Paul McCartney's album via UMe for use by 360 Magazine

Paul McCartney – McCartney I II III Box Set

Written, performed, and produced entirely by Paul McCartney, his three eponymous career-spanning solo albums (1970’s McCartney, 1980’s McCartney II, and 2020’s McCartney III) will now be packaged together and available in one special boxset for the first time.

McCartney I II III box set will be available in three different formats – Limited Edition Color Vinyl, Black Vinyl Edition, and CD – each including three special photo prints with notes from Paul about each album. Bookending 50 years of unparalleled work, each album demonstrates Paul McCartney’s restless creativity and adventurous artistic spirit. McCartney, the Number One Album was Paul’s first solo album released in 1970 and features timeless tracks “Every Night” and “Junk,” along with the immortal classic “Maybe I’m Amazed.” This album saw a global music superstar pioneer a novel homespun approach to recording that would, in time, become a sought-after sound and the highly influential precursor to the “lo-fi” alternative genre.

Just as McCartney marked the end of an era with Paul’s first release after leaving the biggest band in history, Paul did it again in 1980, this time signaling the end of 70s rock giants Wings. Taking a fresh approach to things, Paul wrote, performed, and produced the avant-garde masterpiece McCartney IIwhich reached Number One in the UK, and Number 3 in the US, producing such classics as “Coming Up,” “Waterfalls,” and “Temporary Secretary.”

With McCartney III Paul went back to basics again to create some of his most revealing work to date. Released in December 2020, just two years after Paul’s Billboard-topping Egypt Station album, “Rockdown,” saw Paul turn unexpected time on his hands into an opportunity to get into the studio on his own. An intimate and loose record featuring “Find My Way” and the now live favorite “Women and Wives,” McCartney III features Paul’s melodic gift at its forefront throughout. Upon release, McCartney III charted at Number One on the UK’s Official Album Charts and Number One on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart.

Stunna Gambino’s made a career out of speaking up. Matteo Bocelli × Close

Singer/songwriter Matteo Bocelli rang in the new year with a brand new single and video of “Close.” Bocelli’s sensitive and passionate nature is encapsulated through “Close,” where he proclaims, “it feels like heaven when I hold ya/so I will never let you go/and when the worlds too much to shoulder/just keep me close close close close.” Listen HERE.

The music video for the new single was shot at the 2000-year-old Arena di Verona in Italy. This iconic Roman amphitheater has seen other noteworthy artists perform there, such as, Paul McCartney, One Direction and Maria Callas. The historic location for the heartfelt song that is “Close” sends off an eternal essence. Throughout the video, Bocelli roams the streets of Italy and plays with his band. Matteo Bocelli spoke on the track, stating, “I had the pleasure of writing ‘Close’ with Stuart Crichton and Wrabel this past year. This was such a fun song to write. I love the upbeat tempo and vibrant melody. I hope it brings some happiness and maybe even the urge to let loose and dance a little bit, just as it does for me! After enduring so much time apart from friends and family over the last couple of years, I would love for this song to become a hymn of hope.”

Bocelli will be featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show on this upcoming Thursday, January 20, where he will be performing. Bocelli, the son of opera icon Andrea Bocelli, was a special guest for his fathers U.S. arena tour. The tour has seen two Madison Square Garden shows and returns back on February 20 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

This artist finished out the year of 2021 with a showing of his single “Solo” on December 31 on Good Morning America. Like the music video setting for “Close,” Bocelli also gave a renowned performance of “Solo” from Arena di Verona, watch HERE. Before appearing on GMA, Bocelli gave a series of performances in 2021 while appearing on the PBS special In Performance at the White House: Spirit of the Season, TODAY, and CNN”s New Year’s Eve Special.

Tyler Posey is a Santa Monica born, Santa Clarita raised actor and pop-punk/rock musician best known for his roles as Scott McCall on Teen Wolf and the lead role of Aidan the zombie-horror movie Alone (2020). In addition to his successful acting career, he’s been striving for an equally successful music career.

