NETFLIX REVEALS WEDNESDAY

The streaming platform reveals the image of Tim Burton’s Addams Family members in ‘Wednesday’.

Fans of Tim Burton and the Addams Family are overwhelmed with excitement. The new Netflix series entitled Wednesday, directed in its first four episodes by the renowned director who has signed films such as Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, who will also be in charge of the executive production of all the fiction, will be launched on the streaming video platform next fall. The first details about its format are already known.

For now, Netflix has released the first images of the actors who, with Jenna Ortega in the lead in the role of the dreadful Wednesday, make up the cast of this spin-off.

In a first picture made public of the entire Addams family — The streaming platform already released a teaser presenting its main protagonist alone last month of June — and in others collected by Vanity Fair magazine, fans have been able to find out what Morticia‘s characters will look like, represented by Cahterin Zeta-Jone herself; Pugsley, Wednesday‘s brother who is played on this occasion by Isaac Ordonez and lastly, Gomez, who actor Luis Guzmán will play.

Collen Atwood, in charge of wardrobe

Tim Burton’s trusted costume designer and winner of four Academy Awards for Memoirs of a Gheisha, Chicago, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Alice in Wonderland will dress the Addams Family. Netflix has allowed us to see the result of Collen Atwood’s work in her trailer.

Atwood, staying true to the vignettes of the Addams family that were published in The New Yorker, has designed for Morticia, the matriarch of the clan, a very tight black dress with a pleat at the hip and flared sleeves that give the necessary empowerment to his character so that it makes her shine.

Wednesday, the great protagonist, will also appear with a reinterpretation of the classic buttoned dress with a collar and shirt sleeves that she has already worn in many other previous Addams family audiovisual productions.

In this case, Atwood wanted to design a much longer garment for her and had it combined with thick black stockings and black patent leather shoes. This is the color of Wednesday, and she couldn’t give it up.

Finally, the male clothing designs are also elegant, sober, and with the somber touch, that fiction requires. Pugsley will wear Dr. Martens-style boots, shorts, and a sweater with horizontal stripes that help achieve the effect of a somewhat innocent boy.

TOP STORIES – FEBRUARY

2022 has proven to be nothing short of eventful with only one month under its belt. Below, we discuss and highlight the leading news stories for the month of love, February.

Rihanna pregnant with first baby

Esteemed musical artist, fashion and business icon Rihanna is expecting her first child with boyfriend A$AP Rocky. She debuted her baby bump for the first time while out in New York City – you’ve seen the photos; Rihanna looking effervescent in a long, pink jacket strolling through the streets of Harlem.

Whoopi Goldberg suspended from ‘The View’

The announcement of Whoopi Goldberg’s suspension from ‘The View’ came the evening of Tuesday February 1 following her stating that the Holocaust was “not about race.” She argued that both the Nazis and Jews were white on the programming, later apologizing for these comments.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, was invited to the show on Tuesday where he told Whoopi, “There’s no question that the Holocaust was about race. Literally, the first page of ‘Maus,’ the book you were talking about yesterday, Whoopi, opens with a quote from Hitler, and literally it says, ‘The Jews undoubtedly are a race, but they are not human.’ Hitler’s ideology was predicated on the idea that … the Jews were a subhuman race. It was a racialized anti-Semitism.”

Whoopi extended her apologies, stating, “So yesterday on our show, I misspoke… “I said that the Holocaust wasn’t about race, and it was instead about man’s inhumanity to man — but it is indeed about race, because Hitler and the Nazis considered Jews to be an inferior race.”

She continued, “Words matter, and mine are no exception. I regret my comments, and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people.”

US to deploy troops amidst Russia/Ukraine conflict

February 2, the Pentagon announced that United States President Joe Biden authorized the deployment of 3,000 US troops to Poland, Germany, and Romania. This repositioning of US military persons comes from the suspicion of a potential invasion of Ukraine initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This skepticism comes from the growing presence of Russian military near the borders. Which has caught the attention of Ukraine and fellow NATO allies. A total of 3,000 troops will be moved, with 2,000 leaving directly from the US and 1,000 troops already in Germany planning to relocate to Romania.

