Japanese Breakfast

Tuesday, January 18, indie pop act Japanese Breakfast performed “Slide Tackle,” a track from their GRAMMY-nominated album, Jubilee, on The Late Show with James Corden. Michelle Zauner, applauded founder, did a ‘Bar Chat interview where she talked about these recent nominations and more. Watch Japanese Breakfast’s performance on The Late Show with James Corden HERE.

Jubilee released last June as one of the years leading, critically acclaimed albums. The album stole spots on Best Of lists for 2021 from Rolling Stone, People Magazine, Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, NPR, Wall Street Journal, The Ringer, SPIN, Esquire, Vulture, The AV Club, Paste, Cosmopolitan, UPROXX, Consequence of Sound, Slant and Hypebeast. The album gained so much attention that it was even voted the #1 album of the year on NPR’s Listener’s Poll and #1 on UPROXX’s Critics Poll.

If that wasn’t enough success for one year, Zauner, too, published her New York Times Best Seller, Crying in H Mart, which is now being reworked for MGM’s Orion Pictures. The book is a moving memoir that captures Zauner’s experiences growing up Korean American, the struggles she went through with the death of her mother and how she navigated discovering her own identity.

About Michelle Zauner

The Korean American musician and author Michelle Zauner is renowned for her sonic demeanor. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Zauner grew up in Eugene, Oregon for most of her adolescence. Zauner took to music instantly, beginning to learn to play the piano at 5, later moving to the guitar at age 15. Her mother’s passing in 2014 lead to her starting Japanese Breakfast. She tells Teen Vogue, “I moved back to Oregon to care for her, and I kind of put the band on indefinite hiatus. Unfortunately, she passed away, and while I was in Oregon, helping take care of the house and being a support system for my dad, the only way that I could have something for myself was if I made my own record. So I kind of carved out some time to do that.” Japanese Breakfast’s debut came in 2016 with the hit album Psychopomp. Through the album, Zauner revealed the intense period that followed her mother’s death. Zauner’s unique perspective amongst mainstream pop music sets her apart from other artists, and she’s one you’ll want to take a listen to.

Interview with Clubhouse

By: Skyler Johnson

Indie pop outfit Clubhouse (Forrest Taylor, Ari Blumer, Zak Blumer, Forrest Taylor, Michael Berthold) recently released Are We Going Too Slow, featuring the song: “Home Videos.” 360 Magazine interviewed the band about their music, fame, and their midwestern upbringings.

You all have been friends for a very long time? How did you meet? What are some of the most important memories you have together outside of the band?

[Max] I met Zak and Ari when we were in middle school, and we started playing together doing covers mostly. We started writing originals and taking things more seriously when we went to college, where we met Mike and Forrest. Some of our favorite memories together are from this big party we have every year for the holidays. All of our families get together to have the most ridiculous white elephant gift exchange.

What, as a band, are you most proud of having accomplished?

[Forrest] We’re really proud of this new EP. It’s the first true body of work we’ve done and we’re so excited to share it with everyone!

What would you say are the core things that inspire and drive the band?

[Zak] I think the biggest thing is that we’re constantly bouncing ideas off each other in the studio. We all co-write and produce, so being able to explore with everyone’s different styles is what drives the creative inspiration.

What was the inspiration behind the name Clubhouse?

[Ari] When we were younger, there was this separate little office/studio space in my backyard. In high school we hung out there all the time, so when we were thinking of a name, ‘Clubhouse’ just kind of felt right.

What are your favorite memories of being from the Midwest? What do you think the Midwest should be proud of/known for?

[Mike] I’m from Cleveland so some of my favorite Midwest memories are getting together with friends and family in the fall to watch the Browns! My favorite part about the Midwest is that time of year, with the leaves changing color and the temperature getting a little cooler.

What is the best fan interaction you’ve had?

[Max] We had a fan reach out to us a while ago asking me to write out a lyric from The Weeknd in my handwriting and send it to her so she could get it tattooed on her!

What would you like to accomplish as a band? Are there any awards you’d like to win or a venue you’d love to play at?

[Mike] A venue I’ve always wanted to play at is Red Rocks. That would be so incredible!