Throughout the last decade Posey has been in multiple bands, including Lost in Kostko (You’re Gonna Need A Towel [EP] 2011), PVMNTS (Better Days [EP] 2018), and Five North (Scumbag [EP] 2020). During the pandemic he made the decision to go solo with his next EP, enjoying the artistic freedom that came from being on your own. Posey has been working alongside the record label Big Noise Music Group, the same label his band Five North (Tyler Posey and Kyle Murphy) worked with, for his debut solo EP titled DRUGS.

Before those two singles for his debut EP, Tyler released the single “This Luv Sux” with artist’s Phem and Audio Chateau. “This Luv Sux” was his introduction to solo music, a song about a bad relationship, the alternative punk sound heard throughout the rest of his music.

DRUGS, to be released later this year, is the EP that is home to the two singles Posey has released so far this year, “Happy” and “Shut Up” (feat. Phem and Travis Barker). The two singles set up the tone and theme of the EP, which is a raw, honest story about Posey’s struggle with drugs and becoming sober in the form of pop-punk songs.

In the single “Happy,” during the second verse he sings, “Yeah, I know how to nod / Nodding, I’m half awake / With my eyes rolling back, can’t you tеll I’m okay?” Posey told NME that this is a reference to the “drug term called nodding out,” stating the verse is, “a very violent visual of somebody [who’s] really fucked up on drugs.” These types of experiences and feelings are what Posey is bringing to his debut EP, using as a way to explain his struggles and emotions.

This Fall Posey will join his fellow Big Noise artists Mod Sun and girlfriends on the Internet Killed the Rockstar Tour. The tour will travel to 15 cities around the US beginning September 5, 2021.

Scott Hirsch – Much Too Late

Musician Scott Hirsch today heralds the announcement of his third solo album Windless Day with a new song “Much Too Late” released today. Hirsch, an original member and current collaborator of Hiss Golden Messenger, serves as both producer and artist for Windless Day which comes out October 8 via Echo Magic Records with Soundly Music. The album is available digitally, CD, and on vinyl (black and iridescent pearlized purple). Preorders are available starting today.

“Much Too Late” features Carol Dennis, Jade Hendrix, and Sharon Hendrix on backing vocals. “When I moved back to California six years ago I wanted to learn more about singing and found Jade Hendrix,” Hirsch says, “She was such a positive force and gave me the confidence to sing my own songs. You’ll hear Jade’s voice on all three of my records, and when I started recording her, I carried on about how much I love the vocal stylings of the late 70s Christian-era Bod Dylan records. When I put on Street Legal, she kind of laughed and said, ‘Oh that’s my godmother, Carolyn Dennis!’ This time around, Jade suggested, instead of borrowing her style, why don’t we just get Carol herself? My head exploded!” He adds, “We recorded deep in the pandemic, and it felt like quite a feat to make the session happen. But it was worth it, and truly one of the highlights of my life to have these magical voices accompany my own.”

A founding member of Hiss Golden Messenger, Hirsch was integral to the band’s formative years in the studio and on the road. His sonic imprint remains on their productions; most recently mixing the forthcoming album Quietly Blowing It. He also has recorded and mixed Follow The Music, the Grammy-nominated record by the legendary folk-singer Alice Gerrard and has produced and played on records by William Tyler, Mikael Jorgensen of Wilco, Orpheo McCord of Edward Sharpe, and Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear.

Honoring Mary Wilson’s Memory – Black Music × Pride Month

Legendary artist/author and original and founding member of the Supremes, Mary Wilson was also known as a tireless advocate for the Black and LGBTQ+ communities. 

 

The Motown/UMe April release of Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition represented an ongoing effort to honor her memory and her passion for celebrating life through music. Her work to raise awareness of the need for tolerance and equality is especially poignant during June, which is dedicated to Black Music Month and Pride Month; her music provides a fitting backdrop to celebrations and events — from intimate events to large-scale community celebrations.  

 

Ms. Wilson believed in the power of music, especially the joy The Supremes brought to the world. She carried on that legacy throughout her career and right up to the days before her untimely passing in February, just weeks before the release of Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition.  

