Eight Healthy Tips to Prepare for Summer

It might not feel like it if you’re in the grip of a late-season cold snap. However, summer will be here before you know it!

What can you do, now, to make the most of the coming warm season? Here are eight healthy tips to prepare for summer and adjust to a sunnier mindset.

1. Get Mindful

The world might need mindfulness now more than ever. Given current world events, even turning on the news can induce panic about an uncertain future.

However, there’s little the average person can do to impact world events. It’s far more useful – and mentally healthy – to focus on what you can control and learn to radically accept what you can’t.

You might also be one of many with lingering COVID-19 fears, especially if you have a health condition that leaves you at an elevated risk. Mindfulness helps you take your time as the world opens back up, thinking about what risks you are and aren’t willing to take before you find yourself trapped in an uncomfortable situation.

2. Change Up Your Skincare Routine

You might need to slather on a heavy-duty moisturizer during the winter months. Dry indoor air and harsh winds can leave you parched, even if you normally enjoy normal or even oily skin. However, continuing the same routine as the weather warms can leave you waking up with a fresh crop of pimples.

If you have oily skin, switch to a water-based moisturizer. If you tend to shine only in the T-zones, you might want to use something heavier on your cheeks and around your eyes.

Another option is to stick to a moisturizer that uses a breathable oil, such as argan, as a base. It’s a glorious choice if you battle both wrinkles and pimples. Although it creates a barrier against pollutants and drying winds, it also regulates the amount of sebum your skin produces, minimizing blemishes.

3. Dig Into New, Fresh Recipes

Spring means the return of fresh, organic produce. Celebrate with the flavors of the season. Asparagus, artichokes, carrots, and avocados are only a few of the items you’ll find at their freshest as the weather begins to warm.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are your best sources of antioxidants, something you should get more of as the weather warms. Why? These protect your body’s cells from free radicals, substances that scavenge electrons from your body’s cells, leading to damage or death.

Lighten up your life with this morel and asparagus salad with frisée and butter lettuce. It makes a lovely solo lunch or the perfect side for a salmon steak with dinner. You’ll need:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 dozen small, fresh morels, rinsed
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 pound asparagus, halved and cut into 2-inch segments
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 5 ounces frisée, torn into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 medium head of butter lettuce, torn
  • 2 tablespoons chervil sprigs
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Melt the butter in a pan, add the stock and cook the morels for five minutes. Add the asparagus and cook for another two minutes. Season with salt and pepper and simmer until the sauce absorbs.

Whisk the lemon juice and olive oil in a small bowl with salt and pepper. Add the frisée, butter lettuce, and chervil, and then toss. Top with morels and asparagus or serve side by side if you’re preparing it as a main course.

4. Take Fitness Outdoors

Warm weather’s return means no more slogging away endless miles on the treadmill while you desperately search Netflix for another binge-worthy show to take your mind off your boredom.

Take advantage of the longer days to get out and explore some new neighborhood routes. If you need a bit more motivation to go the distance, consider joining a club. You’ll meet new friends with the same jogging habit.

If you have nature preserves near you, hiking is way more fun than your typical neighborhood stroll – although they also have their charms. You’ll get your heart rate pumping as you climb hills and work your hamstrings and glutes.

You’ll also strengthen your immunity against summer colds. Researchers investigated people who participated in forest bathing and found a higher number and activity of vital immune cells.

If you’re into gentler exercise, why not investigate your outdoor yoga class options? If it’s getting toasty where you live, you might find a paddleboard version that will challenge your balance in new ways.

5. Tackle Your Allergy Symptoms

Spring and summer bring allergies to many. Take action now to tackle those red eyes and runny noses.

Many over-the-counter medications do an effective job of taming symptoms, but some can leave you with unwanted side effects like drowsiness.

You can also look to folk remedies. While little scientific evidence exists to support consuming local honey to control your reaction to pollen, plenty of anecdotal reports suggest its efficacy. If nothing else, you get a healthy dose of various antioxidants and natural antimicrobial agents.

Another trick to slashing your misery? Wear a mask. Mandates might be lifting everywhere, but it’s still good practice. It cuts down on the number of airborne allergens you inhale while upping your chances of avoiding infection with COVID-19, especially if you’re also vaccinated.

6. Plan Your Next Getaway

Americans get miserably short-changed when it comes to vacation time. Many people have no paid leave at all and can’t miss a shift for fear of coming up short on rent. However, study after study shows that taking time away from work makes you more productive when you return to the office.

