DEBATING THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE DRAFT

Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee have proposed a revolutionary reconfiguration of the federal military draft that is aimed at including women in the Selective Service System, according to a release from POLITICO. As the law stands now, all American men must register for the service when they turn 18, although the draft has not actually been enacted in more than 40 years since the Vietnam War. Refusing or failing to register can lead to fines, being denied student financial aid or federal jobs, and even prison time.

In the new proposal – authored by Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Jack Reed of Rhode Island – the language regarding who must enlist at 18 would be expanded to include “all Americans,” not just men.

The conversation around including women in the draft has picked up speed and garnered national attention in the past few years. In June, the National Coalition for Men brought a case to the Supreme Court that challenged the male-only draft, calling it unconstitutional. While the Court declined to hear the case, three Justices—Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer and Brett Kavanaugh—did release a public statement on the topic. The statement argued that the exclusions of women from the draft made little sense when considering how much the military has changed in the past four decades since the Supreme Court first held up the original policy. The tone of the statement was unsure about whether the draft meets the standard of “exceedingly persuasive justification” to discriminate on the basis of gender. The Justices also noted the monumental 2015 decision from the Pentagon to open all military combat roles to women as further evidence.

This hot-topic issue most recently entered Capitol Hill in 2016. At the time, the Senate voted to have the decision become part of the annual defense policy bill; the House Armed Services Committee adopted a similar provision, but eventually scrapped it. As a compromise, an independent commission was formed to study the draft and the pressing question of what role gender plays in it. In March of 2020, the commission published its final report, which backed the idea of requiring women to register for Selective Service.

However, another distinctive school of thought advocates for the abolition of the draft altogether, as opposed to requiring all young people to register regardless of gender. As Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby wrote in his recent piece, Women don’t register for the draft, and men shouldn’t either, “Selective Service has outlived its usefulness. It should be consigned to history. […] Congress shouldn’t just end male-only draft registration. It should end draft registration, period.” Jacoby goes on to argue that the draft is an outdated practice and that an all-volunteer army is far more effective: “Compared with draftees, [those who volunteer for service] work harder, serve longer, perform better, and are more likely to regard their service as a calling, not a compulsion. Their commitment and skill are reflected in the consistent No. 1 ranking of the military as the most trusted institution in America.” This final point is supported by a 2019 Gallup Poll that found that Americans trust the U.S. military more than any other public institution. 

But, of course, there are legitimate issues posed by relying on a solely volunteer force. The All-Volunteer Force Forum (AVF Forum) is a network of military personnel and citizens alike who support some sort of draft being reinstated in order to combat the civil-military gap (a disconnect in views between military and non-military individuals). The AVF Forum cites issues including unsustainable recruiting techniques, a lack of socioeconomic and geographic diversity in the armed forces, and an inability to draw from the largest pool of possible candidates as all being exacerbated by a reliance on volunteerism.

In April, The AVF Forum held a conference to discuss potential amendments to the draft which do not include the complete dissolution of the institution. One solution is as follows:

“The conscription of only 5 to 10 percent of the force from the top 10 percent income tax bracket, [presented] by Marine Corps veteran and author Elliot Ackerman. The logic being that those within reach of the levers of power would be more inclined to limit military involvement if their own children faced drafting and deployment.”

No clear solution was reached at The AVF Forum conference, as the complicated debate continues to rage.

While it is unclear where exactly President Biden stands on the matter, he did share a clarifying quote at the Military Officers Association of America candidate forum in September of 2020 before he assumed the presidency. “The United States does not need a larger military, and we don’t need a draft at this time. […] I would, however, ensure that women are also eligible to register for the Selective Service System so that men and women are treated equally in the event of future conflicts,” said Biden.

The original proposition by the Senate Armed Services Committee is expected to be considered during committee markup this week. However, there will be no official floor action on the bill until at least later this year. 

If the legislation eventually passes, the measure would only go into effect one year after approval.

Earlier this year, BTS became LV house ambassadors and have been advocating for the monogrammed pieces ever since.