 

“The music was inclusive. It didn’t matter who you were, the music touched your soul. Music, to me, brought all the souls together. I’ve always said that Motown was an ambassador for love and for friendship because it brought people together.” – Mary Wilson in a 2015 interview with Pride Source.

Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition was originally announced to celebrate her 77th Birthday and honor her history and legacy with the first of her album projects. Ms. Wilson, who retained ownership of her solo recordings, wanted to make the album – and much more – available to her many fans around the world. Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition is a newly compiled version of her solo album, originally released by Motown in 1979, that will now be available on all digital platforms for the first time. Added to the album are eight incredible bonus tracks, four of them unreleased, including the legendary tracks recorded as a follow-up to the album produced by Gus Dudgeon (Elton John, Joan Armatrading, Chris Rea, et al). Featured as the lead single is a brand-new song, “Why Can’t We All Get Along,” produced by Richard Davis and co-written with Angelo Bond, who previously had great success as a co-writer with General Johnson and Greg Perry for “Bring The Boys Home.”

 

Mary Wilson, who had many fond memories around recording her solo debut, was so excited about the release of this album that, after finalizing details with UMe, she created an impromptu “teaser,” posting what was to be her final YouTube video. “I finally decided how to work with Universal, and they are going to release new Mary Wilson recordings,” she said. “Yes! At last! At last,” adding that the expanded version of the album, known by her and to fans as “Red Hot,” referring to its lead single, will include the Dudgeon productions – and something new. “It was four wonderful songs that were never released… and I also have some other songs, some surprising new songs… Thank you Universal for chiming in with me and helping this come true. Hopefully some of that will be out on my birthday, March 6th… I’ve got my fingers crossed.”

 

Sadly, the world mourned the sudden passing of Mary Wilson on February 8th, which also marked the 56th anniversary of The Supremes’ #1 hit, “Stop! In the Name Of Love.” She was a world-renowned singer, best-selling author, a humanitarian, artist rights advocate, philanthropist, cultural ambassador for the U.S. appointed by Colin Powell, but she was best known as a “Supreme.” She was the co-founder of the original Supremes, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, which signed to Motown in January 1961, making this year their 60th anniversary. The group broke down barriers by becoming the world’s most popular female singing trio, with an unprecedented string of 12 number one hits, 33 top 40 singles, a record breaking 5 consecutive number ones, and the first number one album for a female group. Mary Wilson is the only member with the group from their signing in 1961 to their disbanding in 1977. Their legendary history is the foundation for dozens of books, movies, and even three Broadway musicals.

 

But the often-overlooked history is of the solo careers of Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. Ballard had previously released an album on ABC Records while, upon leaving the Supremes, Mary Wilson released her self-titled solo album debut on Motown, her label for the previous 18 years. Mary Wilson had the potential of becoming a dance classic. Famed Motown Producer Hal Davis, known for #1 hits on the Jackson 5, Thelma Houston and Diana Ross crafted a lush disco album for Wilson, with six dance tracks and a mid-tempo ballad. Wilson recorded the album while pregnant with her youngest son, Raphael, and for the album’s cover shoot she was wrapped in a jacket to hide the pregnancy.

 

“Red Hot” was the obvious lead single. But just prior to the release of the album the infamous Disco Demolition Night took place at Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 12, 1979. The “Disco Sucks” movement impacted the release of Mary Wilson, and the single reached #85 on the dance chart and #95 on the R&B chart. This new collection retrieves for history the song’s rare 12” and 7” mixes, which were unique from the album’s version. Despite being loved by fans, and the release of a second single, “Pick Up the Pieces” in the U.K., the Mary Wilson album did not get the recognition it deserved.

 

In 1980, Mary Wilson headed to Europe to record with Elton John’s producer, Gus Dudgeon. The late Dudgeon, who started as Decca Records’ in-house recording engineer, became a key creative collaborator with Elton John, producing seven No. 1 albums, in addition to creating masterworks with David Bowie, Joan Armatrading, Chris Rea, and many more.

