From Waste to Wave: Jaguar Land Rover Launches Surfboard Made From Recycled Plastic
8 September 2017 (Whitley, UK): For almost 70 years Land Rover has transported people across the world’s toughest terrain, but it is now making its first foray into the ocean with the ‘Waste to Wave’ surfboard, created using recycled plastic derived from early clay design models.
With an estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic dumped in oceans every year, taking hundreds of years to decompose, Jaguar Land Rover has strengthened its commitment to achieving its zero waste goal by creating a range of surfboards made wholly from recycled plastic.
The surfboard was created in partnership with SkunkWorks Surf Co, a surf company with a focus on minimising environmental impact, and tested by the English Women’s Open Surfing Champion surfer, Lucy Campbell off the coast of Northern Ireland. It was hand-built to the exact dimensions (5’7 x 18 3/8 x 2 3/16) required by Campbell, who is currently competing on the global circuit. It has carbon fibre rails from the nose and a carbon strip from the tail for additional strength while allowing flex to push through high-intensity manoeuvres.
The surfboard debuts this weekend in London at Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest, a free-to-enter festival exploring the future of mobility. Tech Fest is open from 8 – 10 September at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

Alternate reality, 1 September 2017: Jaguar Land Rover has hired the first of the next generation of electronics and software engineering geniuses following the recent code-breaking recruitment challenge within the Gorillaz app.
Daniel Dunkley, a 23-year-old from Gloucester, UK, is the first successful code-breaker to join Jaguar Land Rover. Daniel left school at 16 and was working as a controls engineer at a local quarry. His coding and software skills are completely self-taught from an early interest in playing computer games at home with his older brother. He starts work on 2 October as a software engineer at Jaguar Land Rover in Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Gorillaz and Jaguar Land Rover will continue the search for world-class talent at Jaguar Land Rover’s inaugural Tech Fest event, from 8-10 September at London’s Central Saint Martins art, design and technology college.
Fans interested in a job at Jaguar Land Rover can visit a pop-up Gorillaz garage to try a puzzle testing technical ability, logical thinking and memory. Want to see if you’ve got what it takes? Solve the puzzle and you’ll skip the initial screening of the Jaguar Land Rover recruitment process.
If you can’t make it to Tech Fest, complete the coding challenge on the Gorillaz app and go straight to interview. The code-breaking puzzle tests real-world skills the new generation of software and engineering talent must have. The challenge remains open worldwide.
Noodle, the virtual band’s guitarist and a Jaguar Land Rover ambassador, said: “Think big and do better, my motto. Stop putting those filters on your food and download this app immediately. The first hire has happened, so get involved and win!”
Daniel Dunkley said: “I’m overwhelmed by how much has happened in the last two months. I read about the coding challenge set by Jaguar Land Rover and Gorillaz on BBC News and decided to have a go. We did the interview by Google Chat then I was invited to Gaydon to talk about my new job. It completely blew me away that I didn’t have to fill out any application forms.
“I was thrilled when they offered me a job! My dad drives a Land Rover Defender so I have always been a fan. I can’t believe I may now get to work on the next generation Defender!”
So far, almost 400,000 people have downloaded the Gorillaz app. Of the 41,000 who have taken the challenge, almost 500 cracked the code.
Alex Heslop, Head of Electrical Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “Daniel is exactly the kind of person we need. Technology companies like Jaguar Land Rover provide an exciting opportunity for the brightest and best. We want to attract top-notch talent in software, cyber systems, app development and graphics.
“We don’t do ordinary and that means hiring extraordinary people. Jaguar Land Rover makes some of the world’s most exciting cars and it needs brilliant people to create them.”
In the spirit of collaborative innovation, Jaguar Land Rover has invited an array of speakers to take part in a series of debates and talks throughout Tech Fest, attended by an audience of global influencers and journalists from four continents. Topics will include the future of diesel, electrification, women in industry and robotics, debated by a range of global industry and consumer experts from around the world. To learn more and see the full speaker line-up, visit www.jaguarlandrover.com
The search for young talent goes on. Interested applicants can download the Gorillaz app now at the iTunes App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gorillaz/id1217997478?mt=8) or Google Play http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Parlophone.Gorillaz&hl=en.

NEW MIXTAPE FEDERAL 3X OUT NOW

Described by The New York Times as his “impressive new mixtape” in which Moneybagg “blends the tough and the comic with an intuitive gift for casually robust rhymes,” and by Billboard as a mixtape that “tracks the expansive progression of Moneybagg,” Federal 3X arrives as the follow-up to Heartless, a February 2017 mixtape that’s now amassed over 126k units of consumption. Following the release of Heartless, XXL named Moneybagg Yo “one of the hottest rappers to look out for in 2017.”

With each lyric delivered in his murky Southern accent, Moneybagg Yo has built Federal 3X on head-nodding ad-libs and visceral depictions of street life. As he explains, the main mission of those lyrics is to encourage his fans to aspire for greatness. “My music motivates you,” Moneybagg Yo says. “It makes you get up and get to it. If you going through something, I’ll get you through your situation.”

Born Demario White on Memphis’s Southside, Moneybagg Yo is the latest addition to his hometown’s roster of veteran hip-hop talent (including artists like 8Ball & MJG, Three 6 Mafia, Yo Gotti, Playa Fly, and Al Kapone). With his stage moniker granted by a classmate, he began honing his lyrical delivery in high school and later invested all his minimal resources into developing his music.

In 2015 Moneybagg Yo made his debut with Federal, a mixtape released by the independent Memphis label N-Less Entertainment. Federal featured his breakout single “I Need a Plug,” which instantly becoming a regional hit. The following year, Moneybagg Yo had his sophomore release with a mixtape titled E.L.O. (Everybody Lives On).

