An important Old Master Drawing by one of the greatest decorative painters of the eighteenth century, the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), has been discovered in a country house in England. The work was found by the famous literary family, the Sitwells while clearing out the family seat of more than 300 years, Weston Hall in Northamptonshire.
Speaking about the find, Henrietta Sitwell, one of the current generations of the Sitwells, said: “The drawing was purchased by my great uncle Osbert Sitwell in the great Henry Oppenheimer sale at Christies in 1936. No one seemed to know where it was, or even give it a second thought until one day last year when we were sorting through the many attics of Weston. We found it wrapped in bubble wrap, leaning against the wall. As I peeled back the wrapping, I instantly recognized it as something special (having studied history of art at university). This Tiepolo drawing is one of many exciting discoveries made in the attics of Weston Hall and it was thrilling to think that such a captivating and important work of art by such a revered Old Master was just lying there gathering dust over the years”.
The work features Punchinello, the hook-nosed, humpbacked clowns who were one of the stock characters taken from the Commedia dell’ Arte, an early form of professional theater, which began in Italy in the 16th century and became popular across Europe.
The character fascinated Tiepolo and he returned to the subject throughout his long career, depicting them gluttonous, preparing food, overeating, drinking, passing out from inebriation and suffering the digestive consequences of excessive consumption. They were inspired by the Venerdì Gnocolar, a tradition in Verona on the last Friday of Carnival, where gnocchi, wine and polenta is given out to the crowds in the main square by ‘Papà del Gnoco’.
Joe Robinson, Head of House Sales and Private Collections, said: “The re-discovery of the work by Tiepolo has probably been the most important find of the auction and we are delighted to be offering it for sale for the first time in over 80 yrs. Walking through the attics was like uncovering an Egyptian tomb, with wonderful things emerging from layers of dust. It is so rare for a collection with such history and breadth to come to the market and I feel privileged to be involved in the unveiling of a true piece of forgotten history”.
The work will be offered in the two day sale titled Weston Hall and the Sitwells: A Family Legacy at Dreweatts on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th November, 2021. It has been given a conservative estimate of £150,000-£250,000 but due to the popularity of Tiepolo’s Punchinello works and the global interest in Tiepolo as an artist, it is expected to far exceed this.
The Al Hirschfeld Foundation presents its latest online exhibition, The Dog Show: Hounds by Hirschfeld. Now live through August 15, the exhibition features drawings of dogs by the artists between 1924-2001. Featuring some of the most famous dogs in 20th century media – and some not-so-famous dogs who were well-loved by their humans. Canines take center stage in this exhibition including the artists’ reflections of The Thin Man, Frasier, Lassie, The Wiz, Annie, Gypsy, The Will Rogers Follies and more.
Dogs appear in drawings in nearly every category of the artists’ work, theatre, film, television, music, and literature, as well as politics, private commissions, and Hirschfeld’s earliest lithographs. The dogs seen in this show have been sorted by breed, just as they do in the best dog shows. There are breeds from each of the seven American Kennel Club groups represented: Sporting, Working, Terrier, Hound, Toy, Herding, and Non-Sporting.
The exhibition is curated by Katherine Eastman, Archives Manager of The Al Hirschfeld Foundation. “Westminster may be over, but this dog show is ready to begin,” says Eastman. “For this exhibition, we’ve searched through the Hirschfeld archive for images of dogs of every size and shape. You’ll learn some fun facts about different breeds. Maybe you’ll even fall in love with a breed and start looking for your next best friend.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Al Hirschfeld’s drawings stand as one of the most innovative efforts in establishing the visual language of modern art through caricature in the 20th century. A self-described “characterist,” his signature work, defined by a linear calligraphic style, appeared in virtually every major publication of the last nine decades (including a 75-year relationship with The New York Times) as well as numerous book and record covers and 15 postage stamps. Hirschfeld said his contribution was to take the character, created by the playwright and portrayed by the actor, and reinvent it for the reader. Playwright Terrence McNally wrote: “No one ‘writes’ more accurately of the performing arts than Al Hirschfeld. He accomplishes on a blank page with his pen and ink in a few strokes what many of us need a lifetime of words to say.”
In 1945, Hirschfeld celebrated the birth of his daughter Nina by placing her name in the background of a drawing. What the artist described as an innocent prank soon became a personal trademark and national obsession, as he began hiding numerous NINA’s throughout his drawings for years to come.
He is represented in many public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, and Harvard’s Theater Collection. Hirschfeld authored several books including Manhattan Oases and Show Business is No Business in addition to 10 collections of his work. He was declared a Living Landmark by the New York City Landmarks Commission in 1996, and a Living Legend by The Library of Congress in 2000. Just before his death in January 2003, he learned he was to be awarded the Medal of Arts from the National Endowment of the Arts and inducted into the Academy of Arts and Letters. The winner of two Tony Awards, he was given the ultimate Broadway accolade on what would have been his 100th birthday in June 2003. The Martin Beck Theater was renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theater.
OUTSIDER PROJECT CELEBRATES WORLD-RENOWNED CHICAGO ARTIST HENRY DARGER’S BIRTHDAY
French musician Philippe Cohen Solal found material ripe for musical expression in Chicago-born author and artist Henry Darger’s drawings, paintings, writings, life story and lyrics. The award-winning Cohen Solal drew from Darger’s oeuvre to compose OUTSIDER, an album and transmedia project honoring the renowned outsider artist. In celebration of Darger’s birthday on Monday, April 12, Intuit partners with Cohen Solal and Musee Art Moderne de Paris (MAM) on the launch of OUTSIDER, in which Cohen Solal will present an excerpt from the project live from MAM on the website at noon central time.
In the baroque pop album OUTSIDER, musicians Philippe Cohen Solal, Mike Lindsay, Adam Glover and Hannah Peel turn Darger’s paintings and writings into melodies. The album is available now on streaming platforms and the website an immersive bilingual website featuring music videos and a short film. Releasing in English on Wednesday, April 14, the accompanying bilingual podcast retraces Darger’s story through the testimonies of the people who knew him and studied and exhibited his work. Hear stories from the artist’s former landlord, Kiyoko Lerner, and learn more about the Henry Darger Room Collection, which Cohen Solal used as inspiration, from Intuit President and CEO Debra Kerr.
“It’s exciting to see Darger’s influence in new mediums. Philippe has long been inspired by both seeing the artworks in person and his visit to the Henry Darger Room at Intuit. As Darger is Intuit’s most closely associated artist and many people’s entry to the genre of outsider art, I’m always interested to see new creativity catalyzed by his story and body of work,” says Kerr. “In this case, Philippe and his colleagues have treated Henry’s legacy with the utmost respect, honor and care. Although Darger and his mysterious artwork have been of interest to the art world for several decades now, the outsider artist lived life in obscurity as a hospital janitor. Lerner’s husband, Nathan, discovered Darger’s work shortly before the artist’s death in 1972, and the couple shared it with outsider art enthusiasts and scholars who became fascinated by him over time.
As the pandemic keeps people removed from one another, an exploration of the notably isolated Darger is especially relevant. Cohen Solal’s interest in and repurposing of Darger’s work into new artforms speak to the universality and timeless emotional rawness of the late creator’s life and work. Celebrate Darger’s legacy at this commemorative program that is sure to delight and inspire fans around the world.

