Final California State Budget

In response to Governor Jerry Brown signing the final 2018-19 California state budget, Ryan J. Smith, executive director of Ed Trust–West and vice president of Ed Trust, issued the following statement:

Higher Education

“We celebrate the fact that the 2018-19 state budget includes a new Student Centered Funding Formula for community colleges that allocates resources based on student need and incentivizes programs and practices that increase student success and completion. Governor Brown, Chancellor Oakley, and the State Legislature made the right move for college students and Ed Trust–West applauds their leadership in this area. We were proud to stand with the dozens of civil rights, student leadership, and other advocacy organizations that championed this initiative. By funding colleges based not only on how many students they enroll, but also based on student needs and colleges’ success in supporting students, our state has the potential to close equity gaps within our educational institutions. As the new formula takes effect, we look forward to working with key stakeholders to ensure it is implemented with fidelity.

K-12 Education

We appreciate that the final budget includes an increase of $3.7 billion for the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), reaching initial funding targets two years ahead of schedule. The budget also allocates one-time funding for low-performing student groups not already receiving supplemental funding under LCFF, a proposal based on AB 2635, a bill put forth this year by Assemblymember Shirley Weber and featured as one of Ed Trust–West’s eight equity related legislative proposals to watch. In addition, the budget provides funding to improve community engagement in the LCAP process, funding to support school district improvement, and a commitment to take steps to improve school district budget transparency and LCAP accessibility. Ed Trust–West urges state leaders to ensure that the funds generated by our most in-need students are going to programs and services that support their success. We stand ready to help the state develop transparency and accessibility tools that truly meet the needs of local LCFF stakeholders.

This year’s state budget is a step in the right direction. As California elects the next group of state leaders this November, we are eager to continue to fight to ensure that our budget is a reflection of our state’s values and prioritizes students of color and low income students K – college.”

FILA x Truth Seeker

Fashion industry veteran & creative director Hector Estrada has created a limited-edition interpretation of the Mindblower, an iconic FILA sneaker, under the Truth Seeker label, Estrada’s recently launched clothing label which is focused on human-centric design and visual communication. Originally released in 1995, the chunky running shoe is known for its oversized, warped FILA logo.

Estrada has re-imagined the Mindblower, casting it in a neutral, earthy palette. The fashion-forward gray and blue colorway references stones and flowing rivers, inspired by the concept of universal balance. A sock liner features a print of a hypnotic eye, a symbol of sacred geometry.

Louis Colon of FILA says of the collaboration, “We chose Truth Seeker as we appreciate the not just forward but focused point of view of the brand. As we look for partners we set the goal that each partner create something unique and the product is proof of how special this project is.”

Truth Seeker x Fila Mindblower is available at truthseekerbrand.com

FILA’s heritage line of footwear is currently in high demand, and this marks the first re- release of this  design and an opportunity for the brand to introduce this silhouette to a new generation of consumers. For more information about the relaunch of Mindblower, visit filamindblower.com.

XXXTENTACION

Tens of thousands of fans, friends, and family touched by the everlasting light of Jahseh Onfroy a.k.a. XXXTentacion congregated at Florida Panthers Stadium in Sunrise, FL to commemorate his life and celebrate the legacy he built earlier today.

Planned by his mom, the public viewing and fan memorial allowed audiences to pay their respects to the multiplatinum game-changing artist together and do so in harmony. A moving tribute video created by Justin Staple, Quinton Dominguez, and Tyler Benz [Vice/Noisey] played for the capacity crowd during the proceedings as XXXTentacion’s music played inside and out of the stadium. Various celebrity VIPs attended, including Lil Yachty, Ugly God, Denzel Curry, Skai Jackson, Lil Uzi Vert, Adam 22 and more. Fans also left thousands of messages on commutative poster boards. XXXTentacion’s tribute video and images from the memorial can be found below.

This represents the culmination of a week of memorials across the country by fans everywhere. Beyond an outpouring of social media support from Kanye West, Diddy, J. Cole, Big Sean, and more, Academy® Award winner Jamie Foxx took to the stage at the BET Awards to deliver a moving message in remembrance. Longtime friend and collaborator Ski Mask The Slump God donned a mask in honor as further tributes poured in from the ceremony courtesy of actor Christian Keyes, Desiigner, and many others. Meanwhile, Meek Mill sported an XXXTentacion shirt during his much talked-about performance of the new single “Stay Woke.”

At the same time, XXXTentacion’s multiplatinum single “SAD!” from the chart-dominating ? ascended to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as if forever cementing his impact. Leaping from #52 to #1, the song becomes “the first posthumous #1 for a lead soloist since The Notorious B.I.G.’s ‘Mo Money Mo Problems in 1997,” according to Billboard. Eight other tracks hold spots in the Hot 100 such as “Moonlight” at #16, “Changes” at #18, “Jocelyn Flores” at #19, “FK Love” [feat. Trippie Redd] at #28, “Everybody Dies In Their Nightmares” at #42, “The Remedy for a Broke Heart (Why Am I So in Love)” at #58, “Hope” at #80, and “Numb” at #82. At Spotify, “SAD!” crushed Taylor Swift’s record for “Most Streams in a Single Day” and generated over 10.1 million in less than 24 hours.