Pam & Tommy premieres

The long-awaited Hulu series Pam & Tommy premiered on February 2. The series follows the infamous love story of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, portrayed by Lily James and Sebastian Stan. The couple inadvertently went viral when their stolen 1995 confidential sex tape was posted online.

Pamela has voiced her disapproval of Pam & Tommy, while Tommy has been in support of the new show. An insider communicated that the robbed home video devastates Pamela and is a topic she does not wish to be rehashed.

The insider stated, “It was a violation having this tape taken. This was a very traumatic time in her life. And it’s shocking that they are recreating it.” They continued, referencing Pamela when saying, “apparently doesn’t deserve privacy because she’s a sex symbol. It’s a sad reflection of how far we’ve not come as a society. Where are the apologies owed to Pam?

Tommy talked about the portrayal of their history, stating, “I think a lot of people would think that it’s one thing, but it’s really about privacy and how things got crazy then and there’s different laws now.” He continued, “It’s a cool story and people need to know. It’s cool. I’m stoked.

Satellite images depict increasing Russian military presence in Belarus

Amidst the growing suspicion of a potential Russian military invasion into Ukraine, new satellite images from February 5 show an increase in intensity in Russian military sites in locations like Belarus. The images are assumed to be connected to combined efforts with Russian and Belarusian exercises.

Although these images may add to the rising awareness of Ukraine and NATO allies, further imaging also depicts camps being set up closer to Ukraine’s borders, far away from where the Russian/Belarus practices are set up.

Euphoria renewed for season 3

As the dramatic second season of the blockbuster HBO series Euphoria continues to air throughout the course of February, the show has been confirmed for a third season. As one of the most encapsulating series airing modern day, there was no question as to if the series would come back for a third series, but nonetheless this announcement gives us that reassurance we all were anticipating!

Peloton enlists new CEO and removes 2,800 jobs

Popular fitness company Peloton announced the removal of their former CEO John Foley for his replacement Barry McCarthy. McCarthy has worked for the likes of Spotify and Netflix as the brands chief financial officers, now taking on the title of CEO and president of Peloton on Wednesday February 9.

Peloton, too, announced their elimination of around 2,800 employees amidst new brand operation plans. Further projects include the limitation of warehouses that the brand owns and making the switch to broadening delivery arrangements with more third-party sources. All these changes come to amass a whopping $800 million saving in annual expenses.

The company also announced that their official first factory in the United States is almost ready to open in Ohio. The production of the factory, like the other changes to the company, aims to lessen costs and save around $60 million for Peloton.

12-year-old Black swimmer almost excluded from swim meet after wearing a ‘Black Lives Matter’ swimsuit

A 12-year-old Black swimmer was nearly disqualified from a Wisconsin swim meet for wearing a ‘Black Lives Matter’ swimsuit. The Duluth Area Family YMCA, who was in sponsor of the February 6 meet, stated an independent volunteer official tried to ban the student from the meet, asserting that the suit went in opposition to a USA Swimming rule that bans political language.

Sarah Lyons, mother of Leidy, argued that her daughter wore the suit to show her unwavering support for the Black Lives Matter movement, as it is in an important cause to her. Lyons stated, “She is very passionate about social justice. She has been through a lot already at a young age. It’s a big part of her, which I think is wild at 12,” she told CNN affiliate KBJR.

The YMCA overrode the threat from the official to exclude Leidy from the swim meet. They further issued a statement that read, “The Duluth Area Family YMCA is committed to being an anti-racist organization and stands with BIPOC communities throughout the Northland and throughout our country. We know that Black Lives Matter and we will continue to work to educate ourselves, to stand against inequality, and to strive to be active allies in the ongoing fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Book bans swarm US school libraries

The United States has reportedly seen a rise in the number of book bans, increasing from the end of 2021 to mid-February. Differing book bans in various places across the nation have been argued due to the contents of such books. Often, the books under fire contain some type of content relating to topics including race, gender and sexuality.

Local school boards and librarians have faced scrutiny and potential criminal charges from concerned parents. Bills in states such as Oklahoma have been created to outlaw public school libraries from housing books that had subject matter surrounding sexual activity/identity or gender identity. Another instance that had the nation, and Whoopi Goldberg, talking followed the exclusion of the ‘Maus’ from an eighth-grade module as voted on by the McMinn County Board of Education. The removal of the crucial Holocaust novel came due to “nudity and curse words.”