How has the band adjusted or repositioned while dealing with Max Reichert’s cancer diagnosis? How has it made you closer or strong?

[Zak] Going through something like that together was the hardest thing imaginable. But through all of that I think we really found ourselves. We stopped caring so much about how we were going to define our music and just started creating for fun again. We bonded for life going through that.

What are you the most proud of when you look back at the creation of Are We Going Too Slow?

[Forrest] We were really able to bring in all of the different sounds and styles we love on this project. We didn’t force ourselves into any box, just made the music we love.

Young Franco × Golden Vessel – Underneath

Following a near perfect run of singles under a reformed, hip hop dance sound recruiting the likes of rap mogul Denzel Curry, SonReal and rising star Jalmar, Young Franco returns to his indie roots, collaborating with close friend Golden Vessel for new single, “Underneath”. Listen HERE

Young Franco’s career highlights include Apple Advertising Campaigns, support from Zane Lowe and hosting new MTV series, “Back and Beyond” with Thandi Phoenix, “Underneath” acts as an ode to the incredible, feel good alternative sound that established his core early fanbase.

“Underneath” oozes timelessness, highlighting Young Franco’s ability to shift sounds and genres, while keeping his cornerstone value of quality dance cross over production. Across its just under 4-minute run time, Golden Vessel’s ominous vocals shimmer amidst a cocktail of production flare from Franco. A wobbly bassline combines perfectly with softly tapped piano chords, creating the underbed for a sway worthy alt-pop ballad. As the synth line takes care of the melodic elements in the track’s breakdown, a melancholic ambience is created, channeling the perfect moment for reflection in these unstable times.

On the creation of the track, Golden Vessel stated, “To me it feels like it’s about that corny moment at a music festival or a concert where you’ve spotted someone a couple of times and you lock eyes with them. Your favorite band is playing, and you feel really connected with this stranger even though you know nothing about them.”

About Young Franco

The Young Franco project is currently sitting perched above the clouds, with career highlights being ticked off with every subsequent release. Most recently he collaborated with Filipino-Canadian Director Khrysta Lloren a.k.a NOFAC3 for the music video for Come Thru (feat. SonReal & Jalmar), which premiered via Flaunt. His 2020 single, “Fallin Apart” featuring Denzel Curry and Pell took the already glowing artist to angelic levels. The single received a full addition on Triple J, as well as radio spins globally, and featured on publications such as Clash Magazine, NME, Out Now Magazine, Colors, Sniffers, Happy Mag, Acclaim, Purple Sneakers, Pilerats and more. The track also featured as the soundtrack for Apple’s Airpod ‘Jump’ campaign which has received nearly 10 million views on Youtube and was premiered during the Grammys broadcast.

The Happy Fits – Another Try

Orchestral tinged indie-pop trio, The Happy Fits’ have partnered with SiriusXM’s Advanced Placement for the first look of their new single “Another Try.” Taken from their two-track bundle, which also includes the track “Cold Turkey,” “Another Try” represents the first new music since the release of their 2020 sophomore album, What Could Be Better, press HERE to listen and HERE to watch the “Another Try” visualizer, created by Alexis Kitchmire and Liza Farrell, which features bright and bold pop art images seen through a vintage View-Master.

Reflecting how we often cope with reality in negative ways, the anthemic new single rides an emotionally-charged chorus that highlights the importance of accepting adversity as part of life’s journey and an opportunity to grow. Inspired by cabin fever and the fear of losing everything they’d worked towards, “Another Try” is intentional in its effort to feel like a light of inspiration rather than a dark moment in the band’s timeline.

Despite signaling the start of a new era for The Happy Fits, “Another Try” continues the band’s steadfast mission statement of connecting with a world that’s sometimes distant. “For the past 3 years touring and recording was the only life that we knew, and I found myself repeating the same habits, day in and day out. For a time, I tried to do things that I thought would fill some void in me that needed to feel accomplished, but if anything, it just caused me to slip back into my vices,” Calvin shares. Moving to Brooklyn to record their new music, “Another Try” ignited the spark the band needed to continue creating vivid, lyrically-driven music. “The song, to me, feels like a goodbye to the negativity and hardships that we have all gone through in the past year,” adds Ross.

