25 years ago today, Sublime’s self-titled album was released after the untimely passing of lead singer Bradley Nowell, spawning timeless hits like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way.” The iconic album continues to connect with fans and live on a quarter-century after its initial release, as the music endures, and new generations discover Sublime. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, the band’s management Surfdog/DKM in conjunction with UMe have arranged several special releases and events, plus new merch with Live Nation and other partners to commemorate the milestone.

“Garden Grove” and “Pawn Shop” Official Music Videos: The official music video for fan favorite “Pawn Shop” will be released in the coming weeks and is animated in the style of psychedelic-surfer-punk-graffiti, inspired by late-night edgy animations with Sublime’s iconography morphing throughout. The “Garden Grove” video was shot as a “love letter” to the Long Beach lifestyle and was released earlier this year.

Travis Barker ProjectTravis Barker is currently in the studio producing covers, remixes and collaborating with artists of all genres to reimagine various Sublime songs from the iconic self-titled album.

“We’re not trying to write punk rock. We’re not trying to write reggae. We’re not trying to write ska,” Sublime‘s Bradley Nowell told KROQ in 1995. “We’re just trying to write a good song.” They did exactly that—time and time again. “What I Got,” “Santeria,” “Wrong Way,” and “Doin’ Time” remain innovative staples from the ’90s alternative boom. But they accomplished even more: In less than a decade within the national limelightthe laid-back Long Beach trio spawned an entire genre—fusing reggae grooves, punk grittiness, ska energy, back porch folk introspection, and hip-hop swagger. Decades after the tragic death of singer-songwriter Bradley Nowell, Sublime remain an institution: With over 18 million in album consumption in the U.S. according to MRC; and their merchandise, emblazoned with the iconic sun logo, dominates sales at retailers including Target, Urban Outfitters and Spencer Gifts. Most importantly, the music remains timeless—a rite of passage for misfit listeners who refuse to color within the lines of conventional genre.

About Sublime

Sublime, the Long Beach, CA, reggae-punk/alternative rock trio, was founded in 1988 by Eric Wilson, Bud Gaugh and Bradley Nowell. Their first self-produced album, 40oz. to Freedom, was released in 1992 via the band’s label Skunk Records. The success of that album and heavy radio exposure by Southern California’s KROQ (two years after its initial release) secured Sublime signing to MCA Records in time for the band’s 1994 sophomore album, Robbin’ the Hood, which revealed an experimental ethic more in keeping with cut-and-paste dub than the well-tuned rage of the Cali punk revival. The album performed well at college radio and set the stage for the breakout success of their self-titled third album. On May 25, 1996, however, lead vocalist and guitarist Nowell tragically passed away and the band collapsed, but the eponymous SUBLIME was still slated for a July 1996 release. On the strength of the chart-topping alternative radio hit “What I Got,” the album was certified gold by the end of 1996. “Santeria” and “Wrong Way” followed and enjoyed heavy airplay, and their self-titled album eventually sold more than seven million copies, making it one of the most popular reggae-punk albums in history. Such success spread to the band’s earlier albums too, leading 40oz. to Freedom to double-platinum sales and Robbin’ the Hood to gold certification. Sublime have gone on to sell millions of albums in the US, and their genre-defining music and their cultural influence is stronger today than ever before.

The 6th Clothing Co. QxA

The 6th Clothing Co. creates athleisure wear that inspires greatness and brings people together. On the 6th Clothing Co.’s website, the brand defines their mindset as such: “6th man” mentality: patience and sacrifice in the face of adversity, but always a belief in himself and what could be accomplished when it’s your time to shine.” The recent drop of the Summer of 6th Collection highlights this optimistic attitude. Pieces from the collection, such as the One Tribe Unisex Demin Jacket and the Summer ’21 Give More Tee are printed with positive messages to uplift and motivate customers to “Do More, Be More, and Give More Together.” To learn more about the 6th Clothing Co., visit their website. A portion of proceeds from all purchases will be donated to various non-profit organizations.

We spoke with founder/CEO Badi Tolo about the inspiration behind the 6th man mentality, nonprofits that the 6th Clothing Co. collaborates with, and exciting upcoming pop-up shop opportunities.

How do you define the clothing style of streetwear?

Unisex athleisure wear for all ages.

What nonprofits does the 6th Clothing CO. work with?

