Humane Policing with Darron Spencer

Everyone has an opinion when it comes to the rift that exists between the police and members of their community, but no one understands the problems better than a police officer. Darron Spencer worked just twenty months on patrol before a debilitating condition ended his career. He was an exemplary employee, having overseen 250-plus cases and 4 death investigations that resulted in 40 felony and 74 misdemeanor arrests, and was awarded Deputy of the Year and received the Ribbon of Merit.

Drawing on this experience and past experience as a Marine, corrections officer and sheriff’s deputy, Spencer decided to write a book detailing his own unique approach to “humane policing,” using real instances of how it was implemented and why it was so successful. In his newly-released book, Humane Policing: How Perspectives Can Influence Our Performance, he addresses the crisis we currently have in our nation and shares his techniques for counteracting negative perceptions.

A recipient of the 2017 Book Excellence Award in the Law category from Literary Excellence Incorporated, Humane Policing is a comprehensive yet easy-to-understand handbook that works equally well for law enforcement professionals and the general public. It provides game-changing tools with the specific changes that need to be made in order to help officers better serve their communities. His goal is two-fold: To greatly improve the relationship between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve, and ultimately have an impact on the public image of law enforcement officers on a national level.

Indeed, people with disabilities experienced a four-fold increase in job opportunities last year – unprecedented growth

In states across the country, Governors are undertaking new efforts to expand job opportunities for all. For example, Gov.Edwards recently launched a task force focused on employment for Louisianans with disabilities. Gov. Walker just signed historic legislation that makes Wisconsin an Employment First and commits resources to expanding competitive, integrated employment. Remarkable progress and remarkable leadership.

During the Meeting of the National Governors Association (NGA), our team and partner organizations spoke 1-on-1 with thirty-four different Governors. In each meeting we advocated for policies and practices that will expand economic opportunities. For several Governors, we had the chance to honor them with an award for their leadership and their continuing commitment to these issues.

At the end of the day, there are hundreds of self-advocates, community organizations and state leaders in a position to drive this change forward. Your involvement can move progress even faster! THE ECONOMIST x OPEN FUTURE

The Economist, a leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs, today announced “Open Future”, an editorially driven initiative (www.economist.com/openfuture) which aims to remake the case for The Economist’s founding principles of classical British liberalism which are being challenged from all sides in the current political climate of populism and authoritarianism.

“Although the world has changed dramatically since James Wilson founded The Economist to fight against the Corn Laws, the liberalism we have championed since 1843 is as important and relevant as ever,” said Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief, The Economist. “Yet the core tenets of that liberalism—faith in free markets and open societies—face greater resistance today than they have for many years. From globalization to free speech, basic elements of the liberal credo are assailed from right and left.”

Content for Open Future will be developed and organised around five themes: Open Society (diversity, and individual rights versus group rights); Open Borders (migration); Open Markets (trade, markets, taxes and welfare reform); Open Ideas (free speech); and Open Progress (the impact and regulation of technology). In addition to content from The Economist editorial staff, the Open Future hub will feature commentary from outside contributors, including from those with dissenting points of view.

The initiative launches with a debate between Larry Summers and Evan Smith about no-platforming and free speech at universities. Mr Summers is the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard University. He served as Secretary of the Treasury for President Clinton and as the Director of the National Economic Council for President Barack Obama. Evan Smith is a Research Fellow in history at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia and is writing a book on the history of no-platforming.

A special report on the future of liberalism written by editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes will appear in the newspaper’s 175th anniversary edition dated September 15th. And on that Saturday, the newspaper will host the Open Future Festival, to be held simultaneously in Hong Kong, London and New York. There will also be an Open Future essay contest for young people; surveys and other data visualizations; podcasts; social-media programs and new video from Economist Films.

Little kids get bored easily and that’s why you need to be prepared very well for rainy weekends. If you’re out of ideas, then you might want to have a look at the following suggestions and maybe get some inspiration.

Have an Indoor Treasure Hunt

This is a fantastic idea for families with kids. You can keep your kid’s day lively with an indoor treasure hunt. Make a set of clues for each player and hide the treasure very well. You can even ask kids to play in teams. Either way, this will keep them entertained at least for a couple of hours. In the meantime, you can have some relaxing time and prepare some other fun games for them. Explore the Outdoors

Going outdoors on a rainy day is not necessarily that exciting. Nonetheless, no one says that you need to go on a hike in the pouring rain. If you have kids and a pet, you can all put on your raincoats and go for a short walk around the neighborhood. If not, you can go to the mall and have some cake, visit some relatives or try a new experience such as an escape room. Plan a Vacation

What is the inspiration behind creating this project?

I sought out to create Wontag Watches because of my passion for timepieces and desire to one day possess my own brand. It’s frustrating when one pays hundreds of dollars for name brand watches, knowing they only cost a fraction of the price to fabricate. I have spent a lot of time (days and nights) preparing for this moment; and finally, I came up with an affordable, stylish looking collection which I know everyone will love.

Why is Wontag better than any other watch on the market?

Because you don’t want to pay for
branding, marketing, logos, designer
names, etc …. you want to pay for high quality material and craftsmanship. You want the value on your watch, you want a watch reflecting the money you spent on it. So when designing this watch collection, I made sure to include the following details:

1. A minimalist look that could be worn in a casual or professional
setting.

3. Automatic movement watches at an affordable price.

Michelle Cadreau x “Dominate”

Hip-hop lyricist Michelle Cadreau has developed a writing and rapping style with both subtlety and introspection to reflect her Native Canadian Indian and Polish ancestry. With four CDs to her credit, the Hamilton, Ontario melds hypnotic and soulful beats with her trademark urban poetry to create a performance style that is equally juxtaposed and complementary.

Given the native Indian name Blue Sky at birth by her grandmother (who was born on a reserve in northern Ontario), Cadreau has a tattoo on her back of blue zebra stripes in the shape of an eye with the inscription ‘Blue Sky.’ It is a physical reminder of her spiritual relationship to the earth and heavens and her family.

With musical influences that include Biggie Smalls, Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg, Cadreau proudly emulates their style. Her ideas often come from a word or phrase that sparks inspiration and builds from there. She also credits her parents for her love of music. Both played in bands most of their lives – her mother (a nurse by profession) is a vocalist and drummer and her father a vocalist and bass guitarist.

Like her mother, Cadreau also plays drums, having begun lessons at age five. She is also an accomplished painter and jewelry designer and has a degree in interior design. Her connection to the visual arts has been a foundation for her lyrics, which paint pictures of the joy and pain of life.

Among her releases is the breakout number, “Precipitation,” an articulate and explicit song that boldly details a rapper giving a slam performance for fans; “Like a Killer,” uses boxing to symbolize violence; and “Hip Hop Clerk” is a commentary on making it in the music industry.

Also included is “Ineffable,” a look at fan adulation; “Give Me The Prize,” a nod to intelligence and the rewards it can provide; and “Tallest Mountain,” a heartfelt look at making your way up the hip hop ladder. Her strongest response by far from both fans and critics online has been for the song “Ghetto Survival,” which equates creating powerful rap music with persistence and success.

Cadreau is using her lyrical deftness and distinct vantage point to create music that is true to her while paying homage to the complex backstory of rap and hip hop.
