Smithsonian Channel – ULTIMATE VIKING

By Cassandra Yany

Smithsonian Channel has authorized an innovative new series that combines adventure with rich history to unveil the never before seen secrets of Viking society. The series, whose working title is ULTIMATE VIKING, will be hosted by Kristofer Hivju, who played Tormund Giantsbane in HBO’s Game of Thrones, and award-winning journalist Gry Molvær Hivju.

“We are very excited to host this living history adventure series set in our beautiful country Norway,” said Gry Molvær Hivju and Kristofer Hivju, the co-founders of Tindefilm. “We are proud to show the fjords, ocean and wild mountains that our ancestors saw. For us, this series is all about a genuine extreme experience based on Viking society, set deep in the heart of the land of the Vikings. It’s going to be exciting, ambitious and based on historical evidence.”

The series is also set to include a one-hour documentary slated to premiere in 2021 on Smithsonian Channel. Filming for the show has begun and production will take place in Norway and the UK, with a custom Viking settlement being constructed on the Norwegian coast. The adventure series will feature a diverse cast of contemporary, highly skilled men and women who will be challenged to see if they have what it takes to live as true Vikings.

Each episode is rooted in authentic Viking knowledge, exploring every aspect of the lifestyle to discover what it was truly like to live as a Viking over 1000 years ago. The show will follow ordinary people participating in remarkable expeditions under harsh Nordic conditions. The clans will compete against each other in a series of often extreme Viking survival expeditions, challenges and tasks based on historical facts, literature and archaeological evidence.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to re-invent the entertainment experience for our curious global audience,” said David Royle, EVP and Chief Programming Officer of Smithsonian Channel. “Vikings have long captured the public imagination and this brand-new format pushes boundaries to create a new way for our audience to be enthralled, sometimes appalled and often surprised by the challenges of Viking life.”

The series’ cast lives side by side in a Viking settlement, with every detail true to the era, including the buildings, clothes, tools and food. Participants will need to master tools like axes and swords, learn to forage and fish in Norway’s snow-capped mountains, and master the art of sailing a Viking ship while mentored by the world’s leading Viking historians.

ULTIMATE VIKING (w/t) is produced by Wildflame Productions Ltd., Zig Zag Productions Ltd. and Tindefilm for Smithsonian Channel. The Series is directed by Showrunner Stephen Shearman, with original music composed by Silvia Strand.

ULTIMATE KING (w/t) aims to re-imagine living history for television audiences across the world,” said Llinos Griffin-Williams, the Executive Producer of Wildflame Productions. “Our new adventure history format pushes living history to another level. It is an extremely ambitious series and one we are thrilled to be making for the Smithsonian Channel.”

Netflix – The Take

By Cassandra Yany

Netflix has fixed a technical issue that left many viewers confused while watching one of the streaming service’s latest releases.

The 2016 film The Take starring Idris Elba was added to Netflix’s library Wednesday. The partly-French film had a bug with the subtitles where only the English lines were captioned and the French lines remained untranslated.

Subscribers quickly took to Twitter to alert Netflix of the issue. One user wrote, “Okay just finished The Take on Netflix and I’m very confused as to why the English subtitles were not included. Half the movie was in French.” Another said, “You can’t watch The Take on @Netflix unless you are past Level 5 French on Rosetta Stone.”

Despite this issue, the film currently holds the no. 3 spot in the Netflix ‘Top 10,’ sitting higher than the streaming service’s most recent original film The Devil All The Time. Netflix resolved the problem as of Monday afternoon and the movie now includes translations of the scenes in French.

The film— known internationally as Bastille Day, according to Essence— stars Idris Elba and “Game of Thrones’” Richard Madden. Forbes reports that the film was set to be released in Europe in early 2016, but was pushed back later in the year due to the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks. It was pulled out of theaters days after its July release due to the truck attack in Nice.

The film was not popular in the U.S., as it was only shown in 100 theaters nationwide. It earned just over $50,000 from its release in the states.

According to television and film news outlet Looper, the action film is about a pickpocket (Richard Madden) who steals a woman’s bag that contains a bomb, intended to go off in an empty building. He disposes of it and the explosion kills four people. He is then taken into custody by a CIA agent (Idris Elba), who quickly realizes that Madden’s character did not mean to take part in the attack. They learn that it was part of a plan by a group of corrupt police officers to rob the French National Bank. The two team up to clear the pickpocket’s name and stop the officers.

Despite the criticism over incorrect subtitling, it seems that the movie is finally getting the attention that it missed during its original release in 2016.

The Marvel Universe Expands To Quidd: Collect All Your Favorite Characters Now!

Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and more are now available as limited-edition digital stickers, GIFs and cards.

Today, Marvel Entertainment, LLC and Quidd, Inc announced a wide-ranging partnership that brings the best of the Marvel Universe to Quidd’s growing community of superfans and collectors.

“We’re incredibly excited to finally announce this news, bringing the Marvel Universe to the Quidd community has been one of our goals since the very beginning,” said Michael Bramlage, co-founder and CEO of Quidd. “Our user base is growing fast and becoming more diverse every day, but the one thing the entire Quidd community has in common is a love of all things Marvel.”

“This is really unlike anything our fans have ever seen,” said Julie Gerola, VP/GM Marketing & Digital Operations at Marvel. “By allowing fans to connect with each other over the characters they love, Quidd brings Marvel to life in an entirely new way.”

First editions of these limited edition iMessage stickers, GIFs and digital trading cards are available to Marvel fans today in Quidd’s free app (http://app.quidd.co/jn6g/UkN04cyymG). In the coming months, nearly 100 different Marvel characters will be turned into limited-edition digital items and made available to own on Quidd. Marvel fans can collect and express themselves by trading for sets of cards or stickering them into their iMessage chats, but they should act quickly: each item is individually-serialized and only a limited number will be produced.

Founded in 2015, Quidd’s Blockchain-like approach creates true scarcity and serendipity, bringing real meaning to the ownership of objects in the digital world. “Owning stuff you love is part of being human and at Quidd, we’re increasingly finding that for young people, digital stuff is more important than physical stuff,” said Bramlage. “These items are very personal because they are one of a kind, something that no one else has. Whether it’s a concert poster, a sports jersey, or limited-edition Spider-Man GIFs on your iPhone, our collections are a fun way for us to express ourselves as individuals.”
