MILK & HONEY TAPAS

”If you don’t love this industry [Food and Beverage] then don’t do it … the amount of time is overwhelming.” – Al Rojas

By Vaughn Lowery

Nearly twenty years ago, Al Rojas received some investment capital from his father (died from cancer 25 years ago) to become a restaurateur. After years of successfully running Santa Barbara’s widely popular Alcazar Tapas Bar, he commenced to sink his teeth into another endeavor – Milk & Honey Tapas [MHT]. This eclectic, snug cafe with curbside dining provides an array of mystical libations and mouth watering snacks for foodies.

Specialty cocktails are their strong suit; however, the drinks are so intoxicating that you’ll have to taste their menu. After one drink, we were buzzing like busy bees in the hive. Hence, we started with flash-fried kale chips topped with manchego cheese and an order of Prosciutto Bundles stuffed with goat cheese. Yummy. Next up, we ordered PB&J Sliders (sirloin sliders, peanut butter, raspberry jam, Applewood smoked bacon) and Honey Lamb Pops (char broiled lamb chops; teriyaki, honey, butter, shallot, brown sugar sauce) – yes, we licked both our fingers and the bones. One of the most intriguing indigenous dishes we tried was Por-Que Pig?! (pulled pork shoulder, creamed pasilla chiles, garlic cilantro rice, manchego cheese, fresh cilantro, tomato; tomatillo cream sauce). Definitely not one of the most attractive items on the menu, but it sure was the most delightful – we scraped our bowls. For dessert, we received their house funnel cake alongside of a dark cup of coffee.

Rojas boasts of being a globetrotter (Spain, France, UK, Grenada, Copenhagen, Montreal) and reminds us that his infused assortments were inspired by his travels. Adorning smart specs and possessing a charismatic personality, no wonder his wait staff is equally professional and attentive – his power to lead permeates the air. Something that his father instilled in him, “Treat everyone equally [no matter what their position in life may be].” Moreover, the fun-loving GM and crew kept the dimly lit dinner service packed like a can of sardines.

In short, this is one of the best tapas and sips we have put our lips on in a long time. In fact, Milk & Honey Tapas rivals some of the top restaurants in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. If you possess an appetite for tangy handcrafted concoctions paired with savory bites, then this place will literally blow your wig back.

CARR WINERY SANTA BARBARA

“Work hard, play hard and source really good fruit… it all starts from the fruit!” – Jessica Carr

By Vaughn Lowery

Since 1999, Owner/Winemaker/Sommelier Ryan Carr and wife Jessica Carr have been developing an impeccable assortment of Pinot wines – crisp, juicy and delicious. Established in downtown Santa Barbara, their main tasting room is inside of a quonset hut. If the corrugated structure doesn’t enthrall you to enter, Jessica’s warm smile and innate ability to promote her product will have you become a member of their 800+ wine club. The decor is modern yet industrial with a saloon-ish style bar with wine on tap. Adjacent is an outdoor comfy patio where you and a group of friends can soak up a session while basking in the sunshine.

Throughout the space are stacked barrels, workers fermenting grapes with monthly rotating provocative art pieces scattered throughout the walls on consignment. Everyone knows grapes love art and when the fruit is happy so is the wine.

Ryan wasn’t available for our private tasting but his presence was prevalent. During harvest, he’s out in the fields picking and sorting fruits. He and Jessica met at the University of Arizona about 20 years ago – he majored in graphic design and she in communications. It was inevitable that Ryan designed the ultra chique labels and she wrote many of their outward facing materials.

Nothing can stand in the way of their success with such an immense passion for winemaking and a strong business acumen. And, the positive reviews alongside of 90+ scores keep rolling in. Named one of Six California Wineries You Should Know About.

“Carr produces polished, authoritative Pinot Noirs from various Sta. Rita Hills vineyards.” – S.H., Wine Enthusiast

They started with only 15 people almost two decades ago; now with 2 locations and a wine management company (early September they handled the grand opening for sister brand CrossHatch Wines) – they’re invincible. Presently, they have no children, but obviously the grapes are their babies. Angel is their Rottweiler/Shepherd 2yro dog and was rescued from an overcrowded litter. Evidently, the Carrs have huge hearts and it’s known throughout the city. Everyone we encountered both inside and outside the winery respects their philanthropic endeavors. In fact, they’re always giving back to local charities.

Moreover, this eclectic outfit is host to a plethora of music events where indie rock to reggae bands showcase their talent on Friday nights from 6-8pm.

