The Audibles – Outrageous

It was recently announced that the single “Outrageous” from musical duo The Audibles was selected as the first track for the 2021-2022 NFL Songs of the Season series. “Outrageous” will air during Thursday Night Football broadcast on FOX featuring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Philadelphia Eagles and will be highlighted across pre-game and in-game broadcasts.

The four-time Grammy nominated duo–Dominic ‘DJ’ Jordan and Jimmy Giannos–have produced songs for top artists including Justin Bieber, Lupe Fiasco, Ty Dolla $ign, Sam Smith and more. The Las Vegas natives have been leading figures in the production of Justin Bieber’s recent hit albums. They produced five songs on Bieber’s “Journals” album and played a significant role in the production of his song “No Pressure” featuring Big Sean. Most recently, they produced Bieber’s hit single “Intentions” in addition to three other tracks on Bieber’s “Changes” album.

Songs of the Season highlights superstars and emerging recording artists of all genres, incorporating their music into game broadcasts throughout the 2021 season. Revenue generated from Songs of the Season will benefit organizations supported by Inspire Change, the NFL’s social justice initiative focused on reducing barriers to opportunity in four priority areas: education, economic advancement, police and community relations, and criminal justice reform.

Songs of the Season debuted during the 2019-2020 season and featured artists such as Blackway, Kelly Rowland, Robin Thicke, Royce Da 5’9″, Lecrae, and SASH. The series showcases musicians that will create and deliver a song to be integrated in all NFL promotions each month during the season.

Call it the ultimate mashup.

The newly announced partnership between Rolling Loud and WWE will see hip-hop’s biggest names performing alongside WWE SmackDown wrestling. This partnership is the first of its kind. No other time in history has seen a collaboration between wrestling and a large-scale music festival.

This is how it’s basically going to go down. On July 23, SmackDown will feature a split FOX broadcast with two matches being held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami (same venue as Rolling Loud) while the rest are at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland.

I’m honestly extremely intrigued by the thought of A$AP ROCKY, Travis Scott, and Post Malone performing in between or alongside a LIVE wrestling match. With that caliber of a lineup, concert-deprived fans, and throw in some of the world’s most entertaining wrestlers? The energy all around is bound to be ELECTRIFYING.

So what does this mean for the future of collaborations between live music and sporting events?

I think the opportunities are endless. But before I go any further, I should clarify that while I am an enthusiast of the virtual space – I don’t foresee in-person gatherings becoming null and void, ever. There’s just something that comes with having human energy together collectively in one space. Let’s explore a few of my ideas.

Most sporting venues also double as concert venues. Could this be the beginning of seeing mega venues that could concurrently host a live music and sporting event? I see this being easily achieved even more specifically in the world of e-sports.

Or even take for example the current format of sporting events. In some capacity, small-scope performances already take place during sporting events i.e. halftime, national anthem singers, etc. Might we start to see longer pre or post-game concerts? To reference a basketball analogy, a 2 for 1? Will we see tours scheduled around team calendars? A league that is primed to do this would be Ice Cube’s Big 3.

Not all people who go to live music and sporting events go to actually listen to music or watch the game. They go to socialize and network. They may possibly have been enticed by promotions or a giveaway. They may simply want to make an impression or maybe they are big fans of an artist or team after all. No matter the circumstance, I think the ultimate draw to such collaborative efforts is the fusion of audiences and the power of sport and music to unite.

As told on WWE.com, “WWE has a rich history of integrating music into all aspects of its brand and collaborating with some of the most celebrated artists in the world. Over the years, world-renowned hip-hop artists including Snoop Dogg, Diddy, Three 6 Mafia, MGK, Wale, and many others have performed at WWE’s biggest events.”

I know that I have a bias but music has always played a very important role in sports and vice versa. I think it was Drake that said “Damn, I swear sports and music are so synonymous. ‘Cause, we want to be them, and they want to be us.”LOL!

I will definitely be tuned in on the 23 to see how this looks like in actuality. I am also eager to see the continuation in the development of how to further collaborate across the music and sports landscapes from the live production and programming standpoint.

Topps National Baseball Card Day

The Topps Company®, the official trading card partner of Major League Baseball, is excited to announce its month-long pop-up truck tour in celebration of Topps National Baseball Card Day on Saturday August 7.