Currently, I’m spotlighting two great nonprofits, A Little Help (support elderly citizens by connecting neighbors) and Colorado Skateboarding Society (trying to get funding and support to build a top-of-the-line skate facility in Colorado where everyone is welcome). I’ve worked with close to 15 various non-profits though over a span of just over 2 years (one of which included a pandemic, haha) and all my products that aren’t specific to those nonprofits automatically contribute 6% of proceeds to various select nonprofits with every order. Long story short–the spotlight periods are focused on one or two [charities] at a time, but I want to continue to support as many causes and organizations as I can over time, with the resources I have available. I believe [that] helping out those who help those beyond my reach is having an impact [that] I (and my customers) can’t measure, but it’s one the world needs.

On your website’s About section, you mention sacrifice in the face of adversity. Did you come up with the “6th Man” mentality? If not, where does this idea come from?

As far as I know, I came up with it haha. I think generally a 6th man on a bench has a mentality that drives him/her, but I guess I just decided to define it as the core of my brand because I played ball when I was younger and [it] just kind of fit the career and passions I’ve had professionally. When I played, I started but I never viewed myself as someone who was just given anything. So, I always tried to leave it out there and play with that chip on my shoulder, like a 6th man would.

It was something I defined a little later in life as my “6th Man Mentality”. I think I honed-in on that message most coming out of high school when I reflected on regretting not giving basketball another shot after I was cut from my sophomore team and diagnosed with lymphoma cancer shorty after. That was pretty traumatic for me as a 15–16-year-old kid. I just kind of moved on through the rest of my high school life without revisiting the game I loved so much before the cancer thing. Going into college, I knew that I had sort of quit on something that I loved doing because of the cancer, because of the fear, because of pride. I knew I had more to give than that, so I decided going into college I would do everything I loved and could and go hard with it. I got more into music, I played new sports. I played gym ball for hours a day multiple times a week for basically 5 years. I became pretty decent and just had fun playing again while going through college. I was just grateful for the opportunity again, and I would give it everything I could–whether it was gym ball, city league hoops, music, school, family, work. That’s what the 6th man/woman does. They sacrifice for the team, but they know what they [need to do to] bring and relish those opportunities. That approach has driven me throughout life and lead to many more opportunities, personally and professionally, that I’m grateful for.

What is your favorite piece of apparel you have ever produced?

The first tee I ever did. [The] logo was huge right across the front of the chest and it says, “One Tribe” (which is my slogan/tagline) in a script font. I got a small run of tees printed and was just excited. [It] felt like that vision to have a brand where I could spread that [6th Man] mentality was finally here and real. I gave one to my mom, [and] kept one for myself. Funny story–I actually had a friend who [went] to a Meet and Greet with Mike Shinoda, at a concert of his we went to back in 2018. My buddy did me a solid and gave him one of my shirts, which I was super hype on because I was a big fan back in the day. [The] Linkin Park/Jay-Z collab was on repeat back then! Anyways, [I] always hoped I’d see a photo of him randomly wearing it someday haha, but it was just cool that he accepted it and signed a card my buddy gave to me. I don’t even think I have it up on my store anymore, but I might have to bring it back!

How would you describe the look of the “Summer of 6th ’21 Collection”?

[The] Summer of 6th look is just rolling with the current trend of tie dye prints. I wanted a little pop of color, which I’m trying to do a little more of with my brand. So, [I] got pink, sky blue, and black mixed with white tie die all over [the] print products. [Staying] true to the brand, I have to keep that message going, so a couple [pieces] say “DO MORE, BE MORE, GIVE MORE.” I’ll be adding a couple pieces to match (bathing suit, women’s dress and some youth options) probably in late June. There’s a little something for everyone, so get it while it’s hot! Everybody’s rockin’ the tie dye right now. Might as well give back and make a difference automatically while you’re shopping for it.

Do you have a favorite piece from the “Summer of 6th ’21 Collection?

The Diamond Mentality Tee. [It] has my logo masked out in tie die with a diamond shape around it, and the word “mentality” across the front. Simple and to the point. That’s what it’s all about for me. That’s how I built this brand, how I’m building my life and career. It’s always about your mentality through the ups and downs. Sometimes you need a reminder, so why not say it with your chest? It’s there for you and for anyone who can draw a little fire and inspiration from it.

Can you tell us about any exciting, upcoming artists who are to be featured within The Drop Collection?

I do have a collab in the works that will speak to the Stop Asian Hate movement, so I will hopefully be dropping a tee for that in July. I have a sponsor [who is working] on that tee who is based in the Bay area. Th[ey] do a lot for youth in the Asian community there. A percentage of sales proceeds will go directly back to them to support their efforts in the community and spread the word.