 

Wilson wrote in her second autobiography, Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together, “I was very excited about these four songs. It wasn’t the formula disco of my first album. Two of the songs were big ballads. The other two were rock and roll in the style of Tina Turner’s mid-eighties hits; I was certainly ahead of the time.” Three of the four songs were never released. The fourth song, “You Dance My Heart Around the Stars,” first made available in 2015 on a collection of the co-writer’s, Steve Kalinich, a frequent collaborator of the Beach Boys, is considered one of Wilson’s finest performances. 

 

In 1986 Mary Wilson wrote her best-selling autobiography, Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme, followed by two more books, Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together, and Supreme Glamour. Although Mary continued to record and release music through the rest of her career, fans have continually requested to hear this music. These songs remain among the most requested items in the Motown catalog.

 

While recording more music over the last 10 years, Mary Wilson reconnected with Richard Davis, executive of Gold Forever Music, a publishing company established by Eddie Holland after leaving Motown. In the early days of Motown, Holland-Dozier-Holland was the songwriting team responsible for The Supremes’ string of hit records.

 

While Mary continued to record, she kept a journal with her most personal thoughts, perspective, outlook, philosophy on life, beliefs based on her experiences and topics of the day. Richard Davis discussed this song with Wilson. Mary told Davis and Bond that their lyrics were able to capture and articulate her feelings into song and help her tell her story. As she was watching and writing about her feelings about the political unrest and the division in the country, Mary felt strongly about releasing “Why Can’t We All Get Along,” now in the hopes of spreading a positive message through music.

Solo: Survivors of Chaos via Titan Comics for use by 360 Magazine

Review of Solo: The Survivors of Chaos Vol. 1-2

For an artist who’s biggest claims to fame are Tom & Jerry and Disney comic books, it’s hard to imagine that he’s also credited for something like Titan ComicsSolo: The Survivors of Chaos. While it has an art and writing style you’d likely see with either Tom & Jerry or Mickey Mouse, it’s not. Solo instead is essentially if Disney were to show the underlying evils that exist in their movies. It’s if at the end of Tarzan, we would see Clayton being hanged. Blood is spilt and body parts are shown. 

The Series Overall Thus Far

The graphic novel follows Solo, a competent fighter who’s just trying to survive in a barren post-apocalyptic wasteland. You can tell Martin put a lot of time and effort into worldbuilding, evident from the lore documents provided at the end of the second book. You want to see more of the universe, which will hopefully occur in later volumes. 

The character of Solo is an interesting mix of Guts from Berserk with a touch of Joseph Joestar from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures. He’s stoic but polite, and seems to have a good heart, at least from what we’ve seen so far. The characterization isn’t the draw of the comic, but the characters are engaging enough to be rooted for. 

The most impressive aspect of the series so far is the action. Solo: The Survivors of Chaos has some of the best action I’ve ever seen in comics. You can clearly see the motions of each character and it makes for an engaging read. It makes sense given the writer’s background working with Tom & Jerry

However, for a comic that’s so action-focused, the dialogue is still solid. You can tell it’s not Martin’s main strength as there are scenes that feel as though they should’ve been more dialogue heavy but instead were filled with narration, but the narration nevertheless works in conveying what it needs to convey. There are a few places where the reader has to make a few assumptions but anyone who’s read any comic or watched any movie ever should be able to make the conclusions they need to.

The issues I have with it are minor, but need to be discussed. While these types of characters haven’t appeared in the comic thus far, there are a few species that I already know I won’t like if forced to see them. The “trolls” and the “femme fatales” seem like stereotypical depictions of people with intellectual disabilities and sex workers. While I don’t know what they’re going to be, it’s something I’ll look out for as the series continues.  

What to Expect in Volume 2

The first volume introduced us to the characters and the story whereas volume 2 was more of a deep dive into the characters. It’s not as action packed as the first volume but still contains good action sequences nonetheless. You also get a glimpse into a possible conflict for our protagonists.

