Air pollution is one of the largest health threats facing the world. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) global energy review 2021, global energy carbon emissions are projected to rebound in the post-COVID era to grow by 4.8%. 6 Ways to Make Your Kitchen More Sustainable

We hear a lot about sustainability and we know that it’s something that is supposed to be good for us. Yet most of us are not quite sure what it means to be sustainable, or how we can incorporate sustainability into our everyday lives. The good news is that understanding sustainability and making it a priority is not only easy, it is something that everyone can do and feel good about. The kitchen is a great place to start for those who want to make some healthy green changes in their lives.

“It’s not difficult for people to become more sustainable, especially if they start in the kitchen,” explains Sarah Scott Mitchell, co-owner of Neutrall, a company specializing in sustainable glassware. “It’s really just a matter of knowing some of the different things you can do to live a life that is considered to be more sustainable. The more people know, the easier it becomes.”

Sustainability, according to the United Nations, is defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising our future generations to meet their own needs. Essentially, when you opt for sustainability, you will be making choices that won’t harm the planet in the future. While you want to be able to use the products that you need today, you don’t want to do so at the expense of tomorrow.

The kitchen is a great place to start, because the choices we make that are related to this room in the home is linked to sustainability in a big way. From buying more organic products to creating a compost bin for scraps, there is a lot people can do to help create a greener and more eco-friendly kitchen. Here are 6 ways to make your kitchen more sustainable:

  1. Recycle. Keep a little basket on the counter, or bin in the cupboard, where you can toss items that need to recycled. There are many foods that have packaging that can be recycled. Put it in the bin for convenience, and once that bin is full take it to the garage to dump into the main recycling bin.
  2. Reduce waste. The United State Department of Agriculture reports that food waste is estimated to be 30-40% of the food supply. Think about how often you toss leftovers or find things that have gone bad in the crisper. Reduce the amount of food waste you are creating by only buying what you need, freezing what you can’t use right away, not making more than you need, and giving away leftovers that you otherwise won’t eat.
  3. Buy organic and local. Make an effort to purchase more foods that are organic and made locally, to reduce pollution and the carbon footprint.
  4. Check your dishes. Not all dishes and cookware are made sustainably. Some have traveled thousands of miles to reach America, and are made through means that were not environmentally friendly. Opt for items that are more eco friendly, such as the sustainable glasses by Neutrall, which are carbon neutral and made in the USA.

On Monday 8 June, the United Nations will launch its second-ever fully digital rendition of its annual World Oceans Day event in celebration of its 2021 theme, The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods. Produced in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global, presented by Blancpain and supported by La Mer, United Nations World Oceans Day 2021 (UNWOD) will be a day-long event featuring keynote speeches, panels, presentations and musical performances kicked off by the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly, with leading voices including: Sylvia Earle, Gael Garcia Bernal, Alessandra Ambrosio, Jean-Michael Cousteau, Sam Waterston, Nathalie Kelley, Danni Washington, Céline Semaan, Amanda Cerny, and more.

While traditionally an in-person event at the UN Headquarters in New York City, due to COVID-19, UNWOD became fully virtual and open-to-the-public for the first time in 2020. This year’s celebration will again be open to the world by livestream from 10:00AM-5:30PM (EDT) on the United Nations World Oceans Day website and the Oceanic Global website as well, with the content reshared on the social channels.

The youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti is the standard-bearer of the Afrobeat Movement, a role he was literally born to play. He started opening for his dad at age nine and joined the band before he was twelve. He assumed leadership of the band Egypt 80 following his father’s passing in 1997 and has led it ever since.

Along the way, Seun both performed his father’s compositions and also added his own twists to the seminal music, digging deep into various African traditions to reflect the continent’s struggles and cultures. In 2011, Seun recorded From Africa with Fury: Rise, his first album for Knitting Factory Records. Co-produced by Brian Eno and John Reynolds, this live set proved to be his breakthrough, and landed on both Billboard and digital international charts. Today, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80—still retaining three-quarters of the group that played, protested, and were arrested with his father—hopes to return to touring the globe relentlessly, reclaiming their reputation for playing multi-hour shows as heavy on group improvisation as they are on composition. His latest recording, Black Times, received a Grammy® nomination in 2018; he joined Knitting Factory Management’s artist roster in March of this year.

10 Foreign Films with the Most Unforgettable Love Stories

I have two loves – literature and film. The most powerful love stories jump off the pages or off the screen, narrating different types of love turmoil, journeying through danger and obstacles to find love. The best love stories occur when love triumphs over evil. 

