Geppi Gems via Library of Congress for use by 360 Magazine

Geppi Collection Opens at LOC

A new exhibition at the Library of Congress explores how comic books have permeated popular entertainment and influenced U.S. culture, highlighting selections from the Stephen A. Geppi Collection that was generously donated to the national library in 2018.

“Geppi Gems” is now open in the Library’s Graphic Arts Gallery through mid-March 2022. A second rotation with different items is planned for spring 2022. The exhibition now features 33 items from the collection of more than 3,000 cartoons, comic books and related items in the Geppi Collection.

The wide range of rare comics on view span genres including Walt Disney’s iconic characters, westerns, superheroes, science fiction, horror, sports, music and entertainment.

Popeye, Superman, Wonder Woman, Black Panther — some cartoon characters have become both instantly and internationally recognizable, but they didn’t get their start on television or in the movies, but rather on the pages of newspapers and comic books,” said Sara Duke, curator of popular and applied graphic arts, who wrote about the exhibition on the Library’s Picture This blog.

The exhibition explores the role of early newspapers in the development of comic books and characters. As a nod to the collection’s founder, the exhibition also represents the major themes of the former Geppi Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, which operated between 2006 and 2018.

“It’s so gratifying to see more of the Geppi Gems collection made available to the public in this exhibition,” Geppi said. “This and future displays will continue to expose new fans to the rich artistic history of pop culture started here in the United States. I’m more excited than ever and want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to my dear friend and Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, for her vision, as well as the curators and conservators who have worked so hard to make this possible.”

Over the years, Geppi has amassed one of the largest individual collections of vintage comic books and pop culture artifacts in the world.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

  • Popeye in an early syndicated newspaper comic strip from 1931 when the character’s popularity was exploding.
  • Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck during their rise in popularity as animated characters. Walt Disney understood the role of marketing his characters so that they would be instantly recognizable.
  • Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp and Steve McQueen as characters from America’s Wild West translated from Western novels to radio, comics, film and television.
  • Superman’s history with Action Comics and the birth of the comic book superhero from DC Comics, along with examples from the history of Batman and Robin and Wonder Woman.
  • Black Panther’s self-titled debut from Marvel Comics in 1977 and the story of Captain America in The Avengers before he became one of the most popular comic book characters today.
  • Science fiction’s history in comics with examples of dramatic visual expression, including Weird Science and Science and Invention.
  • Terrifying creatures of horror that were brought to visual life through comics in magazines like Creepy.
  • Sports as represented through comic books and cartoon art, including Babe Ruth Sports.
  • Pop culture represented in posters, magazines and collectibles promoting musicians through graphic art, including Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, The Jackson 5 and more.

Free timed entry tickets are available for visitors to the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4

p.m. To plan a visit and reserve tickets, go to loc.gov/visit. Tickets will be released on a rolling 30-day basis. For online versions of the Library’s exhibitions, visit loc.gov/exhibits.

Women Comic Artists are Here #VISIBLEWOMEN

by: Jamia Garrett

On August 5th, 2021 thousands of women took to twitter to share their art portfolios with potential clients and the public using the hashtag #VISIBLEWOMEN. Originally, the tag was targeted at sequential artists by Kelly Sue DeConnick, to shed light to the fact that women in comic art are present in the world and are doing an amazing job at it. The hashtag eventually grew to include women from all artistic fields making the tag a space for creative women from all backgrounds to share pieces themselves to grow their audience. The comic art industry, like so many others is typically a cis-male dominated space with women instead making up a large percentage of children’s and YA graphic novels.

This hashtag was an act of protest due to the fact that women in this field are often overlooked and underrepresented. They are instead passed over for their male counterparts and, like in any field, paid significantly less. In 2018, from July-December both Marvel and DC Comics ran a study on their credited creators. During those months DC Comics released 391 new comics. Only 17.2% of the credited staff were women. Marvel Comics released 486 new comics with only 16.3% of their credited creators being women. These percentages don’t include the considerably small amount of non-Binary creators included.

It doesn’t help that people in this field are freelancers. This means they don’t have to be provided healthcare by the companies they’re freelancing for. Women freelancers with extensive resumes are often overlooked for males with half of their experience leading women to pursue different revenue streams in addition to their comic art. The harassment is another factor which alienates women from keeping a career in comics. Women in the industry have been harassed out of jobs by their peers and by “fans” of those comics determined to keep the industry from evolving. There are noted examples of this happening in major comic companies. There have even been allegations of sexual abuse by men of power in the industry.

Ms. Marvel writer Willow Wilson previously spoke about how hard it was for women to gain professional experience. She said there was a “casting couch” atmosphere to navigating the industry if you were a woman, while men had a very different experience. Men were submitted to the regular trials of networking, knowing the right people and having an ounce of talent.