Be on the lookout this Halloween for their costume competiton where they will have a live DJ, small bites as well as spooky decorations. And if that doesn’t float your boat, you may want to check out their WOGA (wine + yoga) which is rumored to be held on their outdoor patio. Other honorable mentions include their indie pop-up market which will showcase local artisanal made goods and their 46 wine lockers – customers can store 4, 8, 16 and up to 72 cases per rental.

It’s so refreshing to come across such a winery ambiance only 82 miles from central Los Angeles. We drove up in the Lexus GS F 10th Anniversary Limited Edition to add to this whimsical wine experience.

We’re kicking off the return of live music with three members from local bluegrass group, The Salty Strings. This group transcends the boundaries of traditional bluegrass music, adding percussive elements and blending notes of Latin and jazz.

They’re known to put on an engaging live performance filled with fast-picking originals and old-timey favorites, and we’re so looking forward to having them in the winery. Salty Strings will be pluckin’ alongside the art 6-8:30 PM.

GUS HARPER

Based in Los Angeles, Harper has been creating and selling art around the world for the past 18 years. His work is moving, capturing your eyes and mind with geometric patterns, captivating iridescence, and immense detail. “Like the best of Pop, their effect is to awaken us to the strangeness of the ordinary, to present the most routine encumbrances of our daily lives as almost miraculous apparitions.”

*Carr Vineyards & Winery is a small, handcrafted winery producing 4500 cases in downtown Santa Barbara. All of the wines made by Carr are sourced from Santa Barbara County vineyards and are made in a traditional winemaking style to capture the essence of the grape varietal and region. The vast microclimates of Santa Barbara County allow the winery to produce several wines including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sangiovese, Grenache, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Carr Winery has two locations for guests to enjoy wine tasting, wines by the glass and wine on tap: The Barrel Room in downtown Santa Barbara and The Warehouse in Santa Ynez.

16YROLD AND KILLY TEAM UP FOR “NO ROMANCE” AVAILABLE NOW

RELEASE NEW VISUAL FOR “NO ROMANCE”

NEW YORK, NY (September 29, 2017) — Highly sought-after Soundcloud artist & producer 16YROLD and Toronto rapper KILLY share the music video for their new collaborative single “No Romance.” Watch the visual HERE which premiered on Pigeons & Planes earlier today.

This compact and chaotic banger pairs 16YROLD’s maniacally melodic musical vision with KILLY’s warped and warbling raps. The two rising stars figure prominently in the visual, causing trouble on Rodeo Drive and wilding out inside of a claustrophobic space.
It’s a devilishly distorted and dynamic clip worthy of the track’s unpredictability.
Get “No Romance” HERE

By his junior year in high school, Ohio-born and New York-based producer and rapper 16YROLD had made a dent in the Soundcloud scene from his bedroom with hypnotic, airy, and unpredictable productions. After unofficially remixing countless prominent smashes, he scored a viral hit producing NESSLY’s “Rita Ora,” which racked up over 1.3M Soundcloud plays before going on to cook up beats for everyone from Famous Dex to Lil Yachty. The Fader described him best writing, “You can feel the passion in this bedroom trap.” By 2017, he amassed a formidable catalog and logged miles on the road supporting both Desiigner and 21 Savage. The buzz for the 18-year-old had reached critical mass, and Victor Victor Worldwide signed him in late 2017.

New York, NY, September 24, 2017 – On Saturday, September 23, the 2017 Global Citizen Festival marked its sixth year on the Great Lawn of New York’s Central Park. World and business leaders, non-profit organizations, socially conscious artists, and thousands of Global Citizens united to further the world’s progress toward achieving the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and ending extreme poverty by 2030.

The Festival featured headlining performances by Stevie Wonder, Green Day, The Killers, The Lumineers, and featuring the Chainsmokers, with special guest performances by Pharrell Williams, Big Sean, Andra Day, and Alessia Cara.

More than 60,000 Global Citizens attended and millions watched live through premier broadcast partner MSNBC and online via YouTube and Twitter.

The Festival acted as a culmination of Global Citizen Week, a series of more than 30 public, advocacy-driven events and digital activations that took place across New York City from September 17 through the 23 and reflected the international advocacy organization’s continued effort to engage people in the movement to end extreme poverty.

