This relationship solidifies the company’s firm dedication to sustainability.

Garnica, a world leader in manufacturing premium sustainable plywood is pleased to announce that they have officially joined the United Nations (UN) Global Compact as a part of their commitment to creating a sustainable future. This corporate sustainability initiative is the world’s largest. It supports companies to conduct business responsibly and take strategic actions to advance broader societal goals with an emphasis on collaboration and innovation.

In September 2015, all 193 Member States of the UN adopted a plan called ‘Agenda 2030‘ for achieving a better future: laying out a path to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and protect our planet by 2030. This plan is based upon 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which define the ideal world.

“At Garnica, using environmentally friendly raw materials and supporting sustainability measures is of utmost importance. We are completely aligned with the SDGs defined by the UN Global Compact and have therefore officially joined the movement to contribute to making the world a better place for all. said Pedro Garnica, Garnica’s president.

Hendrick’s Gin saves the Rarest Cucumbers

Hendrick’s, The Gin Famously Infused with Rose and Cucumber, has Scoured the Planet to Find and Cultivate Some of the World’s Most Unusual Cucumbers

Hendrick’s, the world’s most unusual gin, has brought some of the rarest and peculiar cucumbers from around the globe back from the brink of extinction and made them available for the masses. An unprecedented delight to the senses, this noble endeavor will invite lovers of food and drink to satisfy their curiosity and taste a bounty of otherworldly cucumbers via the exclusive Hendrick’s Curious Cucumber Collection from Farmer Jones Farm at The Chef’s Garden, available now for pre-order delivery nationwide at Farmerjonesfarm.com

Hendrick’s Gin and cucumbers have always been and will always be inextricably bound. Since its inception, Hendrick’s has championed all that is curious, unexpected and unique. In fact, the gin began as a rarity itself due to its unusual but delightful infusions of rose, and of course, cucumber. “You could say I have a healthy obsession with cucumbers, they truly are quite fascinating fruits,” said Hendrick’s Master Distiller Ms. Lesley Gracie. “When we were first developing Hendrick’s, experimenting with cucumbers and figuring out how to get that curious cooling sensation into a gin was a big moment in
my career. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing so many diverse and wonderful varieties of cucumber in different parts of the world. The chance to cultivate some of the more peculiar styles on the brink of extinction has been an extremely fun and welcomed challenge.”

Ms. Lesley Gracie worked with Professor Lenore Newman, one of North America’s foremost experts in agriculture, to identify multiple varieties of rare cucumber species scattered across the globe, from the vast African plains to the mist-shrouded foothills of Asia. Through no small effort on the part of Hendrick’s Gin and renowned farm partners, The Chefs Garden (Huron, OH) and MX Morningstar Farm (Hudson, NY), these glorious fruits have been saved from extinction and are ready to share with the world in their freshest, most imbebible forms. “As someone who has devoted my career to the discovery and preservation of rare fruits and vegetables, I can say with conviction that what Hendrick’s has done for these cucumbers is a tremendous scientific accomplishment,” said Newman, PhD & Director of the Food and Agriculture Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley. The author of three books on food, Lenore advises the British Columbia government on
agricultural policy and the impact of climate change on food security. “These seeds represent a microscopic amount of the global cucumber population and without this project, they remained in danger. It’s remarkable to see them restored to such great scale, and it’s such a joy for people to now be able to taste these marvelous fruits.”

The various seeds were sourced from across the globe after months of academic research and meticulously
cultivated in greenhouses across North America and Europe.

The Six Rare Cucumbers

  • The highly curious Cucamelon (Melothria scabra) is cultivated as a minor crop in Mexico and
Central America, and very rarely experienced elsewhere. Flavors are similar to a cucumber, yet
sweeter and citrus-like, with an uncanny exterior resemblance to a mini-watermelon.
  • Particularly unusual in appearance donning a peculiar mix of bright orange & green with
horn-like spikes, the African Horned (Cucumis metuliferus) is a close relative of our beloved
cucumber that primarily grows wild and in local gardens across southern Africa, carrying
delightful notes of melon, kiwi, banana and citrus.
  • The Hmong Red (Cucumis sativus) is grown by the Hmong people in intimate gardens
adorning the mountains of Northern Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar, where upon
maturation, this miraculous fruit transitions in color from a pale green to a golden orange, and
    offers a tart flavor.
  • The Aonaga Jibai (Cucumis sativus), a treasured family gem from the island of Kyushu, Japan,
can only be found in the quaint town of Beppu, where it’s known for its unusually long and
narrow shape and splendidly sweet taste.
  • Only found tucked away in the country of Bhutan, the Gagon Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is
quite distinct – as it matures, it shifts from containing the characteristics of a common cucumber
    to marvelous honeydew.
  • Generally unknown outside of Eastern Europe, the ancient Muromsky Cucumber (Cucumis
sativus) is oddly covered in black spikes and prized for its pleasant scent, crunchy texture, and
    punchy flavor.