These book bans have been rather controversial due to the US’ protection of free speech under the first amendment. While conservative activists have been pushing for the restriction of books that delve into the US’ history of slavery and racial oppression, liberal activists have urged against books that may contain racist or insensitive material.

Sarah Palin x The New York Times defamation trial comes to an end

February 15 a Manhattan jury in the widespread Sarah Palin defamation trial against the Times ruled against the former Alaskan governor. This decision came following the judge’s decision to dismiss the suit on February 14. His reasoning stemmed from the fact that he believed that there was not enough suitable evidence to prove that the Times’ 2017 editorial in question defamed Palin.

Russian leaders announced that they have approved a full-scale attack on Ukraine, after Putin announced that the neighboring country poses a threat to them. Putin believes there is aggression near the country’s border. Russia’s embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, has been cleared out. Putin delivered a fiery speech in which he declared that Ukraine had no right to exist, most likely based on the fact that the country gained its independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Russian troops are continuously added to the country’s border, and The Pentagon has stated that the attacks might occur at any time.

Ukraine President Volodomir Zelenskyy stated that Russia has no reason to believe Ukraine poses any threat to them, and asked for a call to Putin, which was denied. Ukraine has now issued a State of Emergency and is preparing for the invasion. Many national leaders are deeming invasion imminent. Sanctions have been placed on several Kremlin officials as a warning. Vice President Kamala Harris stated the US response to Russia would be “swift, severe, and united.”

Maestro Moon Phase Watch

The Maestro Moon Phase gives a new meaning to space & time. A moon phase aperture at six o’clock adds an element of otherworldly romance to this classic watch. Moon phase displays were common on clocks & pocket watches dating back to the renaissance period. Combining art & science, this feature demonstrates watchmaking technical mastery. Moon phase watches show the various phases of the moon, which has always provided time with an orientation. The moon was the first method of telling the passing of months.

A “moon phase” is the lighted area of the moon that is visible as it travels around the earth. Its journey is exactly 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes & 2.9 seconds.

To set your maestro moon phase watch, you must determine the date of the last full moon in the lunar cycle. Once you have the number of days, pull out the crown and twist counterclockwise. Turn once for each day elapsed.

While this measurement of time may be antiquated; it still represents historical craftsmanship & gives this maestro model a whimsical vintage appeal. The combined open balance wheel on this maestro watch reveals the “heart of the movement”. It is just a glimpse into the precision, quality, and technical assembly inside the refined design of a 39.5mm case.

Hopping Ghosts Figurine

Osaka Popstar presents “Hopping Ghosts” the new Ltd Ed. 8″ vinyl figure that comes complete with its own punk-rock theme song!

Chinese vampire mythology takes a spin through the mind of Osaka Popstar creator/frontman John Cafiero-who designed the figure and penned the accompanying single.

Each figure is 8-inches tall, with a removable scroll spell accessory, and comes packaged in a full-color art box with a free download card for the new single “Hopping Ghosts” by Osaka Popstar. The single features John Cafiero (vocals) backed by a lineup featuring Dennis Diken (The Smithereens) Drums, Sal Maida (Cracker, Milk & Cookies, Roxy Music) Bass, and Dean Rispler (The Dictators NYC, Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black) Guitar. Download also includes an alternate “animated instrumental” version (as heard in the animated promo for the new figure line).

What exactly is a Hopping Ghost? Known as Jiangshi in Chinese folklore and kyonshī in Japan, hopping ghosts or hopping vampires are basically a breed of zombie; reanimated corpses dressed in traditional garments from the Qing Dynasty. Rigor mortis has set in so they can only move around by hopping with their arms outstretched! They can’t see using traditional vision. Instead, they sense living creatures by their breath and seek to absorb the life force of the living. They can be stopped with a scroll to the forehead containing a spell written in a mix of ink and blood and led by Taoist priests using bells.

moon d’elle Collection 2

Italian luxury footwear brand moon d’elle is proud to announce the launch of its Capri-inspired Collection 2, arriving April 11, 2022.

Collection 2 marks the brand’s first foray into sandals, just in time for warmer weather. Founders and sisters Tabitha and Chandra Perkins were inspired by a trip to Capri, which they explored mostly by foot and boat, when designing their latest collection.

