Wine Tasting Basics

Planning on doing some wine tasting? Here’s a quick beginner’s guide to
get you started on your adventure.

Look: Look at the wine that was poured.

It should have an appealing look to it. Tilt the glass to the side and look closely at the edge of the wine. It’s the best place to see what’s going on. Is it vibrant looking? Great, younger wines should be. Is it Brownish? Not so great, wine may be questionable.

Note: LEGS DON’T MATTER.

The “Legs” are just evaporated
alcohol binding with the wine you’ve swirled in your glass. This is wine, not that hottie from the gym.

Smell: Smell the wine.

Give it a good swirl and don’t be embarrassed to stick your nose in the glass. Your mouth should be slightly open to allow the aroma to pass fully across your olfactory sensors. Does the wine smell pleasant? Don’t smell White Raspberries, wet chalk, ground cumin and freshly ground coffee? That’s ok, it takes practice. Just decide if you like
the smell.

To Spit or Not to Spit:

Out tasting at 5 places with your friends before lunch? Well, maybe you should learn to spit. Spitting out the taste is considered quite polite at wineries when wine tasting. Most places even have disposable cups hidden away behind the bar just for your personal convenience (splashing happens when using the communal dump). Spitting allows you to maintain your composure and palate for longer. You’ll even look way more sophisticated in the eyes of the winery staff. If the goal of your adventure is to take a limo and get hammered for that special occasion, don’t spit, but also don’t be too upset when the staff at your 4th or more stop looks annoyed and unhappy to be serving you.

Overall: At the end of the tasting all that really matters is… did YOU like the wine.

Unless you’re buying the bottle for the person standing next to you, their opinion doesn’t really matter. Wine is a very personal experience. If you liked the wine, how much? Do you love it enough to buy a case? Just enough to buy a bottle? Or just liked it barely enough to suffer through putting it in your mouth? Whichever answer you give, that’s ok, the whole point is to experience something new.

Besides offering some of the best wines, Oenophiles are given the opportunity to experience the true terroir of the unique places where wines are grown, harvested, and transformed into magic in a bottle. With countless estates and tasting rooms to visit, the folks at Vintage Wine Estates have assembled the ultimate visitor’s guide to Wine Country featuring some of the most popular wineries throughout Napa, Sonoma, and the Central Coast:

Napa Valley

Napa may be the most visited area of California wine country and is home to some truly exceptional estates. Why not start at the less-traveled northernmost top of Napa Valley in Calistoga, known for its hot springs, mineral pools, and destination winery Clos Pegase. Renowned for its award-winning Michael Graves architecture, the estate boasts 20,000 square feet of caves and is situated beneath a volcanic knoll. The property features a stunning, drought-resistant gardenand a long-time commitment to estate-grown Napa Valley wines, Clos Pegase has a forty-year winegrowing heritage, producing Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Girard Winery, located just across the lane from Clos Pegase, has been making exclusive and small-lot high quality Bordeaux varietal wines since 1975. Not long ago, Girard completed a stunning new winery featuring a state-of-the-art production facility and cellar. Most people elect to enjoy their wine and the perfect weather on the expansive veranda overlooking the estate vineyards.

But it doesn’t end there—peaceful Sonoma Valley is just west over the mountains.

Sonoma

Located between the Mayacamas range which separates Napa from Sonoma and Sonoma Mountain to the west is Sonoma Valley. Here, the stop is B.R. Cohn Winery, founded by Bruce Cohn, long time manager of The Doobie Brothers in 1994. A direct reflection of the quality of its vineyards, the wines include standout Olive Hill Estate, named for the nearly five hundred 160-year-old olive trees on the estate.

Up the road from B.R. Cohn is the century-old, five-generation, 1850-acre Kunde Family Winery, known for its acclaimed iron-rich, ancient red volcanic soils. Kunde is family-owned and operated with a hands-on team of 4th and 5th generation family members who remain committed to innovation while maintaining a deep, personal commitment to certified sustainable winegrowing and preserving the land for future generations. The mountaintop tasting high above the valley floor is the ideal place to sip wine and gaze out over the unforgettable vista.

Featuring a Tuscan-inspired tasting room and marketplace, the best stop to find you very own “house red” is Viansa Winery, which crafts wines to be enjoyed every day. Viansa is located at the southern entrance to Sonoma Valley and perched high above the wetlands of San Francisco Bay. Guests can taste wine and experience the view from one of the cozy outlooks or enjoy wood-oven pizza or a snack from the marketplace.