Conclusion

The series thus far has shown itself to be intriguing and I’ll be interested to see where Martin takes it. We’re only two issues in but if Martin develops on the themes he’s hinted at, it’ll be an excellent ride. So far the series gets an 8.8/10.

San Francisco Ballet Virtual Benefit

San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet) announces details for its first-ever virtual benefit, Leap Into the New Year, to be held online via Socio on Thursday, January 14, 2021 to mark the opening of SF Ballet’s historic 88th Digital Season.

With a performance curated by Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson, the event includes delivered items, such as a meal, caviar, and gifts provided by McCalls Catering & Events; and wine provided by Rodney Strong Vineyards. The evening’s programming includes the SF Ballet performance debut of two of the Company’s new Principal Dancers, Nikisha Fogo and Julian MacKay, in the Act III pas de deux from Don Quixote, and an excerpt from a new work by Helgi Tomasson created on members of SF Ballet’s corps de ballet—click here to see a video about this work.

Leap Into the New Year also includes a newly produced prelude to Mrs. Robinson by Cathy Marston, featuring Principal Dancers Sarah Van Patten and Joseph Walsh, and excerpts from the Digital Season’s additional world premieres, Wooden Dimes by Danielle Rowe and a new work by Myles Thatcher. Complete programming and casting are included at the bottom of this release.

Proceeds from Leap Into the New Year will benefit a wide range of SF Ballet artistic initiatives, including new works, accessible digital content, scholarships and financial aid programs for San Francisco Ballet School students, and community education programs for youth, families, and seniors. The event begins at 6 pm with access to private virtual tables; a wine education session with the event’s wine sponsor, Rodney Strong Vineyards; and behind-the-scenes content from rehearsals, followed by a 7 pm performance.

Ticket holders at the Artistic Director, Principal, Producer, and Soloist levels will enjoy VIP programming, including the pas de deux from William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, rehearsed by Forsythe on Soloist Sasha Mukhamedov and Principal Dancer Aaron Robison, and the White Swan Pas De Deux from Helgi Tomasson’s Swan Lake performed by Fogo and MacKay.

Under the direction of Music Director Martin West, San Francisco Ballet Orchestra recorded music for the event using approved safety protocols at Skywalker Studios, 25th Street Recording, and the SF Conservatory of Music, which was produced, engineered and mastered by Leslie Ann Jones.

The evening is hosted by SF Ballet Soloist Madison Keesler, who will be styled by Neiman Marcus. All table guests will enjoy a private, virtual meet-and-greet with a Company dancer during the event and will have access to a virtual social wall where they can share photography and messages with other benefit-goers. Artistic Director and Principal level table guests will also have the option to request an on-site, socially-distanced photo-op with Drew Altizer Photography.

Tickets to the event start at $3,000 for a pair of guests or $1,600 for a virtual table of four for ENCORE! members. Guests who wish to receive a meal, wine, and gifts delivered to their home day-of must RSVP by December 31, 2020. ABOUT HELGI TOMASSON

Helgi Tomasson, one of the most venerated classical dancers of his generation, embarks on his 36th season with San Francisco Ballet in 2021. Born in Iceland, he danced with Harkness Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and New York City Ballet, where he distinguished himself as a dancer of technical purity, musicality, and intelligence. Tomasson assumed leadership of SF Ballet in 1985. Under his direction, SF Ballet has become a company widely recognized as one of the finest in the world.

Tomasson has balanced devotion to the classics with an emphasis on new works, cultivating frequent collaborations and commissions with choreographers such as William Forsythe, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, Trey McIntyre, Cathy Marston, and Mark Morris, among many others. He has choreographed more than 50 works for the Company, including full-length productions of Swan LakeThe Sleeping BeautyRomeo & Juliet (taped for Lincoln Center at the Movies’ Great American Dance), Giselle, and Nutcracker (taped for PBS’s Great Performances).

He conceptualized the 1995 UNited We Dance festival, in which SF Ballet hosted 12 international companies; the 2008 New Works Festival, which included 10 world premieres by 10 acclaimed choreographers; and 2018 Unbound: A Festival of New Works.