If at all possible, start planning your next getaway. If you can’t afford to take a week or two, can you afford a few hours on a Friday afternoon to start on a long weekend getaway? You can play tourist in your hometown or hit that nearby attraction two towns away.

7. Make Your Homestead More Sustainable

If your summer getaway plans consist of nothing but staycations, spend some time transforming your home. You want your decor to welcome you when you arrive home from work.

Take down heavy curtains and blinds to make the best use of natural light. Stick with gauzy curtains. Another option? One-way film. This material has the bonus of protecting your furniture and floors from the sun’s fade-inducing UV rays.

If you garden, why not save money on fertilizer by building a compost bin? Even folks who keep plants in containers on balconies can set up a small container with little effort. Organic plant material and coffee grounds belong inside. However, avoid including meat or animal waste, as these can contaminate the soil.

8. Update Your Bedroom for Better Sleep

Adequate rest is vital to your mood, immunity, and even weight control. Sleep deprivation throws off your leptin and ghrelin levels. These are two hormones responsible for telling you when to start and stop eating.

Start by removing electronic devices. The blue light their screens emit makes it challenging for you to fall under. Surround yourself with plenty of pillows.

Summer’s warmer temperatures can make sleeping difficult, as many people do best at around 65 degrees. If you don’t have central air conditioning, consider a window unit for the bedroom. If you don’t like the aesthetic, invest in a quality ceiling fan to keep a cool breeze on you all night long.

Healthy Tips to Prepare for Summer

The warm season brings with it renewed promise. Why not greet it as your healthiest self? You don’t have to go to extreme measures – merely tweak your routine. Follow these eight healthy tips to prepare for summer and get ready to enjoy the longer days.

Khamari – Doctor, My Eyes

KHAMARI RELEASES NEW SINGLE “DOCTOR, MY EYES”

LISTEN HERE

“It’s challenging to strike a perfect balance between lyrical vulnerability and catchy songwriting, but this is exactly what Boston native Khamari accomplishes with every song.” – Pigeons & Planes

“Khamari makes music that is personal and intimate as well as relatable and engaging.” – Ones To Watch

“His mellow R&B sound is a dream.” – Fashionably Early

“There’s so much melodic and textural variety that you’ll still be finding little gems after repeated listens.” – Daily Chiefers

Today, Los Angeles based, Dorchester raised songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist artist Khamari releases a new song “Doctor, My Eyes” – listen HERE. Both sonically and emotionally, “Doctor, My Eyes” finds Khamari in an introspective space as he documents the weight of feeling too much and losing self-awareness. The new song is produced by Khamari, Trackside and Johan Lenox.

‘Doctor, My Eyes’ is about looking for perspective. When I wrote it I had moved from Boston to LA and was trying to make sense of my life. A lot of things were shifting too fast to keep up with, but things I hoped would change stayed the same. I got put on to this Jackson Browne record, and the story resonated with me. That’s where I got the title. It’s about him being desperate to make any sense of his life and experiences. Then a friend played me Incubus, the song ‘Mexico’. I knew I wanted to lay out these thoughts over a guitar that intimate. In the outro my grandfather is the voice that gives me advice because he’s always been an anchor for me.

A multifaceted artist, Khamari grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, MA. Skilled as a vocalist, pianist, and guitarist, and growing up playing instruments ranging from the French horn to the violin, he left Berklee School of Music in 2017 to become a musician full time. Khamari’s music is distilled from influences ranging as wide as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi and Mac Miller.

In 2019, Khamari released his debut EP Eldorado which took listeners on a journey through his inner struggles, his relationship issues, and honest vision for himself as an artist. This introduction was met with abundant praise, landing the cover of Fresh Finds on Spotify, additional playlisting on Apple Music FEELS, Amazon’s The New Black and Breakthrough R&B, and as cover artist for Tidal’s Pop: Rising. Pigeons & Planes named Khamari a Best New Artist for the month of December 2020, stating that Eldorado “allows you to disengage from the world around you and pulls you into his own personal but relatable stories.”

His next step is to continue the hunt for the intersection of timeless musicality and contemporary style, all without losing the honest accessibility which made him relatable from the start.

