10 Foreign Films with the Most Unforgettable Love Stories

I have two loves – literature and film. The most powerful love stories jump off the pages or off the screen, narrating different types of love turmoil, journeying through danger and obstacles to find love. The best love stories occur when love triumphs over evil. 

In the past twenty years, I have taught film through my NGO at the United Nations and at New York University. It is a love story that captures my students the most. Their 10 favorite love stories in foreign films deceit different ways of loving, but they all try to overcome these obstacles to find it. Although they may not always get their happy ending, it’s always worth the risk:

1.     JOJO RABBIT – (New Zealand) 2019, director Taika Waititi. During World War ll, ten-year-old Jojo is being brainwashed as a Hitler Youth. Strangely, his mother allows this, for it is her only way to protect him. We see how deeply a mother loves her son as she prepares him to be independent. Simultaneously, the director expresses his love for the future of children to do what’s right.

2.     HONEYLAND – (Republic of Northern Macedonia) 2019, directors Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary and Best Feature Film, this story recreates a Paradise Lost and its destruction by a greedy man. Love for beauty and nature, and the desire to recapture it, is represented by honey – becoming extinct – and man’s inhumanity to lose it.

3.     NEVER LOOK AWAY – (Germany) 2018, director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Based on the life of the famous painter, Gerhard Richter, the director recreates the artist’s search for Truth. It is only through love for Art that the artist can find peace. It is this tumultuous search that pushes him/her to create.

4.     CAPERNAUM – (Lebanon) 2018, director Nadine Labaki. Lost children, abandoned, hungry, and forced to go against their conscience, are victims of war-torn Lebanon and Syria. The director opens her heart by using her hand-held camera to capture how children suffer in their struggle to survive. It is through her love for these children that we understand and want to help. 

5.     FACES PLACES – (France) 2017, directors Agnes Varda and JR. At 89-years-old and one year before her death, famed filmmaker, Agnes Varda embarks on a road trip to show her appreciation to the people of France. As a token of her deep love, she offers them a new type of art – photos of themselves – while she is making a film of their acceptance. Photography mixes with cinematography, the moving image fuses with still art, to show the director’s love for people and give them Art. 

6.     LION – (India/ Australia) 2016, director Garth Davis. The true story of 5-year-old Saroo, who gets lost on a train in India and cannot communicate in a different dialect to return home. He is placed in an orphanage and adopted by a couple from Tasmania, Australia. Twenty-five years later, his obsession to find his biological mother is proof of his filial love.

7.     TONI ERDMANN – (Germany / Romania) 2016, director Maren Ade. A father loves his ambitious, modern daughter and wants to help her understand what happiness and love are. But the generational gap proves to be stronger than his quest. Despite his struggles and sacrifices, she answers when she sings Whitney Houston’s song, “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.”

8.     PHOENIX – (Germany) 2014, director Christian Petzold. Nelly survives World War II because she is obsessed at Auschwitz to be loved again by the man she loves. She does return to him but disfigured, and he does not recognize her. Deceitfully, he schemes to help her survive the traumas of her past. But as she learns the truth, will her love forgive him?

9.     IDA – (Poland) 2013, director Pawel Pawlikowski. Ida embarks on a spiritual journey to choose between a life of love and family, or God and religion. As she voyages toward the answer, she learns about her history and what the material world can offer. But she keeps repeating, “And then?” She realizes it is love for God and the spirit that can offer her the truest love.

10.  CASABLANCA – (USA/ Morocco) 1942, director Michael Curtiz. This is the best love story of all. For those who will see this film for the first time, I am jealous. This is an American movie made in Morocco with an anti-Hollywood ending. It shows and answers what is true love? What we see on the screen is a love that hurts – for all of us. And yet, love must be experienced, and this film must be seen!

ISCHIA FILM FESTIVAL 2018

The XVI edition of the Campania island festival opens with Gabriele Salvatores and his diptych of the invisible boy. But it will only be the beginning.

Oscar winner Gabriele Salvatores will open the XVI Ischia Film Festival. A great start for the event that sees a very rich program unravel from June 30th to July 7th. The Mediterranean director is the Italian author who has most explored the genres of cinematography, and will tell the audience of Ischia his constant desire to change. He will do this by presenting The Invisible Boy and The Invisible Boy – Second Generation, his diptych dedicated to the adventures of a young superhero.