Central Coast

Heading south along the dramatic California Coast is the beach town of Arroyo Grande. It’s also a wine region overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Here the grand dame is Laetitia Vineyard & Winery. Founded by an established French Champagne house known for mėthode champenoise sparkling wines, the winery also produces still wines made from the traditional Champagne varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Laetitia is proud to be a SIP Certified Winery (Sustainability in Practice). A favorite site in the vineyards are herds of sheep and goats who keep the weeds down naturally.

HALL, WALT & BACA WINES LAUNCH SEASON TWO OF ITS CELEBRITY HAPPY HOUR SERIES

HALL, WALT and BACA Wines, a set of three, family-owned wineries located in Napa and Sonoma Counties, have announced the launch of season two of their celebrity Happy Hour series returning in August, 2021. The weekly series rotates airing on three different social media platforms including Instagram and Facebook Live weekly on one of the respective brand channels. The Happy Hour series premiered on April 2, 2020, with 150 shows produced through the July 2021.

“During the start of the pandemic in the Spring of 2020, we looked at different creative ways to keep our audiences engaged and keep wine conversations top of mind,” says Vintner Jennifer Brown. “Launching Season one of the series and really honing in on the lifestyle of wine with each of our guests allowed us to connect in new and compelling ways –our Club Members and fans sipped along with our show hosts and the guest, and it truly felt like we are all enjoying a casual Happy Hour experience together. Season two will continue to focus on producing dynamic and engaging shows that let our audience into our guest’s lives, ask questions in real time, and hear about new projects that each is working on.”

Created by Vintner Kathryn Walt Hall and produced in-house, Happy Hour gives viewers an unscripted, behind the scenes peek into the lives of celebrities, artists, athletes, comedians, Broadway stars, authors, magicians, and more. MEET THE HOST:  Kathryn Walt Hall

Kathryn Walt Hall is the owner of HALL Family Wines and has been involved in the  California wine industry since her family first purchased vineyards in the 1970’s. She has had a  distinguished career as a successful businesswoman, attorney, community activist, and as the  United States Ambassador to Austria, appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1997. A mother of  two, Kathryn is fluent in French and German, earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of  California, Berkeley, a joint MBA from UC California, Berkeley & Columbia University and a  J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law.  

MEET THE HOST:  Jeff Zappelli 

After eight years managing restaurants including three years at San Francisco-based Morton’s  Steakhouse, Jeff joined HALL Wines in 2006 to establish its Club Membership program which  has become one of the most successful Direct to Consumer efforts in the Napa Valley. In 2016,  Zappelli was appointed General Manager of WALT Wines, making him responsible for the day-to-day operations and strategic planning for the Sonoma-based brand. Zappelli is an active  speaker throughout the Bay Area, participating in conversations and panels related to direct-to-consumer trends, wine industry technology, sales as a science, CRM and direct marketing. An  avid sports fan and father of three, Jeff was born in Seattle, WA and attended the University of  California at Santa Barbara earning a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology. 

MEET THE HOST: Jennifer Brown

The daughter of Vintner Kathryn Hall, Jennifer Brown spearheads HALL Family Wines newest  brand, BACA, meaning “berry” in Latin, a modern Zinfandel wine brand. Jennifer spearheads  brand development, marketing strategies, and operational plans, as well as wholesale channels.  Prior to working at HALL Family Wines, Jennifer was the founder of Omghow / Girl Karma  Inc., a social platform and positive destination for teen girls. Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Arts  degree at Northwestern University and both a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration and a  Law Degree from Stanford University. Fluent in German and a mother of two, Jennifer is an avid  hiking and yoga enthusiast and incorporates wellness and clean living as a core part of her daily  routine.

Sustainable Practices In Downtown Napa

Downtown Napa is home to more than 40 tasting rooms, 80 eateries, 60 boutiques and shops and a variety of lively art displays all within walking distance of one another. Aside from convenience, Downtown Napa also gives travelers an opportunity to minimize their carbon footprint. Here are some ways local hospitality businesses offer sustainable practices for visitors.

Car-Free Travel:

Not only is Downtown Napa wine country’s most walkable destination, but visitors don’t even need a car to get here in the first place – an ideal way to reduce overall environmental impact. The Napa Valley Wine Train offers a car-free San Francisco Bay Area connection with the San Francisco Bay Ferry, so travelers can hop on, sit back and enjoy a traffic-free scenic ride to the train station in Downtown Napa.