Aside from that, I’ll continue to feature a friend, Curt Fulsty of C Fulsty Books as one of my current featured artists. He illustrates children’s books about difficult issues that sometimes adults tend to gloss over or avoid. I think that’s important in today’s world, so I was happy to collab with him.

I’d love to work with a music artist for sure as I’ve always just been a big music fan. My first Drop Collection collab was with an artist/radio personality out of LA, named Jackie Hollywood. We did some lyric merch from a music video when it dropped, so I want to do more of that. The 6th is a new brand on the scene, so really I’m just hustling to try and get the name out, make a few sales, and support these nonprofits. So, I’m open to opportunities or people of interest that like the vibe and want to make something happen.

What is to come from the 6th Clothing Co. in the rest of 2021?

Some new merch for sure. With my current nonprofit spotlight, I’ll be doing a little popup at an event later this month where there will be a bunch of skate brands and other partners there to support their mission of building a skate facility here in Colorado. So, that’s exciting to be a part of that. I’ve got a couple more nonprofit spotlights lined up, so [I] will be working behind the scenes on that. Aside from that, sky is the limit. I always say, “Wherever I’m at in life with my brand, with my mission–I’m just getting started.” It’s all about mentality so who knows what the future holds, but I’m excited about it.

In 2020, Twenty One Pilots surprised fans with standalone singles “Level of Concern“ and “Christmas Saves The Year.” ”Level of Concern” reigned at Alternative Radio for 12 weeks straight and cracked the Top 25 on Billboard’s “Hot 100”chart, while also achieving RIAA Gold certification, and propelling the band to victory at last year’s American Music Awards where they took home the award for “Favorite Artist – Alternative Rock.” ”Christmas Saves The Year” arrived at the tail end of 2020 and debuted on Billboard’s “Alternative Airplay” chart, becoming the first holiday-themed song to make the list since 2012.

Twenty One Pilots’ 2018 LP Trench ushered in a new era for the duo from Ohio Earning Platinum certification from the RIAA, the album was met with critical acclaim with Billboard declaring, “Trench revels in the confounding genre-blurring and cavernous conceptualism that has defined Twenty One Pilots.” A true global phenomenon having surpassed two billion streams worldwide, Trench is highlighted by the RIAA Gold and Platinum certified alternative hits “The Hype,”“Chlorine,”and “Jumpsuit.” “Jumpsuit” stands as the decade’s fastest rising song to reach #1 on Billboard’s “Alternative Songs”chart and earned the duo their fourth GRAMMY nomination (Best Rock Song). About Trippie Redd:

Since delivering his debut mixtape A Love Letter to You in 2017, multi-platinum-selling, chart-topping rapper/singer/songwriter Trippie Redd has continually defied genre boundaries, embedding his melodic take on rap with frenetic elements of rock-and-roll and heavy metal. A self-professed workaholic, Trippie has now debuted five consecutive projects in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 chart.

Born Michael Lamar White IV and raised in Canton, Ohio, he grew up on hip-hop icons like Tupac Shakur, Nas, and Jay-Z, but later became fascinated with the shock-rock of Slipknot and Rob Zombie. As he recalls, the urge to create his own music arose soon after his older brother (an aspiring rapper who went by the name Dirty Redd) died in a car accident when Trippie was 10. “I took his dream and did it myself,” Trippie says now. Drawing much of his inspiration from the free-flowing style and inventive lyricism of Lil Wayne, Trippie began recording in his cousin’s basement and later relocated to Atlanta to further hone his skills, quickly landing a record deal with 10K Projects.

Though 2020 brought its fair share of adjustments for the rapper with the arrival of COVID-19, Trippie used his time in quarantine to make some of his boldest career moves yet. He made his Hollywood acting debut in a cameo during an episode of Lil Dicky’s critically acclaimed DAVE. He also dropped his highly anticipated album, Pegasus, on Halloween. The mythical LP, which debuted at #2, included the intoxicating “Excitement” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR and showed Trippie bridging the generational gap with the legendary Busta Rhymes on “I Got You.” The deluxe version of Pegasus comes in the form of NEON SHARK, a collaboration album with production from Travis Barker.

Earlier this week, Trippie made a guest appearance on Dixie D’Amelio’s The Early Late Show, the YouTube talk-show series from the young TikTok star, featuring a guest appearance from her sister, Charli D’Amelio.

