Au/Ra – Moon River Cover

Following the release of her single “Ideas” earlier this year and recent feature on Jax Jones’ track “i miss u,” Au/Ra has shared her cover of “Moon River,” which is available now via Columbia Records. Listen HERE.

Originally performed by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the song was written by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer and has been covered by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Louis Armstrong, Frank Ocean and more. Au/Ra has added her unique take on the track, which has a dusky and ethereal edge that is displayed through the visualizer accompanying the track. Watch HERE.

Au/Ra says: “I’ve always loved this song, especially the version sung by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do my own rendition of. During quarantine I thought ‘why not give it a try?’ It was something I just wanted to do for fun with my dad, but we ended up liking it so much that we wanted to make it an actual release for listeners.”

Ibiza-born and Antigua-raised songwriter Au/Ra explores the challenges of being a modern-day teenager, writing music that touches on the issues today’s younger generation face on a daily basis, such as anxiety, communicating in an always online world and having to always show off your best self. Her single before “Ideas” was “Ghost” with Alan Walker, which was part of the Death Standing soundtrack and has been streamed over 32 million times on Spotify alone. “Panic Room,” her Platinum selling hit, was remixed by CamelPhat and stayed in the Top 40 for 9 weeks, amassing 122M streams on Spotify. She was recently featured on Jax Jones’ single “i miss u,” which she performed alongside him on Little Mix’s show The Search and was playlisted at Radio 1, Capitol and Kiss FM, achieving almost 18M streams so far. Watch a live version of the track HERE.

An undercurrent of most of Au/Ra’s deeply visual and evocative lyrics is a sense of escapism, influenced by her fandom of anime and fantasy. Growing up devouring Studio Ghibli films, she’s always loved to disappear into the soft-edged, uncanny world of Miyazaki animations, and uses similar designs to flesh out the visual world of her music. With her lovingly made outsider-pop, Au/Ra is providing a similar kind of space in her song writing: one where misfits feel at home and where the listener gets to peer for a minute through the lens of an artist who has simultaneously grown up outside the system, but who speaks with the zeitgeist of her generation.

Look out for more new music from Au/Ra coming soon!

Jay Gwuapo – Lost Files

Today, 20-year-old Brooklyn drill rapper Jay Gwuapo releases a new track and visual for the deeply personal “Lost Files,” which is a track recorded as a letter to his late friends Pop Smoke and KJ Balla following their deaths earlier this year. After being in a dark place grieving their losses, Gwuapo turned to music for expression and healing. Along with the track, he shares the accompanying video via From Nothing Records/Polo Grounds Music/RCA Records. Click HERE to watch/listen.

Last week Guwapo returned with the release of “Black Mask” ft. Pop Smoke. The track is special to the rising rapper as it features one of his best childhood friends, the late Pop Smoke.. “Black Mask” is the only time the two had collaborated, but Pop credited Jay for encouraging him to pursue a career in rap. Along with “Black Mask” Gwuapo also released three additional tracks “Intro,” “Smoke Season Freestyle” and “Dangerous.” These four tracks honor and pay tribute to Pop as well as KJ Balla, who was a frequent collaborator, labelmate and friend of Gwuapo that was tragically killed earlier this year. ABOUT JAY GWUAPO

Brooklyn’s long been a hotbed for the latest and greatest in rap talent, and Jay Gwuapo is the borough’s next rising star in the drill scene. The East New York native is just 20 years old, having picked up rap as a career two years ago—but he’s already making moves that artists with years on him have yet to accomplish. With a series of buzz-generating street singles and debut mixtape under his belt, Gwuapo’s talent and hybridized musical style will surely only gain more recognition to come.

Gwuapo started pursuing rap in earnest, pumping out unreleased tracks that started making noise in the NYC rap scene and eventually teaming up with Russ and K. Balla’s From Nothing record label. “Downbad” from 2018 marked his proper debut single, featuring chilly production and Gwuapo’s now-trademarked “R&B-drill” sound. Then came the languid, melodic “Drip Sauce,” a collab with fellow Brooklynite KJ Balla.

Since then, Gwuapo’s dropped a few more choice tracks, including “Steppin’ Out” and the grim, serious “Well Explained”. Eventually word got around to star-making label Polo Grounds Music, who’s B. Jacques took particular interest in helping Gwuapo take his career and talent to the next level. “A lot of people were reaching out, but no one connected with me like my son B,” he enthuses. “The love felt different from what I felt from nobody else.”

In 2019, Gwuapo announced his signing to Polo Grounds Music/RCA Records and released his debut project, From Nothing Pt. 1 which featured collaborations with label mate Calboy as well as Lil Tjay, Don Q and KJ Balla.

Buzzing Brampton-raised, TOBi drops another unapologetic soulful single, produced by Alex Goose in “Made Me Everything,” and announces the upcoming ELEMENTS project due out on October 14th . The uplifting and motivational track begins with a Charles Moose Amos & Tony Milen sample followed by a funky yet playful bassline.

This is the first song that Alex Goose produced for me and we have so much more in the chamber. That soulful energy with a contemporary touch is what my music is about, says TOBi. I’m bringing that feeling back for the kids to experience. It’s been a crazy year collectively and adding our personal lives into the mix makes it more complex. Then, we have the reopening of racial wounds in North America. It’s heavy stuff, so we create joy and find ways to smile and thrive through the pain. We are resilient. We got this.”

TOBi reconnected with acclaimed director Kit Weyman (24 Remix) to capture Toronto’s community essence. Together they weaved images of youthful laughter, dance and genuine moments of joy emphasizing the power of being a community.