Thousands of these peculiar cucumbers have been cultivated globally and are available in the United States via an exclusive Curious Cucumber Collection from Farmer Jones Farm at The Chef’s Garden. With a plethora of culinary and cocktail uses, these atypical yet delicious cucumbers come in a farm-fresh variety pack for $48, with no one box the same based on harvest at the time of order.

Among the first to experiment with these extraordinary fruits, Hendrick’s National Ambassador, Vance Henderson, tasted and tested to his delight in order to create a cocktail experience unlike any on earth. “Experimenting with these rare cucumbers was not only a pleasure, but an exploration in itself and a welcomed creative challenge,” says Henderson. “One of our favorite creations, The Cutecumber Lemonade, is an ode to our popular Hendrick’s Cucumber Lemonade with one-of-a-kind notes of citrus from the Cucamelon that beautifully compliment our delicious and refreshing gin and mixes well with the unusual.”

The Cutecumber Lemonade – Ingredients

  • 1.5 parts Hendrick’s Gin
  • .75 part Fresh Cucamelon Juice, Strained
  • .75 part Fresh Lemon Juice
  • .75 part Simple Syrup
  • Top with Premium Soda Water
  • 1 Cucamelon and 1 Lemon Wheel to Garnish

Method: Combine all ingredients in a highball glass filled with cubed ice and lightly stir. Garnish with 1 whole Cucamelon speared between 1 lemon wheel and serve.

She was appointed as the Master Distiller and went on to spearhead the development of this most unusual gin and is responsible for the creation of all of

Thomson Reuters Foundation x Omidyar Network

The Thomson Reuters Foundation has joined forces with Omidyar Network to document the devastating effects of COVID-19 on millions of people around the globe.

Using photography and journalism, COVID-19: The Bigger Picture aims to tell the stories of those most affected and most vulnerable to the pandemic that has changed the lifestyles of each person on the planet.

Antonio Zappulla, the CEO of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, said, “This pandemic is a global crisis like no other, affecting every person on the planet. The world is grappling daily to understand its scale and severity against an onslaught of information and misinformation. It has never been more critical to lean on the power of journalism excellence to cut through the noise with accurate and impartial storytelling.”

The Thomson Reuters Foundation works to advance media freedom and promote human rights while Omidyar Network is committed to building inclusive and equitable societies. Though the impact has been widespread, the goal of the project is to show how social inequality that existed before the inception of the virus has only been magnified by the spread of the pandemic.

“This virus has devastated lives and livelihoods across the globe. By combining the storytelling capabilities of the Thomson Reuters Foundation with photos from people whose lives have been upended by the pandemic, we will not only see the impacts on everyday life but also the systemic inequalities that brought us to this dire moment,” said Mike Kubzansky, the CEO of Omidyar Network.

COVID-19: The Bigger Picture, consists of two parts. First, a photojournalism competition allows anyone to submit a photo capturing the devastation of the coronavirus. Entrants may submit one photo with the prize being a photojournalism class taught by Thomson Reuters Foundation’s trainers. Photos may be entered beginning August 12th.

The documentation also includes a series of photo essays focusing on the United States. Experienced and decorated journalists will uncover the stories of workers assisting the elderly in Florida, caretakers of children in North Carolina and more. The photoessays will be released over the next three months, and readers can sign up to be notified when each essay is published.

“By capturing individual experiences, The Bigger Picture will document a wider story. It is only then, that we can truly change the narrative,” Zappulla said.

Celebrating Earth Week 2019

Celebrating Earth Week 2019: Thinking Global, Acting Local

While consumers around the world are embracing sustainability and the environment more than just one day a year, Earth Day celebrations this week unify consumers in their efforts to make a positive impact on our planet and act as responsible global citizens. And while being a good global citizen takes center stage during the week of Earth Day, we see consumers taking an active stance on helping the planet throughout the entire year. So how are Americans embracing an eco-friendly mindset in individual cities across the nation?

To find out, we analyzed Nielsen Scarborough data to understand how Americans 18 and older are adopting eco-friendly activities on a regular basis. We looked at an array of market behavior and spending preferences on a designated market area (DMA) basis, including purchasing eco-friendly household cleaning products, driving less, donating money and participating in energy-saving programs.

When it comes to thinking global but acting local, consumers in Seattle/Tacoma, San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose (27%) are the most active buyers of eco-friendly products and services, followed by Boston (22%), and Austin, Portland, and Washington, D.C. (21%).

The West Coast is Most Focused on Buying Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

To keep things clean and eco-friendly, consumers in San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose lead the way in terms of purchasing eco-friendly cleaning products on a regular basis. Seattle/Tacoma came in at a close second, followed by Portland, Ore.