Attractions and Lodging:

To eliminate plastic water bottles, Andaz Napa provides guests with reusable, BPA-free aluminum PathWater bottles that can be refilled at the property’s filtered water stations. The hotel also continues to focus on purchasing local and sustainable products for its food and beverage offerings. Additionally, the housekeeping staff is always on a mission to turn off electric devices in each unattended guest room.

Archer Hotel Napa provides access to local and regional wines and produce through its in-house sustainable food guidelines. The hotel follows low water consumption measures, recycling and reusing practices, utilizing an eco-friendly dry-cleaning service and more. The property also has an ongoing partnership with One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization with a focus on global reforestation, and Proud Source Water, a Certified B Corporation spring water provider.

As the first Northern California bed-and-breakfast to be certified by the California Green Lodging Program, The Inn on First uses low-flow water sources, composts kitchen and garden waste, provides stainless steel water bottles and reusable glassware for guests. To reduce packaging and shipping, all food is also made from scratch. Each room features a personal air conditioning unit with an occupancy sensor, thermostat-controlled heat source and ceiling fans, among other eco-friendly amenities.

Napa River Inn located within the Historic Napa Mill is the original green building in town, which opted to build upon its historic roots keeping the original structure intact. Additionally, the bricks that make up much of the building were formed with clay from the Napa River. Embracing an eco-friendly way of life, Napa River Inn also sources bath amenities locally, recycles cooking oil into bio-diesel and offers charging pumps for electric vehicles on-site.

The Westin Verasa Napa is part of the California Green Business network and features oxidizers in rooms, low flow showerheads, composting, food dehydrating practices and sustainable purchasing. They’ve also eliminated plastic straws and implemented bio-fuel recycling, repurposing of linens, LED high-efficiency lighting, recycling training and more.

Recently revealed Napa Valley Welcome Center at First Street Napa features lights operated on timers, a water-saving toilet and sinks. All information provided to tourists is now fully digital. Additionally, the mercantile shop makes an effort to source local, handmade items. 

Food and Drink:

Angèle Restaurant & Bar attempts to only use local purveyors and farms to create its delicious French dishes. To eliminate plastics, the restaurant switched to paper and corn straws, as well as wooden or corn silverware. Additionally, the restaurant composts all food and paper waste.

The Dutch Door is a zero-plastic takeout cafe, dedicated to compostable containers, flatware and cups. The Dutch Door strives for zero food waste, choosing to sell out of items daily instead of discarding them. About half of the cafe’s menu is vegan, and they also order local produce and source meat from no-feed farms.

Gran Eléctrica utilizes bio-fuel recycling and partners with Napa Valley Recycling to properly compartmentalize all waste for maximum sustainability. The restaurant only uses recycled items including paper straws, paper hand towels, to-go containers and printed menus, all of which are fully compostable. Whenever possible, Gran Eléctrica only sources food items from local farms. The restaurant also grows peppers, squash, cilantro, mint, edible flowers and various herbs on-site to reduce the need to purchase additional produce. Additionally, staff is trained to never waste food, but instead tasked with pickling and dehydrating certain items. The owners also encourage their employees to carpool or bike to work.

Monday Bakery serves its treats and drinks in compostable packaging and also offers compost, recycle and garbage bins within the shop for customer use. The company was awarded the JD Fullner Recycling Leadership Award in 2019 by the City of Napa.

Oenotri maintains a 5-acre culinary garden just a few miles from the restaurant where 80 percent of the menu is sourced during peak season. In addition to fresh produce, Oenotri serves more than 20 types of house-made salami, daily house-made bread, an array of handmade fresh and dry pasta and olive oil sourced exclusively from Napa Valley.

Oxbow Public Market and its merchants use compostable containers and food ware. The market employs an industry-leading recycling program which has received special recognition from local, state and U.S. governments for outstanding green business practices through its recycling efforts.

Stone Brewing Napa donates its brewery wastewater to the Napa Sanitation District wastewater system. The brewery’s spent grain and hops also go to a local farmer in the region to feed the cattle. Stone Brewing is another City of Napa JD Fullner Recycling Leadership Award recipient.

Retail:

Betty’s Girl Napa has been a green business since its launch in 2003 and offers 100 percent upcycled fashion, such as dresses made from vintage and recycled fabrics.

