On the heels of his breakout year, Swiss indie rocker Sam Himself – New Yorker by choice,  Fondue Western baritone by trade – prepares to release his debut album, Power Ballads (October 8th). The Brooklyn-based songwriter, performer, and multi-instrumentalist has been sounding the bell for his first LP with a number of singles, most recently “La Paz” and “What Its Worth” which premiered via Under The Radar Magazine and was picked up by KCRWs Morning Becomes Eclectic and KEXPs The Morning Show, among others: as of September 2021, three out of four album singles remain on public and commercial rotation in Germany, France, Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe and the US.

Sam Himself’s full-length debut follows last year’s acclaimed EP Slow Drugs, the artist’s third, which – in addition to the international press, radio airplay, numerous DSP editorial features, and critical praise for the accompanying music videos – earned him the Swiss National Broadcasting Service’s Best Talent Award in 2020 and, in early 2021, a nomination for a Swiss Music Award, the most prestigious national prize of its kind in Sam’s home country.

Power Ballads marks the latest collaboration between Sam and his longtime producer, mixing engineer, and Second Beatle’ Daniel Schlett (The War On Drugs; Iggy Pop), as well as mastering legend Greg Calbi (Bruce Springsteen; David Bowie).

Early last year, Switzerland’s King of Tears Sam Himself was in Europe kicking off his spring tour when the pandemic foiled all live music plans – and Sam’s planned return to Brooklyn, NY, his chosen home of the past decade. Dangerously low on socks, musical equipment, and any real sense of when he’d be able to get back to the United States, Sam ended up staying in his native Switzerland for the remainder of 2020. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, exiled at home, spent those months in limbo writing and recording what would become his debut album, Power Balladswherever he could (including the attic of his mom’s house). When he made it back to New York in early 2021, Sam (after a period of self-quarantine) went straight to producer Daniel Schlett’s Strange Weather Studio in Brooklyn to finalize his new material, building on the recordings he had originally prepared as demos for his album.

Two songs on Power Ballads once again feature Sam’s Slow Drugs bandmates Josh Werner (bass – Ghostface Killah; CocoRosie) and Parker Kindred (drums – Jeff Buckley; Elliott Smith), among them the LP’s focus track The Missing. The work of Benjamin Noti (guitar – Steff La Cheffe) and Georg Dillier (bass – Anna Rossinelli), both members of Sam’s touring band, can also be heard on several tracks.

Beyond their contributions, however, Sam plays most of the instruments on Power Ballads himself, with producer Schlett adding sounds, textures and of course his singular mixing style (as heard recently e.g. on Iggy Pop’s cover of The Velvet Underground’s European Son). This reduced lineup, a consequence of the new practical realities of the pandemic, imbues Power Ballads with a sense of intimacy and artistic autonomy. Synths and programmed drums form the core of most of the album’s by turns minimalist and grand arrangements, while Sam’s signature baritone voice quite literally reaches new heights. Over the course of ten tracks, the artist grapples with the sources and limits of personal power – how much of it is taken for granted; what remains once it’s stripped away – unflinchingly honest and defiantly optimistic on his most vulnerable, most confident work to date.

Sam Himself is set to tour in support of his debut album well into the spring of next year, with some 30+ European dates in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and beyond (US-dates in planning).

Sam Williams, the grandson of country pioneer Hank Williams and son of outlaw legend Hank Jr., is the latest in a long line of American originals, but not here for the sake of tradition or legacy. Writing with a singular voice and style, he fuses gut-wrenching honesty and plainspoken poetics with raw vulnerability and deep empathy for a profound and cinematic sound.

Glasshouse Children was introduced to the world with the release of slow-burning single “The World: Alone” following the sudden death of Sam’s sister Katie, leading Sam to discover a deeper purpose in life. “That song was never slated to be a single,” says Williams, “but I knew no other way to honor Katie’s memory. She was front row at my Opry debut and always my biggest cheerleader. I wrote the track a year before her passing, having no idea I would be detailing a tragedy and the loss of a dream, but the music lives and grows, and I understand now that I was destined to do this and have to carry on.” It was released on what would have been Katie’s 28th birthday.