Starting on Friday July 9 in Denver, CO, the Topps Truck will kick off at MLB’s All-Star Week, and then travel to numerous cities stopping at MLB stadiums, hobby shops and local events across the country, finally ending at the Field of Dreams game in Deyersville, IA on August 12. The Topps Truck, wrapped entirely in over 11,000 baseball cards, will travel more than 6,600 miles, bringing baseball fans the ultimate fandom experience. Throughout the month-long journey, the onsite teams in each location will host trivia contests and cornhole games, along with free baseball cards and Topps swag giveaways. Fans are also invited to take a photo in a life-size Topps card frame to become their own card, as well as trade at the mobile Topps Card Wall, a staple activity at Topps events.

“Every year, National Baseball Card Day is a reminder of Topps’ rich heritage and the infectious card collecting hobby that has remained a staple for sports fans and collectors of all ages,” said Emily Kless, Topps Communications Manager. “In 2019, we celebrated National Baseball Card Day with a pop-up Topps Truck in NYC, and this year, as we continue to celebrate Topps’ 70th Anniversary of baseball cards, we wanted to bring our Topps Truck to fans across the states, and celebrate our favorite players, iconic game moments, and more, at MLB stadiums and hobby shops nationwide.”

In addition, Topps is teaming up with FOX to raise awareness of NBCD, and the highly anticipated Field of Dreams game, which will take place in Deyersville, IA on Thursday August 12.

To commemorate the occasion, Topps is also giving away packs of cards in hobby shops across the country in honor of NBCD on Saturday August 7. Consumers can follow the Topps Truck’s journey on social media @Topps, and celebrate using the hashtag #ToppsNBCD.

Black AIDS Institute’s Conversation w/ Billy Porter

Black AIDS Institute (BAI), the nation’s only Black HIV organization focused on ending HIV and stigma in Black communities, released a Juneteenth conversation with celebrity Billy Porter about how his recent HIV disclosure has freed him from shame. This personal story highlights how the intersecting stigmas of being Black, gay, and living with HIV fuel the epidemic among Black Americans and present a tangible barrier to accessing lifesaving HIV prevention and treatment options. Featured as a part of BAI’s Black Voices Matter campaign, which amplifies celebrities who are using their platforms to support the Black HIV movement, this conversation was released on Juneteenth to honor individual Black freedom and inspire healing. He is a recipient of the 2006 USO Merit Award and in 2018 was awarded the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, one of the highest awards the Department of the Army can bestow upon a civilian, in recognition of his significant dedication to our military men and women around the world.

Tasha Smith Directs Fox Pilot

Tasha Smith Tapped as Director for Pilot Episode of Upcoming FOX Series “Our Kind of People” From Producers Karin Gist and Lee Daniels 

Multihyphenate actress, director, producer and coach, Tasha Smith, has been brought on to direct the pilot and second episode of the upcoming Fox drama, “Our Kind of People,” inspired by the book by Laurence Otis Graham and produced by Karin Gist (Star, Mixed-ish) and Lee Daniels (Star, Empire.)  

Magic is something you create, and Showrunner Karin Gist has given new life to the special story that is Our Kind of People,” says Smith. “I am honored and thrilled to bring Karin’s work to life alongside Executive Producer Lee Daniels, who is a wonderful producer and mentor to me.” 

Tasha has been taking the helm as director of several television projects including the upcoming Stars series, “Black Mafia Family,” where she also serves as Executive Producer, directing the pilot along with multiple episodes. She has also worked as director on top-rated series such as ABC’s “Big Sky,” Stars hit drama “P-Valley,” several episodes of Fox’s “911,” and The CW’s “Black Lightning.” Her work as an actress and acting coach have served as the foundation for her understanding and vision of what it takes to tell a story not only in front of the camera, but also behind it.  

Tasha’s work as an acting coach, through her TSAW Actor’s Workshop, has been utilized by numerous luminaries including Mary J. Blige (for her Oscar nominated performance in Mudbound) and most recently with Andra Day on her Golden Globe winning and Oscar nominated performance as Billie Holiday in Hulu’s feature film, The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Tate McRae – Don’t Be Sad

MTV VMA’S Push Best New Artist nominee Tate McRae releases her newest track and music video, “don’t be sad” today via RCA Records (listen/watch here). The track was written by Tate, Larzz Principato (Dua Lipa, Halsey) and Jeremy Dussolliet (Anthony Ramos) and is another step up in showcasing Tate’s personal songwriting abilities.
