Kokomo Murase Snowboard Win

Monster Energy congratulates Kokomo Murase on her first-place finish in Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle at the Audi SnowJam in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic. In the official World Cup event sanctioned by the International Ski Federation (FIS), the 17-year-old from Gifu, Japan, earned a dominant victory. She now ranks first in FIS World Cup Slopestyle and has secured the Crystal Globe win in overall Women’s Park & Pipe rankings.

As the penultimate event of the FIS World Cup season, the Audi SnowJam was contested from March 16-19 for the first time in five years. The contest at the popular resort inside Krkonoše National Park offered one of the last chances to collect points towards winning the 2021/22 season’s coveted Crystal Globe trophies.

Scoring points is exactly what brought Monster Energy’s Murase to the Czech Republic. The young Japanese ripper dropped into the contest ranked in first position on the FIS World Cup Slopestyle leaderboards in a tie with Canada’s Laurie Blouin at 160 points. This was her chance to build a commanding lead.

And she did. On the creative downhill course, Murase worked the rail with a switch backside boardslide pretzel into a backside 900 off the jump, Cab 720 mute grab, lipslide pretzel the kicker rail and a huge frontside 1080 lien grab at the bottom. “I’m so happy, I did my best in riding this competition and I’m very happy I won,” said Murase.

After Saturday’s win at Spindleruv Mlyn, Murase now leads the 2022 FIS Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle rankings with 260.00 points, a strong 86 points ahead of Jasmine Baird in second place. With one more contest to go, Murase also commands an unbeatable score of 396.00 points in Women’s Park & Pipe overall World Cup standings. Leading the next competitor by 122 points, the Japanese ripper has secured the season’s Crystal Globe trophy.

Will Murase also claim the Slopestyle trophy? Stay tuned for the final World Cup of the season next weekend at Silvaplana, Switzerland, from March 25-27.

Prior to this weekend’s World Cup, Murase claimed bronze in Women’s Snowboard Big Air at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. At age 13, she made history at X Games Norway 2018 as the first girl to land a 1260 double cork in competition and became the youngest Winter X Games athlete ever to win a gold medal.

Monster Energy congratulates its team of freeski and snowboard athletes on claiming four medals (1 gold and 3 bronze) on the third and final day of X Games Aspen 2022 at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen Snowmass, Colorado.

In the highly competitive Men’s Ski Slopestyle final, 23-year-old Monster Energy rider Alex Hall from Park City, Utah, posted a perfect run on his last attempt to walk away with the bronze medal. As the nighttime action kicked off with Wendy’s Ski Knuckle Huck, 24-year-old American Quinn Wolferman claimed gold by posting the most creative tricks in the jam session. Plus, all-round talent Alex Hall edged into bronze-medal position and became the first male winter sports athlete to take home medals in three contest events at the same X Games.

Rounding out an action-packed weekend, the Men’s Ski SuperPipe final saw 31-year-old Olympic freeskier David Wise from Reno, Nevada, take the bronze medal in an elite field. 

The world’s biggest snow sports spectacle returned to Aspen in the heart of the Rocky Mountains for the 21st consecutive time this weekend. Started in 1997 at Snow Summit Resort in Big Bear Lake, California, the Winter X Games celebrated 25 years of showcasing the latest progression in snow sports this weekend.

Supported by Monster Energy as the official energy drink partner of X Games, the three-day spectacle featured Men’s and Women’s Ski and Snowboard competitions in the disciplines of Slopestyle, Big Air, SuperPipe, and the innovative Knuckle Huck, alongside Special Olympics Unified competitions. As the pinnacle of winter action sports, X Games Aspen 2022 brought out 87 of the world’s best action sports athletes competing for a total of 42 medals across 14 disciplines.

The fans were also back on Buttermilk Mountain in full force! After allowing only athletes and staff the previous year, X Games Aspen 2022 welcomed spectators back to competition viewing and X Fest areas amid stringent COVID-19 safety protocols. This weekend featured fan activations, a festival village and DJ performances. ESPN and ABC broadcast 13.5 hours of live competition, with 7.5 additional hours streamed live on @XGames digital channels, and all 21 hours were live via the ESPN App.