The film marks their first big showcase for the brand. Directed by Jeon Gowoon and Park Syeyoung, each member presents a new look designed by Abloh as they navigate through an industrial space filled with Vuitton models, and a seemingly endless maze of staircases. Because this is their first official high-fashion collaboration (previously only with athletic brands such as Puma and Fila), the BTS fanbase ARMY was absolutely geeking out on Twitter.

Thanks to their appearance in Louis Vuitton’s #LVMenFW21 fashion show in Seoul, where members of the group modelled the new collection, social media posts featuring BTS accounted for 9 of the top 10 most engaged fashion-related posts in the past week. BTS-related LV posts generated 5M interactions for the brand in just 7 days, compared to less than 400K mentions for all non-BTS mentions of LV in the same period.

Not to mention, with their ever-growing popularity; BTS bounds onto the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart at #1 with their new single “Permission to Dance.” The boyband supplants itself at the top spot, as their previous single “Butter” falls to #7 after seven consecutive weeks at #1.

The dominant influence of K-Pop is just one of many surprising trends that has changed the way consumers engage with fashion and beauty brands over the past year. The Murder of Fort Hood Soldier, Vanessa Guillen

“How can this happen on a military base? How can this happen while she was on duty? How can this just happen and then let it go under the rug like it was nothing?” These were the words of Mayra Guillen, sister of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, who has been missing for months and is now confirmed dead.  

On April 22nd, Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, a 20-year-old Hispanic Small Arms and Artillery Repairer, went missing. She was last seen alive at a parking lot at squadron headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. For months, Pfc. Guillen’s family held out hope that their beloved was still alive, yet the discovery of remains near the Leon River, north of Austin, has vanquished that hope. While the FBI is still awaiting a positive DNA analysis, the family believes that the remains belong to Vanessa.  

Yet, this story does not begin with her disappearance nor does it end with her death. Prior to her vanishing, Pfc. Guillen, according to her sisters, was having difficulties with sexual harassment while stationed at Fort Hood, outside Killeen, Texas. The attorney representing the family in the case revealed that Guillen had confided to her sisters and several other soldiers that a superior had walked in on her while taking a shower and that he proceeded to sit down and watch her. Other relatives and Pfc. Guillen’s boyfriend have noted on social media that something is “not right” and that Vanessa felt unsafe at the military base.  

However, during a press conference on Thursday, July 2nd, senior special agent for the Fort Hood Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID), Damon Phelps, reported that there was no evidence backing the claim that she had been sexually harassed. He affirmed that “there has been no information — and we have interviewed hundreds of people… There is no credible information about that.” Despite this rebut by CID, family attorney, Natalie Khawam said, in an interview with PEOPLE, that she believes Pfc. Guillens was sexually harassed by Spc. Aaron David Robinson.

Spc. Robinson was the leading suspect in Vanessa Guillen’s disappearance, and as authorities caught up with him on Tuesday evening, he shot himself. It has since been revealed that Robinson was, in fact, responsible for the murder of Pfc. Guillen’s. Guillen’s was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in the armory where she worked, according to the family’s attorney. They made this discovery through an extensive investigation, in which witnesses divulged that they saw Robinson transporting a large box labelled “very heavy in weight.”

Then, after consenting to an examination of his cellphone records, court documents reveal, it was discovered that Robinson made several phone-calls to his girlfriend Cecily Aguilar on the night of Apri 22nd and into the early hours of the April 23rd. After being interviewed multiple times, Aguilar finally told investigators that her boyfriend had murdered Guillen. She also revealed how she and her boyfriend had met up and dismembered Guillen’s body together with a “hatchet or machete type knife” and, after attempting to set her corpse on fire, buried Guillen’s body parts in three different holes. Texas Rangers have since arrested Aguilar and she now faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.  

The issue of sexual harassment within the Army remains a problem in this case, given that Guillen’s family, according to their attorney, claimed that Vanessa was planning on reporting Robinson the day after she was murdered, and had delayed over fear of reprisal and inaction. Yet the Army says there exists no credible evidence that she was sexually harassed before her disappearance, and in a statement from the Fort Hood Press Center, officials said that the criminal investigation “has not found any connection between sexual harassment and Vanessa’s disappearance.” They plan to continue their investigation in light of new revelations. 