Napa Running Company is committed to keeping fitness environmentally friendly by offering green products such as Hydro Flask water bottles as well as recycled shoe packaging. Recently, the store introduced a new eco-friendly brand, Girlfriend Collective, whose products are made from recycled polyester and post-consumer recycled water bottles.

California

  • Presidio “My Park Moment” Photo Contest: The Presidio in San Francisco has launched “My Park Moment” photo contest, where the public can submit a photo of their favorite park memory through May 28—a family picnic, a camping trip, their last hike in the Presidio or anything else they love to do in their favorite park. This fall, approximately 400 photos will be selected for a free and family-friendly outdoor photo show at the future home of the Presidio Tunnel Tops. Debuting in spring 2022, the Presidio Tunnel Tops project, comprising 14 acres of new national park land—will be an iconic “must see” San Francisco destination. 
  • LACMA Partners with Snapchat: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Snapchat recently debuted the “Monumental Perspectives” experience, which brings together artists and technologists to create virtual monuments that explore some of the histories of local communities in an effort to highlight perspectives from across the region. Visitors can experience the augmented reality monuments online or at site-specific locations across Los Angeles including LACMA’s Wilshire Boulevard campus, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and more. 
  • Napa Wrap Art and Art Walk: Napa Wrap Art is a new outdoor public art project debuting this spring, featuring transformed utility boxes into works of art around Downtown Napa. Thirteen regional artists were selected to create diverse designs that provide an opportunity to turn ordinary objects into something special that both locals and visitors can enjoy. Later this summer, Downtown Napa will welcome a new rotation of the Napa Art Walk sculptures – a true outdoor treasure hunt for art that is a perfect activity for kids of all ages. 
  • Desert X: The third installment of the internationally acclaimed biennial desert art exhibition returned in 2021 through May 16. The 2021 Desert X artist lineup includes a diverse group of 13 artists ranging from locals like Kim Stringfellow to international representatives like Zahrah Alghamdi. Visitors can explore new outdoor art installations across the desert region for an exciting socially distant experience.

  • San Antonio’s McNay Art Museum just opened Limitless! Five Women Reshape Contemporary Art, which includes an ever-popular infinity mirror room installation. San Antonio Museum of Art opened No Ocean Between Us, featuring art from Latin American artists of Asian descent, while the Briscoe Western Art Museum will open Still in the Saddle: A New History of the Hollywood Western in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
  • Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts completes a decade-long campus redevelopment project. Opened to the public in late 2020, the building finishes a trio of spaces that make up one of the largest art museums in the country. On the first floor is a black-box gallery dedicated to immersive installations. Second-floor galleries highlight photography, decorative arts, prints and drawings, and the top floor features thematic exhibitions on art from the 1960s onward. Additionally, the space features a 215-seat theater and a fine dining restaurant. 
  • The Dallas Museum of Art recently unveiled Cubism in Color: The Still Lifes of Juan Gris, the first US exhibition in over 35 years dedicated to the Spanish artist Juan Gris, this exhibition reconsiders the legacy of this important yet underappreciated modernist master. Co-organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art, Cubism in Color: The Still Lifes of Juan Gris highlights the artist’s pioneering and revolutionary contributions to the Cubist movement by focusing on his fascination with subjects drawn from everyday life.

Rapid City, South Dakota

  • “Legends in Light” Laser Show at Crazy Horse Memorial – Beginning Memorial Day weekend and occurring nightly through Labor Day, the “Legends in Light” laser show at Crazy Horse Memorial turns the carved mountainside into a 500-foot remarkable display. Each night at 9:30 p.m., viewers can take in the story and rich heritage of Native Americans.The show presents colorful animations and features music with choreographed lasers and sound effects.  
  • Gift From Mother Earth Art Show – Every June, Crazy Horse Memorial hosts The Gift From Mother Earth Art Show – an exhibition that celebrates a blend of arts and crafts that represent Native American cultures and the New West. From Friday June 18th – Sunday June 20th, artists of custom-made clothing, jewelry and other similar items will showcase their pieces starting at 8 a.m. each day. 
  • Native POP: People of the Plains – Featuring original Native work by established and emerging Native American Artists, Native POP is a one-day fine art show located in Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City. This cultural celebration will take place on Tuesday, July 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 8 pm. and will feature Native culture bearers sharing their Native knowledge and artistry. Visitors to Rapid City can also experience Native American art, culture and history at Prairie Edge or Journey Museum and open-air murals painted by local artists at Art Alley throughout the summer. 