Their songs, which emphasize life-changing realizations, celebrate our collective ability to overcome the obstacles and hurdles as we level up morally and emotionally. The Happy Fits have cultivated an eager and engaged fanbase who have propelled consumption rates through the roof. The band saw rapid growth following the release of What Could Be Better as their monthly listeners grew to over 780,000 on Spotify and they surpassed 65 million global streams. The trio achieved their first Billboard chartings, landing at #4 on the Alternative New Artists list and #12 on the Top New Artists Albums list, while seeing the album’s focus track “Hold Me Down” hit #30 on the Alternative Airwaves chart. The Grammy Foundation, Alternative Press, DuJour, PopMatters, Ones To Watch, Atwood Magazine and more have all signed on to champion The Happy Fits’ unique, guitar-and-cello rock, with NPR asking “What Could Be Better? I honestly don’t know.”

The band will hit the road in October for a 50+ date headline tour to share their optimistic music with their fans, who have helped them sell out stops in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and DC. Full routing is below. For tickets and more details, visit The Happy Fits website.

In addition to their music, the band regularly connects with fans through their Twitch and YouTube Gaming channel, where they explore the worlds of Minecraft, Among Us, Stardew Valley, and Call of Duty (which they recently played with Ryan Key of Yellowcard). Flora Cash shares new single – Chronically Beautiful

RIAA platinum-certified indie-pop duo Flora Cash has today unveiled a tender and reflective new single. “Chronically Beautiful” is available now via the Swedish/American band’s own Flower Money Records at all DSPs and streaming services.

“’Chronically Beautiful’ was sparked when we were having a conversation about what it means to be beautiful,” says Flora Cash, “especially when looked at through the lens of real love. It’s not an acute, momentary perception; it’s the feeling that the person you love; the person that you waited your whole life for has a beauty that transcends any given moment and isn’t dependent on what they happen to be wearing or how their face looks that day or week or month; they’re chronically beautiful.”

Listen to “Chronically Beautiful”

“Chronically Beautiful” marks the latest new music from Flora Cash following the arrival earlier this year of the poignant new single, “Soul Mate,” available now for streaming and download. Now boasting more than 2.5M worldwide streams thus far, the track is joined by an equally powerful official music video streaming now here.

Flora Cash was born in 2012 when Minneapolis-native Cole Randall uploaded his music to Soundcloud and caught the attention of Sweden-based Shpresa Lleshaj. The pair soon began playing music together, forming a relationship that would eventually blossom into marriage. A series of independent releases were followed by an acclaimed seven-song mini-LP, Can Summer Love Last Forever?, in March 2016. Flora Cash’s full-length debut album, Nothing Lasts Forever (And It’s Fine), arrived the following year, highlighted by the global smash single, “You’re Somebody Else.” First released in 2017, the RIAA platinum-certified single has proven a true viral phenomenon, currently boasting over 250M worldwide streams while ranking as one of Shazam’s Most Shazamed Alternative Songs in both 2019 and 2020. Hailed by Forbes as “arguably the most intriguing song on the radio this past year,” “You’re Somebody Else” was equally popular at multi-format outlets nationwide, reaching #1 at Alternative and Triple-A while also ascending to the top 5 on Billboard’s “Hot Rock Songs” chart. The track – which has also inspired countless TikTok videos in recent months – is joined by an official lyric video, now with over 133M views via YouTube alone.

As creative and engaging onstage as they are in the studio, Flora Cash lit up stages around the world with a wide range of international live dates, including tours alongside Sir Sly, Joywave, lovelytheband, Judah & the Lion, and AJR as well as festival appearances at Life is Beautiful, Bumbershoot, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Hangout Music Fest, Firefly Music Festival, and the KROQ Weenie Roast & Luau, to name but a few. The duo is currently slated to perform at Hamburg, Germany’s MS Dockville 2021, set for Friday, August 13th; additional dates will be announced soon. For updates, please visit here.

In 2020, Flora Cash released their much-anticipated sophomore album, Baby, It’s Okay, highlighted by the hit singles, “Missing Home” and “They Own This Town” and praised by Atwood Magazine for its “stunning display of stripped back, emotive songwriting, minimal introductions and impressive vocal lines are laced over lush, electro-pop instrumentals as delicate as they are organic, all delving into relational themes…a stunning second album.”