We got the whole block out for this video. Shoutout to Director Kit for being an anchor in that regard. I had some of my childhood homies in there, the dance community, the Toronto film community, real people I’ve met. This video shoot was one of the best days I’ve had this year. Everyone showed their talent and simply enjoyed life. If that doesn’t motivate you I don’t know what will. The reactions throughout the video aren’t scripted, those moments are real and spontaneous. From the basketball scene to the backflip, the kids were losing it in real time. It was magical,” says TOBi.

Recently the rising star announced his partnership with Same Plate Entertainment/RCA Records, along with the release of the Juls produced, “Dollas and Cents.” The pair showcased their diverse diasporic lineage and the magic created when working together.

In April 2020, TOBi released STILL +  a deluxe version of his debut album which explored themes of vulnerability, post traumatic growth, self-reflection and masculinity of his time immigrating from Nigeria to Canada.  STILL + added two new singles: “Holiday” produced by !llmind as well as  “Paid,” followed by the City Blues Remix featuring The Game; “180 Remix” featuring Kemba and the “24” remix featuring all Torontonians SHADHaviah MightyJazz Cartier and Ejji Smith. The project has a combined total of 17M streams across all streaming platforms. In January 2020, Complex Magazine voted TOBi as a top artist to watch.

Baby Keem – hooligan and sons & critics freestyle

LISTEN AND WATCH THE VISUAL HERE
Today, Baby Keem releases two new songs titled ‘hooligan’ and ‘sons & critics freestyle,’ with a striking visual for ‘hooligan’ directed by Jake Schreier and filmed in Los Angeles. Listen to both tracks and watch the visual here.

The tracks precede a new project from the nineteen-year old artist dropping soon. ‘hooligan’ and ‘sons & critics freestyle’ are the first release since Baby Keem’s 2019 album ‘Die for My Bitch,’  which earned him critical acclaim including being honored on XXL’s Freshman List.

The tracks are released on pgLang, in partnership with Columbia Records. Baby Keem is the first artist to partner with pgLang, a new multi-lingual, at service company founded by Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free, which launched in March 2020. A visual mission statement titled ‘welcome to pgLang’ starring Baby Keem can be seen here.

Toosii – Poetic Pain

Today, South Coast Music Group’s Toosii announces his new EP Poetic Pain coming this Fall and releases the title track Poetic Pain. Listen HERE. While deeply personal, Toosii wrote the smooth and soulful track during a spontaneous livestream session with fans.

Toosii recalls, “I was on live with the fans and they liked the beat I was playing, so I had them tell me what the beat made them feel, and we made the song from there.”

The official video, directed by NORATCHETSS, finds Toosii penning a love letter to the woman who shattered his heart and reminiscing about the special moments they shared. View HERE.

Like nearly all of his music to date, Poetic Pain was self-recorded at Toosii’s home in Raleigh, NC a purposely solitary approach he considers essential to his self-expression. “I really just love making music, so all I ever do is record,” he says.

Last week, Toosii released Love Cycle (with Summer Walker). Listen HERE. HotNewHipHop said, “Toosii and Summer Walker make a great team on Love Cycle, a perfect song for a mood playlist.” Love Cycle, one of the most popular tracks from Toosii’s Platinum Heart (Deluxe), has amassed nearly 35 million combined global streams to date.

Platinum Heart (Deluxe) charted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums tally and entered the Billboard 200 in June. With over 200 million combined global streams to date across its 20 songs, Toosii shot into the top 10 of Rolling Stone’s Breakthrough 25 chart for July, which tracks the fastest-rising artists of the month.

In the months following the mixtape’s release, Toosii has released a string of accompanying videos, including Stuck Inside Mercedez Love Cycle, which is the director’s cut of the Mercedez and Love Cycle videos that Toosii co-directed with Edgar Esteves, and Reminiscing, plus the official video for a new song, Push Start.

The 20-year-old rapper is an entirely self-driven and strong-minded artist, fiercely dedicated to following his instincts and one-of-a-kind vision. Since signing with South Coast Music Group (the label that catalyzed DaBaby’s rise as one of music’s biggest new stars in recent years), the Syracuse, New York native has won acclaim for his melodic flow and autobiographical storytelling, endlessly demonstrating his willingness to pour unguarded emotion into each song. Flaunt predicted, Toosii is about to take over the rap game. A compelling live performer, Toosii has supported such artists as DaBaby, Summer Walker, Polo G, Moneybagg Yo, Money Man, NBA Young Boy, Yung Bleu, City Girls and more

TheHxliday – Save Me

Rapper-singer-songwriter TheHxliday is ready to make his mark as a hip-hop/pop hybrid artist with his somber emotionally distraught love ballad Save Me. Listen here via Motown Records. At only 18-years-old the rising artist is making waves gaining over 20 streams all on his own. He’s featured on Familiar and Let You Down off Internet Money’s debut album B4 The Storm.

TheHxliday co-produced, mixed, and wrote Save Me. The raw dark-pop record is a deep cry for help fueled by visceral emotion. He belts “And I don’t wanna lose my life. And you’re the one that keeps me tame.” COMPLEX praised Save Me calling it “A beautiful new record from TheHxliday, in which the young artist calls for help to escape the torment of his own thoughts.”

Earlier this year TheHxliday dropped his debut EP Broken Halls, a tease of what’s to come down the line as he continues to refine his sad boy, love sound. Not to mention, he’s championed by the media conglomerate Lyrical Lemonade, who’s founder Cole Bennett shot multiple videos for TheHxliday. TheHxliday is part of the new wave of rock stars who are inspired by the likes of rappers, pop stars, and rock bands of the past. Looking to the future, he’s ready to make it Hxliday SZN with a new project forthcoming.
