Armon describes his career aspirations regarding AOHSOA: “I’ve always dreamed of being an entrepreneur in the retail/fashion industry. Armon originally worked his way up in the retail industry, and now has created his own brand. He explains his journey to reaching his current achievements: “To me, success is measured as any opportunity from which I’ve had to learn and grow. In 2015/2016, before creating AOHSOA, I had the opportunity to participate in a spring product review when employed by True Religion as a store director. This experience sparked ideas in me for my future and gave me a raw understanding of the inner workings of a successful brand. My creativity and marketing sense was ignited in a way that I still look back on with gratitude. This experience led me to working as the assistant stylist for Toure Designs’ fashion show in 2018. At the fashion show, I had an idea that I felt would elevate a look just moments before the model was to walk the runway: having the model walk while shirtless. Fortunately, it was a very well received style suggestion. In that moment, I learned to trust my instincts, which has helped, and will continue to help, my endeavors with AOHSOA.

“More recently, I worked on several projects with independent recording artist, LaJune. As her personal stylist and creative director for three years, this is truly a passion project. During the pandemic, we collaborated on two live performances and two music videos. Additionally, we worked on an editorial shoot featuring Land Rover’s Defender to be featured in 360 Magazine. More recently, I hosted my second pop-up shop activation, The Bodega. The relaxed shopping event featured AOHSOA trunk options, and introduced a new assortment of blouses & dresses called “Onesie”. The one-size-fit-most offerings were a success, selling out of samples and having many orders placed. 2020 highlighted my need to develop a multifunctional living space, which has been an integral piece to my growth and development as a business owner. With the help of talented friends, family and supporters, we developed a space for myself and other creatives to come to develop their art and conduct business, with a twist. This living space has proved successful for both LaJune, AOHSOA, and my partners, as they may continue working, producing and creating safely during the uncertainty. The space, #360TRAP, has led to invaluable collaborations and partnerships.”

“While the pandemic has weighed heavy on small business owners, Armon found a way to take advantage of his downtime. He continues explaining how 2020 affected his career path and personal vision: “The pandemic has helped me realize the need for businesses and artists to pivot and evolve in order to overcome challenges. It became important to use the down time of lockdown wisely so that I wouldn’t lose the momentum I’ve generated, nor plateau creatively. I found myself unemployed and unable to operate AOHSOA in the traditional way. However, I felt even more committed to making AOHSOA successful and on the front lines of a movement of change. With the time the pandemic afforded me to commit myself to this passion full-time, I developed my administrative and brand management skill set in preparation for a resurgence. Additionally, the social justice movement gave people like myself an opportunity to reflect on the times and ways in which we can impact the world and its ecosystem. AOHSOA is committed to progress in diversity and inclusivity – it’s who we are. Expressing myself creatively supported me with a clearer perspective, and more importantly, an outlet for my process. I began sewing more, creating merchandise, and focusing on building my inventory and my social presence through blogging. I strategized around ensuring AOHSOA could survive and thrive in a pandemic, and set goals for the next six months. After creating a space, #360TRAP, in partnership with 360 Magazine, I developed concepts and ideas that mutually benefitted my business and my clients. I grew my client list and increased sales by $515 over this time last year. I honed in on social media engagement, adding a layer to my brand by sharing lifestyle aspects via my blog. On the blog, I discuss all things fashion, music and lifestyle, with elements of design. I am also working toward evolving this business into a bespoke brand with customized curations, as well as capsule fashion.

“As a precursor to World Blood Day and my birthday in June 2021, AOHSOA hosted a pop-up shop called the Bodega that featured several clients and sponsors. These collaborators included Respire by Design, The 6th Clothing Co., a local NYC tattoo artist,  Chinelos Tacos NYC food truck, CocoOil, and Zavor. The event was a direct response to realign and reconnect with my community post-isolation. I continued to develop concepts for LaJune, including a streetwear collection of merchandise for her third EP, Mind. The merchandise collection is titled #mindmerch, and has been made available to her fans and supporters of AOHSOA. Our partnership, live performances, and music videos led to a collaboration with Viacom and a video shot at Smash Studios. These challenging times have taught me to pivot (sometimes at a moment’s notice), adjust, and be consistent in executing my plans. Having a network of talented supporters and friends has allowed for delegation and shared responsibilities, and most importantly, resources. All of these efforts resulted in a 47% increase in site sessions over 2020, with 51% representing unique visitors retaining 38% of existing traffic. As we enter the fourth quarter of this year, at my digital shop we anticipate an increased in traffic shy of 26% of last year’s visitors. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, I committed myself to elevating my brand with proven success. I embrace future challenges with an open heart because I know they will only make me smarter and stronger.”

