360 MAGAZINE × TENNESSEE

Story × Photos by Ryan Johnson

360 Magazine visited the Upper Cumberland Area of Tennessee this October. Just in time to catch the transformation of the leaves into fall colors. This region of Tennessee is located between Nashville and Knoxville, 1 hour drive each way. The flagship towns in the area, Crossville and Cookeville, not only capture beauty of small towns on the fringe of picturesque landscapes, they provide access to a multitude of incorporated businesses. The combination of affordable shopping with the low cost of living and no state tax make this a hidden gem prime to visit for the traveler interested in an authentic experience, maybe more. If this isn’t explicit enough, it’s the only place I’ve been in the states I’m seriously considering moving to. That realization stuck in three days.

We spent most of our time in the state parks. Natural beauty wasn’t the only consistent theme. Each park was fitted with Jackson Kayaks, a local company that not only leads the sport but also the industry. The kayaks provided to the parks were offered at a massive discount to ensure everyone visiting would have the opportunity to try it themselves. A philosophy that says everything about the community and values of Jackson Kayak. This company created by Eric Jackson, a lead competitor in the sport, started the company with a kayak for his son. A product which at the time did not exist for someone that young, giving all kids the change to try it out.

In true pay it forward style, this collective effort in the community is full circle. One direct example being the contribution of outdated signs and details from the state parks to furnish a local brewery, Happy Trails Brewing Company. This brewery, headed by Jessica, a working Kindergarten Teacher in the community. Similar to all good breweries is a product of its surroundings. Another notable taste is Red Silo, a brewery that started as the winner of the home brew contest at the local WCTE PBS Station Blues & Brew fundraiser. Calf Killer is another local legend that brings a taste that will make your taste buds melt. These obvious must tries are only half the adventure, you could spend the day with the home brewers and be the judge yourself.

It’s easy to follow the well-traveled highways in between Nashville and Knoxville. You won’t regret taking an exit and heading to the green on the map. The state parks are vastly accessible, overlooks and access is a high priority brought forth by the pioneering effort of the CCC. The Civilian Conservation Corps healing gesture was an organized effort by the Roosevelt Administration in the wake of the great depression. If this doesn’t paint the picture, don’t worry. There’s a set of tourist binoculars that give people who are colorblind the ability to see colors for the first time, which in the fall will bring a loved one to their knees.

While most of the sites are accessible to all, there’s another layer for the more adventurous. Fairly strenuous hikes to the base of the many waterfalls are always buried beyond the overlooks. Some that were only made accessible by Disney in the production of the 1994 film “The Jungle Book” which created roads to some surreal and recognizable locations in the film. Justifiably integral to the jungle aesthetics the film demanded. Likewise, Tennessee is the one of two places in the world that offer the spectacle of synchronous fireflies. The other being in Southeast Asia.

With solid views and tasty beer, naturally comes great food. The care and attention restaurant owners put into their work makes the meals feel family style without the crockpot. Notably the buffet at Homestead Harvest in Cumberland Mountain State Park carries as much depth as the hike on Pioneer Trail around Byrd Lake. If you really feel like earning your meal, rent a Jackson Kayak to enjoy the cool breeze off the water. Whether you’re camping or staying in the luxury cabins at the top of the hill, wake early and catch the fog on the lake first thing in the morning.

Great things are made in Tennessee, you could be too.

Bill Anderson “Waffle House Christmas”

Bill Anderson’s clever new holiday music video, “Waffle House Christmas,” features a cast of characters only Anderson could corral into a Waffle House. The music video, premiering on USATODAY.com, tells the story of a family whose Christmas dinner goes awry so they head to their nearest Waffle House for a family feast where some of music’s most notable personalities fill the restaurant.

“The offer of ‘food and fun’ was all it took to entice Kid Rock, Tanya Tucker, Gretchen Wilson, Jeannie Seely, Joe Denim and a Waffle House restaurant full of ‘brand new friends’ to join us for the recent filming of our new video, “Waffle House Christmas,” Anderson shares. “We dined on Waffle House staples…’grits and eggs and raisin bread’ along with ‘hash browns covered and smothered’….and we laughed ourselves silly portraying the take-over of a Waffle House restaurant by a rookie cook and a displaced family on Christmas Day. My thanks to everyone involved. I just hope you will enjoy watching the madness as much as we enjoyed creating it.”

Waffle House Christmas” is off Anderson’s latest release, Anderson, which marked his 72nd album release.

“I’ve never had this much fun at a Waffle House! Bill Anderson is one of my heroes and he’s written some of the greatest songs of all time. Of course, only he could come up with such a clever song like ‘Waffle House Christmas!’ And we had such a blast behind the scenes with Kid Rock, Gretchen Wilson and Jeannie Seely,” Tanya Tucker added.

“I am so grateful that I was asked to be involved in something like this. I’ve been such a fan of Bill Anderson for so long. And I get to hang out with my heroes!  I also had a Waffle House uniform in my closet from a television special we did several years ago, so it’s been a lot of fun being part of this music video,” said Gretchen Wilson.

“This has been an amazing experience!” exclaimed Jeannie Seely. “Bill Anderson is always coming up with great ideas. And corralling me, Tanya, Gretchen and Kid Rock all together for a music video at Waffle House has got to be one of the silliest, most fun things I’ve done in a long time!”

Anderson was produced by Bill Anderson, Thomm Jutz and Peter Cooper, recorded and mixed by Jutz at TJ Tunes with assistant engineer Andy Kern and mastered by Alex Mccullough at True East Mastering. Three of the tracks were penned solely by Anderson, who has written charted songs in each of the past seven consecutive decades, while the additional tracks feature venerable singer-songwriters including John Paul White of The Civil Wars and country music outlaw Jamey Johnson.