Euphoria.LGBT Unveils A New Campaign

Euphoria.LGBT unveils a new campaign inspired by the Pronouns for Transgender Awareness Week

Euphoria.LGBT, Inc. is launching a new tagline, “Become who you are,” intending to synthesize the message from the transgender community to the world. The quest of the transgender community to recognize, accept, and embrace their true identity is an inspiration for each of us to dare to become who we are. This message is intrinsic to the transgender community but touches a much wider audience, from LGBTQIA+ people to all others who walk this earth. Because of miseducation and external pressure, many are scared to express who they truly are and spend their life misaligned with their soul. “Become who you are” is an invitation for everyone to live with honesty, acceptance, and courage.

To endorse this inclusive brand message, Euphoria’s first campaign is inspired by the Pronouns. It features first names from different cultures. Inside each of these names is highlighted one Pronoun. Sometimes the pronoun appears to be aligned with the original gender of the name and sometimes misaligned with it. The campaign is an invitation to respect the transgender community and everyone’s unique ownership of identity. Gender transition often starts with a pronoun and be thought of as the opening words to a story of self-acceptance and becoming oneself.

Euphoria.LGBT is a tech ecosystem for the transgender community to alleviate the great pains associated with gender transition. Euphoria’s platform includes Solace, Bliss, Catharsis, Windfall, Clarity, and Devotion. Each app offers a pragmatic solution to a specific facet of the odyssey that is transition and provides critical support and nurtures the trans souls in their courageous journey.

The transgender community is estimated to be between 2 and 6 million souls across the United States, with the global population estimated to be close to 160 million. This community is often misunderstood and stigmatized because of a lack of education in our society.

Robbi Katherine, Euphoria.LGBT Founder: “Pronouns are foundational elements of communication for every human being. For the transgender community, pronouns offer an acknowledgment of one’s truest self. These words are often the first and perhaps the most enduring reflection of the transgender soul. Pronouns are more than just words; they are portraits.”

Entering The Galapagos Islands With Superyacht

EXPEDITIONS ENTERS THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS WITH THE ARCHIPELAGO‘S FIRST SUPERYACHT

Aqua Mare to Start Sailing May 2022

Click here to watch Aqua Mare’s new launch video

Aqua Expeditions, has announced the expansion of its fleet of luxury boutique vessels with the introduction of Aqua Mare, the first true superyacht to sail the Galapagos Islands. Launching its inaugural expedition on May 6, 2022, the seven-suite Aqua Mare will offer a choice of two highly personalized seven-night itineraries exploring the Archipelago’s eastern and western regions, as well as two 14-night voyages for the Galapagos Islands’ ultimate bucket-list adventure.

The choice of the Galapagos Islands as the destination for Aqua Expeditions’ fifth vessel holds special significance as it is where the company’s CEO and Founder, Francesco Galli Zugaro, began his professional career in luxury travel. This is also the place that inspired him and co-founder Fred Brown to launch their own brand of immersive small-ship expeditions on the Peruvian Amazon River.

‘Ever since I left Ecuador in 2006 with the clarity to build my own business, I have wanted to return to the Galapagos Islands with our very own luxury expedition ship. It has been 15 years since we ventured to Peru as a family and then onward to Asia to finally come full circle back to where it all started in the iconic destination that is the Enchanted Islands,” adds Galli Zugaro.

Designed and built by the world-renowned Italian CRN yard with custom interiors by Franois Zuretti, Aqua Mare accommodates a total of 16 guests in seven individually designed suites. The 861-square-foot Owner’s Suite is the largest suite in the Galapagos Islands with a 215-square-foot bathroom. The other remaining suites are no less than 215 square feet each, showcasing the attention to detail of passionate Italian craftsmanship, design, and decor. The vessel’s interior decor includes Bali-sourced plate ware custom-made for Aqua and 17th-century prints featuring local wildlife, accurate by Aqua Expeditions’ Director Birgit Galli Zugaro.

At 164 feet and 640 gross tons, Aqua Mare is one-of-a-kind, boasting 30 percent more indoor volume than most yachts in its size class. Spread over four decks featuring shaded and open sun decks, a six-person jacuzzi, outdoor barbecue area, and an early-morning workout zone, it is the perfect base from which to explore the marine and land-based wildlife for which the Archipelago is famous.

The entire ship is lined with Italian veneer walls and plenty of indoor and outdoor dining venues to provide multiple settings for either private meals or group celebrations of sixteen. A highlight of the superyacht is its unique Beach Club’ located at the aft of the lower deck, complete with a hydraulic opening panoramic beam-to-beam window & a first for the Galapagos Islands.