XXXTentacion remains the voice of his generation, and that voice will live on forever.

NIGOS Release MV for Narcos

Straight off the heels of winning the BET Award as Best Group, superstar multi-platinum hip-hop trio Migos today release the video for their chart-topping song Narcos. This marks Quavo’s directorial debut, with co-direction by Joseph Desrosiers.
WATCH HERE.
Narcos already has more than 153 million streams and was recently performed by the group on Saturday Night Live. Migos take the music on the road this summer on Aubrey and the Three Migos tour with Drake (full dates below).
The GRAMMY-nominated trio of Quavo, Offset and Takeoff released their second consecutive album to land at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart, CULTURE II (Quality Control Music Motown Records / Capitol), in January of 2018. Sunday at the 2018 BET Awards Migos were recognized as the Best Group, the award given to the overall best R&B, hip hop or gospel group who has release an album in the previous or same year. Migos has hit another milestone this year being honored with the ASCAP Vanguard Award from the 31stAnnual ASACAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.
Recently Migos made history by tying The Beatles for the most simultaneous entries on the Billboard Hot 100 song chart among groups (with 14 songs on the chart) according to Nielsen Music. CULTURE II has been streamed over 1 billion times and is RIAA Certified Platinum. Migos is now one of only five rap groups with multiple No. 1 albums. CULTURE II topped the iTunes albums charts in 60 countries and debuted at No. 1 in 62 countries on Apple Music, achieving one of the largest streaming debut weeks in Apple Music’s history.
In a cover story, Rolling Stone said, Migos aren’t big. They’re gigantic. Twenty-six-year-old Offset, his 26-year-old cousin Quavo and Quavo’s 23-year-old nephew Takeoff have transcended hip-hop to become shapers of the culture.
Their blockbuster single MotorSport, featuring Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, earned Double Platinum status in Canada, and RIAA Certified Platinum status in the US. Their second single, Stir Fry, produced by Pharrell Williams, was the official song for NBA’s All-Star weekend. This year alone the group performed on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, graced the covers of Rolling Stone and Complex and was nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

RUF Makes US Debut

The German sports car manufacturer will have a special class at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on Friday, August 24, 2018 and debut its latest CTR alongside the freshly restored legendary 1989 “Yellowbird” CTR #001.

Ruf Automobile GmbH, manufacturer and engineer of bespoke sports cars, will be honored in a special class at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering entitled “The Alois Ruf Reunion”. The event will make the first North American appearance of the new RUF CTR alongside the completely restored RUF 1989 “Yellowbird” CTR #001 owned by an automobile enthusiast, connoisseur and car collector Bruce Meyer.

“The Alois Ruf Reunion” will bring together a handful of notable cars from throughout the marque’s history, reuniting them with Alois and Estonia Ruf on the manicured lawns of The Quail Lodge in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Other RUF cars that will be on display include the CTR Clubsport, CTR2 and RCT.

“When we began building our own automobiles in 1974 it was all for the thrill of the drive,” said Alois Ruf, owner of RUF Automobile GmbH. “We are honored to have been given a special class at The Quail, but we recognize that this is a celebration of RUF owners and their passion for driving as much as it is the RUF brand. RUF is not a car or a company, it’s an all-encompassing experience of which we are just a part. We share this honor with all of the members of the RUF community.”

The 1987 RUF CTR “Yellowbird” took the automotive world by storm when it out-paced every other production car in the world, topping out at an unprecedented 211 mph at the Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany. Along with its top-speed record, the CTR also became the first production car to break the 200-mph barrier. RUF commemorated the 30th anniversary of the “Yellowbird” with the release of the new CTR, an entirely bespoke high performance sports car developed and built in RUF’s Pfaffenhausen, Germany facilities. Among other engineering achievements, the new CTR is the first carbon fiber monocoque production car with a rear-engine layout. The turbo charged RUF is only equipped with minimalistic electronic driving aids, such as ABS and slip-control, resulting in one of the purest driving experiences available in a modern car. Production of the new CTR is expected to begin in late 2018.

The celebration will also include a private event for RUF owners at a separate location during the week. For more information on RUF automobiles, visit the RUF website at ruf-automobile.de/en.

ABOUT RUF AUTOMOBILE GMBH
In 1939, Alois Ruf Sr. first formed his company, AUTORUF, as a general service garage. The company grew and in 1949 Ruf Sr. added a gas station to the company complex. By 1955, Ruf Sr. recognized a need in Germany for a full-size tourist bus and challenged himself to build his own to run this as a separate business. In 1963, the company began specializing in Porsche vehicles, a direction that Alois Ruf Jr. vowed to continue when he assumed ownership of the company in 1974. In the following year, the first RUF-enhanced Porsche model made its debut.

In 1982 RUF has been approved by the German authorities as a car manufacturer in its own right, which meant that RUF cars were identified by their own VIN. In 1987 RUF achieved the approval from NHTSA and EPA in the United States. Now it is still family run by Alois and Estonia Ruf.