The album’s title track, “Glasshouse Children,” is an orchestral reflection on how past trauma can shape present strength. The haunting tune was co-written with Ronnie Bowman and The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, and highlights Williams tender, plaintive vocals throughout.

OUTSIDER PROJECT CELEBRATES WORLD-RENOWNED CHICAGO ARTIST HENRY DARGER’S BIRTHDAY

French musician Philippe Cohen Solal found material ripe for musical expression in Chicago-born author and artist Henry Darger’s drawings, paintings, writings, life story and lyrics. The award-winning Cohen Solal drew from Darger’s oeuvre to compose OUTSIDER, an album and transmedia project honoring the renowned outsider artist. In celebration of Darger’s birthday on Monday, April 12, Intuit partners with Cohen Solal and Musee Art Moderne de Paris (MAM) on the launch of OUTSIDER, in which Cohen Solal will present an excerpt from the project live from MAM on the website at noon central time.

In the baroque pop album OUTSIDER, musicians Philippe Cohen Solal, Mike Lindsay, Adam Glover and Hannah Peel turn Darger’s paintings and writings into melodies. The album is available now on streaming platforms and the website an immersive bilingual website featuring music videos and a short film. Releasing in English on Wednesday, April 14, the accompanying bilingual podcast retraces Darger’s story through the testimonies of the people who knew him and studied and exhibited his work. Hear stories from the artist’s former landlord, Kiyoko Lerner, and learn more about the Henry Darger Room Collection, which Cohen Solal used as inspiration, from Intuit President and CEO Debra Kerr.

“It’s exciting to see Darger’s influence in new mediums. Philippe has long been inspired by both seeing the artworks in person and his visit to the Henry Darger Room at Intuit. As Darger is Intuit’s most closely associated artist and many people’s entry to the genre of outsider art, I’m always interested to see new creativity catalyzed by his story and body of work,” says Kerr. “In this case, Philippe and his colleagues have treated Henry’s legacy with the utmost respect, honor and care. Darger’s story is shrouded in mystery, and I am happy when new interpretations stay true to what we know and can uncover with rigorous scholarship. I send my warm congratulations.”

Although Darger and his mysterious artwork have been of interest to the art world for several decades now, the outsider artist lived life in obscurity as a hospital janitor. Lerner’s husband, Nathan, discovered Darger’s work shortly before the artist’s death in 1972, and the couple shared it with outsider art enthusiasts and scholars who became fascinated by him over time.

As the pandemic keeps people removed from one another, an exploration of the notably isolated Darger is especially relevant. Cohen Solal’s interest in and repurposing of Darger’s work into new artforms speak to the universality and timeless emotional rawness of the late creator’s life and work. Celebrate Darger’s legacy at this commemorative program that is sure to delight and inspire fans around the world.

BOSLEN RELEASES MIND-BENDING SINGLE: TRIP

The genre-busting Vancouver up-and-comer Boslen dives deep into his bag of tricks for the moody, mind-bending single TRIP out now. Listen HERE. This is the first single from Boslen’s forthcoming debut album DUSK to DAWN. Sheff G, the leader of Brooklyn’s premier crew and label, Winners Circle Entertainment, closes out 2020 with the release of his debut album Proud of Me Now (Winners Circle Entertainment/RCA Records).  With Great John (“on the beat by the way”) helming production, Proud of Me Now is a coming-of-age lyrical journey where Sheff details his evolution – from his slip-ups to his come ups. YOUNG BOMBS “WRONG SIDE OF LOVE” VIDEO

Today, Young Bombs shared the official video for their wistful, country-tinged single featuring three-time GRAMMY Award winner Darius Rucker called “Wrong Side of Love.” The song, described by ABC News Radio as “a brooding ode to a doomed love story, set to a catchy and dance-able beat,” has racked up over one million global streams since its release.