Armon continues to work to grow his innovative, fashionable design brand, Ace of Haze Style of Ace. Through conducting SWOT analyses and evaluating his business practices, Armon looks to the future with determination and his signature creative flair. He is committed to inclusivity and actively works to pay forward his successes. Armon looks to use the platform AOHSOA has granted him to continue to pursue his own dreams, and help others do the same. He looks to not only building his brand empire, but also giving back to his community through charitable endeavors and his design abilities. Through creating opportunities for and mentoring the next generation of future fashion entrepreneurs, Armon aims to aid other young creatives in finding their own personal brands.

In describing his brand’s business model, Armon remarks that ” I believe that newly formed corporations should add activations for their diverse team members to feel comfortable and accepted no matter their color, creed, belief, sexuality or religion, and I aim to have AOHSOA be a leader in this effort. I want to position my organization to reflect the “Ballroom” culture within the LGBTQ community, by fostering a movement in life & style and allowing creatives a safe space to hone their skills and talents while they build their network. I am also looking forward to becoming more active in charitable endeavors, specifically working with kids/teens to help them find their brand within.”

Pandemic Pampering – How independent salons have fared compared to the huge franchise chains

There’s no denying that the pandemic has been tough on the hair and beauty industry.  Unfortunately, as great as technology is, it’s not yet possible to have a haircut or manicure online or by Zoom and, for salons, closed doors have meant that salons have been without income for several months.

A business built on touch

As restrictions begin to lift, there’s still no real normal for salons as many are operating at a reduction – sometimes up to 30% – in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines.  For salon owners, margins tend to be pretty tight and, many make between 5% and 6% on a full book – something which, for the moment, is simply not possible.  In the meantime, overheads such as rent, contracts and utility bills don’t go away.  

Resuscitating salons post-pandemic

We’ve now reached a stage where our salons are open once again and it’s time to see how things have shaken out.  Historically, hair salons have managed to ride the wave of tough times extremely well – for example, during the 2008 recession, salons saw little change in their fortunes.  Salon owner, Wall-Innella said at that time, “People find the money.  They won’t pay the mortgage, but they’ll get their hair done”.  

A recession is a time to tighten your belt but, what about a pandemic?  In the past, small, independent salons have tended to lose out during times of hardship and, so, let’s take a look at how the pandemic has impacted on independents vs larger chain salons:

David and Goliath

By December 2020, 4,578 hair and beauty salons closed for good in the UK due to the pandemic and the early signs are that the majority of these were small independents – and there are a couple of reasons for this:

Banking on survival

Although franchise and chain salons such as Headmasters and Toni & Guy have taken a hit during lockdown, these huge brands tend to have enough in the coffers to weather the storm.  Although there may have been some closures, the brands will generally bounce back pretty quickly.  Small, indie salons, on the other hand, usually operate month to month and will rarely have the cash cushion available to allow them to survive.

Pivoting the pampering

Brands such as Toni & Guy have their own range of products which are sold in supermarkets and as upsells in their salons.  These brands were able to pivot their businesses during COVID-19 by selling their products online and by creating affiliate programs to drum up more sales.  This is, unfortunately, a luxury that smaller salons don’t share.

When it comes to bouncing back from the pandemic, a lot of customers will be disappointed to find that their favourite local salon may no longer be trading.  Thankfully, however, a great many salons have been able to make it through due to business interruption loans.  While times will still be difficult due to social distancing, Booksy’s salon scheduling and management app can be a lifeline for smaller salons.  Booksy allows for online booking of appointments which makes life simpler for customers – but that’s not all.  For small salon owners, the app’s management and marketing features are a fantastic solution in helping them optimise their capacity and easily manage inventory and promotions.