“Well-thought-out, congruent, and brilliantly detailed, Flora Cash explores themes such as post-breakup blues and coming to terms with oneself, all coated in melancholic and bittersweet vibes.” – ATWOOD MAGAZINE

“A sound that’s equal parts earthy and ethereal” – SUBSTREAM

“Bitingly bittersweet (Flora Cash’s) crystalline guitar and spine-tingling melodies give voice to that feeling of emptiness that’s recently become all-too-familiar.” – THE LINE OF BEST FIT

“Alongside artists like Billie Eilish, Maggie Rogers, and Francis and the Lights, Flora Cash is on the front lines of modern musicians redefining alt-pop by injecting their music with heartfelt conviction.” – EARMILK

Jenna Kyle × Ojos

LA-based indie-pop artist, Jenna Kyle shares the title track, “Ojos,” from her debut EP today, along with a lyric video. This new bop is the second single from the Ojos EP, will arrive on September 3, 2021. The track represents a new era for the Los Angeles-based singer/ songwriter, producer and live electronic artist, who has actively been leaving her mark as one of the 2% of female music producers in the industry. Jenna Kyle supports women’s rights and LGBTQ equality and stands with The Ally Coalition.

On the new single, Kyle says, “Ojos is the first song I wrote and produced myself. It’s surprising how few women are producing music still, but the doors are definitely open and there’s a strong group of us out here doing it! I vacillate between feeling enraged that there are so few women in the profession, while simultaneously feeling proud to help hold the torch for the next generation of female producers coming up, all while battling the imposter syndrome many of us feel when saying “I am a producer, I produced this myself!”

One of the ways Kyle has explored her newfound producer prowess is to integrate a multicultural world aesthetic that is so uniquely her own. Jenna Kyle’s forthcoming EP is influenced by her travels over the past several years and her long time partnership and collaboration with Brazilian / Argentine drummer Bruno Esrubilsky (Mitski, Hedwig and The Angry Inch, The Band Joseph), which contributed to a globally-minded sound and an influx of Spanish and Portuguese lyrics.

She adds, “Over the past few years, pre-Covid, we toured through Southeast Asia, Europe, and visited South America every few months to be with family. I was immersed in the music and rhythms while meeting so many wonderful people. Language barriers can provide a new opportunity to communicate. You don’t need to understand every word I say to know what I mean. Exploring writing lyrics and poems in Spanish, which I’ve studied through college and since I was a kid, and Portuguese, which is a newer language for me, opened up a more creative process; there’s more room for experimentation within the new rhyme schemes. I don’t get as caught up on a word being cliche. Ojos and all my new music feels like an opening of sound and mind as a direct result of the freedom from self-imposed language constraints, and deepening my skills as a producer.”

The track caught the attention of DJ/producer Sinego, who created a dark, organic house mix of “Ojos,” called La Noche Mix which will be released July 28. This collaboration highlights Kyle’s love of production and connection and takes the track to new places.

The debut single from the EP, “Tell Me,” is also streaming everywhere now along with a new video. “Tell Me” is a capstone of Kyle’s experience of trying on different personas and processes and the video explores the way people present themselves to the world. Kyle co-produced the new single with BAILE(Anjunadeep) and Grant Zubritsky (Verite, Nick Murphy) mostly remotely in their respective Brooklyn studios.

The accompanying music video emerged as an exploration with director Jay Harwood, art director Gina Schiappacasse and choreographer Cesar Brodermann. Kyle strikes somewhat contorted poses in a rotating lineup of wearable art pieces, masks, and headpieces by Brooklyn staple artists including PJ Linden and Max Steiner, nodding to the Tik-Tok and Instagram obsession culture weߣre all trapped in, as she sings ironically “Tell me what to wear, tell me what to think, tell me what to feel inside.”

After a handful of singles, Kyle is carving out her pocket of indie-pop that’s rooted in self-expression with a context that she defines. Her music is a permission slip for others to find their inner voice and go deeply into the heart space that seeks no confirmation or praise, where the goal is to express and not impress. Stay tuned for Ojos, the debut EP, due out this September.