Here’s how the action unfolded for team Monster Energy on the final day of X Games Aspen 2022:

Men’s Ski Slopestyle: Monster Energy’s Alex Hall Takes Bronze in Heated Finals

The final day of X Games Aspen 2022 started with a showdown for the history books: The Men’s Ski Slopestyle final featured ten of the world’s leading freeskiers, including five prior medalists in the disciple as well as defending champion Nick Goepper from Indiana. Countries represented in the final session included Canada, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In a 35-minute jam session, riders took turns trying to post the highest-scoring single run on the downhill obstacle course. Designed by expert snow shapers Snowpark Technologies, the course challenged riders with 15 different rail and jib obstacles at the top, plus a series of consecutive jumps that ended in a massive final jump also used in the weekend’s Big Air discipline.

Amid blue skies and favorable course conditions, the level of riding soon escalated with athletes such as Monster Energy’s James Woods posting perfect runs and next-level tricks. Other riders struggled to land the line they wanted, including 23-year-old Monster Energy rider Alex Hall from Park City, Utah. Although he was boosted by a sensational Ski Big Air win on the previous night, Hall had difficulty on the rails and found himself far outside podium position as the contest went into last attempts.

With only one run to go, Hall proved once again that he has the nerves and bag of tricks for down-to-the-wire situations. On the rails, he showcased his technical progression with a switch on gap 450 the cannon rail, 450 on 450 out, and Cab 270 pretzel 450 out. In the jump section, he put down a clean left double 1080 and an extremely difficult rightside double cork 900 pullback; technically a 1080-degree rotation but ‘pulled back’ 180 degrees in the opposite direction right before landing. On the final hit, Hall stomped a switch leftside 1800 in his signature Buick grab to finish in bronze-medal position. And he still had plans for Knuckle Huck!

Wendy’s Ski Knuckle Huck: Monster Energy’s Quinn Wolferman Claims Golden Knuckle, Alex Hall Takes Bronze as Third Medal at the Same X Games

The last nighttime segment of X Games Aspen 2022 kicked off with the Wendy’s Ski Knuckle Huck under the floodlights. In a 20-minute jam session, eight of the world’s best freeskiers ‘hucked’ their most technical and stylish moves off the Big Air jump ramp’s roll-over, also called the ‘knuckle’.

When the action got underway, 24-year-old Quinn Wolferman from Missoula, Montana, was looking to improve on finishing in third place at X Games Aspen 2021 and 2020. But with riders like previous gold medalist Colby Stevenson in the mix, it was a tall order.

But in a showcase of style and creativity, Wolferman convinced the judges to earn the coveted Knuckle Huck gold medal in the shape of a Golden Knuckle. Highlights included leftside 720 tail grab off the nose, tailbutter underflip revert, worm turn slide and a huge double cork 1080 out of a nose butter sent far down the landing.

“I’m kind of speechless honestly! Thanks to everybody who lets us come out here and do this. It’s been the best Knuckle Huck, yet” said Wolferman upon taking the Golden Knuckle trophy at X Games Aspen 2022. “Everybody crushed and these dudes all went so hard! I commend them all for coming out and sending it!”

Born and raised under the great big Midwestern sky of Montana, Wolferman is known for his slopestyle and street talent. Sunday’s gold medal is his career-first medal at an X Games (Knuckle Huck did not award silver or bronze medals in previous years).

Also rising to the podium, Alex Hall put his signature drive for innovation on full display in the jam session. Tricks like a switch hand drag slide late shifty, backslide one-footer to 360, backslide backward noseslide to Cab 360 and big spin nose and tail butter to Cab 360 and a low backward belly slide over the knuckle to late pretzel earned him the bronze medal.

And just like that, Hall made history as the first male winter sports athlete to take home medals in three contest events at the same X Games. Hall now owns 9 X Games medals (5 Gold, 1 Silver, 3 Bronze). The Park City local has also achieved the rare feat of earning X Games gold medals in four disciplines: Big Air, Slopestyle, Knuckle Huck, and the Real Ski video competition. 

Men’s Ski SuperPipe: Monster Energy’s David Wise Soars to Bronze Medal Finish

Wrapping up the 25th edition of Winter X Games in style, the nighttime action culminated in the Men’s Ski SuperPipe final. The high-energy crowd celebrated a 35-minute jam session of progressive vertical freeski on hallowed ground: With its 22-feet high walls and 570-feet in overall length, the SuperPipe on Buttermilk Mountain is praised by competitors as the best of its kind on the circuit.

Setting the tone for an epic final event, hip-hop artist ASAP Ferg performed at the bottom of the SuperPipe. Then it was time for ten finalists to battle for the top spot. The field included riders from Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Out of ten riders, five had previously won X Games gold in the discipline – so the level of riding was bound to be off the charts! 