Ahead of Global Citizen Week, Global Citizens took 1.6 million actions over two months that secured 29 commitments, 55 announcements and 13 calls to action, totaling $3.2 billion, which are set to affect the lives of 221 million people.

Together, these commitments and announcements are worth $3.2 billion, and are set to reach 221 million people, and put the world on track to achieving the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Global Citizens will continue to use these commitments to hold governments and businesses accountable to deliver on their promises in the years to come.

TOP CAMPAIGN VICTORIES

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT: Accenture, Citi, Ernst & Young, and Procter & Gamble each committed to source $100 million from women-owned businesses — a majority of whom will be based in the developing world. This $400 million commitment will be delivered through our partners at WEConnect International, bringing to $1 billion the total that has been committed on the Global Citizen stage from corporates towards women’s economic empowerment in the past 12 months.

HIV/AIDS: Global Citizen partners Johnson & Johnson commits to accelerate the healthcare company’s HIV vaccine and announced that for the first time it is going into late stage human clinical trials. It is the world’s first ever “global” vaccine, which means it can protect against all strains of HIV. In early stage studies the vaccine has shown 100% success rate.

FAMINE: U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Delaware), as a member of the Appropriations Committee announced that encouraged by Global Citizens taking over 60,000 actions, his colleagues in the Senate have proposed $311.5 million more in funds for International Disaster Assistance compared to last year.

YAZIDI JUSTICE: Three years since the genocide was committed by ISIS, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, Matthew Rycroft, announced that the UK led the UN Security Council to a unanimous vote this week on the decision to set up a UN Investigation Team to pursue justice for the Yazidis. The UN resolution on ISIS accountability was described as a “long overdue first step” by the UN Office for the High Commissioner on Human Rights. This comes after an 18 month campaign and over 100,000 actions taken by Global Citizens.

TOP ACCOUNTABILITY UPDATES

FRANCE: Thanks to Global Citizen’s two year long campaign, and nearly half a million actions, including those of Global Citizen and Global Partnership for Education Ambassador Rihanna, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that for the first time ever a G7 country — France — was to co-host the Global Partnership for Education replenishment with an African country — Senegal in order to raise $3.1 billion to provide 870 million children with vital education.

GHANA: President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, committed on the Festival stage to end child marriage. The newly elected President inherited the initiative to end child marriage in the country from his predecessor, so this stage moment provided confirmation that the new president has officially committed to continue with the National Strategic Framework on Ending Child Marriage in Ghana. As part of this announcement, the President also reaffirmed his pledge to provide universal free secondary education.

FAMINE: Executive Director of the World Food Program, David Beasley, confirmed that $575 million of $990 million committed by Congress in May — a commitment helped by 49,291 actions taken by Global Citizens — has been released to the WFP and others to immediately fight the famine. He then issued a powerful call to action to Global Citizens, revealing that after years of progress, the number of hungry people in the world is going up.

Proud partners of Global Citizen Week included: Gucci and CHIME FOR CHANGE, MSNBC & Comcast NBCUniversal, Live Nation, Johnson & Johnson, Citi, HP, Cadillac, T-Mobile, iHeartMedia, NYC Parks, lululemon, P&G, The New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, Bira 91, Universal Music Group, the Empire State Building, Forbes, Guardian US, Omaze, TOMS, and Tribeca Enterprises.

Proud partners of the 2017 Global Citizen Festival included: presenting partner GUCCI and CHIME FOR CHANGE, premier media partner MSNBC & Comcast NBCUniversal, entertainment partner Live Nation, global health partner Johnson & Johnson, and other major partners Citi, HP, Cadillac, T-Mobile, iHeartMedia, and NYC Parks.

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST BLACK BADGE

By Vaughn Lowery × Benjamin Reese

A few years ago, Rolls-Royce began noticing that they were in somewhat of a pickle. They’ve unarguably been building the ‘ultimate luxury car’ and have been the leader in that category for over 100+ years; but as of late, the company learned the thing that they do best – isn’t exactly what people want anymore.

The fresh wave of Rolls-Royce consumers are emerging ‘fast money’ elite within a global society whom demand more than just luxury from a brand that purely builds luxury cars. Not coincidentally, Rolls-Royce found a way to keep us in the dark about this, and in doing so created the ‘Black Badge’ edition to answer our cries.

The Ghost Black Badge in the short-wheel base platform is much more athletic and dare we say ‘naughtier’ than in standard configuration. On the exterior, nearly all of the traditional chrome has been blackened including the retractable spirit of ecstasy, window trim, wheels and grille. Although It might appear subtle to the common eye, it has a lot to say to the purist, so for the manufacturer this is a win-win.

