JIM CHAPMAN x CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Ahead of the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival, Jim Chapman, Writer and Content Creator, celebrates the upcoming A-list event with exclusive insight into the most memorable moments from previous years, and what to expect from this year’s festival.

Jim gives us the lowdown on Cannes, one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world.  He recalls back in 2011, when Kanye West performed an exclusive after party set and invited Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx onstage for an impromptu performance of his hit single, ‘Gold Digger’.

Jim also recounts his untold insight from the 2015 festival when Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin and director Denis Villeneuve all wore high heels to the premiere of Sicario, as a demonstration against an antiquated dress code requiring women to wear heels to all evening gala premieres. Famously,  Julia Roberts appeared barefoot on the red carpet as an act of fashion rebellion against the same rule too.

As Cannes is one of the most anticipated red carpet events of the awards calendar,  Jim is expecting to see Hollywood star, Cate Blanchett pull out all the stops, as this year,  as she has been named President of the Jury, alongside other actresses including Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux to name but a few.

Jim also discusses the stir caused by organizers who have banned Netflix productions being considered for the Palme D’Or and Netflix’s decision to withdraw their title from the festival.

“There’s a lot to like about Gilfillian’s songs, his musical muscle is tempered by his swagger and confidence,” NPR Music said. Growing up outside Philadelphia, he took up the electric guitar at age 14. After moving to Nashville to pursue music full-time, Gilfillian self-released his debut, Travelin’ Blues, a five-song collection of originals that showcased his powerful blend of soul, blues, rock and gospel.

ALISON WONDERLAND x NEW VIDEO

Following her powerful performance at sunny Coachella, Alison Wonderland unveils her new video, Easy, which finds her dancing her way through a storm, stalked by an unrelenting rain cloud that even follows her indoors. Wonderland came up with the concept for the video after connecting with a scene from the 1998 film, The Truman Show.
“When I’m not happy, it feels like there is constant dark rain cloud over my head and it seems like everyone else is in the sunshine. It’s easy to feel isolated and alone, “explains Wonderland. “I wrote Easy on a day I felt like this. The description in the chorus is very literal. I woke up in bed too embarrassed to tell the guy next to me that I was sad for no reason, so I went to the bathroom to cry secretly because I was too scared to be honest at the time.”

A JOVIAL JASHN FOR A JAUNTY COLLEGE

Superheroes walking the corridors, live art performances, a car show, and a DJ night. What sounds like a unforgettable music festival was the star attraction of the Dubai International Academic City where its annual event titled Jashn was celebrated.

Literally translating to ‘celebration’, JASHN 2018 stepped up to the occasion by centering on a theme that seemed to be at the tip of everyone’s tongue-comic books and movies. The Dubai Campus of BITS Pilani raised the bar once again by setting up one of the most elaborate stages in the region inviting the best to showcase their skills. And with the atmosphere of Marvel and DC to drive the festivities, the event proved to be a great crowd-puller for students and teens.

The inaugural ceremony occurred on the 16th of April and was marked by a musical evening by the musicians of the campus followed by a stage play round and a fashion show by the group called Drape. To conclude the evening in a round of laughter and splits, popular Indian comic Biswa Kalyan took to the stage and left the audience wanting for more.

The second day for was an energetic extension with further competitions defined by quizzes, musicals, musical battles and a lot more.

The next day attracted a great crowd for the detective themed scavenge hunt titled ‘CSI’ followed by instrumental competitions, dancing doubles, a fashion show round and a guest performance by the artist Rooh. All the while, the crowd outside were being entertained by a high octane road show featuring the best cars.

But the level had to be raised further as the campus closed the event with a awe-inspiring round of competitions attracting students with an artistic touch with a solo stage play round, a poetry slam competition, a group dance show off and finally a DJ performance by the duo Sunburn-Siana Caherine and Zephyrtone.

JASHN 2018 La Comic Fiesta had achieved the same mass appeal of the very comic  brands it endorsed and plans on scaling new heights with the coming years. You can find out more here.
