TOBi x Juls – Black Joy is Resistance

Brampton’s own, TOBi signs with Same Plate Entertainment/RCA Records along with releasing a new single, “Dollas and Cents.” The groovy and soulful bop sonically highlights Black joy as a form of resistance. Produced by the UKs Afrobeat go-to, Juls, the pair showcase their diverse diasporic lineage and the magic created when working together.

Juls is one of my favorite producers right now. We linked up at the end of last year and the chemistry was instant! This song is really bridging that diaspora connection, Nigeria to Ghana to UK to Canada. It’s a beautiful thing to tap into our African roots musically,” says TOBi

In April 2020, TOBi released STILL + a deluxe version of his debut album which explored themes of vulnerability, post traumatic growth, self-reflection and masculinity of his time immigrating from Nigeria to Canada. STILL + added two new singles: “Holiday” produced by !llmind as well as “Paid,” followed by the City Blues Remix featuring The Game; “180 Remix” featuring Kemba and the “24” remix featuring all Torontonians SHAD, Haviah Mighty, Jazz Cartier and Ejji Smith. The project has a combined total of 17M streams across all streaming platforms. In January 2020, Complex Magazine voted TOBi as a top artist to watch.

We cannot be more pleased with how TOBi has developed as an artist and are incredibly supportive of his endeavors, says Jonathan Master, SVP, RCA Records /President, Same Plate Entertainment.  Over the past year it has become obvious that his music and brand have an international reach and we are excited about partnering with RCA to actualize the global vision.”

2019 would prove to be an impactful year for the 26 year old Nigerian-Canadian, having his single “City Blues,” premiering with Zane Lowe and Paper Magazine; performing to a sold out crowd in his hometown of Toronto, being featured on The Game’s Born 2 Rap album in “Carmen Electra,” Party Pupils “One Two Things” and Big Gigantic’s “Supergiant.” He continued the momentum performing an original song, “Beige” on the international COLORS platform, having his single, “Ride” featured in the 2019 season of HBO’s Ballers as well as teaming up with Soulection’s Sango in bouncy single, “Faces.” Celebrities like Keri Hilson, Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Foxx and everyone’s favorite Uncle Snoop called TOBi the voice of the culture and of the youth.

“If you’ve logged onto Twitter or swiped through your Instagram at any point this summer, you’ve definitely seen a post declaring it’s a hot girl summer. The now-ubiquitous phrase, a call to live your most confident and unapologetic life, was coined in the early months of the season by Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion.” – TIME MAGAZINE

“Her power lies directly in her self-confidence, honesty, and unmitigated desire to dominate-and not just when it comes to life itself; these qualities pour through her music.” – COMPLEX

“Her music is unapologetically Southern, with her thick Houston accent bouncing effortlessly over sensual and bare trap beats, allowing her lyricism and delivery to shine through.” –ROLLING STONE

“If you don’t know the name Megan Thee Stallion, you will soon: she’s one of the fastest rising rappers and finds herself rooted in a pop culture moment that’s all about the yeehaw agenda, country-trap and sex-positive messaging.” – PASTE

If one thing is clear, Megan Thee Stallion owns Summer 2019! The Houston based MC and cultural icon, Megan Thee Stallion, continues her hot girl hot streak today with the release of new single, “Hot Girl Summer” feat. Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. The single boasts production from hip-hop icon Juicy J and features a sample from the hit City Girls’ song “Act Up.” The track is named after the biggest cultural phenomenon of 2019, established by Megan, known as #HOTGIRLSUMMER. The phrase and viral meme not only encompasses everything Megan stands for but has also become a rallying cry for men and women around the world and is catapulting Megan into a household name.

When explaining #HOTGIRLSUMMER Megan states, “it’s just about women and men being unapologetically them, just having a good-ass time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody gotta say about it.”