Directed by Conan Jurek Karpinski and produced by Andrew Dixon, the amusing clip sees the Canadian duo embark on a journey to see their favorite country superstar—none other than the legendary Darius Rucker—in concert. With a few fellow quirky Rucker fans in tow, Martin and Tristan set their sights on Nashville only to find that the Canadian border has been closed. It’s only fitting that what would follow this disastrous road trip is a dance party in the wilderness with Bigfoot—who happens to be just as big of a Rucker fan as Young Bombs themselves. About Darius Rucker:

Rising hip-hop artist pineappleCITI returns with visuals to her single “Dance,” out today. Flipping the script on Dancing with The Stars, CITI’s latest video offers a clever play on the popular dance competition, adding a unique and comedic hip-hop flair. DREAMERS DROP VIDEO FOR “TRUE CRIME”

Just in time for Friday the 13th, cosmic-rock band DREAMERS have released a deliciously dark animated video for their new track, True Crime ft. DeathbyRomy. The video is a blend of live-action, stop-motion, 2D and 3D animation, by Burton Booz. This innovative clip perfectly captures the song’s story of love and betrayal set in the dark magic of New Orleans. Watch the video now HERE.

“The band was shot on a green screen so we could capture their performance. We then cut out their heads and placed them on 2D bodies that were made by mashing up photographs and illustrations like collage-art,” said director Jared Asher Harris when describing the creative process.

“The bodies were then rigged and animated in After Effects. The skeletons and sets were all hand-modeled and animated in 3D,” Harris continued. “When the animation was finished, we outputted the video as one giant clip and cut it up as though it were a live-action music video with trippy quick cuts.”

True Crime ft. DeathbyRomy was co-written by DREAMERS, DeathbyRomy, Joyway’s Dan Armbruster, and Sir Sly’s Jason Suwito and co-produced by Armbruster and Suwito. The track was inspired by the decadent city of New Orleans and the band’s chance encounter with a male witch, who taught the trio incantations. Lead singer Nick Wold describes their inspiration as “the terrible things the crimes that we can do to each other in the name of love.”

1. How does the influence of your parents’ careers shape your own visions and aspirations?

The making of my own new path and my parents have always been great examples of how to go about things in the industry. They are also both great examples when it’s come to molding myself and presenting myself a certain way. I definitely take after them a lot but I also enjoy it each and every day.

2. What has been the biggest challenge in your artistic career so far?

I would say my biggest challenge so far has been coming out of a group and going through the process of transitioning myself into a solo artist.

3. How did growing up in Atlanta with its huge T.V. and music scene impact where you are today?

I always feel like everything comes from Atlanta. We always set the trend for the culture and just growing up seeing so many legends come out of Atlanta was an inspiration to be a part of.

4. What were some of the major takeaways or skills you learned from working with Producer, J Reid?

I love working with J Reid! He’s always so welcoming and makes me comfortable working with him and expressing myself. As a result, he’s taught me a lot about how to collaborate with someone else and overall helped groom me into the artist I am today.

5. What is your favorite song you’ve worked on and what message does it send to the public?

My favorite song I’ve worked on would have to be the FTCU song I put out because it was just so fun to make! The message is honestly to just enjoy life and when your man is stressing you out, go out and live your best life.

6. Describe some of the struggles as well as the positive experiences that come with starring on “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle?”

The biggest struggle I would say is being under your parents’ shadow and everybody associating me as T.I. and Tiny’s daughter. However, it’s great to have memories with my family, and bringing light to my craft is always a plus.

7. As a new artist, who would you want to work with (male or female) and why?

I would like to work with so many artists, Rihanna Jhene Aiko, SZA, 6lack, and Eric Bellinger because I admire their work. They’re all so extremely creative.

8. What kind of content and which kind of audience do you see yourself approaching in the next 5 years? 

I’m mostly an R&N artist, so in about 5 years I would like to start approaching the pop world.

9. Now that you have released your double single, what are the next steps to promoting your songs?

When corona is all over, I’m going to shoot my videos for both songs. Hopefully, I can do both and I don’t think I’ll be able to do shows so I may just have to wait till next year to do that. On the bright side, I’ll definitely find creative ways to still go out and promote my music.