Historically women with big roles have even been blocked out from conversations in and about the industry. Marie Severin, for example, played a vital part in shaping Marvel Comics into what it is today and still felt left out of conversations while in meetings with men. She acknowledged the “boys club” exists, even in this trade. Marie started out her career as a colorist for EC Comics where it was said by her male peers that she kept the sexualization of female characters from going too far. While there, she was known for using one color on a page, a technique used to put emphasis on the action in a scene that is still used today.

The first documented piece of published sequential art was done by Rose O’Neil in 1896. It was added to a book done by cartoonist Trina Robbins, a notable founder of the underground comic scene who made it her mission to uncover buried women cartoonists. While men were away during WWII women were able to work as comic artists, writing adventure and romance comics only to be replaced by men as they returned home from the war. This erased the legacy that so many women had built for themselves and in some, if not most, cases reduced them to housewives.  Trina Robbins was also openly critical of the sexualization of women in comic production. She’s noted for criticizing work done by Robert Crumbs, being one of few to comment on his choice to display sexual violence against women in a joking manner.

Bottom line, we need this representation in the comic and art world. When women are left out it leads to men being the voice in the room and the unrealistic portrayals of women in them. #VISIBLEWOMEN is encouraging all women to be seen in a space that celebrates and acknowledges their contributions to the art world. With the hashtag animators, 2D artists, concept artists, jewelry makers, and others have the potential to be scouted for their talent and to shape the future of art. This hashtag is part of a longer and deeper legacy for inclusion in the art world. Women make up just about half of comic fans and less than a quarter of women are employed by major comic companies today.

Gwendolyn Osborne QxA

Gwendolyn Osborne is multitalented actress, model, podcaster and mother, but her latest role is as an Amazon in “Woman Woman 1984.” She appears alongside Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig, Robin Wright, Pedro Pascal and Chris Pine in the film, which is showing in theaters and streaming exclusively on HBO Max. Here at 360 Magazine, we sat down with the star to talk about her experience on the set of WW84, women’s representation in Hollywood, and the entertainment industry during Covid.

1. What was it like working on the set during the filming of “Wonder Woman 1984”?

One of the most poignant, magnificent experiences of my life!

2. What is your favorite memory while filming WW84?

When we (elite competitive Amazons) all finally walked on to the gargantuan set in full costume, hair and makeup and saw each other, it was like magic! Let’s go!

3. WW84 is the sequel to the highest-grossing live-action film ever directed by a woman. How do you see women’s representation in Hollywood evolving in 2021?

The director, Patty Jenkins, is an original trail blazer. She is the Wonder Woman behind the camera in every way. She is the inspiration behind my podcast, “Tea With Gwen,” because watching her direct 2 massive film units, while being a mother, wife and friend who wants to make sure she says goodbye to her actors was one of those pivotal moments where you see women can do it ALL. I am a part of the millions of women that found one another and start uplifting and supporting one another’s businesses to keep it going. Knowing we can do this for each other is so fulfilling because we know we all get further that way.

4. Though the release was pushed back several times due to Covid, how did you interpret the reaction to WW84 once it was released?

It seems to have mixed reviews but I am so relieved it’s finally out because sheesh! Keeping a secret that long and that big is exhausting! I can finally tell people I’M AN AMAZON in WW1984!

5. As an actress, what is the biggest shift you’ve noticed in the entertainment industry due to Covid? How have you adapted to continue to create content?

I’ve noticed that the people who really love it have stayed dedicated. We have grown within our own communities by supporting one another through it. Staying in class at Shari Shaw Studios online has been so supportive and elevating in my talents.

6. How does your experience on the silver screen differ from working in TV? Which do you prefer, and why?

Honestly, I love both. Being a mother, TV is easier because it’s right here in LA, but I would be ready to book a film and fly any day. We work out what we need to work out.

7. Besides using your Lomolique Facial Oil, do you have any other tips for keeping skin youthful and glowing?

Yes, drink water and keep the sugar low ([which is] so hard because I love chocolate!) Wash makeup off your face, exfoliate twice a week and moisturize every night.

8. How do you make the time to incorporate wellness into your busy daily life?

I think [that] wellness is incorporated, just like brushing your teeth–there’s no negotiating whether to do it, it’s just fit in. Taking care of your mind and body and soul is imperative for beauty on the inside and outside, especially if you want health for longevity.

9. Do you have another other exciting projects coming up in 2021 that you can share?

My podcast “Tea with Gwen” is available on Spotify, Google and iTunes. Please subscribe , like and enjoy all of the wisdom from the successful entrepreneurs on there and just the share of womanhood in general. [And] Look out for me on Bridgerton! Just kidding but ya know, we have to manifest to make things happen, for real right?!