In the past twenty years, I have taught film through my NGO at the United Nations and at New York University. It is a love story that captures my students the most. Their 10 favorite love stories in foreign films deceit different ways of loving, but they all try to overcome these obstacles to find it. Although they may not always get their happy ending, it’s always worth the risk:

1.     JOJO RABBIT – (New Zealand) 2019, director Taika Waititi. During World War ll, ten-year-old Jojo is being brainwashed as a Hitler Youth. Strangely, his mother allows this, for it is her only way to protect him. We see how deeply a mother loves her son as she prepares him to be independent. Simultaneously, the director expresses his love for the future of children to do what’s right.

2.     HONEYLAND – (Republic of Northern Macedonia) 2019, directors Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary and Best Feature Film, this story recreates a Paradise Lost and its destruction by a greedy man. Love for beauty and nature, and the desire to recapture it, is represented by honey – becoming extinct – and man’s inhumanity to lose it.

3.     NEVER LOOK AWAY – (Germany) 2018, director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Based on the life of the famous painter, Gerhard Richter, the director recreates the artist’s search for Truth. It is only through love for Art that the artist can find peace. It is this tumultuous search that pushes him/her to create.

4.     CAPERNAUM – (Lebanon) 2018, director Nadine Labaki. Lost children, abandoned, hungry, and forced to go against their conscience, are victims of war-torn Lebanon and Syria. The director opens her heart by using her hand-held camera to capture how children suffer in their struggle to survive. It is through her love for these children that we understand and want to help. 

5.     FACES PLACES – (France) 2017, directors Agnes Varda and JR. At 89-years-old and one year before her death, famed filmmaker, Agnes Varda embarks on a road trip to show her appreciation to the people of France. As a token of her deep love, she offers them a new type of art – photos of themselves – while she is making a film of their acceptance. Photography mixes with cinematography, the moving image fuses with still art, to show the director’s love for people and give them Art. 

6.     LION – (India/ Australia) 2016, director Garth Davis. The true story of 5-year-old Saroo, who gets lost on a train in India and cannot communicate in a different dialect to return home. He is placed in an orphanage and adopted by a couple from Tasmania, Australia. Twenty-five years later, his obsession to find his biological mother is proof of his filial love.

7.     TONI ERDMANN – (Germany / Romania) 2016, director Maren Ade. A father loves his ambitious, modern daughter and wants to help her understand what happiness and love are. But the generational gap proves to be stronger than his quest. Despite his struggles and sacrifices, she answers when she sings Whitney Houston’s song, “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.”

8.     PHOENIX – (Germany) 2014, director Christian Petzold. Nelly survives World War II because she is obsessed at Auschwitz to be loved again by the man she loves. She does return to him but disfigured, and he does not recognize her. Deceitfully, he schemes to help her survive the traumas of her past. But as she learns the truth, will her love forgive him?

9.     IDA – (Poland) 2013, director Pawel Pawlikowski. Ida embarks on a spiritual journey to choose between a life of love and family, or God and religion. As she voyages toward the answer, she learns about her history and what the material world can offer. But she keeps repeating, “And then?” She realizes it is love for God and the spirit that can offer her the truest love.

10.  CASABLANCA – (USA/ Morocco) 1942, director Michael Curtiz. This is the best love story of all. For those who will see this film for the first time, I am jealous. This is an American movie made in Morocco with an anti-Hollywood ending. It shows and answers what is true love? What we see on the screen is a love that hurts – for all of us. And yet, love must be experienced, and this film must be seen!

Black Male Leaders x Biden

USA Today reported Monday that Black male leaders penned an open letter to presidential candidate Joe Biden to say that he will lose the election if he does not select a Black woman as his running mate.

According to USA Today, the letter came from more than 100 activists, leaders, preachers and celebrities. Some candidates on an unofficial shortlist of possible VPs include Sen. Kamala Harris, Rep. Karen Bass and Susan Rice, the former Ambassador to the United Nations and National Security Advisor during Barack Obama‘s presidency.

The letter also expressed concern that Black women were being unfairly criticized as potential running mates for Biden. USA Today mentions a POLITICO report that said Sen. Chris Dodd criticized Sen. Harris for comments on Biden’s voting record regarding civil rights. The article also mentions a CNBC report saying Biden allies found Harris to be too focused on becoming president herself to hold the vice presidential office.

Signees of the letter included Sean “Diddy” Combs, Charlamagne Tha God and civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, who represented George Floyd’s family.

“We don’t want to choose between the lesser of two evils, and we don’t want to vote for the devil we know versus the devil we don’t because we are tired of voting for devils,” the letter said.

The New York Times reported Monday that Biden’s VP selection committee has been disbanded and that the only thing left was a decision from Biden, also calling the pick “imminent.”

The New York Times also said Biden’s campaign has a virtual event planned to introduce the vice presidential candidate, and the event is sponsored by Women for Biden.