Later in 2016, Moneybagg Yo released his third mixtape, All Gas No Brakes. Taking notice of his fast-rising momentum, Yo Gotti began managing Moneybagg Yo through his Collective Music Group management company. On Halloween of the same year, Yo Gotti and Moneybagg Yo released their collaborative mixtape, 2Federal.

“Everything I do is just federal,” he says. “I’m the voice of the streets. I’m gonna tell it like it is. That’s what the game been missing the whole time. You gotta touch people going through those situations.”

STRIKING MATCHES RETURN WITH NEW EP

STRIKING MATCHES RETURN WITH NEW EP,SHAMELESS, SET FOR RELEASE ON SEPTEMBER 22

Duo Will Join JOHNNYSWIM On European & North American Tour Dates

Run Includes October 19 Concert At The Novo In L.A. And

November 6 & 7 Shows At NYC’s Irving Plaza

“A perfectly balanced duo. They both have incredible skills. They both have wonderful voices. The harmonies are fabulous. And they play the heck out of the guitar…” – NPR Music

Following the success of their 2015 debut album, Nothing But The Silence – which has racked up more than 10 million cumulative streams worldwide – Striking Matches return with Shameless, set for release on September 22 via Capitol Records. The four original songs, produced by Kennedy Karate (Børns), will give fans a taste of the duo’s forthcoming album, which is due out in 2018.

Striking Matches said, “Our new music originates from the two years we spent on the road touring our first album. During that time, we changed as musicians, and as people. Out of it came the need to create something that felt sonically unique to us. Pushing ourselves as creators was terrifying and exhilarating, but ultimately necessary. We hope it inspires our listeners to step outside of what is comfortable, in order to progress. With this new music, we needed to be honest, we needed to be brave, and we needed to be shameless.”

The duo – comprising Sarah Zimmermann and Justin Davis – will be joining JOHNNYSWIM on the “Take The World Tour,” which launches on September 19 in Amsterdam. The North American leg kicks off at The Fillmore in San Francisco on October 18. It includes a show at the Novo in Los Angeles (October 19) and a two-night stand and New York City’s Irving Plaza (November 6 & 7). See below for itinerary.

Nothing But The Silence, which was produced by T Bone Burnett, won acclaim in the U.S. and abroad. NPR’s “World Café” hailed Striking Matches as an “Artist to Watch” andBuzzfeed named the duo as one of the “Artists You Need In Your Life.” USA Today said, “Sarah Zimmermann and Justin Davis give off sparks as singers and writers, but they’re even hotter guitarists. Incendiary.” American Songwriter observed, “these songs crackle and sizzle, walking on a tightrope between pop, rock, country and blues.” Nothing But The Silence debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes UK Country Chart and several tracks were featured on BBC Radio 2’s playlist. The duo sold-out multiple headline tours of the U.K. and took International Act of the Year honors at the British Country Music Awards in 2015.

Zimmermann grew up outside Philadelphia and had mastered the clarinet, violin and guitar before middle school. Davis, who is from Atlanta, began playing guitar at an early age, inspired by the music he heard at home – Sam Cooke, Petula Clark, Eric Clapton, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Steely Dan. The two began working together when a professor at Belmont University in Nashville paired them up for class projects. Soon they were penning originals together. Nine of their songs were performed in the first four seasons of the hit television show “Nashville.” In addition to numerous headline outings, Striking Matches have opened for Train and toured the U.S. with The Secret Sisters on a co-headline tour.

Manhattan Institute Awards Innovative Entrepreneurs for Their Creative Solutions to Social Problems

NEW YORK, NY (9/8/17) — The Manhattan Institute will host its annual Social Entrepreneurship Awards ceremony and dinner in New York City on November 29, at which it will recognize the non-government civil society leaders who have developed innovative approaches to helping those in need. This year’s winners include those providing building materials to low-income contractors and homeowners, teaching advanced mathematics to disadvantaged students, assisting the formerly incarcerated with reentry and entrepreneurship, and creating a supportive mentorship community for kids and teens.
The $25,000 Richard Cornuelle Award for Social Entrepreneurship, designed to recognize entrepreneurs across the country who are working toward innovative solutions to our nation’s most pressing social problems, will be awarded to four organizations which share a commitment to helping those in need. The winners are:
Community Warehouse, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit, runs a members-only retail store that sells donated construction materials and is partially staffed with formerly incarcerated persons.

New York City’s Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM) targets talented disadvantaged students with advanced mathematics instruction, with the goal of boosting their chances of admission at the city’s selective public high schools.

Rising Foundations and The First 72+ in New Orleans work to help the formerly incarcerated reenter society and pursue entrepreneurship with a “business incubator.”

New City Kids, based in Jersey City, NJ, lives up to its mission of “loving kids for change” by providing a structured, mentorship-focused environment ruled by a personal concern for each child.

Howard Husock, Director of the Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, said, “The Cornuelle Awards once again demonstrate the vitality of American civil society and its capacity to address some of our most challenging social problems: the integration of ex-offenders, the improvement of low-income neighborhoods, the teaching of science and math to disadvantaged students, and steering at-risk youth toward positive life choices.”
This year’s $100,000 William E. Simon Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Social Entrepreneurship honors Steven McDonald, an NYPD officer paralyzed in the line of duty who went on to travel the world sharing a message of forgiveness, faith, and community, until his death earlier this year. His story is that of the “everyman” social entrepreneur, working for and inspiring others, regardless of the hardships he faced. Steven’s wife, Patti Ann, will be accepting the award on his behalf.