When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist/fashionista?

All my life I’ve had an attraction to doing things in a different way. I never wanted to look like someone else, never wanted to share my fashion secrets or my music because I had attached so much emotion in creating whatever piece it was or if were music it would never just be a song, for me. I was never like my friends and for a while that was a struggle for me internally. Sometimes I would even sacrifice my own desires to wear certain pieces in order to skip out on the ‘reading’ sessions. That still didn’t stop me from trying it sometimes though, I remember I would go to the nearest arts and crafts store which for me was ‘Michaels’ (laughs) and would go crazy getting little things to add to my clothes to make them different but then I would also go to Sam Ash, the Virgin Music Store, Guitar Center and I would feel like I was in heaven. No matter what, fashion and music have always been my life. Like I could sit in these stores for the rest of my life and be okay. That’s how much I loved creating and these stores gave me all the tools I needed.

I have always been a magnet to everything that dealt with the arts. But my biggest passion was singing and even though I’ve been singing since the age of 5, I didn’t know that I wanted to pursue being a singer until my 9th grade year in high school. This is why after graduating I ran straight to NYC all by lonesome (giggles) to pursue music. I was way to young to be running off to the Big Apple as a teen with a part time job at the GAP, making minimum wage. New York City was a monster and I’m not going to lie it almost ate me alive. But only after 6 months of being there, thankfully, so many doors opened for me and it was an amazing feeling to be carefree and pursue music with no walls or barriers. NYC was giving me all the life and opportunities needed in order to grind and continue to grind even when I had not a dollar to my name and had to sing on the train with my friends for food. That part never made me feel sad because I never knew how ‘low’ I was because I never had LOW thoughts, I knew that where I was, was temporary and only for the sole purpose of learning the lessons needed to be successful and to grow and to evolve. Crazy thing is I never felt bad for it, it felt so good to grind for my money while doing what I love. I looked at singing on the trains as my stage per say for that chapter in my life. Today, I have experienced so many different things which I won’t even dive into but it has given me a different appreciation for life.

As of late, I am in the studio recording my album and will be performing in Manhattan, Monday, February at 7PM

What inspired your new album?

I had a full album done and ready to go and visuals that my fiancé (Michael Mann) had helped me out with for my release but after the tragedy that happened I no longer connected to the old music. I have so much more to say and so much pinned up aggression that I knew my only healthy escape would be to express it on my debut album. Which will be entitled, Steven my birth name.

It symbolizes me going back to my roots to find myself again.

How’s life after losing a loved one?

Life after losing a loved one has been very up and down for me. As of recent, I’ve drowned myself in work because I know that is where I’m safest right now. When you know yourself and you want better you keep yourself away from danger. Right now dead time is danger for me so I’m always moving. My heart is in constant pain but I’m learning to live with it. It is a battle I have yet to conquer but I know with time I’ll be fine.

Recently, notable fashion stylist, Michael Mann, sadly passed away. His cause of death is still unknown.

Michael has worked with 360 Magazine, Fashion Bomb Daily as well as Vogue Brasil.

Not long ago, model Draya Michele teamed up with Mann for her 360 Magazine cover. “You pushed for me. When they said I couldn’t be a fashion girl, you said I could,” asserts Draya (on a recent Instagram post). It’s evident that Mann made a sincere effort to see both his clients and loved ones reach their personal best.

“From the moment I first laid eyes on you I fell in love. One of the most captivating spirits I’ve ever met. Our journey together wasn’t perfect but it was worth it. I am in disbelief and pain writing this. Rest in Paradise my friend, I love you!,” stated Lil Mama.

Recently, a GoFundMe page was created to assist Mann’s family with costly funeral arrangements.

This accessory is a living hybrid: its dual-colored strap is a fusion of Off-Whites graphic yellow Weight Securing System strap and Preston’s signature orange band with the branded word “Style” in Russian.