Diversity, courage, even sound unconsciousness. These are some of the key words that characterize this Ischia Film Festival 2018, built magnificently by the artistic directors Michelangelo Messina and Boris Sollazzo and that will develop through the one hundred and thirteen selected films, including thirty-three previews, including eight world titles. Important numbers, as are the thirty countries that these works represent, from Burkina Faso to the Dominican Republic, passing through Iran, Turkey and Italy. Many of these works will compete for the prizes of the five official competitions: feature films, short films, documentaries, Location Negata and Scenari Campani, the latter promoted to a competitive section thanks to the support of BPER Banca. Others will be the Best Of this year and this edition, and will be accompanied by directors and actors who have made this year of Italian cinema very special. The list of guests who will parade on the red carpet of the Aragonese Castle is very long. Beyond Salvatores, Alessandro Aronadio and Edoardo Leo, director and interpreter of Io c’è, are expected for the opening night of 30 June. Leonardo Di Costanzo, who with his L’intrusa is a fresh winner of the Golden Globe. Anna Valle, who will accompany the imperfect age. And then Manetti Bros, Fabio De Luigi, Roberta Torre, Guglielmo Poggi, Renato Carpentieri, Fabrizio Gifuni, Claudia Gerini, Giulia Michelini, Vinicio Marchioni, Nicola Giuliano, Alessandro Rak, Federico Buffa, Sandra Milo, Carlo Delle Piane, Caterina Murino, Caterina Shulha, Lillo Petrollo, The Jackal, Laura Bispuri, Massimiliano Gallo, Nicola Nocella, Bruno Oliviero, Berardo Carboni, Matilda De Angelis, Concita De Gregorio, Antonello Piroso, Fabio De Caro, Gigione, Milena Mancini, Daniele Vicari, Nicola Guaglianone, Pippo Mezzapesa, Yvonne Sciò, Michela Andreozzi, Massimiliano Vado, Giancarlo Fontana, Giuseppe G. Stasi.
And then great authors who will receive the right tribute. Gabriele Muccino, Carlo Verdone, Peter Greenaway and, for his seventy years of career, Carlo Delle Piane, extraordinary actor in our history of cinema.

They will all meet at the Terrace which will host the aperitifs with the stars, before the evening’s program on the five screens of the festival. Programming enriched with two great Italian premieres. On July 1st I, God and Bin Laden, crazy comedy with Nicolas Cage directed by Larry Charles, the man behind Borat (in Italian cinemas from July 27th distributed by Koch Media). July 4th will be the turn of Gringo, who will arrive in Italy with the title Cannabis: budding scammers (Vision Distribution), black comedy with Charlize Theron. Speaking of charm and talent, there is plenty of it in Ocean’s 8, scheduled for July 3 for the second Italian screening. And this year there will be the international convention on Cineturismo, Friday 6 July, in the presence of the Director-General Cinema Nicola Borrelli. An appointment now traditional, strongly desired by the founder of the festival Michelangelo Messina, to take stock of a sector that is now a central reality in our cinema system.

As already stated, Oscar winner Gabriele Salvatores will open the XVI Ischia Film Festival. The director of the Mediterranean will present The Invisible Boy and The Invisible Boy – Second Generation, his diptych dedicated to the adventures of a young superhero. In perfect contemporaneity, at 8:45 pm, Alessandro Aronadio will tell the public the genesis of Io c’è, a mystical and earthly comedy, a return to Ischia for the winner of the best director award last year. The program of the Cathedral of the Assumption is completed with the doc in competition Eu Sunt Hercules, a curious trip to the most popular spa resort in Romania. Also at 8:45 pm, Leonardo Di Costanzo will present at La casa del sole The intruder, fresh winner of the Golden Globe for best film. Following the Israeli doc in competition The Island, set in the French hospital in East Jerusalem St. Louis. At the Bourbon Prison we will find Anna Valle who will introduce the film that opens the feature film competition, L’imperfetta age, followed by Revenir, a story of migrants that inaugurates the Location Negata section.

Let’s Go Sunshine

The Kooks are set to release their long-awaited fifth studio album, Let’s Go Sunshine, on August 31 via Lonely Cat / AWAL Recordings. The album is brash and bold with songs that mix melancholy and euphoria. The band has released two new songs off the album, No Pressure and All The Time and will embark on a sold- out US tour beginning May 21 in Boston, MA at the House of Blues and wrap June 7 in Los Angeles, CA at The Wiltern. Discussing the process behind creating the album, lead singer Luke says: This one was about defining who we are, we were asking the questions. It was a fractured start, we went into the studio in 2015 continuing down the path we set out on our last studio album Listen and discovered it wasn’t what we wanted to make and wasn’t really The Kooks. So, we scrapped it and started again. I really went on a mission to write the best songs I’d ever written before bringing them to the band, I stewed over every word. It had to be our Rubber Soul, Lola, Definitely Maybe. Proper British lineage. I came from a dark place at the start had a lotta heartbreak and then falling in love in the middle of the album, the lyrics reflect that. From Fractured and Dazed to No Pressure. It’s gotta be our most exciting album, and it should get you dancing.

The Kooks started their career with a bang in 2006 with their unstoppable debut Inside In/Inside Out, which went five times platinum at the end of last year. The four-piece band have continued to go from strength to strength. With three more studio albums including a Best of, the band have acquired over 1 billion streams worldwide and embarked on a number of massive world tours including their forthcoming sold-out US tour. With awards and critical acclaim under their belts, they’ve maintained a steady ascent to the top, constantly growing in popularity throughout the last decade.