The engineering team realized what their job was – keep the class, create the hustle and make it fearless. From the ground up, the frame has been recalibrated to make the Ghost feel like you’re floating on a cloud while cruising down Sunset Boulevard to driving on rails while sprinting across Mulholland Drive. Multi-layered carbon alloy composite 21-inch wheels were designed around the idea of exotic italian super cars from the 70’s era and the tires have low-rolling resistance characteristics. The brakes alone are an outstanding feature on this series and come well-outfitted with energy regeneration, dynamic/cornering control and a host of additional features.

For millennial investors, the Ghost Black Badge also receives an extra 50 or so horsepower pushing output to over 600hp. On the inside, performance and luxury is infused using technical weave on the dashboard; lambswool floor mats; a starlight headliner, which can blink you into a dream and a bespoke premium audio system pumping out 600 watts of youthfulness.

Our Ghost Black Badge arrived in piano black over an extremely irresistable cobalt blue interior with contrasting arctic white stitching which appeared better than the pinstripes on a Zegna suit. The individual seat configuration alongside a cutting-edge infotainment system, housing a 20.5GB hard drive disc for storing music files plus night vision.

The Ghost Black Badge will set you back a mere $416,605 USD, but considering that a Lamborghini will cost more and you can’t bring your friends along for the ride or even hang out in the back seat – it’s nothing short of astonishing. And to imagine, this is the first time we’ve witnessed Rolls-Royce show us their other hand!

2017 INFINITI Q70L

By Vaughn Lowery × Anthony Sovinsky

Infiniti has an unwavering dedication to the highest levels of performance and luxury. This is noticeably true for their flagship sedan – the Q70. The Q70 is available in the following options: a standard-wheel-base-only hybrid, two engine options (3.7L V6 and 5.6L V8) and your choice of all-wheel or rear-wheel drive. We tested the Premium Select Edition (approximately $71,000). It’s Infinti’s long wheel base version aka Q70L with rear wheel drive.

The aggressive hood and grille may hint that there is an overqualified power plant to catapult the extended sedan. Swift contours of the body look as if it’s built to burn through the atmosphere with little effort. An exemplary feature that really sets this particular model apart is its length, measuring 202 inches. The designers added 6 inches to the rear door while only adding about 100lbs to the curb weight. The additional room intensifies a more ergonomic back seat passenger experience without causing an adverse effect on the other elements. Moreover, the vehicle profile is much more attractive because the front and rear windows appear to be identical in size.

Infiniti’s Q70L can carry its weight (4174lbs) quite comfortably. Powered by a hefty 5.6L 32-valve V8 cranking out 420hp with 417 pound-ft of torque (0 to 60 mph in 5.5 Sec). The robust engine is a silky smooth 7-speed automatic adaptive shift controlled (ASC) transmission. The driver adaptive learning algorithm senses driving style and adapts accordingly. Or if you care to fiddle with its performance, select manual shift mode with gearshifts and downshift rev matching.

Elegant fenders enunciate 20 inch aluminum alloy wheels with all season tires. They’re bonded to an independent front and rear suspension as well as front and rear stabilizer bars for a flawless ride. High performance sport brakes with 4 piston front and 2 piston rear calipers brings the vehicle to a prompt halt.

Upon going into the cabin, you are welcomed by graphite semi-aniline leather seating with contrast seat piping, aluminum interior trim, Japanese ash wood accents, suede-like headliner and illuminated kick plates. Up-front are 10-way power and climate controlled seats with lumbar support. The steering wheel is fully adjustable with power tilt and a telescopic steering column for a tailored driving experience. Moreover, 16-speaker Bose Studio Surround sound system adds up with integrated headrest speakers on front seats.

The “L” in Q70L could take on many different meanings: large, luxurious or legroom. The extra 6 inches in rear cabin make you feel like you are on a first-class overseas flight with the ability to stretch. Even with the front seat fully reclined, there’s still considerable legroom for an average sized adult. Furthermore, the center armrest folds down, housing two cup holders and controls for the heated back seats.

Lastly, what is luxury without technology?Infiniti Connection is an arrangement of digital applications and remote services which gives you a direct access to the world around you. NavTraffic and NavWeather provide detailed traffic data as well as sporadic weather updates. The Around View monitor projects through the 8-inch infotainment display. This advanced technology makes parking easier. Four cameras are stationed on all sides to create a 360-degree birds-eye view.

