ComplexCon is Back!

ComplexCon returns to Long Beach, CA this November 6-7 for two unforgettable days of shopping, performances, drops, food and reconnecting safely.

ComplexCon is the largest pop culture festival and exhibition in the world! A place that brings together music, lifestyle, art, sports, innovation, activism, and education. The two-day festival is the epicenter for tens of thousands of the world’s most active, influential, and engaged individuals. Guests in attendance will be able to shop hundreds of exclusive releases from the most sought after brands such as, Adidas, Kerwin Frosts, and Hello Kitty.

This year’s hosts are J Balvin and Kristen Noel Crawley, and the weekend will close with a live performance by ASAP Rocky

ComplexCon 2021 Recap Day 1

Day 1 was led with in-depth conversations, led by influencers and celebrities, art exhibits, food, brand activations, interactive technology, and much more. The day featured appearances by celebrities such as J Balvin, Lil Yachty and Gunna. Crowds flooded the floor for DJ sets by Zack Bia, Kitty Cash and Siobhan Bell. 

Adidas had an impactful start to the weekend with multiple activations and giveaways on the floor with top brands and talent. Adidas in collaboration with Prada constructed a interactive cube, which they are raffling off 10 pairs of their Adidas x Prada Re-Nylon. The multi-hyphenate talent Kerwin Frost, who has created “Kerwin’s Castle,” had a slew of celebrity appearances and raffle giveaways.

ComplexCon 2021 Recap Day 2

Day two of ComplexCon was nothing short of entertaining. With appearances from former NBA star, Dwayne Wade (at Lining), podcast sessions, a lagoon of food trucks and more. 

Hip-hop artist, Trinidad James, promoted his shoe collection in collaboration with Saucony. His brand Hommewrk is also spotlighted alongside the new crimson painted sneaker. Streetwear brand Babylon hosted a roulette table for attendees to play on in addition to a slot machine and pinwheel for prizes. Hello Kitty seemed to have a large presence at the event with multiple carnival inspired attractions including a ferris wheel perfect for a Fall day.

A$AP Rocky performed his iconic debut album LIVE. LOVE. A$AP for the first time, celebrating ten years since its release, as well as recent hits. With Rihanna cheering him on next to the stage, Rocky closed out the convention reminiscing through his career over the years and climbing a twenty-five foot pillar to top it off.

Pokemon Has Reached 100M in All-Time Sales – Most Valuable Media Franchise Globally

The Pokemon Franchise is celebrating its 25-year anniversary for the entire year of 2021, and what better way to mark the occasion than crossing an important milestone in the franchise’s history. The franchise started as a game but has since expanded into many facets of media and entertainment, making it one of the most recognizable media franchises in the world. According to data presented by Safe Betting Sites, The Pokemon Franchise’s all-time sales have reached $100B making it the most valuable media franchise of all time as of January 2021.

Pokemon – From Game to Media Franchise with All-Time Sales Of $100B

Pokemon, short for its Japanese title of Pocket Monsters, was first released as a game on Nintendo’s handheld console GameBoy in 1996. Soon after, a Manga and Anime centered around the game was released and soon gained a significant amount of popularity. This is a break from the traditional life cycle of popular media brands commonly found in Japan of Animes being turned into games rather than the other way around.

Since then, the franchise has successfully expanded into many other facets of entertainment such as movies and trading cards, creating an entire Pokemon Universe and generating enormous amounts of sales along the way. Pokemon’s $100B all-time sales make it the most valuable media franchise in the world ahead of other icons such as Hello Kitty, Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, and even the entire Star Wars Franchise.

The franchise’s movie adaptation, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (2019), earned the second-highest at the box office out of any video game movie as of March 2021 with gross earnings of $432M.

Nintendo’s Pokemon Games Always Popular – Combined Over 350M Copies Sold

Since the original game launched on the GameBoy in 1996, there have been over 70 titles created by Nintendo for the Pokemon Franchise all amounting to over 350M copies sold. The top eight Nintendo Pokemon games alone combine for over 150M copies sold. Even more impressively a total of 14 different Pokemon titles accomplished the feat of selling 10M copies or more.

Pokemon’s original game from 1996, Pokemon Red/Green/Blue, is the best-selling Pokemon game of all time with over 31M copies sold.

Pokemon Go and Pokemon Home – 2 New Adaptations That Are Hugely Popular

Pokemon Go is a mobile augmented reality (AR) game published and developed in 2016 by Niantic in partnership with Nintendo and the Pokemon Company. The game turned mobile users into real-life Pokemon trainers who can catch Pokemon they encounter in the real world, visualized through AR on a mobile device. In its first month after release, the game had a record-setting 500M downloads. Pokemon Go was also the third-highest grossing mobile game worldwide with $1.2B in estimated player spend.

Pokemon Home was launched in February 2020 and allowed cloud-based storage for users and their items from the Pokemon universe. The app was downloaded almost 12.3M times in 2020 making it the most downloaded Pokemon game that was published in 2020. In Q4 of 2020 alone, there were over 6.4M downloads of Pokemon Home.

Yoshikitty Tops Sanrio Rankings

The final results of the 2020 Sanrio Character Ranking were announced earlier this month and Yoshikitty has defeated Hello Kitty to win #1 in France, Germany, and Brazil, as well as #2 in China.

The Sanrio Character Ranking competition grows more intense every year, and the 2020 event allowed fans from all over the world to vote on a selection of Sanrio’s 80 most-popular characters. Yoshikitty’s massive international support brought the beloved character to #6 worldwide overall, placing in the Top 10 for the fifth straight year in a row. In addition to online voting, other voting methods included purchases at Sanrio shops, which overwhelmed demand for the already-popular Yoshikitty items. Stores sold out immediately, and orders were backed up for months. Even with such a voting handicap, Yoshikitty still won a top position among other iconic characters such as Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, and Pompompurin.

Yoshikitty — based on Yoshiki, rock star, composer and the leader of X Japan and created by the original Hello Kitty designer Yuko Yamaguchi — was born in 2009 as the first Hello Kitty character who is modeled after a real, living person. With more than 500 items on sale, Yoshikitty is associated with many top brands. This year, Yoshikitty also won first place among all 80 characters in the pre-sale of the “Sanrio Character Pedometer”. Because of the award, the decision was made to create the special edition “Yoshikitty Digital Health Meter” just for this character in addition to the “Yoshikitty Pedometer”, with sales starting June 9.

Yoshiki commented, “Thanks to everyone who voted for Yoshikitty. I’m so happy to see the support from fans not just in Japan but also from around the world.” Yoshiki, who composed the official theme song for Hello Kitty, teased fans with the idea that “Maybe I’ll compose a theme song for Yoshikitty to say ‘thank you’ for all the support. Not only that, I would like to continue delivering wonderful music, so that I can give back to everyone as much as possible.”

To celebrate Hello Kitty’s 45th anniversary and the limited-edition #OPIxHelloKittyCollection, we will be hosting a meet & greet with Hello Kitty at the OPI x ghd Nail and Hair Bar inside Bloomingdale’s Flagship on Saturday, December 14th. Celebrations will include Hello Kitty inspired nail and hair services by appointment, treats and giveaways!  

To celebrate the momentous occasion, we will be sharing exclusive gift offerings and giveaways only available between the hours of the event (1:00pm – 5:00pm.) There will be a giveaway for the first 45 guests who purchase a manicure or hair service, in which they will receive a premium Hello Kitty gift inclusive of the OPI Holiday ’19 Nail Lacquer Mini 4-Pack Gift Set, Hello Kitty Water Bottle and Café Cookies.