Megan has had a monumental year that includes this week’s digital cover of PAPER Magazine, a print cover of The FADER’s Summer issue, being named as one of XXL Magazine’s 2019 Freshman, a late-night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and multiple radio hits such as “Cash Shit” and “Big Ole Freak.” Her critically-acclaimed project Fever has been praised by the likes of Rolling Stone, The Fader, XXL, Billboard, Pitchfork, Paper, and more.

Beyond being a successful rapper, Megan is currently a college student, environmental activist, philanthropist, Chance the Rapper’s occasional dietary consultant, and life coach for the world at large. Megan has hosted beauty pageants that award scholarships to “hotties” who also happen to be students, organized the first “Hottie Beach Clean Up” in Los Angeles, and still has time to regularly spread the word of hot girl summer on social media. With each move she makes she continues to set herself apart as the most unique, inspirational, and driven artist out right now, so it’s no wonder she can count Kylie Jenner, Drake, Jada Pinkett Smith, Nicki Minaj, etc. as some of her fans.

Due to climate change, hot girl summer will be continuing well into the Fall when Megan joins Meek Mill and Future for their North American Legendary Nights Tour with YG and Mustard (select tour dates below)., but for now she shows no signs of slowing down. Stay tuned for more news as #HOTGIRLSUMMER is far from over!

JAX AND MARTIN SOLVEIG ANNOUNCE COLLABORATIVE PROJECT EUROPA

JAX’S HEADLINING NORTH AMERICAN TOUR KICKS OFF NEXT MONTH WITH STOPS IN CHICAGO, NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES AND MORE

Europa have today unleashed their debut single ‘All Day And Night’, featuring white-hot US singer Madison Beer. Europa is Jax Jones and Martin Solveig: two friends who also just so happen to be multi-platinum artists (with over 4 billion combined streams), pushing each other to investigate musical avenues they’d never explore on their own.

Europa is club-focused pop music and pop-focused club music. Europa is friendship. Europa is a larger-than-life explosion of unexpected combinations, total freedom, unexpected twists and bridges not walls. Europa is the phrase ‘stronger together’ brought to life in vivid colours.

Born out of a mutual admiration and cemented by a hug given by Martin after Jax’s set in Ibiza, the pair’s collaboration has been a long time coming. It was only after Solveig made the Eurostar trip to Jax’s London studio that they realized that they had something special and the spirit of Europa started to take shape: ‘’for the first-ever Europa session, Martin came in and played a song with a cheeky sax riff in it.’’ Jax adds ‘’He looked at me as if to say: ‘This is a bit taboo, but we could try it.’ And then I said: ‘Well if we’re doing that, how about TRANCE?”

One delight of the genre-agnostic Europa outlook is that it’s truly a project without hard borders, and with US singer/songwriter Madison Beer, who was recognized by Billboard on its 2018 ‘21 Under 21’ roster of the most promising young talents in music, contributing vocals to chart-ready walloper All Day And Night, Europa is also a celebration of frictionless relationships with the rest of the world.  “To have Madison on our first track is great. She has an undeniable truth in her vocal that we both really like and since launching her career she’s become an influential voice of her generation,” Martin comments. Late last year Madison released ‘Hurts Like Hell’, which continues to climb the charts and was described by Complex Magazine as her “biggest track to date.” The song is just a glimpse of what’s to come from her highly-anticipated upcoming debut studio album this summer. Future singles will pair Europa with further still-under-wraps vocalists; they’ll be complemented in Europa’s live shows by a raft of club-ready cuts bursting with spontaneity and openness.

“A huge common point for us is that we want people to have fun,” Jax and Martin explain. “Europa has allowed both of us to step out from what everybody else might consider reasonable. Music doesn’t have to be reasonable. You might even say it shouldn’t be.”

The announcement of Europa follows an impressive start to 2019 for London’s Jax Jones. A second BRIT Award nomination in a row came in the wake of his latest Top 10 collaboration – the groove-fueled earworm ‘Play’ ft. Years & Years. He plays his biggest headline show to date at London’s Roundhouse on 6th April, before heading to America for a landmark nine date tour.