St. Pete/Clearwater, Florida

From museums devoted to big-name artists to incredible street murals adorning the buildings around St. Pete’s Central Avenue, art—and the cultures it celebrates—is all around in St. Pete/Clearwater. Spring/Summer 2021 is an exciting season for St. Pete art, with new exhibitions, venues, and events to explore. 

  • From Margins to Mainstays at Museum of Fine Arts St. Pete – This exhibition, on display April 24 – September 26, features masterworks from MFA’s photography collection that were made by artists whose careers and personal lives were sidelined, ignored, or impacted by their gender, race, sexuality, or nationality. From Margins to Mainstays illustrates how the canon of photography has changed since the medium first began being shown in museums in the 1940s, with particular emphasis on rectifying the small percentage of women and artists of color historically acquired by and displayed in public collections. The exhibition includes works by Berenice Abbott, Lotte Jacobi, Carrie Mae Weems, Lee Miller, Cornelius Marion Battey, James Van Der Zee, and Manuel Álvarez Bravo.
  • Fairgrounds St. Pete at The Factory – Art enthusiasts will fall in love with The Factory, an 8-warehouse St. Pete arts center spread over 6.5 acres in the heart of the Warehouse Arts District. Fairgrounds St. Pete, opening Spring 2021 at The Factory, is a 15,000 square foot artist-made environment. Fairgrounds functions as an immersive, choose-your-own-adventure experience where visitors are invited to explore a world of playful art and technology exhibits that highlight weird, wacky, and wonderful Florida. The inaugural installation gives 60+ local and nationally recognized artists a platform to showcase their work and experiment with the unexpected. Fairgrounds aims to compensate artists fairly for their contributions by paying not only for their work, but also a portion of the profits from ticket sales while their work is on view. Through exhibits, events, workshops, and creative education programs, Fairgrounds will be a leader for arts innovation and an economic engine for local artists and craftspeople.

Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa

Kicking off in May, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa has partnered with local artists and galleries to create the “Art in the Garden” exhibit. The gallery spread out across the property’s 10 acres of gardens will be open to both guests and the local community, free of charge, and Estancia will be providing a guided art brochure that showcases the various pieces and maps them out across the property. Art pieces including murals, statues and galleries have been created and provided by locals including Channin Fulton, Stefanie Bales, Billy Pease, Thomas J. Galleries and more.

New Orleans – The National WWII Museum

The National WWII Museum’s newest special exhibit “SOLDIER | ARTIST: Trench Art in World War II” explores the unique military pastime of creating art, souvenirs and tools out of the discarded materials and waste of war. Featuring more than 150 artifacts, many of which have never been exhibited, the collection also includes a background on the creators, providing a rare glimpse into the circumstances of war and the ingenuity and resourcefulness of servicemembers in the field. Such items range from souvenirs, such as ashtrays and jewelry made by servicemembers for their loved ones at home, to forbidden items like radios and musical instruments made by prisoners of war. The exhibition will be open to the public through January 2, 2022.

Daxton Hotel – Birmingham, Michigan

Daxton Hotel has opened its doors in the affluent community of Birmingham, a city 30 minutes north of Detroit. The hotel features a minimalist-luxe design with more than 400 original pieces of cutting-edge art curated from around the world by renowned  Saatchi Art. The incredible collection of mixed media brings whimsical and energetic flair throughout as vibrant colors flood spaces throughout the hotel, featuring a chartreuse lobby, deep-burgundy guest rooms and lavender parlors, an ideal composition juxtaposed with the art collection, avant-garde architectural lighting and furniture in bold shapes. Daxton Hotel brings a blend of provocative yet sophisticated style, offering artistic freedom of expression throughout the use of light rays, shadows and reflections creating an ethereal mood. The hotel offers a Beauty + Bubbles event, where visitors get an intimate tour of the public art collection curated by Saatchi Art on the first Friday of every month. The tour features work from 160 artists representing nearly 40 countries. The artwork crosses multiple mediums including painting, photography, collage, drawing and sculpture of some of the best international, national and regional artists.