Using Reusable Shopping Bags

While it’s great to purchase eco-friendly products, it often comes with the need for something to carry those purchases home in. The Golden State reigns as the DMA with the most users of cloth and reusable shopping bags. San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose, and San Diego came in first at 79%, followed by Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto at 77% and Los Angeles (74%).

The Golden State is No. 1 in Electronic Recycling

San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose also came in first in electronic recycling of batteries, cell phones, and computers (62%) followed by Syracuse at 57% and Portland, Ore. (55%). Seattle/Tacoma, San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose also ranked high in usage of rechargeable batteries (31%).

Shopping Organic and Local

Organic food buyers are most highly concentrated in San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose (41%), with East and West Coast cities New York and Los Angeles tied at 29%. Local food buyers are most concentrated in Hawaii’s state capital of Honolulu (58%).

Using Eco-Friendly Transportation

When getting around the green way, Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City,  San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose are the leading cities where people drive less and use alternative transportation.

As marketers and advertisers continue to engage eco-conscious consumers, knowing where those consumers live, understanding their habits and what’s important to them, can provide deep insights into how to reach them from an advertiser and merchandiser perspective.

Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa partner

THE NIGHT LEAGUE, USHUAÏA AND HÏ IBIZA PARTNER WITH DANCE FOR 1 METER FOR RAINFOREST CONSERVATION

Leading Ibiza clubs Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa partner with Dance For 1 Meter, the largest conservation initiative in electronic music history, to help combat rainforest deforestation

Today, Ibiza events giants The Night League announce their 2018 partnership with conservation initiative Dance For One Meter (D41M) which will unite the creative spirit of Ibiza with the latest blockchain technology to tackle the global issue of deforestation and proof of conservation. The partnership will allow clubbers attending both Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa to help the cause by simply joining the party and dancing at either club.

When guests attend events at Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa, they will have the opportunity to pay an optional 1€ to reserve and save 1sqm of Rainforest when purchasing tickets online at hiibiza.com. By using Satellite and Google Earth technology, each guest can redeem and zoom into their coordinates on the Cuipo Foundations Rainforest Preserve in Brazil.

The Night League CEO & artistic director Yann Pissenem said: “We’re so proud to be a part of such an important initiative. We launched the partnership last year with Hï Ibiza and we are really excited to be able to expand it to Ushuaïa this year so that more people can get involved. Deforestation is one of the biggest environmental issues affecting the planet and we hope everyone continues the good work this year and donates to this really worthwhile cause.”

Ricardo Porteus from D41M said: “Have fun, save rainforest is the message! By uniting and dancing together we will save and protect an area of rainforest the same size as Ibiza!”

Every second of every minute of every day one football field of Rainforest is lost due to deforestation. 70% of all cancer eliminating medicine properties originate in the Rainforest. Deforestation creates more carbon emissions than any other industry on the planet. The impact on our lives at a global level is serious if action isn’t taken right now. No more talking, it’s time to Dance For One meter and help make a difference.

The Dance For One Meter (D41M) project is founded by Ricardo Porteus and Tom Murray, who had a chance meeting at the Burning Man festival in Nevada where they conceived the potential of how uniting every person attending global festivals and events could make a positive impact on Rainforest protection. By simply having fun whilst saving the Rainforest, one person, one ticket, one meter on mass will generate the biggest environmental initiative in dance music history.

Two Wild Women Expeditions

The trail blazer of women-only travel has created two itineraries where few travel. On five departures in 2018, Wild Women Expeditions immerses women in the physically challenging, poignantly stunning landscape of Newfoundland in the remote northeastern corner of Canada.

Two distinct, week-long adventures engage guests on Newfoundland’s western shore, separated from Quebec by the Gulf of St. Lawrence that eventually pours into the North Atlantic.

This is home turf for Wild Women Expeditions that offers more active travel departures for women only than any other tour operator in the world. The company was founded in Newfoundland and maintains its headquarters here. Owner Jennifer Haddow grew up near Gros Morne National Park where many of the itineraries’ activities take place.

“This is a place of stark ancient beauty, where the ground beneath your feet tells the story of Earth’s geological history. It’s also a place where icebergs stroll up and down coastal waters and where fjords claw their way into the interior,” explained Haddow, noting that few other adventure travel companies offer tours here.

Indigenous peoples predated the Vikings who arrived some 1000 years ago. England first raised a flag on the North American continent in the late 16th century in what came to be called Newfoundland. Fishermen soon discovered some of the Atlantic’s most productive waters here. The park’s Long Range Mountains testify to this once geologically charged world rife with volcanos and glaciers. These mountains are part of the Appalachian chain rising from Georgia through Maine.

“Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is as important to Plate Tectonics Theory as Ecuador’s Galapagos Archipelago is to the Theory of Evolution,” Haddow added. “The challenges of this environment become metaphors for the challenges faced by the women who choose to travel with us.”