The vibrant hues and natural elements of the island found themselves embedded in this collection. From the deep blue hues of the sea to the light blue waters of the grottos, the blush hues of sunsets along sandy beaches, and even the shapes of the sunlight’s rays, the sisters drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the island for the colors, textures, and silhouettes of their latest pieces.

The second collection continues to showcase one of moon d’elle‘s signature traits of mixing different materials and textures to fuse classic with modern elements, such as nappa leather and snakeskin, with a partial lamination in metallic on precious suede with linen fabric. Light-colored earth tones and pastels dominate the newest designs, with fresh materials like transparent mesh, crystal appliques, and glitter rainbow leather.

Following the popular Premier Road Modern silhouette that debuted in 2020 as part of the Reebok and KANGHYUK partnership, the two teams created a masterfully maximalist mid-cut version of the shoe dubbed the Premier Road Modern Mid. Boasting a new mid-cut collar, the shoe is an elevated version of the Premier Road Modern “Car Part” released by the two brands in 2020.

The new style offers bold details, sculpted design lines and a crisp tonal color scheme. The uppers of each shoe are split between layers and feature a textured build that is an abstract take on Reebok’s signature Vector logo.

This experimentation with tone and texture reaches from the toebox to the heel, while the high-cut collar offers bulbous padded details around the ankle and incorporates a KANGHYUK logo stamped on the heel. Below this sits a rubberized bumper and red foam midsoles which feature a soft EVA construction for comfort.

The Reebok x KANGHYUK Premier Road Modern Mid will be available in two striking colorways – Black (GW6192) and Blue (GW6132) – each for $240.

The Black Premier Road Modern Mid will be available exclusively at Dover Street Market beginning June 23rd before becoming available on Reebok.com and KANGHYUK.shop on June 25th. The Blue Premier Road Modern Mid will be globally available beginning July 1 from select retailers as well as Reebok.com and KANGHYUK.shop.

Summer House Season 6

BRAVO’S FAVORITE SUMMER CREW IS BACK WHEN “SUMMER HOUSE” RETURNS ON MONDAY, JANUARY 17 AT 9PM ET/PT

The temperature isn’t the only thing heating up this Summer! Bravo is heading back to the Hamptons for season six of “Summer House,” premiering on Monday, January 17 at 9pm ET/PT. After spending last summer quarantined together, the housemates are back to their regular routine of hustling during the week in NYC and spending their weekends out East with epic parties, dramatic love triangles and of course, rosé all day. Returning this summer are Lindsay Hubbard, Paige DeSorbo, Kyle Cooke, Amanda Batula, Carl Radke, Danielle Olivera, Ciara Miller and Luke Gulbranson. The housemates are joined by new friends Andrea Denver, Mya Allen and Alex Wach and special appearances are made throughout the season by Craig Conover and Austen Kroll of Bravo’s “Southern Charm. For a sneak peek, click here.

Coming up this season:

