The Murder of Fort Hood Soldier, Vanessa Guillen

By Emmet McGeown

“How can this happen on a military base? How can this happen while she was on duty? How can this just happen and then let it go under the rug like it was nothing?” These were the words of Mayra Guillen, sister of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, who has been missing for months and is now confirmed dead.

On April 22nd, Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, a 20-year-old Hispanic Small Arms and Artillery Repairer, went missing. She was last seen alive at a parking lot at squadron headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. For months, Pfc. Guillen’s family held out hope that their beloved was still alive, yet the discovery of remains near the Leon River, north of Austin, has vanquished that hope. While the FBI is still awaiting a positive DNA analysis, the family believes that the remains belong to Vanessa.

Yet, this story does not begin with her disappearance nor does it end with her death. Prior to her vanishing, Pfc. Guillen, according to her sisters, was having difficulties with sexual harassment while stationed at Fort Hood, outside Killeen, Texas. The attorney representing the family in the case revealed that Guillen had confided to her sisters and several other soldiers that a superior had walked in on her while taking a shower and that he proceeded to sit down and watch her. Other relatives and Pfc. Guillen’s boyfriend have noted on social media that something is “not right” and that Vanessa felt unsafe at the military base.

However, during a press conference on Thursday, July 2nd, senior special agent for the Fort Hood Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID), Damon Phelps, reported that there was no evidence backing the claim that she had been sexually harassed. He affirmed that “there has been no information — and we have interviewed hundreds of people… There is no credible information about that.” Despite this rebut by CID, family attorney, Natalie Khawam said, in an interview with PEOPLE, that she believes Pfc. Guillens was sexually harassed by Spc. Aaron David Robinson.

Spc. Robinson was the leading suspect in Vanessa Guillen’s disappearance, and as authorities caught up with him on Tuesday evening, he shot himself. It has since been revealed that Robinson was, in fact, responsible for the murder of Pfc. Guillen’s. Guillen’s was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in the armory where she worked, according to the family’s attorney. They made this discovery through an extensive investigation, in which witnesses divulged that they saw Robinson transporting a large box labelled “very heavy in weight.”

Then, after consenting to an examination of his cellphone records, court documents reveal, it was discovered that Robinson made several phone-calls to his girlfriend Cecily Aguilar on the night of Apri 22nd and into the early hours of the April 23rd. After being interviewed multiple times, Aguilar finally told investigators that her boyfriend had murdered Guillen. She also revealed how she and her boyfriend had met up and dismembered Guillen’s body together with a “hatchet or machete type knife” and, after attempting to set her corpse on fire, buried Guillen’s body parts in three different holes. Texas Rangers have since arrested Aguilar and she now faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The issue of sexual harassment within the Army remains a problem in this case, given that Guillen’s family, according to their attorney, claimed that Vanessa was planning on reporting Robinson the day after she was murdered, and had delayed over fear of reprisal and inaction. Yet the Army says there exists no credible evidence that she was sexually harassed before her disappearance, and in a statement from the Fort Hood Press Center, officials said that the criminal investigation “has not found any connection between sexual harassment and Vanessa’s disappearance.” They plan to continue their investigation in light of new revelations.

Lupe Guillen, another sister of Vanessa’s, told NPR that her sister wanted to be in the military since she was a little girl, “she wanted to be a fighter. She wanted to be a hero. She wanted to be someone in life. … The military failed her.

The family is now pushing for legislation to create an independent agency for soldiers who are victims of sexual harassment and assault.

ABOUT ADOPT THE ARTS

In collaboration with well-known artists, entrepreneurs, policy makers and the general public, Adopt the Arts is dedicated to improving the academic performance of every child through the gift of making music and art. ATA is focused on developing strategic relationships with educators, administrators and board members to ensure that most underserved schools in the district are identified and ultimately, helped. Co-founders Abby Berman and Matt Sorum believe that it is morally and ethically incumbent upon the public-at-large to foster the creativity, hopes, dreams and imaginations of our children. To date, ATA has donated more than 1000 instruments to 30 LAUSD schools and fully funded the music program at Rosewood Avenue and Westminster Elementary. Each school has been “adopted” by a celebrity or public figure, exposing children to inspirational people who have worked hard for their successes. The interaction between the children and adoptee creates a sense of responsibility and shared commitment for all of those involved.