Coronavirus Awareness Through Art

Graphic designers, illustrators and all artists alike unite against the Coronavirus pandemic with creative messages of hope and safety. Open calls for creatives were presented by the United Nations, Amplifier, and others back in April for innovative designs and infographics. The Erase Covid community was formed in light of this as well and established a partnership with MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund  to help raise money for artists and musicians. While the Viral Art Project continues to invite artists via social media to submit Coronavirus awareness posters. 

The images created express gratitude for our health workers, safety tips, awareness and more throughout the pandemic, highlighting art’s power to connect and communicate. The Smithsonian Magazine reported how creativity continues on the street, as graffiti artists take their Coronavirus art directly to the public with images centered on increasing privatization, surveillance, increasing marginalization, corporatization, housing issues that have become more prevalent during the crisis. This pandemic has not only brought tragedy to our lives as we watch the death toll increase, but it has also illuminated the ineffective and injustice systems in place in this country that affect the poor, minorities and immigrants. With this in mind, we can turn to art to project our voice towards progress.

Art has always been at the forefront of communication and throughout this pandemic, creativity has triumphed, leaving us with hope for the social limitations in place and the future of this pandemic. If you are an artist, or looking to become one, or even just starting a new hobby, turn to this pandemic with a creative eye. Make art on proper hygiene practice, social distancing, social isolation, virtual communication, the importance of masks, social injustice, economic disparity, current politics or any other topic that coronavirus has impacted in our daily lives. Share your art on social media and stay connected, together we can help save lives and move our country forward.

World Bee Day aims to strengthen measures to protect bees, which are vital pollinators for almost 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species and more than 75% of global food crops. Despite their importance in supporting food security and biodiversity, bees are under significant threat worldwide from intensive and monocultural farming practices, land-use change and habitat loss, pesticides and rising temperatures linked to climate change.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is actively involved in helping to safeguard these essential, remarkable and highly vulnerable creatures. In 2017, the company established an Apiary at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex. The Apiary is home to around 250,000 English Honey Bees, which reside in six traditional English-crafted wooden beehives. As well as foraging on the 42-acre Rolls-Royce site, with its half-a-million trees, shrubs and wildflowers, together with eight acres of sedum plants growing on the manufactory’s ‘living roof’, the bees roam over the surrounding 12,000-acre Goodwood Estate, at the heart of the South Downs National Park. Each year, ‘The Rolls-Royce of Honey’ is meticulously hand‑processed by local specialists and served to guests of the marque, including customers commissioning their motor cars in the company’s Atelier suite.

The United Nations designated 20 May as World Bee Day to mark the birthday of Slovenian artist, designer and apiculturist Anton Janša (1734-1773). Considered the father of modern beekeeping, Janša pioneered many methods still in use today. In his seminal treatise A Full Guide to Beekeeping, published posthumously in 1775, he declared: “Amongst all God’s beings there are none so hard working and useful to man with so little attention needed for its keep as the bee.”

Azuri Technologies X Energise Africa Launch UK Crowd Campaign

Azuri Technologies, a leader in pay-as-you-go solar in Africa and crowdfunding platform Energise Africa today announced the latest phase of debt financing from UK impact investors to deliver affordable, clean energy and help solve the energy crisis in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Azuri and Energise Africa collaboration plans to raise £2.5 million for pay-as-you-go-solar and help more than 100,000 off-grid people in Sub-Saharan Africa access clean, affordable energy.

The investment will support low-income families in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia and Tanzania.

More than 600 million people across Africa live without access to electricity – limiting their life chances of achieving economic prosperity and improved quality of life. Universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services is one of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and can only be met with access to sufficient investment.

Crowdfunding has emerged as a powerful way of financing the off-grid solar industry and is leading the way in increasing investor interest in the market.

Through Energise Africa, individuals in the UK can invest from as little as £50 in bonds, issued by solar businesses, to provide clean and affordable energy access, while targeting annual returns of 6%. Capital is at risk and returns are not guaranteed.

Azuri is a leader in pay-as-you-go solar technology and since 2012 has been supplying affordable solar home systems and products to the millions across Africa living off-grid without access to mains electricity.

In 2018, Azuri and Energise Africa raised £1.7 million from hundreds of UK investors to deliver clean, affordable energy products to more than 16,000 families in sub-Saharan Africa.

Flash Mob Disrupts UN 20,000 Rally For World Law to Save Humanity

A Broadway actor leapt over a barricade to the front of the United Nations Assembly and interrupted the proceedings with a demand for peace and world law to protect human rights for all.

“And if you won’t do it, step aside and a Peoples World Assembly will arise from our own ranks to do it,” shouted actor Garry Davis, a war veteran and former bomber pilot.

