Tick Test – Reduce Lyme Infection

Between global warming and the post-pandemic push to move to the suburbs, there has been a huge uptick in the number of tick-borne illnesses. Lyme, recently dubbed the fastest growing disease in the world, is a major concern primarily in the Northeast but there are a host of other tick-borne illnesses including 15 others such as Borrelia, Powassan, and Alpha-gal Syndrome. Bottom line: reduce the chance of infection by removing ticks fast and safely. Get detailed information, illustrations, and videos about how to check yourself, your family, and your pets for ticks, and how to remove them correctly, at TickEase.com.

1.       Ticks only bite in the summer—False

Ticks are active year-round and found in all 50 states. Nymphal ticks are harder to see and are out in the spring and early summer.  Cold weather does not kill them. They are mostly dormant but have been seen in February thanks to global warming.

2.       Ticks only live in wooded areas, not the beach—False

Ticks also hide in bushes, ground cover, and beach grass.

3.       You must live near deer to find deer ticks—False

Deer are not the only deer hosts. They feed on mice, birds, chipmunks, raccoons, squirrels, birds, and even reptiles. Ticks have been around for millions of years and have infected many food sources.

4.       Ticks jump from trees or fly—False

No, ticks do not jump or fly but they do climb trees and hide in the bark. They usually stay closer to the ground waiting for prey, such as you or your pet.

5.       You can feel a tick bite you—False

Untrue as ticks secrete a numbing agent before they bite. Fewer than 50 percent of Lyme patients recall being bitten.

6.       Ticks can smell blood—False

Ticks can detect carbon dioxide, ammonia in sweat, and heat from potential hosts. Your breath is their favorite scent. No amount of insect repellent can detect you from 50 feet or more away.

7.       Ticks must remain attached to you for 24-36 hours to transmit a disease—False

The length of time a tick stays attached depends on the tick species, tick life stage, and host response to the bite. The bottom line: You want to get rid of a tick as quickly as possible. An infected tick can transmit the deadly Powassan virus in a matter of minutes.

8.       Best way to remove a tick is with a match—False

This is potentially dangerous and painful. Agitating the tick can put you at a higher risk of exposure.  Other popular myths about removing ticks by smothering it with oil, butter, nail polish, nail polish remover, dish detergent, Vaseline, alcohol, or aftershave all pose the same risk as burning.

9.       A tick head borrowed under your skin can transmit disease after you remove the body—False

Ticks don’t have heads. They have barbed mouth parts that can remain in the skin if the entire tick is not removed. These can cause skin inflammation or local infection.

10.   Dispose of an embedded tick by flushing it down the toilet—False

There are several reasons not to flush it. It is best to save the tick and so it can tested if needed, and many states have free testing services.  It’s helpful to know what type of tick bit you and what type of pathogens or parasites it is carrying.

11.   If you get Lyme from a tick, a bullseye rash will appear—False

Less than 50% of Lyme disease patients ever find a bullseye rash or any rash at all. Rashes can present in many different ways. Some are red and some are pink. Some are big and blotchy or spotted.

12.   If your blood test is negative, you have not been infected—False

There’s still no reliable blood test for tick-borne diseases. That’s why it’s so important to be vigilant about checking for ticks and removing them properly if you find one.

Craigslist Safety Tips

Safety Tips for Avoiding the Most Common Craigslist Scams

When you ask people if they’ve heard of Craigslist, the answer is invariable “yes.” Not surprising, as the selling portal is active in more than 70 countries. But what people don’t realize is that craigslist takes in over $1 Billion in revenue each year, but there are only 50 employees in the company! That’s due to the fact that the buyers and sellers on craigslist do all of the work.

But what most people don’t know is people use craigslist to scam others out of merchandise, data and money. Never has “buyer beware” been more important to follow than it has on craigslist. So what are some of the things that you need to watch out for? Let’s look at some of the most common scams.

Big Ticket – Big Scam

If you’re looking to purchase a big-ticket item, like a car or even a house, and the seller doesn’t ask for a credit check before engaging in a transaction, stop! The seller is just trying to get your financial information and will take your money and disappear. Buyer beware on this because without question, this is a scam.