Sixteen crew, including two naturalist guides, ensure a world-class five-star experience that is second to none in the Archipelago. Exclusivity is combined with exceptional service enabled by a one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio, the islands’ most personalized ratio.

Two custom-made military-grade black rib tenders with central steering consoles ensure its twice-daily expeditions are a true adventure. Led by two world-class naturalist guides, each group is capped at only eight guests & another way Aqua Expeditions ensures only the best for their guests. Aqua Mare is also equipped with double kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkeling gear, enhancing the immersive explorations on each of the islands’ visitor sites.

Award-winning Peruvian chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino – the long-time culinary mastermind behind the Amazonia-inspired menus of Aria Amazon and Aqua Nera – is once again partnering with Aqua Expeditions as Consulting Chef for Aqua Mare. Taking inspiration from the Coast to the Pacific, Chef Schiaffino will deliver a Peruvian Japanese Nikkei-inspired menu consisting of only the freshest sustainable ingredients sourced from local suppliers all the way to the Andes of Ecuador. Highlights to look forward to doing include Galapague; lobster lettuce wraps with Acevichado dressing, delicate potato llapingachos, tuna Crudo, barbecued plantains, and shrimp ceviche.

The highly anticipated expansion of Aqua Expeditions into the Galapagos Islands is a story that come full circle not only in relation to the company’s origin but also binding together two of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems, the Galapagos Islands and East Indonesian Archipelagos; both sites of inspiration for one of science’s greatest breakthroughs.

“It’s Darwin’s legacy that really gives meaning to my vision of 15 years ago. Today, who would have guessed that we would be bridging the gap between the Galapagos Islands and Indonesia’s Coral Triangle, where Aqua Mare’s bigger sister yacht Aqua Blu navigates and where another British naturalist and explorer, Alfred Russel Wallace, co-discovered the theory of evolution and natural selection,” remarked Galli Zugaro.

Together with this summer’s recent launch of Aqua Nera on the Peruvian Amazon, the announcement of Aqua Mare is a testament to the company’s steadfast commitment to the experiential travel niche; and yet another confirmation that its acclaimed small-ship expeditions in remote wildlife- and nature-focused destinations are poised for a strong comeback.

Rates on Aqua Mare start from $9,450 per person for a 7-night itinerary, including all meals and beverages (non-alcoholic, premium wines, and beer); local transfers to/from recommended flights; all excursions, Galapagos Park entrance fees, and INGALA transit card; laundry service and internet. A 7-night charter for up to 16 passengers starts from $196,000, including house spirits and a private masseuse 5 hours per day.

Aqua Mare departs weekly from May 6, 2022, onwards, and is now open for booking via www.aquaexpeditions.com or your preferred travel agent. Contact Aqua Expeditions at www.aquaexpeditions.com/contact-us/ for more information.

NFL’s Kelvin Beachum

Tonight, the NFL and its Inspire Change social justice initiative premiered a new feature highlighting Arizona Cardinals’ tackle Kelvin Beachum and the work he does with his Kelvin Konnects initiative during NFL Network show Total Access. Kelvin Konnects works to increase minority access to careers within the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics fields to young adults in the greater-Dallas metropolitan area.

The new feature highlights Kelvin’s passion for and introduction to STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics – and his realization of the need for greater access to such education amongst minority communities. This realization led to the founding of Kelvin Konnects, which connects students of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA) in Dallas, Texas with industry leaders, local and federal elected officials and offers the opportunity for these students to immerse themselves in the world of STEAM.

Through the program, Kelvin Konnects works to create a sustainable pipeline from student to professional and bridge the gap of access and opportunity by providing various STEAM programming, robotics access, professional and educational field trips, college/University tours, and speaker series.

The feature also highlights the stories of Timothy McCall and Sienzhi Kouemo who were both parts of Kelvin Konnects and BOMLA. Through mentorship with Kelvin and utilizing the resources the programs provide, Sienzhi is continuing his education at Southern Methodist University and McCall secured employment at Goldman Sachs.

Throughout the year, the NFL and its Inspire Change social justice initiative aim to continue to move us toward a more equal and just tomorrow by reducing barriers to opportunity. It puts specific emphasis on four pillars; police-community relations, economic advancement, criminal justice reform, and education.