  • At a major crossroads in her life, the usually ambitious and determined Lindsay Hubbard is hesitant on what her next steps are. After being friend-zoned by Austen in Vermont, Lindsay continued to date Jason in the city until she experienced the biggest personal drama in her life yet. Unsure if she wants to continue things with Jason or date around this summer, Lindsay is confronted by some of her housemates that her “Hot Hubbs Summer” behavior might be getting a little too hot.
  • Paige DeSorbo is living her best life. Soon after leaving Vermont, her long-term crush Craig Conover became single and she doesn’t lose the opportunity to explore a potential relationship with him. However, upon entering the summer, Paige learns that her past-fling Andrea will also be joining the house and she is eager to see if their chemistry is still as hot as before. She is definitely smitten with both of these men… but after learning Craig might be hooking up with a well-known celebrity, she has no issues showing him that she has plenty of options of her own.
  • Last summer, Kyle Cooke and fiancé Amanda were doing better than ever, but living and working together for the past year has clearly taken its toll and the two hit their lowest point yet. Being that this is the last summer before he ties the knot, Kyle is determined to go big or go home. With many of the housemates already doubting their wedding will even happen, Kyle is forced to get his priorities in check or he could end up going home…alone.
  • Keeping busy by working and raising a litter of puppies, Amanda Batula has been doing everything and anything but wedding planning. With only a few weeks until the big day, her pre-wedding glow is dulled by her and Kyle’s continuous fighting and drama. Amanda is soon faced with the toughest decision of her life… either walk down the aisle or call off the engagement for good.
  • Carl Radke has become the best version of himself after a difficult summer last year.  His career is thriving and he is focusing on his physical and mental health by working out and meditating daily. Excited to explore a whole new world of sober dating with hopes of settling down, Carl has multiple potential romantic connections throughout the summer. Will he fall in love or fall apart?
  • Feeling like she was working too much and not having much control over her life, Danielle Olivera quit her corporate job to take a big risk, not only financially but personally. Although she and boyfriend Robert are still going strong, they have been finding it hard to put their relationship first and this summer could be what makes or breaks them.
  • After living in Georgia her entire life, Ciara Miller has applied for her New York nursing license and found an apartment in the city, but soon finds herself homesick. She has been dating a few different guys in New York, but is faced with a difficult decision when a love interest from her past visits the house.
  • Finally moved on from Ciara, Luke Gulbranson wants to have a summer filled with fun…and romance. No stranger to love-triangles, Luke finds himself getting pulled into different directions throughout the Summer and once again has his fair share of drama.
  • New to the Hamptons, but no stranger to this group of friends, Andrea Denver is excited to spend the summer with Paige. Soon after entering the house, he learns that she might have something romantically going on with someone he considered to be a close friend. And although his first instinct has always been to play the field, Andrea is determined more than ever to find the right girl to bring home to Italy.
  • Mya Allen, a restaurant consultant who runs a cookie business on the side, likes to keep things sweet. After breaking up with her long-term fiancé during quarantine, Mya joins her friend Paige for a summer she’ll never forget. She is taking her time to find her next man and wants to have fun and let loose…And what better place than in the Hamptons?
  • Born in Hong Kong, Alex Wach relocated to the United States as a child, and has lived in New York since he was 12. As a fitness instructor, Alex’s priorities include eating healthy, working out and looking good. Will he be able to keep up with this party crew?

New Series F/ Cam Jordan on Police Reform

NFL Media will debut a four-part docuseries featuring New Orleans Saints All-Pro and team captain Cam Jordan and his community partnership with Crescent City Corps, a New Orleans-based nonprofit that equips police officers with leadership development, racial equity and community engagement training so they can work alongside citizens to build a more just, safe, and inclusive city. Police-community relations are a core pillar of Inspire Change, the NFL’s social justice initiative, which showcases the collaborative efforts of players, owners, and the League to create positive change in communities across the country and ensure that equal opportunity becomes a reality for all.

The series will air exclusively on NFL Network and NFL.com, beginning on Thursday, Nov. 11 and run for four weeks. New episodes will debut during NFL Network’s TNF First Look hosted by Andrew Siciliano which airs from 3-5 p.m. ET live from the site of Thursday Night Football games. Extended episodes will follow each Friday on NFL.com. The series preview is available HERE.

“Last summer I reached out to the Mayor’s office asking how I can get involved in a real, meaningful way,” said Saints star Cam Jordan. “Over the last six months the officers of Crescent City Corps have been training diligently, and I am excited to have NFL Media help us in sharing this innovative program with fans. I have always believed in developing initiatives to create a positive change. I strongly believe that if we can help the officers in this program understand and engage with our city, my city’s, most challenging issues better, while also working toward a more just and safe New Orleans–then I am all in.”

Crescent City Corps began its Anti-Racism and Community Engagement Training Program for New Orleans police officers in 2019. While the program was put on hold due to COVID-19, Jordan announced his partnership with the organization in December 2020, with his God Iz Love Foundation donating $120,000 to fund the expansion of the program into its current second class and committed to educating 80 New Orleans Police Department officers to bridge the gap between the community and the police.

“Coming off of the events of last year, where so many from across all walks of life, of all ages, of all races spoke out against social injustice and racial inequality, a recurring question that arose as the summer turned to the fall was ‘What happens next?’” said Anthony Smith, Original Content Lead, Entertainment & Initiatives at NFL Media. “The work that Cam Jordan, Crescent City Corps, and others like them are doing is what happens next. When we at NFL Media were presented with the opportunity to share Cam and CCC’s story with our audience, we immediately said ‘yes.’”