As a native of St. Louis, Missouri, Kaelen Felix is a graduate of Memphis College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Illustration (2018). When she was an undergraduate, she interned for Jabberblabber Earth Family Magazine, a monthly magazine with over 100,000 readers in the tri-state area. In October 2017, her illustration of their Jabberblabber character was featured on the front cover of the grandparent issue. That publication is an achievement for Kaelen as an undergraduate while looking back; she couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of it. The experience allowed her to define her artistic skills and to pursue a career in publishing.
Ms. Felix began her career as an artist when she was two years old! Six months later, Kaelen discovered her calling is to pursue art in illustration for books. As a child, art came naturally to Kaelen. Her tenacious desire allowed Kaelen to use her artistic ability to create storytelling book scenes from her imagination. She would often pay attention to how the light was casting on dolls and toys. She would create still-life and draw from observation for hours. Kaelen’s desire to spend a whole day on art made her heart complete as it showed her passion for capturing the light source and balancing the shadows became evident she could do it! Her favorite artist from the impression period, Vincent Van Gogh, inspired her whimsical style. The intricate details in her woodwork and water show her forte for a whimsy pattern.
Kaelen’s illustration career officially started in 2018. After completing undergrad, Kaelen collaborated with a remote author to illustrate a 32-page children’s book, A Colorful Balloon Ride (2018). At 23, Kaelen became a published illustrator and then collaborated with another children’s book author and created a 60-page book, Freddy the Foster Frog: Finds a Friendly Family (2020).
Currently, Kaelen is working on several collaborative projects, illustrating book 2 of the Freddy the Foster Frog series and acting as an illustrative editor for a soon to be published children’s book. In December 2020, Kaelen became an award-winning Best Book Illustrator for Freddy the Foster Frog from the SABA (Sound Advice Book Awards) in England!
Kaelen is a current intern for 360 Magazine (remotely), which is an edgy and fashion-forward company located in downtown Los Angeles, California. She illustrates topics such as celebrities, food, culture, and present news topics that coincide with political and other climate-changing current news. She thrives on creative and innovative illustrations that create a stylized and pop-art feel similar to Andy Warhol. Kaelen loves taking on any new challenge while being an intern at 360 Magazine as she embraced their well-known publications, print magazine, and brand identity.
Kaelen has a wide range of experience from illustrating magazine work to illustrating and designing two children’s books. Ms. Felix strongly believes collaboration is the key to creating a cohesive portfolio of work illustration or design. When illustrating the books, she always has a process of starting with reading the manuscript story, then it becomes a matter of how many illustrations need to be done in a timely or monthly manner. Finally, it comes down to a deadline and meeting that goal to be proficient in the business world. The process for all her commissioned pieces starts with brainstorming an idea from imagination and putting that idea on paper. She converses back and forth with clients to ensure their goals and visions are met! If she gets the final approval then, she applies the small thumbnail sketch onto the larger paper or digital platform.
Her inspiration as a kid also came from animals living in eco-friendly environments and creating characters with child-like style in my whimsical way. As far as the digital designs go, those vary in terms of how the style and vision come about from the client. Especially for 360 magazine, it’s a matter of not overthinking the process and trusting her instincts to create a work the magazine’s audience would be attracted to.
Ms. Felix works in areas from traditional illustrative mediums to digital graphics and print production art materials. Her areas of expertise include production art, illustration, print production art, and graphic art/design; she has over a couple of years of experience in those fields as she continues to work on fine-tuning her craft. Ms. Felix hopes to continue her illustration work while learning more about graphic design, brand identity, and the print packaging experience in a creative field from five to ten years down the line. Someday, she too is hoping to publish her own children’s book from her animal illustrations on her website! It’s always been a long-term goal to become a published illustrator and designer, and the Memphis College of Art, coupled with 360 Magazine allows her to follow her dream since the day she knew it could happen.