Next month, Jax will embark on a headlining tour of North America. Kicking off on April 18 in Washington, D.C., the 10-date run wraps up on May 3 in Los Angeles at The Roxy. See full list of tour dates below.

360 MAGAZINE, Reebok, r58, complexcon

ComplexCon 2018

By Krishan Narsinghani

For the third annual year, ComplexCon takes over the greater LA area. Set in Long Beach, California, major brands and celebrities flooded their convention center to witness spectacular musical acts, speakers, brands and art. Over the two days, 360 Magazine visited various booths – Puma, Champion, Reebok, Pink Dolphin, 1800 Tequila, Cadillac and more. Reebok’s exclusive ComplexCon shoe, the R58 stunted vibrant colors and introduced all three logos shown for the first time.

Takashi Murakami, contemporary artist on the host committee, sprinkled his aesthetics across the summit (in addition to a collaboration with Drake’s OVO). 1800 Tequila partnered with artist Adam Lucas and streetwear designer Nicky Diamonds for custom-made vintage denim jackets which were raffled at this year’s program. Attendees waiting in line for the McDonald’s installation were treated with Mcnuggets and fries before choosing patches to press onto free backpacks and shirts.

Recording artist Tinashe was a 360 favorite. The urban singer performed hits “Company” and “2 On.” Other performances included Lil Baby, Nav and T-Pain while the crowd also bopped to headliners Rae Sremmurd and Future. Duo Sremmurd surprised fans with a special appearance from rapper Tyga.

ComplexCon(versations) topics revolved around today’s thought on politics, culture, fashion and music. Billboard producer of the decade, Pharrell Williams was a host due to his creative sense on the latest pop culture trends. Tommy Hilfiger spoke on his relationships with Hip-Hop and the connections between music and fashion. Jaden Smith and Yara Shahidi discussed growth out of chaos and how youth should address political issues. Rapper and icon, Nas, spoke on the behind-the-scenes of film, “Belly” and how it changed Hip-Hop and Hollywood.

Reebok x ComplexCon

Today, Reebok unveiled the first sneaker in their highly anticipated limited edition, R58 capsule collection with the release of the Aztrek R58, which was available only at ComplexCon.

The series, which encompasses three of Reebok’s key sneakers, nods to the brand’s heritage as well as the grit and attitude of their co-founders — encouraging wearers to be unafraid and push the limits beyond the conventional. The Aztrek R58 ($120) also nods to the brand’s 90s heritage as the original off-road runner and features shades of black, yellow and red with all three Reebok logos artfully placed throughout.

To celebrate the shoe’s debut, Swae Lee (Rae Sremmurd) stopped by the Reebok booth and got a custom tattoo from artist Miryam. Brand partner Trevor Andrew also stopped by.

In partnership with basketball legend Allen Iverson, Reebok also debuted the long-awaited follow-up to the Answer XIV, the Iverson Legacy. Featuring an entirely new design, the sneaker is the first collaboration between the two in four years and pays tribute to Iverson’s life and career. Championing his legacy both on and off the courts, the Legacy features design elements from his first five Reebok models and reinterprets them for today. Fans of Iverson will recognize details like the ghillie lacing system, iconic I3 jewel logo and woven heel tab from the Question, Answer I, Answer II, Answer III, Answer IV.

Officially launching November 17 on Reebok.com for $160, Allen Iverson made an appearance at the Reebok booth to officially unveil the sneaker. Along with the black/white colorway, a custom version from sneakerhead and former Complex editor, Russ Bengtson was offered as an exclusive for ComplexCon attendees. Bengtson’s shoe, which nod’s to Iverson’s unprecedented legacy, is inspired by classic Iverson models as well as his various tattoos — featuring a bold, red and camo pattern throughout. The red leather nods to the Question and Answer I, while the multiple patches bring in a lot of other Iverson-themed graphics, an easy way to let people personalize their own pairs.