To celebrate the release of Pegasus, Trippie will be hosting a series of socially distanced, drive-in movie screenings in Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York City on the evening of the project’s release. Each location will be showing Candyman (1992), one of the artist’s favorite Halloween films, and there will be exclusive merch available for purchase. While release parties have been put on hold due to COVID-19, Trippie wanted to find a unique way to connect and celebrate with his fans for the drop of his long-awaited LP, Pegasus. “I really just miss seeing my fans,” Trippie said, “I figured these events would be a good way to celebrate Pegasus with them.”

Trippie will be stopping by the Miami screening to introduce the event and show his appreciate to his fans from a safe distance. The Miami screening will also feature a special double feature of Candyman (1992) followed by Jeepers Creepers (2001). See below for locations and times.

His first full-length project since his Billboard #1 album A Love Letter To You 4, Pegasus is an ambitious 26-track project, featuring previously released singles like “Excitement” with PARTYNEXTDOOR and “I Got You” with Busta Rhymes. The album also includes features from Lil Wayne, Young Thug, Future, Quavo and more.

Apple Announces Sep. 15 Apple Event

Apple announced Tuesday that they will be hosting an event on Wednesday September 15 at 10 am PDT.  The ‘Time Flies’ event will take place virtually from Apple Park, the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, CA. It is speculated that the iPhone 12 and Apple Watch Series 6 will be revealed at the event next week. According to AppleInsider, there is also word of a possible new iPad or Apple Silicon MacBook.

While some expect the new iPhone to be revealed next week, others say that the announcement will come a few weeks later, due to delays caused by COVID-19. According to The Verge, There will be four iPhone 12 models released this year: two iPhone 12’s that will be sold at a lower price point, and two iPhone Pro’s. These will include a 6.7-inch iPhone Pro, making it the largest iPhone to date. CNET reports that the new model will be the first iPhone to run on 5G. The new Apple Watch will allegedly feature added monitoring blood oxygen levels, updated sleep tracking, and a faster processor.

Selena Gomez launches Rare Beauty, Broken Hearts Gallery to Hit Theaters Friday

This week has been very eventful for artist Selena Gomez. On Thursday Sep. 3, she launched her makeup line Rare Beauty, which shares the same name as her most recent album that was released early this year. The line includes 20 makeup products and accessories, available in a variety of shades and colors. Items can be purchased on the Rare Beauty website, as well as online and in stores at Sephora.

Along with the makeup line, Rare Beauty also established the Rare Impact Fund to support the mental health of the brand’s community, employees and partners. One percent of all sales and funds from partners will go toward increasing access to mental health resources. The brand shared their mission via Instagram “to shape conversations around beauty, self-acceptance, and mental health.”

Broken Hearts Gallery, a film executive produced by Gomez, will be released in theaters on Friday Sep. 10. The movie features actors Dacre Montgomery of “Stranger Things” and Geraldine Viswanathan of “Blockers” (2018) and “Hala” (2019) as the two leads. Gomez took to Instagram on Monday to share a special trailer of the film and encourage those who see it in movie theaters to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.

These projects come just weeks after the release of Gomez’s collaboration with Blackpink, the virtual premiere of This Is The Year— a film she produced alongside former Disney Channel co-star David Henrie, who directed the film— and the release of her HBO Max show “Selena + Chef.”

McDonald’s x Cactus Jack Collab

McDonald’s launched its collaboration with Travis Scott on Tuesday. The fast food chain has added the “Cactus Jack” meal to their menu for $6. The meal does not come with a Happy Meal toy, but does include a Quarter Pounder with cheese, bacon and lettuce, medium fries with BBQ dipping sauce and a medium Sprite with extra ice— Scott’s go-to order. McDonald’s employees will be sporting new uniforms for the partnership, and the restaurant and rapper have also released merchandise to mark the event. The items are sold on Scott’s website and include t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, sweatpants and other accessories and household items containing his name and the restaurant logo.

Travis Scott visited a McDonald’s location in Downey City, CA to celebrate the launch, causing chaos amongst the large crowd, as seen in videos fans posted on Twitter. Scott went live on Instagram to share the experience with his followers. On Wednesday, Scott served customers the meal from the drive-thru window at a McDonald’s in Texas, as seen in a video posted by the TikTok account RAP. As part of the month-long collab, the artist and fast food chain will be exploring ways to support different charities and organizations. The partnership will run until Oct. 4. This is Mcdonald’s first collaboration with a big celebrity since they featured a Michael Jordan-themed meal on their menu in 1992.