The MC Hotel – Montclair, NJ

Located just 45 minutes outside of NYC, the 159 room MC Hotel is at the intersection of culture and community in the heart of Montclair’s thriving artistic community. With art curated from established and up-and-coming artists in every room, the hotel is part art gallery, part meeting place. Currently on display are pieces from painters Ryan Chin and Siona Benjamin-Kruge as well as mixed-media artist Basia Goszczynska to name a few. At guest check-in travelers will be met by a sculpture of a flower from Karen Kimmel that stretches across two walls. The sculpture features textiles that were meticulously hand-punched then painted onsite. On the lobby wall of the bar guests will see a sculpture from Goszczynska which is made from salvaged oyster farming bags, marine rope and steel wire. He also continues this unique interpretation of upcycling to shelves of the bar which displays Rainbow Collections, a piece featuring crowdsourced microplastics and salvaged baby food jars.

Crossroads Hotel – Kansas City, MO

With 2,000 square foot dedicated to public art, local artists and artists with historic ties to Kansas City, Crossroads is not just community-driven but art-driven. The gallery program is a thoughtful effort to reflect and contribute to the surrounding art district. Exhibitions, artist commissions, performances and unexpected artist-driven experiences intimately connect visitors to the creative scene thriving in the area. Along with the public gallery and local creative contributions to the interiors, amenities and delicacies, Crossroads is thrilled to support an artist in residence program. Curated by Hesse McGraw (director at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston) and Kansas City’s el dorado inc., the hotel’s architecture firm, the program provides another meaningful way for Crossroads to contribute to and support the artistic, social and cultural flourishing happening in the city. Current artist in residence Nick Miller is showcasing Wild Stallion, is a sculptural installation representing unseen and unstoppable algorithmic forces of technological innovation done with duct tape. Previous exhibits have come from Peggy Noland whose car makeovers are nothing short legendary and Glyneisha Johnson whose Watering Place paidhomage to the plants as a source of refuge for Black, Brown and Indigenous people.

Hewing HotelMinneapolis, MN

Since opening its doors in 2016 the 124-room luxury lifestyle Hewing Hotel has provided an unmistakable all-Minnesotan experience in the bustling North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis. The former farm implements showroom and warehouse built in 1897 has been reborn as a cultural center for the community retaining its original brick and timber rustic charm. Immersing guests in Minneapolis, the hotel offers unique experiences with Minnesotan flair such as a monthly music series, Alley KAT! Perkins Pop Up Concert in the adjacent alley with season 6 The Voice semi-finalist Kat Perkins. The visual art of the area is on display through regularly rotating installations of local artists. The current collection includes works from Minneapolis-based artists Roko and Toni Gallo reflecting the beauty and talent within the area.

Mutch was raised in San Diego, California. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, he began his career in technology in one of the largest data centers in Southern California. That experience highlighted his passion for online applications and the utilization of technology to simplify complex problems. After relocating to Napa, California in 2006, Mutch took his technical expertise to the wine industry, landing a position with the startup Inertia Beverage Group, now WineDirect—where he eventually became Vice President. With WineDirect, Mutch learned the unique challenges and needs of the wine industry, as well as the complexities of its highly regulated marketplace. In 2011, Mutch left WineDirect to develop his own proprietary, end-to-end solution that simplified commerce, customer management, compliance, and shipping for hundreds of wineries and retailers within the industry.

Fieldwork Brewing Company Expands Napa Valley Location

An ambassador for craft beer in Berkeley, California, Fieldwork Brewing Company expands its Napa Valley location with a new outdoor beer garden and increased indoor taproom capacity at the Oxbow Public Market Annex (1046 McKinstry Street, Napa) in spring 2021. Fieldwork Brewing opened its taproom at Oxbow Public Market in 2016, which will remain open until the Grand Opening of their new locale. At the adjacent Annex, Fieldwork builds out its indoor footprint to 1,450 square feet with an additional 900 square feet outside for the European-style beer garden. The new Fieldwork Taproom and Beer Garden at Oxbow Public Market Annex overlooks the Napa River and Oxbow Commons green space, and is located next to The Fatted Calf and Model Bakery.

BRIX NAPA VALLEY

We are happy to share that outdoor dining continues at Brix Napa Valley. Guests can relax on the spacious patio at Brix and in the garden & citrus grove overlooking the stunning vineyard, with a breathtaking view of the Mayacamas. Brix is also offering a robust selection of carry-out dishes and wines-by-the-bottle-to-go from their vast cellar. For couples who have had to cancel elaborate weddings, they can book more intimate ceremonies in the garden at Brix for the bride, groom and four special guests.