The list of previous gold medalists on the roster also included David Wise from Reno, Nevada, who took the win in X Games SuperPipe four times (Aspen 2012-2014, Aspen 2018). Currently in peak shape for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Wise rose all the way to second place at the FIS World Cup at Mammoth before coming to Aspen. 

Although dropping in as the oldest competitor at 31 years, the two-time Olympic gold medalist proved he still has the skills to rise to the podium. In his third run of the night, Wise put together a perfect routine. Dropping into the SuperPipe backwards, he landed a switch rightside 720, switch leftside double cork 1080 Japan, corked rightside 540 tailgrab, leftside double cork 1260 mute grab, and rightside double cork 1260 mute on the final wall for the bronze medal.

By earning bronze on Sunday night, Wise broke a record: Previously, no man older than 28 had earned a Ski SuperPipe medal at X Games. Known as a pioneer of freeski halfpipe riding, Wise has seen and won it all: His unparalleled track record includes two Olympic gold medals (2014 and 2018) as seven X Games medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze). Wise will represent the United States in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. 

This wraps up a history-making edition of Winter X Games in Aspen! When all was said and done, the Monster Energy team took home an incredible 23 medals (5 Gold, 7 Silver, 11 Bronze) in the world’s biggest winter action sports showcase.

Tips to Maintain a Healthy Back

With the COVID-19 pandemic reaching another surge this holiday season, its more important than ever to stay safe, protected and healthy. With the pandemic continuing throughout the winter season, it’s easy to forget that the chilling winter weather can result in the muscles and ligaments of our bodies to contract and tighten significantly more. The muscles and ligaments that strengthen the back and spine, as well as the shoulders and knees, are considerably impacted by these seasonal changes.

From the Pinkston News Service comes a series of tips from Dr. Rita Roy, Chief Executive Officer of the National Spine Health Foundation, on how to protect and keep your back healthy during these frostier months.

Stretch regularly

Implementing a consistent stretching routine can lower your risk of injury, and can even elevate the healing process of a previous injury. Engaging in basic back stretches such as the child’s pose or cat-cow and enhance strength and flexibility to your spine.

Wear proper footwear

Dr. Rita Roy encourages everyone to be mindful of the shoes that you plan to wear depending on the weather you may be dealing with. Make sure that your footwear is a fitting size, by trying them on in-store first, if you can. Ensure that your shoes have proper lining to keep you warm during the chilling temperatures. Making note to purchase a set of footwear that has non-stick rubber soles and treads on the bottom of the shoe for an extra level of safety from slipping. Remember to also take those shoes off when you head indoors, replacing them with socks or slippers, so you don’t run the risk of slipping inside as well.

Be aware of your surroundings

If you know that you may be heading outside, make sure to pay attention to what surfaces you step foot on. To get ahead of the game, keep up on the weather conditions heading your way. If you live in an area with a lot of icy roads and sidewalks, make sure to take your time, walk slowly and steer clear of carrying large items along your path. Make sure to look around you and use the objects that are not moving to your advantage; hold onto a handrail or tree to give yourself some extra balance. Keep your eyes peeled and watch around you to avoid unwarranted hazards.

Stay active

While winter follows the holiday season, this may warrant a lot of eating, sitting around and mood shifts. Seasonal depression is ever apparent through this time of year, so it’s extremely crucial to get your body moving to aid the dreariness that comes with winter. Moving around in between meals through exercising can help you in more ways than you may know.

Don’t overextend yourself

While it is crucial that you keep exercising, be sure to not overreach these efforts. The end of the holiday season raises a whole new set of physical activities, such as, hanging Christmas lights and shoveling snow. These unique tasks pose risks to the body because these are not activities that are regularly carried out year-round. Shoveling snow can cause intense stress to your back. It is vital that you use proper techniques and equipment when carrying out these tasks. Give yourself well-needed breaks and time to rest while participating in these endeavors.

Always wear a seatbelt

This may seem like a misplaced tip among the rest, but nonetheless this one is exceptionally valuable. Studies have found that a large amount of weather-related auto accidents happen throughout the winter, and around 76,000 people become hurt in accidents that result on snowy or slushy roads. Back pain can result from a mere low-speed fender-bender since the body was not anticipating the impact. So, keeping your seatbelt on can limit these sudden movements.

Reebok and KANGHYUK announce the latest drop in their ongoing collaboration. The two brands have teamed up to debut their combined take on a new silhouette from Reebok – the Premier Road Modern Mid.