“We received a lot of great artwork from the youth in our community,” explains Robert Stinnett, general manager at WonderWorks Myrtle Beach. “We are happy to be able to have some of it on display for the next year. This is a great way to honor our young artists and to inspire others.”
Submissions for the art contest were accepted through December 18, 2020, with the winning submissions going on display January 22, 2021. The theme for this year’s contest was “Time to Think,” which encouraged young artists to think and express their thoughts through art. All of the artwork focused on being unique in concept, design, and execution. All winning artwork will help expand the illusion art gallery in a special section created to highlight local area youth art.
Encouraging youth to engage in art comes with many benefits. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, youth that engage in arts do better in school, are more optimistic, less likely to try drugs, and have higher school attachment. Additionally, youth who engage in art tend to have a higher quality of life, reduced stress and make them feel more involved in the community.
“Art is one of the things that we focus on here at WonderWorks Myrtle Beach,” added Stinnett. “We are happy to offer the area’s young artists a chance to have their artwork on display. Combine that with all the other family fun we offer, and it’s a winning combination.”

Jan. 2021 is hitting hard with the return of the Marvel Universe’s finest warriors, the Valkyries, in the brand new King in Black: Return of the Valkyries.
The story is written by Jason Aaron and Torunn Grønbekk with Nina Vakueva providing the art. The stars of the series will be Jane Foster, Dani Moonstar and Hildegarde, and a brand new Valkyrie will be introduced and given an origin story.
The Asgardians will face off against Knull, who seeks to overtake the Nine Realms with his unrelenting darkness. As Knull moves throughout the galaxy, it becomes evident that only the Valkyries and their new secret weapon are equipped to deal with him. What is their weapon, and is it enough to help them fend off Knull and save the universe?

Grønbekk called the Valkyries “powerful women who navigate both the spaces of the living and the dead,” adding that they are just inherently interesting to her.
“The role demands a perspective on life and battle that is quite unique; they see the whole picture, always, and when you combine that with the great humanity you find in characters like Jane Foster and Dani Moonstar, you get something really special,” Grønbekk said. “It takes courage to see the world through the eyes of a Valkyrie (especially when that world is under attack by Knull!), and that makes for complex and exciting stories of the kind I want to tell.”

The Untitled Space is pleased to present a group exhibition and public art series “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness” presented in collaboration with SaveArtSpace and Art4Equality. The two-part exhibition features an empowering public art series of 10 billboards each by different artists launching on September 21, 2020 in a variety of locations throughout New York City, to coincide with a gallery exhibition opening on September 26, 2020 at The Untitled Space featuring the work of over 50 contemporary artists. Revolving around the theme of “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness” the public art series and group exhibition is curated by Indira Cesarine, founder of The Untitled Space and Art4Equality.
The gallery will feature the unique artworks displayed on the billboards (presented by SaveArtSpace) along with an exhibition of many additional works in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, video, and sculpture inspired by the words “Equality,” “Life,” “Liberty,” and “The Pursuit of Happiness,” which will be on view at the gallery through October 17, 2020. The Untitled Space is honored to collaborate with non-profit SaveArtSpace and support the programming of Art4Equality, an initiative that supports the creation of empowering equality themed exhibitions and public art.