Hiking first through a barren landscape, women discover where the peridotite ends and ancient oceanic crust begins. They hike through a boreal forest to the rugged coastline where pillow lava and sea stacks dominate the shore. They move to the rich marine wonderland of Bonne Bay and a landlocked lake before summiting Gros Morne Mountain in a hike of up to 10 hours.

Following are two 2018 Wild Women Expeditions’ itineraries in Newfoundland. Daily challenges reflect the company’s philosophy that women can discover and build on their own inner strengths by mastering hurdles in the safe company of other women.

Newfoundland Gros Morne Multi-Sport Adventure is a seven-day hiking and kayaking expedition in one of the wildest places in Canada. In 2018 there are three departures: July 21-27, Aug. 11-17 and Sept. 8-14. The $2,695 CAD per person rate includes professional local female guides, all meals, six nights shared accommodation in oceanside cabins, fully outfitted sea kayak day trip on Bonne Bay, guided hikes, ground transportation, park pass and Western Brook Pond Fjord boat tour.

Guests walk on rugged trails over the Earth’s mantle that supports little to no vegetation, explore fossil remains, visit an artsy village, kayak in a sheltered fjord, witness Minke whales, eagles, terns, and kingfishers in the bay and on land; caribou, Rock ptarmigan and Arctic hare. There’s also time to relax on a boat tour of a land-locked fjord accessed through bogs and limestone ridges. For trip details see http://wildwomenexpeditions.com/trips/newfoundland-multisport/.

Icebergs and Arts Adventure is an eight-day wilderness immersion with a hefty dollop of culture on two departures in 2018: June 3-10 and July 6-13. The per person rate of $2,695 CAD includes professional female guides; all meals; seven nights shared accommodation in an authentic house and suites, a wilderness lodge and seaside cabins; guided and fully outfitted sea kayak day; guided hikes and interpretive walks in Gros Morne National Park and along the Great Northern Peninsula; Western Brook Pond Fjord boat tour and iceberg and whale watching boat tour; interpretive tour and lunch at the French Shore Museum in Conche; and a visit to L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Viking history comes alive.

At Port aux Choix National Historic Site guests hike to Philips Garden to explore the ancient remains of one of the largest Dorset Paleoeskimo settlements in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. They also visit the Myra Bennett Heritage House, the home of a nurse known along the 200 miles of coast simply as “the nurse.” This remarkable woman brought her life-saving skills to what was then an isolated, rugged Great Northern Peninsula. See: http://wildwomenexpeditions.com/trips/newfoundland/

“Canada is a country designed for adventurers. For women who want it all, Canada delivers the goods,” said Haddow. “We’ve been trailblazing outdoor adventures in Canada for over a quarter of a century. Increasingly women want to feel the freedom of connecting with wild space in its finest form. In Canada are some of the wildest and grandest natural treasures on the planet.”

Wild Women Expeditions’ Canadian programs are prototypes for the baptism-by-wilderness experiences that Haddow’s team arranges in 26 countries this year. These journeys reflect that…

  • Women need opportunities to just be themselves, together;
  • The wilderness helps women connect with elements of their psyche that may be lost in the daily hustle and bustle;
  • Pairing women and wilderness often encourages women beyond their comfort zones, leading to increased confidence;
  • These ingredients can be transformational, perhaps leading to answers to the question that Poet Mary Oliver poses: What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

About :

Founded in 1991, Wild Women Expeditions is the world’s largest women-only travel company. Its initial focus was on canoeing on remote Ontario waters. Through an unwavering focus on Canada, one of the wildest, most pristine countries in the world, Wild Women Expeditions became Canadian experts in a pioneering niche that introduced small groups of women into wilderness settings. Even though the company now hosts guests all over the world, it retains a national focus with more trips and more women-only, backcountry camping adventures in Canada than any other women’s travel company in the world.

Natural Jewels of Costa Rica
10 Days | From USD$5,495
NEW! Green Season Departure: Aug 4 – 13, 2018

In July and August, “green season” is a time of new birth and plentiful transitions among Costa Rica’s lush rainforests, mist-veiled mountains, wild beaches and active volcanoes, containing some of the greatest biodiversity on Earth. Enjoy peak turtle season in Tortuguero, when Pacific green sea turtles settle into their annual nesting pattern. On the new green season departure, Nat Hab makes an extended boat expedition in search of whales, particularly humpbacks, and dolphins during time exploring around Isla del Caño. In Monteverde’s cloud forest, resplendent quetzals and three-wattled bellbirds feed on abundant ripe avocados at this time of year, creating some of the best opportunities to encounter these threatened species in the wild. Nature is especially lively during the green season—the extra moisture tends to animate more birds and mammals in the canopy, as well as frogs, interesting insects and nocturnal wildlife.