  • Brix is serving their famous Sunday Brunch à la carte. 
  • Unfortunately, Brix cannot welcome guests to sit at the bar.
  • There are motion-activated hand sanitizers throughout the estate.
  • Both reservations and walk-in guests are welcome, but Brix cannot seat parties larger than 6.
  • Guests have to wear masks when they arrive, and any time they leave their table to walk through the restaurant or garden.
  • Guests have to remain six feet away from other parties the whole time they’re at Brix.

INGLENOOK

Inglenook was founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum as Napa’s first estate winery, Inglenook boasts an illustrious heritage, a renowned legacy of innovation and an outstanding portfolio of award-winning wines that have defined and established Napa as a world-class wine region. From Gustave Niebaum to John Daniel, Jr. to Francis Ford Coppola, Inglenook’s three principal stewards have shared a strong sense of vision and an unwavering passion to create a wine estate that hearkens back to the European tradition, producing original, distinctly Napa wines that rival the best in Europe.  It remains the largest contiguous estate on the famed Rutherford Bench, Napa Valley’s finest area for producing spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon.

Inglenook is best-known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and its premier wine, Rubicon. Rubicon’s blend varies each vintage but is always predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. Inglenook also makes a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, and a complex white blend called Blancaneaux, made up of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. All of the wines are estate-produced from Inglenook’s organically-farmed vineyard. Overall, the estate is 1,680 contiguous acres, and 235 acres are planted to vineyards.

The Inglenook estate has undergone several name changes over the years.  In 1879, Finnish sea captain Gustave Niebaum purchased the Inglenook farm.  The first vintage was released in 1882 under the name “Inglenook.” In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola and his wife, Eleanor, purchased 1,560 acres of the Inglenook estate, including the Niebaum mansion. They were looking for a country home where they could raise their family. In the French tradition, they joined their name with Niebaum’s and the property became the Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery. In 2011, the Coppolas acquired the iconic Inglenook trademark and announced that henceforth the celebrated estate would be known by its historic original name, Inglenook.

Francis Ford Coppola took on the task of reuniting Inglenook with its prestigious past and has patiently reassembled the jewels of the crown. Today, the Coppola family honors Inglenook’s rich heritage by building on its legacy of innovation and forward thinking and producing internationally critically-acclaimed wines.

The gracious Inglenook team is donning white gloves and masks to protect guests and offer the impeccable, warm service for which Inglenook is known. Patio perfect: Time to take it outdoors. Dust off the patio furniture, fire up the grill, and uncork a juicy Zinfandel. An Initiative to Donate Bottles of Wine and Messages of Encouragement to Frontline Workers.

Signor Vineyards and their employees are sending personal notes of encouragement and a bottle of wine to family and loved ones who serve as frontline and essential workers.
 
-Signor Vineyards is a boutique family vineyard nestled in the Texas Hill Country that features world-class charcuterie and wine, French country gardens, and farmhouse shopping at Joanna’s Market. 

-Due to COVID-19 Signor Vineyards is closed for tastings but wine can be purchased through their drive-thru and online. 
 
 
Signor Vineyards and their employees have launched the Bottles for the Frontline campaign. Bottles for the Frontline is an initiative to share some liquid relief and words of encouragement to workers who are a part of the front line and relief efforts in fighting COVID-19. 

The Signor team have sent bottles and taken to social media to share personal notes to their loved ones. Bottles from the family vineyard are being distributed to brave men and women throughout the country. Among them are a COVID ICU Nurse at the University of Chicago, Store manager at Texas grocery store chain, HEB, Surgical RN, and many others. 

“We understand how much our frontline workers are sacrificing and putting at risk for our community. Many are working through such stressful situations and do not have the comfort of hugging their children and being around their family. We thought this small gesture could help instill a little hope and relaxation in this time.” – Will Coker, General Manager 

Typically, Springtime brings the Bluebonnets and thousands of visitors from across the country to Fredericksburg, Texas. 

Like many vineyards in the Texas Hill Country, Signor Vineyards has closed their tasting room doors until further notice and have switched to drive-thru and online sales. This has been a change of pace for the vineyard, which has become a destination where friends and family come from all over to congregate.

“A big part of what we do is bring people together. And even though we cannot do that at this time, we can carry on the feeling of joy and fellowship that comes when you open a bottle.