Something to remember: the Internet and social media have the unique identity to mask the identity of the person you’re dealing with, so even though they give you a name or email address, you have to verify that it’s true. Start with Nuwber, an easy-to-use online tool that will verify the true identity of the person you’re communicating with, simply by entering his or her phone number or other pertinent info. Once you’ve received their true identity, if the person whom you’re dealing with is not who they say they are, end all communication immediately. The person is a cybercrook and scam artist and they’re only out to rob you anyway they can.

Here’s another tip: if someone would prefer to call you rather than text or email you, watch out. They want your phone number in order to gain access to additional data and information, so never give out your number. Always use Google Voice to make or receive phone calls, because it lets you use a phone number that is totally different from your own. And always use craigslist’s proxy email to avoid revealing your own.

Avoid Wire Transfers

A sure giveaway to a scam is when the seller asks you to use a wire transfer to pay for merchandise. This provides an opportunity for the cybercrook to steal your financial data or your money without ever sending any merchandise! Avoid wire transfers. If you do want to use PayPal, use the website to get a link – never use one that’s provided to you by the seller. They’ll simply send you to a spoof site where they can access all the account information you enter.

By following these simple tips to protect yourself, you should be able to buy and sell using craigslist without any problems.

Flash Mob Disrupts UN 20,000 Rally For World Law to Save Humanity

A Broadway actor leapt over a barricade to the front of the United Nations Assembly and interrupted the proceedings with a demand for peace and world law to protect human rights for all.

“And if you won’t do it, step aside and a Peoples World Assembly will arise from our own ranks to do it,” shouted actor Garry Davis, a war veteran and former bomber pilot.

UN security forces grabbed Davis, but as they tussled with him, war-hero Robert Sarrazac leapt up on the opposite balcony and shouted in French: “In the name of the people of the world not represented here, I interrupt!”

Other protesters scattered among the audience leapt up to continue the speech: “The nations you represent divide us and lead us to the abyss of total war.”

Delegates were shocked–until it became clear this was a coordinated action. Then many applauded and joined in.

On December 9, outside the UN, 20,000 supporters rallied to demand that world law be passed to protect human rights for all.

The December 9th rally was a historic first, in that it occurred seventy years ago today, and was part of the massive people-power movement which helped trigger the unanimous passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) the very next day: December 10th, 1948.

In a clip released to the press at http://vimeo.com/297521680 one of the protesters, Pierre Bergé, said the interruption of the United Nations General Assembly in Paris was planned and executed by “very famous writers” including Albert Camus.

Bergé called the disruption “a political comedy” and said it was designed to give people hope for a better way to run our world. “We have to dream, because the only way to catch the reality is to dream.”

The hidden history of how one man’s bold action helped spark a massive movement on the eve of this great leap forward for humanity is told in a forthcoming film “The World is My Country.”

Here is an excerpt:

Because this 70th anniversary event is so relevant to the hot-button issues in today’s world, the filmmakers are making a special password-protected preview version available online–for one week only. To sign up for this advance preview click on this link and select “Free Preview.”

Los Angeles area media and others are invited to meet the director at a preview screening of the film December 8th at 6:30 PM at 3916 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City 90230.

For more information about Garry and the passage of the UDHR see the article in the German magazine Spiegel.

Mir Fontane “Bodega” MV

Camden rapper, Mir Fontane kicks off the fall with his new “Bodega” music video, which premiered exclusively with Hypebeast. The Sage English directed visuals were dedicated to Bronx teen, Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz, who tragically lost his life outside of a bodega this past June and sparked a national outcry for legislation to require small businesses to protect children in danger on their property.

Fontane told Hypebeast, “To me, the bodega always represented a hub for the community… but it also embodies the spirit of the hustle and grind. The owner of the bodega is one of the first true businessmen you meet growing up in the hood.” “Bodega” is the second video off of Mir’s latest EP release, Macaroni Tony, after the release of his “New Friends Ft. Kodi Shane” visuals. Be sure to look out for new music from Mir Fontane this winter.