The four-part docuseries will chronicle Jordan’s experience working with Crescent City Corps and captures his introduction to and the progression of his connection with the fellows as they go through the program which includes 80 hours of intensive training and dialogue on topics spanning leadership, racial equality, and trauma-informed policing. Local community organizations also engage the officers in critical conversations to help the NOPD understand what citizens want from law enforcement and to create a productive dialogue to reimagine what public safety could look like in New Orleans.

“Cam Jordan has been a pillar in the New Orleans community during his entire career with the Saints, and we are thrilled about his commitment to making change in police-community relations,” said Anna Isaacson, NFL Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility.

Over the last three years, more than $160 million in grants have been awarded to social justice nonprofit organizations as part of Inspire Change, including over 1,500 grants awarded to current and former NFL players who are doing philanthropic work to ensure that access to opportunity is a reality for all and to create progress across four key areas: education, economic advancement, police and community relations, and criminal justice reform.

The series is executive produced by Cam Jordan, Anthony Smith and Angela Ellis with Chelsea Stark-Jones, Matt Bourgeois, Rebecca Otto (Wasserman), and Brent Godfrey (Crescent City Corps) acting as producers.

Million Dollar Listing: Ryan’s Renovation

BRAVO GETS TO WORK WITH FOUR-EPISODE LIMITED SERIES “MILLION DOLLAR LISTING: RYAN’S RENOVATION” ON JUNE 3RD AT 10:15PM ET/PT

Bravo brings Greek traditions to Brooklyn in the new limited series Million Dollar Listing: Ryan’s Renovation premiering Thursday, June 3 at 10:15pm ET/PT. After purchasing a multi-million-dollar townhouse for their expanding family, Ryan Serhant and wife, Emilia, gut the newly acquired 7,900 square foot home to create the home of their dreams with enough room for their big Greek family. In each episode, viewers will see the transformation of the constantly evolving townhouse, with more than a few hiccups along the away.

While the vision for the vast, five-floor property started as a home for daughter Zena to grow up in, it’s expanded into an inn for the couples’ extended family. Embracing Emilia’s very large Greek family, they are building out the basement level as a suite for Ryan’s mother-in-law…but with mom comes dad, sister, brother, and the rest of the family. Since everyone wants a room, everyone wants their opinions heard. With so many voices chiming in, the Greek chorus starts to sound like chaos.

In a renovation of this magnitude, there are always bumps and curveballs, including COVID-postponements, elevator installations, questioned decisions, and millions spent over budget. In an empty, concrete shell of a property, can Ryan see a forever home to grow old in, or will the chaotic, expensive construction make an unexpected multi-million dollar offer worth considering?

Watch a sneak peak right here

Million Dollar Listing: Ryan’s Renovation is produced by World of Wonder with Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey, Tom Campbell, Nick Prescott and Kevin Maynard serving as Executive Producers.

Tickets Go on Sale to the Public on March 16, 2021, for The New York Botanical Garden’s Exclusive Presentation of KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature Featuring New Work by Celebrated Artist Yayoi Kusama

The exhibition, related programs, and accompanying publication reveal Kusama’s lifelong fascination with the natural world and its countless manifestations beginning in her childhood spent in the greenhouses and fields of her family’s seed nursery in Matsumoto, Japan. The exhibition includes works from throughout Kusama’s prolific career and multifaceted practice. By integrating seasonal horticultural displays, KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature further illuminates the power of nature that pervades the artist’s practice and dynamic body of work.

Multiple outdoor installations, including monumental sculptures of flora transform the Garden’s 250-acre landscape and the visitor experience. Her signature polka-dotted organic forms and mesmerizing paintings of plants and flowers are also represented. Recent vivid observations of nature, shown alongside earlier works that have never been publicly exhibited and those that are presented for the first time in the United States, trace Kusama’s connection to the natural world throughout her career.