Following the popular Premier Road Modern silhouette that debuted in 2020 as part of the Reebok and KANGHYUK partnership, the two teams created a masterfully maximalist mid-cut version of the shoe dubbed the Premier Road Modern Mid. Boasting a new mid-cut collar, the shoe is an elevated version of the Premier Road Modern “Car Part” released by the two brands in 2020.

The new style offers bold details, sculpted design lines and a crisp tonal color scheme. The uppers of each shoe are split between layers and feature a textured build that is an abstract take on Reebok’s signature Vector logo.

This experimentation with tone and texture reaches from the toebox to the heel, while the high-cut collar offers bulbous padded details around the ankle and incorporates a KANGHYUK logo stamped on the heel. Below this sits a rubberized bumper and red foam midsoles which feature a soft EVA construction for comfort.

Premier Boutique Heli-Skiing Operator Takes Action on Climate Change by Taking a Hard Look at its Operations and Offsetting its Carbon Footprint

Northern Escape Heli-Skiing (NEH) has recently become one of the first carbon-neutral heli-skiing operators in the world. The operator partnered with Synergy Enterprises and Offsetters, Canada’s leading carbon management agency, to take action on climate change and offset its current carbon footprint. NEH purchased offsets that benefit The Great Bear Forest and the First Nations living in the region, as well as the Lara Ceramic plant-based in Brazil by helping to decrease deforestation in the area.

In addition, the operator has a three-year plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and adopt renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and electric vehicles to support its operations. The passion to create a more sustainable approach to heli-skiing comes from NEH leadership. “Over the 35 years of my career as an ACMG Guide, I have witnessed incremental changes in our climate, our snowpack, and our glaciers. The first of many steps to achieve this for us is to become carbon neutral. We need to do the best we can to mitigate climate change and become a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem. Skiing, Snowshoeing Popular During COVID Isolation

With the holidays behind us and more snowstorms expected in Park City, Utah, YOTELPAD Park City is seeing a robust level of skiers taking advantage of the new hotel’s first season at the base of Park City Mountain.

The largest ski and snowboard resort in the United States, Park City Mountain has added YOTELPAD Park City last month to Canyons Village with easy access to the Gondola and Orange Bubble ski lifts to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, shopping, dining and après ski.

“We’re finding this year that cross country skiing and snowshoeing has taken a leap in popularity with our guests,” said Brandon Tyler, general manager of YOTELPAD Park City. “YOTELPAD Park City is at the base of one of the best ski mountains in the country, and families are relishing all of our outdoor winter activities.”

One national report showed 2019-20 cross country skiing was up to 5.2 percent from year-earlier figures of 4.9 percent, while year-over-year snowshoeing increased to 3.6 percent from 3.4 percent, according to Cross Country Ski Areas Association.

“With 7,300 acres of open mountain terrain as a playground, guests are loving recreating in the clean mountain while naturally distancing from others,” said Tyler, whose team opened the 144-PAD (YOTEL-speak for condos) hotel Dec. 17, 2020.

The first in the world of its kind, YOTELPAD Park City is a fully tech-equipped hotel with self-service check-in stations, Grab+Go meals and drinks, a 24/7 gym with the latest Life Fitness & Peloton equipment, ski valet service, a fireside lounge and more.

“YOTELPAD’s differentiator is our innovative designs for various-sized PADs, which include Italian furniture that transforms into multiple uses in the same room space,” he said. “Guests absolutely love the European-inspired floor plans because they optimize every inch of PADs, which can accommodate up to seven guests and make it the perfect mountain base for adventure seekers.”

Born from creative leaders at London’s YOTEL, the YOTELPAD concept is drastically altering consumers’ images of hotels.

“This first YOTELPAD is changing travelers’ expectation of hotels, which will cause hotels to adapt to travelers’ demands,” said Tyler. “From top to bottom, these PADs offer incredible options for guests. Intelligently designed PADs allow guests to enjoy the benefits of their stay without added expenses.”

Tapping into the local fresh food options, YOTELPAD provides with several local food options.

“To accommodate guests’ preferences, our Grab+Go food express offers fresh, farm-to-table local food,” he said. “Savoury Kitchen provides breakfast burritos, oatmeal, soups, sandwiches and salads. Dinner originates from Rebekah’s Kitchen, with items such as turkey chili and minestrone stew. Gold Creek Farms provides locally harvested cheeses daily.

“From quality coffees, such as Lavazza, to high-end takeaway meals, we offer a wide array of food, drinks and retail items.”

Already at 85 percent sold, YOTELPAD’s owners can submit their PADs into a nightly rental program when not in use.