Fueling anticipation further, the tracklisting for Skins has been uncovered today. A fitting swan song for the young legend, these ten tracks tap into the unbridled, unbreakable, and undeniable catharsis that endeared XXXTentacion to millions worldwide.

The glitchy choir of “Guardian angel” gives way to some of his most precise and potent rapping, hinging on rapid fire rhymes. Haunting piano burns against his emotive lyricism on the steamrolling of “Train food” as he offers up a detailed and diaristic confession, “I was lost.” “Staring at the Sky” snaps from an acoustic moan into a thunderous scream backed by drums from none other than blink-182’s Travis Barker. Over ominous guitars, Kanye West locks into a pummeling duet with XXXTentacion on the rap/rock mash-up “One Minute,” also featuring Barker’s percussive talents. Everything culminates on the delicate and dark dreamscape of “what are you so afraid of.” A faint acoustic murmurs beneath his soulful delivery on the final question, “What are you so afraid of? Is it love?”

Check out the full tracklisting of XXXTentacion’s transformative masterpiece below.

The single “BAD!” preceded the record, clocking over 150 million YouTube views to date. It also debuted at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is pending RIAA gold certification. Skins showcases a true artist at the height of his powers only growing stronger. Feel it this week.

Flash Mob Disrupts UN 20,000 Rally For World Law to Save Humanity

A Broadway actor leapt over a barricade to the front of the United Nations Assembly and interrupted the proceedings with a demand for peace and world law to protect human rights for all.

“And if you won’t do it, step aside and a Peoples World Assembly will arise from our own ranks to do it,” shouted actor Garry Davis, a war veteran and former bomber pilot.

UN security forces grabbed Davis, but as they tussled with him, war-hero Robert Sarrazac leapt up on the opposite balcony and shouted in French: “In the name of the people of the world not represented here, I interrupt!”

Other protesters scattered among the audience leapt up to continue the speech: “The nations you represent divide us and lead us to the abyss of total war.”

Delegates were shocked–until it became clear this was a coordinated action. Then many applauded and joined in.

On December 9, outside the UN, 20,000 supporters rallied to demand that world law be passed to protect human rights for all.

The December 9th rally was a historic first, in that it occurred seventy years ago today, and was part of the massive people-power movement which helped trigger the unanimous passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) the very next day: December 10th, 1948.

In a clip released to the press at http://vimeo.com/297521680 one of the protesters, Pierre Bergé, said the interruption of the United Nations General Assembly in Paris was planned and executed by “very famous writers” including Albert Camus.

Bergé called the disruption “a political comedy” and said it was designed to give people hope for a better way to run our world. “We have to dream, because the only way to catch the reality is to dream.”

The hidden history of how one man’s bold action helped spark a massive movement on the eve of this great leap forward for humanity is told in a forthcoming film “The World is My Country.”

Here is an excerpt:

Because this 70th anniversary event is so relevant to the hot-button issues in today’s world, the filmmakers are making a special password-protected preview version available online–for one week only. To sign up for this advance preview click on this link and select “Free Preview.”

Los Angeles area media and others are invited to meet the director at a preview screening of the film December 8th at 6:30 PM at 3916 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City 90230.

For more information about Garry and the passage of the UDHR see the article in the German magazine Spiegel.

Muslim Advocates Responds to Facebook’s Latest Effort to Cover Up its Campaign to Discredit Civil Rights Groups

The following is a statement from Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, in response to the release of a 3-page document from Facebook that provides a peak into its campaign to tie valid concerns about the bigotry on Facebook’s platforms to an anti-Semitic effort to vilify Jewish philanthropist George Soros. Muslim Advocates has long been engaged in coalition efforts to root out bigotry on Facebook:

Since Facebook’s smear campaign against civil society groups was unearthed two weeks ago, Muslim Advocates has requested that Facebook disclose all of the research done in the name of discrediting Soros and other organizations seeking to hold Facebook accountable for the bigotry that has flourished on its platforms.

But the company has only responded with silence, and we haven’t seen any documents – until today and only because a media outlet received a leaked document. In anticipation of Buzzfeed publishing an excerpt of the memo that provides a peak into Facebook’s efforts to tie valid criticism into a long-running anti-Semitic campaign, Facebook released that one 3-page document.

Facebook has fallen woefully short of the bare minimum expectations of a company that claims to create welcoming and safe communities online. Facebook still hasn’t  come clean with all of its opposition research, which is what a company that’s seeking to build trust with its users and the public would do, and its top executives mislead and obfuscate, at best.

Facebook continues to change its story regarding the fact that its top executives directed and were clearly aware of what was happening. Instead, they hid more, and they proved to us that they are simply incapable of being responsible stewards of the company and the community of users that they’ve built.

Facebook has sowed division and profited from stoking rage, divisiveness, and bigotry. This is the mess they have created, and they have proven to be entirely incapable of taking responsibility for their actions  and cleaning it up. We stand with MoveOn, Color of Change, and our allies demanding that Facebook do more.

Significant changes need to be made in order to fix Facebook.  Releasing all the opposition research developed to target civil society groups and leaders is just the start. It has now become even more clear that fundamental leadership change to allow for accountability in the operations of the company is absolutely necessary: Mark Zuckerberg should step down as Chairman, Sheryl Sandberg should be removed from the Board of Directors, and three independent members should be added to the Board, including at least one individual who is a privacy and civil liberties expert. Facebook: change your ways, change your leadership, and let the country heal.

Muslim Advocates is a national legal advocacy and educational organization that works on the frontlines of civil rights to guarantee freedom and justice for Americans of all faiths.