Among the works created for and debuting in the exhibition are:

  • Flower Obsession (2017/2021), Kusama’s first-ever obliteration greenhouse.
  • Dancing Pumpkin (2020), a monumental sculpture presented on the Haupt Conservatory Lawn.
  • I Want to Fly to the Universe (2020), a 13-foot-high biomorphic form presented in the Visitor Center; and,
  • Infinity Mirrored Room Illusion Inside the Heart(2020), an outdoor installation reflecting its environs.

Spectacular seasonal displays complement the artworks on view, making each visit unique as new plantings, textures, and palettes are introduced. Glorious outdoor displays of tulips and irises in spring give way to dahlias and sunflowers in summer, and masses of pumpkins and autumnal flowers in fall. In and around the Conservatory, Kusama’s plant-inspired polka-dotted sculptures are nestled among meadow grasses, bellflowers, water lilies, and other plantings. Stunning floral presentations bring to life one of Kusama’s paintings on view in the Mertz Library Building through a seasonal progression of violas, salvias, zinnias, and other colorful annuals. In fall, displays of meticulously trained kiku (Japanese for chrysanthemum), one of that country’s most heralded fall-flowering plants) will create a dramatic finale for the Conservatory displays.

KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature guest curator Mika Yoshitake, Ph.D., said, Kusama, cosmic nature is a life force that integrates the terrestrial and celestial orders of the universe from both the micro- and macrocosmic perspectives she investigates in her practice. Her explorations evoke meanings that are both personal and universal. Nature is not only a central source of inspiration, but also integral to the visceral effects of Kusama’s artistic language in which organic growth and the proliferation of life are made ever-present.

In the Garden

On the Conservatory Lawn, visitors encounter the monumental Dancing Pumpkin, a 16-foot-high bronze sculpture painted in black and yellow. Both playful and powerful, it is sited in an immersive landscape of river birches, flowering plants, grasses, and ferns. The setting is inspired by the sculpture itself and the birch forests near Kusama’s childhood home.

Visitors can marvel at the bright, purple-tentacled floral form with a vivid yellow primordial face of I Want to Fly to the Universe in the Visitor Center Reflecting Pool, and then behold Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees (2002/2021), where soaring trees adorned in vibrant red with white polka dots pop in the landscape along Garden Way.

Narcissus Garden (1966/2021), 1,400 stainless steel spheres each nearly 12 inches in diameter, is installed in the 230-foot-long water feature of the Native Plant Garden. The reflective orbs float on the water’s surface, moved by wind and currents, each mirroring the environment around them to captivating effect.

With interior access planned to begin this summer, Kusama’s new Infinity Mirrored Room will operate per New York State and City guidelines for social distancing and visitor safety. The installation, Infinity Mirrored Room Illusion Inside the Heart (2020), responds to natural light through colored glass throughout the day and seasons. Reflecting the seasonality of NYBGߣs landscape, the exterior will be on view with the opening of the exhibition. A separate timed-entry ticket will be required for limited-capacity access.

In the Galleries

In Flower Obsession, visitors may apply coral-colored floral stickers to the furniture and household objects. Over the course of the exhibition, the accumulating stickers will transform the greenhouse. Through works like this, Kusama employs the repeating patterns and forms of flowers to represent the concepts of obliteration, infinity, and eternity.

Three galleries in the Conservatory feature a horticultural celebration of Kusama’s self-proclaimed biophilia. My Soul Blooms Forever (2019), colossal polka-dotted flowers made of stainless steel and painted in dramatic colors, greet visitors under the recently restored dome of the Palms of the World Gallery.

In the Seasonal Exhibition Galleries, the pink-and-gold mosaic Starry Pumpkin (2015) is featured in a woodland garden of foliage and flowers chosen to harmonize with the sculpture’s pink polka dots. Using Kusama’s vibrant painting Alone, Buried in a Flower Garden (2014) as inspiration, NYBG horticulturists have designed a living work of art to mimic the painting’s bold shapes and colors, with plantings changed seasonally. The patchwork of shapes in the painting reads as garden beds seen from above.

In the Conservatory Courtyard Hardy Pool, the exuberantly colored and patterned sculpture Hymn of Life Tulips (2007) depicting outsized, fiberglass flowers are positioned among water lilies and other seasonal aquatic plantings. The Courtyard also features plantings including an array of tulips in spring and colorful annuals in summer that complement the dynamic sculpture on display.