UN security forces grabbed Davis, but as they tussled with him, war-hero Robert Sarrazac leapt up on the opposite balcony and shouted in French: “In the name of the people of the world not represented here, I interrupt!”

Other protesters scattered among the audience leapt up to continue the speech: “The nations you represent divide us and lead us to the abyss of total war.”

Delegates were shocked–until it became clear this was a coordinated action. Then many applauded and joined in.

On December 9, outside the UN, 20,000 supporters rallied to demand that world law be passed to protect human rights for all.

The December 9th rally was a historic first, in that it occurred seventy years ago today, and was part of the massive people-power movement which helped trigger the unanimous passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) the very next day: December 10th, 1948.

In a clip released to the press at http://vimeo.com/297521680 one of the protesters, Pierre Bergé, said the interruption of the United Nations General Assembly in Paris was planned and executed by “very famous writers” including Albert Camus.

Bergé called the disruption “a political comedy” and said it was designed to give people hope for a better way to run our world. “We have to dream, because the only way to catch the reality is to dream.”

The hidden history of how one man’s bold action helped spark a massive movement on the eve of this great leap forward for humanity is told in a forthcoming film “The World is My Country.”

From advocating for youth literacy programs, empowering women victim to cyberbullying, to providing sustainable food solutions, these women are finding unique and innovative ways to tackle some of society’s most pressing issues for greater good.

This year’s 10 Honorees join a group of 130 extraordinary Women of Worth who have turned their vision into reality. As a result of L’Oréal Paris’ support over the past 13 years, Women of Worth have gone on to receive national recognition from The White House, United Nations, and were awarded Presidential service medals. Past Honorees impacted national and local legislation mandating free sepsis education in schools, private insurers to cover the costs of diagnostic assessments for autism and required food service businesses to recycle their waste oil. Through their collective power, Women of Worth have gone on to provide resources to more than 78,000 homeless women in need across the country, funded nearly 50 childhood cancer research grants and rescued thousands of adults and children living in abusive situations.

Selected by a distinguished panel of judges, the 2018 L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Honorees were chosen from thousands of nominees for their unwavering commitment, drive and desire to better the lives of those around them.  In addition to receiving $10,000 to support her charitable cause, each 2018 L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Honoree will be supported by national paid media, receive educational and training opportunities and a platform to tell her story on a national scale. Starting today, the public is invited to support the Women of Worth by voting for one woman to become this year’s National Honoree, who will receive an additional $25,000 to support her cause for a total of $35,000.

MEET THE 2018 WOMEN OF WORTH HONOREES

• Shreya Mantha – Charlotte, N.C.; Founder,  Foundation For Girls, a youth-led social venture that endeavors to change the life trajectory for at-risk girls and youth through programs in financial wellness, leadership, digital literacy and health and well-being.

• Alisha Zhao – Portland, Ore.; Founder, Kids First Project, a non-profit that brings programs and services to youth who are homeless and living in shelters.

• Hannah Dehradunwala – New York, N.Y.: Founder of New York-based Transfernation, which provides a platform for companies and corporate hospitality groups to donate extra food through on-demand pickups. The excess food is then delivered to community-based organizations that feed hungry and food insecure New Yorkers.

• Genevieve Chase – Sun Valley, Idaho.; Founder, American Women Veterans, is focused on raising awareness of women’s contributions to the military and giving female veterans a place to connect and advocate on behalf of military women and veterans.

• Dr. Holly Jacobs – Coral Gables, Fla.; Founder, Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, a non-profit that serves thousands of victims of cyber sexual assault around the world and advocates for technological, social and legal innovation to fight the offense.

• Jennifer Maddox – Chicago, Ill.; Police Officer and Founder, Future Ties, a non-profit organization that helps young people and families on the South Side of Chicago become the best version of themselves by providing life skills training, mentoring, academic support, field trips, conflict resolution, resume building, community volunteerism and workshops.

• Laura Reiss – Boca Raton, Fla.; Founder, The Samaritan365 Foundation and Kindness Matters Movement. The Kindness Matters movement educates and inspires children about the importance of being grateful for who they are, showing kindness to themselves and others, and the many different ways that they can give back so they can make a positive impact within their own communities and the world.

• Christy Silva, – Thorndale, Pa.; Founder, Aidan’s Heart Foundation, a non-profit that is committed to providing awareness, education and support to create heart-safe communities for youth regarding the prevention and response to Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

• Betty Mohlenbrock – San Diego, Calif.; Founder, Reading Legacies, an organization committed to empowering children and youth in underserved, low-income areas and/or those who have incarcerated parents or family members through intergenerational shared-reading experiences.

• Carolyn Keller – Miami, Fla.; Founder, EBeauty Community, a non-profit that supports women undergoing treatment for cancer through a wig exchange program.