Lupe Guillen, another sister of Vanessa’s, told NPR that her sister wanted to be in the military since she was a little girl, “she wanted to be a fighter. She wanted to be a hero. She wanted to be someone in life. … The military failed her.

The family is now pushing for legislation to create an independent agency for soldiers who are victims of sexual harassment and assault.

It has been a year since Vanessa’s body was found and her family members, friends, and fellow military members still have many unanswered questions. While it is assumed that Vanessa’s killer was one of another soldier stationed at Fort Hood in Texas, Aaron Robinson, the army is still investigating. Her fiancé spoke to ABC last week, discussing his anger and frustration at the lack of answers and closure he, her family and friends have. Many are upset with how the Army handled the situation and investigation. Interrogating her friends instead of going after Robinson, who many suspected from the beginning.

Her family now hopes that the “I Am Vanessa Guillen” bill, which will make sexual harassment a crime in military law will be approved and help prevent other soldiers from being harassed while defending their country, and other families from feeling the loss they do.

Two years after 2018’s film Burn The Stage: The Movie, BTS are giving an exclusive look behind the scenes of their 2018-2019 Love Yourself Tour in a sequel documentary titled, Break The Silence: The Movie.

This new film comes after what has been a year of great success for the South Korean group who started off 2020 with the release of their seventh album, Map of the Soul: 7, landing them the No.1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. This was followed by a Grammy Performance of “Seoul Town Road Remix” alongside Lil Nas and others. And just weeks ago, the group’s first entirely English single, “Dynamite”, broke records by becoming the first song by a Kpop group to debut as the number one slot on the Billboard 100 chart. Needless to say, BTS has become a household in Western media.

Break The Silence is a concert film following the boys – comprised of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook – through the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself World Tour which took place in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, São Paulo, London, Seoul, and many more cities from May 4 to October 29, 2019. This stadium tour marked BTS as the first Korean group to perform at Wembley Stadium. According to Billboard, the Love Yourself World Tour ranked No. 3 on the Billboard’s 2019 Year End Top 40 Tours chart with 1.6 million tickets sold and a worldwide gross value of $196.4 million.

On Thursday, September 10, BigHit entertainment released a minute long teaser showcasing the seven members in their remarkable stage outfits with the song “Magic Shop”, from the Love Yourself :Tear album, playing in the background as a moving movie poster ending on the final image of member’s silhouettes on the stage.

BTS Lands First Billboard No.1 with Dynamite

K-Pop titans, BTS, have achieved a new milestone with their summer hit “Dynamite.” Released August 21st, the South Korean group’s first single entirely in English debuted in the number one slot of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. The group’s previously highest charting hit was “ON” which debuted at No. 4 this past March. It is the first song in 57 years to earn an Asian act the #1 spot, and their first time in history an Asian act has debuted at #1.

“Dynamite” continues to rack in accomplishments, having already racked in the biggest digital sales week in the music industry since 2017 and having smashed YouTube’s record of views on a music video in 24 hours with a cool 101.1 million. The hit is a retro inspired, upbeat pop hit, featuring seventies inspired décor and style in its music video.

BTS is comprised of seven members: RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook and debuted seven years ago in their home country of South Korea. Though the group already boasts four number one albums on the Billboard 200 chart, their humble beginnings and time as an underdog in their own country has made this accomplishment that much sweeter to their group and their unflinchingly loyal fanbase, called ARMY. The members admitted the accomplishment brought tears to their eyes, especially when thinking back on their long road to the top.

Though, “Dynamite” is a song in English, the group has repeatedly emphasized that they will continue to focus their music in the Korean language for as long as they are active. The group is credited with helping to popularize K-Pop in the West, paving the way for other enormously popular groups such as Blackpink, NCT, Super M, Stray Kids, and ATEEZ. K-Pop, alongside Spanish music, has been credited with diversifying the American focused music charts. While BTS has undoubtedly faced their share of xenophobia, the success of BTS and “Dynamite” reflect the increasing inclusivity of the music industry.

The group is hot off their performance of their single on Sunday’s VMAs where they claimed three prizes. BTS is currently working on their eighth album, to be released before the end of 2020.