Pumpkins Screaming About Love Beyond Infinity (2017) comprises a glass cube reflecting an infinity of glowing polka-dotted pumpkins within it. The work, one of Kusama’s signature mirrored environments, is installed in the Visitor Center Gallery. Viewed from the outside, the installation changes over time as pumpkins illuminate and then fade to darkness in a meditative choreography. Kusama has said of pumpkins, My pumpkins, beloved of all the plants in the world. When I see pumpkins, I cannot efface the joy of them being my everything, nor the awe I hold them in.

On display in the Library Building, Kusama’s 1945 sketchbook reveals the 16-year-old artist’s keen eye for detail in some 50 drawings capturing the bloom cycle of tree peonies. This work is an early product of a lifelong connection with the natural world that has inspired her practice across mediums. It also portends avant-garde ideas she developed while living in New York City between 1958 and 1973, as a contemporary of Joseph Cornell, Eva Hesse, Donald Judd, and Claes Oldenburg, and continues to explore rigorously today.

The Library Building presentation also features examples of her botanical drawings, works on paper, biomorphic collages, assemblage boxes, sculptures, and paintings on canvas depicting flora and its limitless variety of patterns.

Kusama’s considerable body of performance works is represented in the Ross Gallery by a projection of Walking Piece (ca. 1966/2021), a performance in which Kusama walked the streets of New York City wearing a bright-pink floral kimono and carrying an umbrella decorated with artificial flowers. Art historians have analyzed Walking Piece as a carefully calculated representation of the artist’s ethnicity and gender, one that was intended to demand attention.

From monumental polka-dotted pumpkin sculptures to abstract paintings that resemble cells magnified thousands of times, Kusama’s works suggest the patterns that can be observed all around us. The self-guided Patterns in Nature Tour, featured on the Bloomberg Connects mobile app, examines the visible and microscopic patterns found in nature. Visitors will discover what the patterns of leaf placement, flower petals, and magnified laboratory specimens reveal about what makes species unique as well as how all living things are connected at the genomic level.

Karen Daubmann, Vice President for Exhibitions and Audience Engagement at the Garden, said, “We are delighted to mount this very special exhibition this year, having postponed it in 2020 due to the pandemic. Yayoi Kusama kindly shared a message with us. On March 6, 2021, she wrote, in part, Dancing through our universe are noble souls whose magnificent forms are saturated with mystery. I invite you to explore the endlessly expanding ode to the beauty of love that is my art. We look forward to sharing her singular vision at the nexus of art, nature, and the cosmos at the Garden site uniquely suited for this once-in-a-lifetime presentation.

La Grande Dame by Veuve Clicquot Partnership

NYBG announces its partnership with Veuve Clicquot, the French champagne house with which Yayoi Kusama has previously collaborated. In September 2020, Veuve Clicquot unveiled the results of their latest collaboration Kusama’s exceptional reinterpretation of the newly released La Grande Dame 2012 vintage champagne with her signature polka dot and floral motifs. The floral creation was reprised in My Heart That Blooms in The Darkness of The Night, a sculpture inspired by La Grande Dame champagne honoring Madame Clicquot, an industry visionary. Images of the collaboration are available here.

Following its presentation at NYBG’s annual Spring Gala on June 3, a large-scale version of My Heart That Blooms in The Darkness of The Night will be on view to diners in NYBG’s Hudson Garden Grill through the close of the exhibition on October 31. “We are excited to offer special champagne and food pairings at the Hudson Garden Grill featuring Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame as part of the champagne house’s collaboration with Yayoi Kusama,”said Nelson Siavichay, Chef de Cuisine. “The vintage pairs beautifully with our farm-to-table cuisine and NYBG’s current exhibition showcasing works by Kusama.”

The 250-acre verdant landscape which includes a 50-acre, old-growth forest and the landmark Enid A. Haupt Conservatory support living collections of more than one million plants. Unparalleled resources are also held in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library, the world’s most important botanical and horticultural library with 11 million archival items spanning ten centuries, and William and Lynda Steere Herbarium, the largest in the Western Hemisphere with 7.8 million plant and fungal specimens. Committed to protecting the planet’s biodiversity and natural resources, Garden scientists work on-site in cutting-edge molecular labs and in areas worldwide where biodiversity is most at risk.
