested at five children’s hospitals: Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minn., and Texas Children’s Hospital.

“At Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, virtual reality has been a fantastic addition for our patients,” said Chantel Barney, Ph.D., a clinical scientist who leads Gillette’s VR program. “In some instances, we’ve been able to curb the anxiety and fears our kids typically experience during procedures such as blood draws, transfusions, wound cleanings, casting and more. It’s a wonderful distraction for kids and parents alike.”

“We’re proud to support Starlight Xperience and look forward to bringing smiles to the faces of hospitalized children through this educational and inspirational program,” said Andrew Peykoff II, President and CEO, Niagara Bottling. “This technology makes learning fun and we’re excited to expand the program to even more children.”

Thanks to the grants provided by The Walt Disney Company and Niagara Cares, in addition to the generosity of charitable donations from individuals, Starlight is on track to deliver up to 1,000 Starlight Xperience kits to its network of hospital partners by the end of 2018, with a goal of doubling that by the end of 2019. A donation to Starlight will entertain, educate and inspire hospitalized kids across the US through stimulating immersive experiences that transport children from the hospital to any place in the world – or beyond – through the magic of virtual reality.

The public is invited to learn more and support the program online at www.starlight.org/starlight-xperience.