For just over $70,000 you will be in both the lap of luxury and performance. As one of the most prolific Japanese cars, it’s perfect for a sophisticated family or an upper level executive who likes to be driven round.

Max Brallier appearing at NYC Comic Con for The Last Kids on Earth series (10/8/17)

‘THE LAST KIDS ON EARTH’ SERIES REACHES ONE MILLION COPIES IN PRINT AND IS OPTIONED FOR TELEVISION

Atomic Cartoons to adapt New York Times bestselling series for TV, The Last Kids on Earth and the Nightmare King hits bookshelves today

Max Brallier’s New York Times bestselling The Last Kids on Earth series reaches a groundbreaking 1 million copies in print with the release of the third book, The Last Kids on Earth and the Nightmare King from Viking, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers. This comes on the heels of Thunderbird Entertainment’s announcement that their Emmy Award-nominated animation studio Atomic Cartoons has optioned the rights to bring the series to screens everywhere. Filled with wisecracking kids, crazy gadgets, and a lifetime supply of zombies and giant-sized monsters, The Last Kids on Earth is has been described as Diary of a Wimpy Kid meets The Walking Dead.

Brallier is on board as executive producer and writer for the animated series, alongside Atomic Cartoon’s Jennifer McCarren and Matthew Berkowitz. Thunderbird Entertainment is a rapidly growing Vancouver-based multiplatform entertainment company with offices in Los Angeles, Toronto and London. Thunderbird’s most recent projects include the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, hit Canadian comedy Kim’s Convenience and the animated Netflix original series Beat Bugs, featuring reimagined songs from the Beatles catalogue featuring artists such as Sia, Eddie Vedder and P!nk.

A rich blend of humor with illustrations by Australian comic artist Douglas Holgate, The Last Kids on Earth has received three starred reviews and was called ‘Terrifyingly fun’ by Jeff Kinney, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid. With sales of each book increasing exponentially every year, the series draws even the most reluctant readers in with its ‘likable cast, lots of adventure, and gooey, oozy monster slime galore’ (Booklist). The Last Kids on Earth is quickly becoming the next big series to watch with at least two more books still to come.

Max Brallier is a renaissance man in children’s book world, with a keen ear for writing pitch perfect middle grade voice. Before he was a New York Times bestselling author, he worked in marketing at St. Martin’s Press, and developed adventure games for the website Poptropica, a virtual world of games for kids with millions of users per day. He has also written for Cartoon Network licensed properties including Adventure Time, Regular Show and Uncle Grampa. With The Last Kids on Earth Brallier takes his talents to the written page, where the main characters are independent, geeky, zombie fighters that are ‘hilarious and full of heart’ (Boys’ Life).

Inspired by spending his own childhood reading in his backyard treehouse, Brallier’s main character Jack Sullivan and his squad of friends reside in a tricked-out treehouse of their own after a monster-zombie apocalypse hits town. Along the way they encounter friendly monsters (and some evil ones too), treating life like a video game by imagining obstacles as feats. Brallier observes that children often think this way too, whether it’s fear of a test in school or gathering confidence to raise your hand to ask a question in class. “Kids really respond to Jack’s confidence and slightly self-deprecating voice,” Brallier says. “It means so much to me to see the dog-earred pages of my books and connect with the kids who can’t wait to hear how the series will end.”

This September Brallier will visit over 8,000 students in schools across the country on a national tour. Penguin met the excitement with a robust marketing and advertising campaign with over 50 million impressions, and gave readers an opportunity to be entered in the acknowledgements of the next Last Kids on Earth title, releasing in 2018.

Max Brallier is the New York Times bestselling author of more than thirty books and games, including the middle-grade series The Last Kids on Earth. Under the pen name Jack Chabert, Max is the creator of the Eerie Elementary series for Scholastic Books and author of the New York Times bestselling graphic novel Poptropica: Mystery of the Map. He is the creator of Galactic Hot Dogs, a middle-grade adventure series, and has written books for properties including LEGO, Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Steven Universe. Max has written for adults, including the pick-your-own-path series Can YOU Survive the Zombie Apocalypse? and an entry in the zombie anthology Nights of the Living Dead. In the olden days, Max was a game designer for the virtual world Poptropica and worked in marketing at St. Martin’s Press. Max lives in New York with his wife, Alyse, and daughter Lila.