ABOUT MOBY

Moby was one of the most important dance music figures of the early ’90s, helping to bring the music to a mainstream audience both in England and in America. Moby fused rapid disco beats with heavy distorted guitars, punk rhythms and detailed productions that drew equally from pop, dance and movie soundtracks. His music differed from both the cool surface textures of ambient music and the hedonistic world of house music. He remained one of the most recognizable figures within techno.

Born Richard Melville Hall, Moby received his nickname as a child, derived from the fact that Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick, is his great-great-grand uncle. Moby has been making music since he was 9 years old. He started out playing classical guitar and then went on to play with seminal Connecticut hardcore punk group the Vatican Commandoes when he was 13. He started DJ’ing after leaving college and was a fixture in the late 80’s New York house and hip-hop scenes.

He released his first single, “Go” in 1991 (listed as one of Rolling Stones’ best records of all time), and has been making albums ever since. His own records have sold more than 20,000,000 copies worldwide, and he has also produced and remixed scores of other artists, including David Bowie, Metallica, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, among others.

He has toured tirelessly, playing well over 3,000 concerts in his career, and has also had his music used in hundreds of different films, including “Heat,” “Any Given Sunday,” “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “The Beach,” among others.

Moby works closely with a variety of different charities, including The Humane Society and The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, and in 2007 he launched Mobygratis, which provides free music for independent film makers. Moby is known for his strong political and religious views and for his animal rights activism.

On March 7, 2019, Adopt the Arts Foundation is honored to welcome Moby as our 2019 ATA Honoree for his contribution to the music and arts industry throughout his lifetime. This will be an amazing night with live performances and special guests.

ABOUT SHEPARD FAIREY

In 1989, while at Rhode Island School of Design studying for his Bachelor of Fine Art in Illustration (which he earned in 1992), Shepard Fairey created the “Andre the Giant has a Posse” sticker that later evolved into the OBEY GIANT art campaign. In 2008, his portrait of then-Democratic candidate Barack Obama became an internationally recognized emblem of hope. Since then, Fairey has painted nearly 100 public murals, become one of the most sought- after and provocative artists in the world, and changed the way people converse about art and view the urban landscape.

HIP HOP + HEALTH

SMART RHYMES

VeganSmart uses music to entertain and educate on benefits of a Vegan lifestyle

In the Hip-Hop industry “beefs” among industry heavy weights are quite common and usually addressed in the studio with a diss track. The brand that has successfully built a bridge between hip-hop and health, VeganSmart, is addressing their “beef” with…well…beef and other factors that lead to diet related illness such as diabetes, hyper tension and heart disease with in a new track titled “Wise Words.”

The single features John Lewis, better known as The Bad Ass Vegan, who drops his dope rhymes, combined with his knowledge, on living a plant-based lifestyle. Lyrics such as “No, it’s not your fault/there’s education out that nobody taught from the time you were born. They got you ready for GMO pork, as a kid when they introduced you to a spork. Man, they’ll put anything together because they know you’ll eat anything they tell ya,” are used not to shame or judge, but encourage people to pay attention to what they are putting in their bodies. Hip-Hop influencers Styles P, DJ Envy, Angela Yee, Lil Cease and even Moby make appearances in the video that accompanies the track.

VeganSmart is focused on addressing nutrition-related chronic diseases in underserved communities through education and by offering plant-based solutions to satisfy hunger and improve overall health. Their efforts to spread this message have been successful thanks to a partnership with rapper Styles P and his chain of Juices for Life juice bars. The team has also garnered support in bringing health education to underserved communities from Kappa Alpha Psi® Fraternity Inc.

“Wise Words” is available for purchase on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Music.

Claude Tellis and Kareem Cook, VeganSmart co-founders and college friends, have always sought to educate and provide consumers with healthy food choices that would prevent them from diet related illness and poor health. They were responsible for having the state of California ban junk food from vending machines in every Los Angeles public high school and middle school. While banning junk foods in schools across LA is a tremendous accomplishment the men were unsatisfied. They wanted a larger platform to help Americans prevent common illnesses that plague the United States. Both Kareem and Claude’s families and many Americans across the country suffer from hypertension and diabetes, diseases that can be prevented or managed primarily based on diet. This passion lead them to launch of VeganSmart, a line of all-in-one, nutritional shakes. Co-developed with Health and Wellness Expert and Partner, John Lewis, the brand continues to motivate other health and wellness advocates.

With no artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors, preservatives, dairy, eggs, gluten or soy, VeganSmart shakes go beyond classic flavors like chocolate and vanilla, with delicious varieties including Wild Berries, Chai, and their newest line, Love is Love that includes flavors like Cookies N’ Cream and Chocolate Raspberry.