AirHelp’s New Campaign

AirHelp launches a Passenger Rights Awareness Month.

Alarmingly, there has been in increase in the amount of travelers left at airports due to flight disruptions.

According to a survey authorized by AirHelp, 75% of US travelers confirm that they feel uninformed by airlines about their rights.

As a solution, AirHelp launches a Passengers Rights Awareness Month. By this, a platform is created for worldwide travelers to connect with specially-picked global experts and consumer advocates to inform them about their travelers’ rights. Travelers will also receive helpful information if they ever find their flights to be delayed or cancelled, or if they are denied boarding.

Through this, passengers will always find it useful to learn about their rights to protect themselves for future trips.

Along with this change, AirHelp is opening up its social media platforms to travel connoisseurs and passenger rights advocates from all areas of the world.

The implementation of this is because in the U.S., less than 25% of travelers were on a disrupted flight actually filed a claim, and travelers from other countries are also leaving their issues unclaimed. This clearly shows that the EC 261 regulation is not widespread enough and that further actions must be considered as solutions.

“It is crystal clear that air passengers still feel powerless against airlines and many miss out on the compensation they’re owed by not filing a claim. And if airlines will not play their part to inform and educate their passengers, we will,” says Henrik Zillmer, CEO of AirHelp

With the launch of Passenger Rights Awareness Month, Zillmer hopes this will help improve their efforts in informing travelers of their rights.

For delayed or cancelled flights, or even the denial of boarding, passengers may be entitled to financial compensation of up to $700 per person in certain cases. The conditions for this state that the departure airport must be within the EU, or the airline carrier mist be based in the EU and landing  in the EU.

It is important to keep in mind that for situations deemed as “extraordinary circumstances” such as storms or medical emergencies are exempt when it comes to compensating passengers–they do not qualify for flight compensation.

AirHelp is the world’s leading flight compensation company, helping passengers understand their rights and receiving compensation accordingly are why they are here to help. It has helped more than seven million people process airline compensation claims worth nearly $930 million in total. AirHelp offices are available across the world in 30 countries, supports in 16 languages, and employs more than 500 employees globally. They have served well in the past years and continue to serve on for years to continue.

Abu Dhabi x World Ocean Summit 2019

Government of Abu Dhabi Announced as Host of World Ocean Summit 2019.

This year’s World Ocean Summit, held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, has brought together over 500 leaders from the private sector, civil society and government to explore the development of a sustainable ocean economy through innovative financing and technologies as well as bold new efforts to implement the world’s sustainability commitments. It is the largest World Ocean Summit yet, and underscores The Economist Group’s doubling down on this topic, in no small part through announcing the launch of the World Ocean Initiative, an effort that will translate the momentum and focus of the World Ocean Summit into a year-round programme on the ocean that leverages the full capabilities of The Economist Group.

Carrying this momentum forward, The Economist Group is pleased to announce the Government of Abu Dhabi as the host of World Ocean Summit 2019. Abu Dhabi has a close relationship with the ocean, through its history as a centre for pearl diving, its resilient coral reefs and its mangroves sea grass meadows that provide valuable services in the face of climate change.

Bringing the World Ocean Summit to Abu Dhabi presents a unique opportunity to amplify the conversations on the sustainable development of the ocean in the Middle East and the wider region, and equally provides a platform for Abu Dhabi to share its innovative approaches to conservation, and developing a vibrant and sustainable ocean economy, with the rest of the world.

The challenges facing the ocean are global, and the World Ocean Summit 2019, which will be held March 5th-7th, will bring the bold discussions and diverse audiences that characterise the World Ocean Summit into a new part of the world, and host stimulating conversations on the topics of ocean financing, governance and innovation. A key priority for World Ocean Summit 2019 will be to foster greater cooperation and collaboration between different groups, and to serve as a bridge between the development of economic policies and protecting the marine environment. It intends to build a truly global community for the creation of a sustainable ocean economy. Through the World Ocean Initiative, The Economist Group will build a programme of work across these topics and themes throughout 2018 to ensure that we continue to play a role in fostering progress against the global community’s commitments on the ocean.