The billboard transformed into an art display is an innovative, and ultimately accessible way to present contemporary art, transforming spaces normally dedicated to advertising into public art that has power and impact. We received such an overwhelming response to the exhibit opportunity, which was presented via an open call, that I expanded the project to include a gallery group exhibition featuring over 50 artists who created artworks inspired by the theme – most of which were created during quarantine. The public art series and exhibition “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty, & The Pursuit of Happiness” seeks to empower, enlighten, and shed a ray of hope in a city that has been under a dark cloud, in a country that is in tatters not only by an invisible virus, but also by political and civil unrest. Founded in 2015, in Brooklyn, NY, SaveArtSpace is a non-profit organization that works to create an urban gallery experience, launching exhibitions that address intersectional themes and foster a progressive message of social change. By placing culture over commercialism, SaveArtSpace aims to empower artists from all walks of life and inspire a new generation of young creatives and activists. Since 2015, SaveArtSpace has installed the artwork of 180 artists on 212 advertising spaces in 10+ major US cities, coast-to-coast. The Untitled Space is an art gallery located in Tribeca, New York in a landmark building on Lispenard Street. Founded in 2015 by artist Indira Cesarine, the gallery features an ongoing curation of exhibits of emerging and established contemporary artists exploring conceptual framework and boundary-pushing ideology through mediums of painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video and performance art. The gallery is committing to exploring new ideas vis-à-vis traditional and new mediums and highlights a program of women in art. ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS RELEASES WRAITH EAGLE VIII SKETCHES ON THE CENTENARY OF THE FIRST NON-STOP TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT
To mark the centenary of the first non-stop transatlantic flight, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today releases unseen design sketches of its latest Collection Car, Wraith Eagle VIII. The collection of 50 motor cars tells the epic tale of the pioneering flight of Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown. The duo conquered unchartered skies to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a Vickers Vimy aircraft, powered by twin Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines, exactly 100 years ago.
The sketches, envisioned by the Bespoke Collective of the House of Rolls-Royce, offer a rare and intimate insight into the creative journey undertaken by Rolls-Royce designers as they worked to express an extraordinary act of courage within the palette of a Rolls-Royce motor car.
Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, commented, “The unique skill of our Bespoke Design Collective sees the story of one of the most pivotal moments of the 20th century, the first non-stop transatlantic flight, told using Wraith, a motor car which speaks of power, drama and adventure. The designs highlight the remarkable attention to detail of Rolls-Royce Bespoke craftsmanship. The starlight headliner sketch shows cloud embroidery, the halfway point coordinates and the flight path of Alcock and Brown. A further detailed sketch shows the night-time view from above, which is expertly incorporated into Wraith’s fascia, in the form of a gold, silver and copper inlay.
The sketch of the Collection Car’s clock depicts an iced background effect reminiscent of the freezing instrument panels of the adventurers, while the clock’s green night time glow is illustrated – a direct reference to the only light seen by Alcock and Brown as they crossed the Atlantic.

The first non-stop transatlantic flight
Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown braved uncharted skies to make the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June, 1919. Contemporaries of Sir Henry Royce, Alcock and Brown flew non-stop from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland in a modified First World War Vickers Vimy bomber aircraft. The bi-plane was powered by twin 20.3 litre, 350 bhp, Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines. It is from this remarkable engine that this Collection takes its name. Rolls-Royce marks the 100 year anniversary of this feat with a highly contemporary Collection that speaks to today’s adventurers, whilst honouring those who changed the course of history.
“I do not know what we should most admire – their audacity, determination, skill, science, their aeroplane, their Rolls-Royce engines – or their good fortune”, commented Sir Winston Churchill, following the perilous journey that brought unfathomable advancement to 20th century society.
Alcock and Brown established a legend and gained a place alongside Sir Donald Campbell in the most select club in the world; those who push beyond previous conceptions of human endeavour to achieve seemingly impossible records on land, water and now, air. Their one binding characteristic? Rolls-Royce power.
The duo suffered every conceivable challenge an aviator could face. The Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines were the only components that proved indestructible. The engines propelled the aerial voyage at previously unimagined speeds, averaging 115 mph. Their peril cannot be underestimated. Their radio and navigation instruments failed almost immediately, leaving the pilots flying unaided at night through dense cloud and freezing fog for many hours, sometimes upside down. Eventually they emerged from the cloud and using Brown’s extraordinary skill as a navigator, flew by the stars to the coast of Ireland.