Navy SEAL Gear

Considered by many to be the most rigorous and highly trained military force in the world, Navy SEALs work in sometimes hopeless conditions to carry out special operations. This branch of the military was established by President John F. Kennedy to perform a variety of operations of unconventional warfare. Because of the nature of their work, Navy SEALs use only the best equipment to increase the chances of success and safe returns. Although some of this equipment is top-secret or restricted, many items that are regularly used by Navy SEALs are available to the general public.

Weapons

As a military branch, it’s natural that SEALs carry a variety of weapons. Missions can vary from quiet reconnaissance to explosive takeouts. Because of this, many styles of weapons might be in a SEAL arsenal. Common weapons include carbines or assault rifles, machine guns, concealable handguns, sniper rifles and even missile launchers. In most of the United States, this gear requires a permit to own and many deadly weapons are not available to the general public. One fun way to explore SEAL weaponry without the dangers is to purchase a plastic replica or even to build an accurate model.

Clothing

Clothing is an approachable way to explore Navy SEAL equipment since there aren’t restrictions and these items are less expensive than weapons, vehicles, or special gear. SEALs are equipped with some remarkably effective clothing, including pants and shirts made from durable materials with reinforced stitching. Even items such as socks and belts are specifically constructed for naval activities. If these basic items aren’t interesting enough, try out some tough all-weather military boots or specially-designed Luminox watches. Although some SEAL clothing is specialized for specific applications, much of it is qualified for sea, air and land. Some factors to consider for all these environments include waterproofing or water-resistance, durability through pressure and temperature differences, resistance to abrasion and dust and comfort despite any of these elements.

Vehicles

A collectors item only for the really dedicated, SEAL vehicles are among the most powerful and expensive. One famous item is the SEAL Delivery Vehicle, which is a small submarine that is designed to be as close to undetectable as possible. Some are large enough to hold up to six people, but some missions have been carried out by fewer personnel. Piloting a personal submarine isn’t a practical choice for most civilians, but replicas and models are fun ways to enjoy them anyway. However, a Humvee or desert vehicle might be a more practical collector’s item. These vehicles were designed to replace Jeeps and can be outfitted with a variety of essential equipment. For more fun, try out a Light Tactical All Terrain Vehicle, which can be as small as the average 4-wheeler or a bit larger to hold more people and equipment. Although expensive and not always practical, military vehicles are a great conversation piece.

Other Gear

Although SEAL stands for Sea, Air, Land, the successes of aquatic activities stand out as some of the more unbelievable tasks the SEALs have completed. To safely perform underwater missions, SEALs have to have the best in scuba, wetsuit and water-safe equipment to perform their jobs. SEALs rely on other items as well, though. According to one of the SEALs who participated on the raid that stopped Bin Laden, there are a number of items that SEALs carry with them almost everywhere, including water bottles, small point-and-shoot cameras, bolt cutters, tourniquets or first-aid supplies, helmets, night vision goggles, body armor, knives and multipurpose tools such as Swiss Army Knives. Although they come in handy for life-saving missions, most of these tools have everyday uses as well and are easy to obtain from stores. Even casual shops like My Gift Stop carry these kinds of useful items.

Whether you’re looking to outfit yourself in some of the most effective equipment in the world or you just want a few collector’s pieces, Navy SEAL gear is top of the line. Simple apparel items augment one’s closet with durable options, while equipment and home decor items are both interesting and educational.

BTS’s “Fake Love” MV

K-pop group BTS (Aka Bangtan Sonyeondan, or Bangtan Boys) has broken records with their latest MV reaching an outstanding number of views within just 24 hours. The South Korean group released their MV “Fake Love” as the title track for their Love Yourself: Tear album on May 18 at 6pm KST. Within the first 6 hours of their release, they gained a staggering 14 million+ views. Now after a full 24 hours has passed, the video reached 40,961,289 views, but an official count from Youtube is currently being anticipated. With this number, BTS has set a new record for the highest views of a K-pop MV seen within the first 24 hours.

The seven-member boy group was formed by Big Hit Entertainment and they debuted on June 12, 2013. They have come a long way since then, becoming one of South Korea’s influential celebrities. Pre-orders of their newest album became available on April 18, and they sold an outstanding 1.44 million copies in South Korea within the first 6 days of the pre-order period.
