Japanese Breakfast

Tuesday, January 18, indie pop act Japanese Breakfast performed “Slide Tackle,” a track from their GRAMMY-nominated album, Jubilee, on The Late Show with James Corden. Michelle Zauner, applauded founder, did a ‘Bar Chat interview where she talked about these recent nominations and more. Watch Japanese Breakfast’s performance on The Late Show with James Corden HERE.

Jubilee released last June as one of the years leading, critically acclaimed albums. The album stole spots on Best Of lists for 2021 from Rolling Stone, People Magazine, Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, NPR, Wall Street Journal, The Ringer, SPIN, Esquire, Vulture, The AV Club, Paste, Cosmopolitan, UPROXX, Consequence of Sound, Slant and Hypebeast. The album gained so much attention that it was even voted the #1 album of the year on NPR’s Listener’s Poll and #1 on UPROXX’s Critics Poll.

If that wasn’t enough success for one year, Zauner, too, published her New York Times Best Seller, Crying in H Mart, which is now being reworked for MGM’s Orion Pictures. The book is a moving memoir that captures Zauner’s experiences growing up Korean American, the struggles she went through with the death of her mother and how she navigated discovering her own identity.

About Michelle Zauner

The Korean American musician and author Michelle Zauner is renowned for her sonic demeanor. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Zauner grew up in Eugene, Oregon for most of her adolescence. Zauner took to music instantly, beginning to learn to play the piano at 5, later moving to the guitar at age 15. Her mother’s passing in 2014 lead to her starting Japanese Breakfast. She tells Teen Vogue, “I moved back to Oregon to care for her, and I kind of put the band on indefinite hiatus. Unfortunately, she passed away, and while I was in Oregon, helping take care of the house and being a support system for my dad, the only way that I could have something for myself was if I made my own record. So I kind of carved out some time to do that.” Japanese Breakfast’s debut came in 2016 with the hit album Psychopomp. Through the album, Zauner revealed the intense period that followed her mother’s death. Zauner’s unique perspective amongst mainstream pop music sets her apart from other artists, and she’s one you’ll want to take a listen to.

The Weeknd – Dawn FM

The Weeknd’s surprise album Dawn FM is leading the charts around the globe. Debuting at #1 Apple Music US and in 125 countries, and #1 Spotify US and worldwide. Dawn FM accumulates over 500 million streams to date. Listen to Dawn FM [XO/Republic Records] HERE.

Despite the release of the album coming suddenly, Dawn FM has been a smash hit. Dawn FM may just snatch up the spot as The Weeknd’s best album thus far. The single “Sacrifice” came out at #1 on Spotify US and global, while the collection The Highlights, too, ranks among the Billboard Top 10 at #6. Having two albums rank in the top ten is conventionally unheard of, a resounding accomplishment for The Weeknd.

Playing off the theme of an afterlife-esque radio station network, Dawn FM transforms viewers to a new universe. The abrupt announcement of the album ultimately worked in the favor of The Weeknd, with Dawn FM now ranking as his second global #1 album during the pandemic, following the renowned After Hours was released in March 2020, featuring the #1 All Time Hot 100 hit “Blinding Lights.”

Dawn FM has gained quick critical acclaim, registering The Weeknd’s leading aggregate score on Metacritic at ’88.’ Variety spoke on the album, stating, “After Hours has resonated for nearly two years after its release, and in the face of another phase of a daunting pandemic, it seems that Dawn FM – possibly The Weeknd’s best and most fully realized album to date – will help carry fans through this one as well.” Rolling Stone, too, raved about Dawn FM, rating it “4-out-of-5 stars, The Weeknd focuses those interstellar ambitions to anoint us with the most enchanting music to the portal through purgatory.”

Dawn FM sees features from Tyler, the Creator, Lil Wayne, Quincy Jones, Oneohtrix Point Never and Jim Carrey.

If you haven’t listened to this album yet, you are truly missing out on a sonic, one-of-a-experience by the superstar himself, The Weeknd.

Coronavirus * Carhops

A lot has been made of the fact that COVID-19 has accelerated a new normal void of handshakes, crowded spaces, and traditional workplaces, but has the virus actually sent us back in time rather than forcing the future?

If trends in fast food are any indication, COVID might be more of a blast from the past than a harbinger of things to come. Since mid-March (when the spread of COVID became front-page news) Sonic–known for its 1950’s-esque drive-in style carhop service–has cemented its place as the preferred fast food destination for diners who have ventured outside their homes.

Regional favorites such as Culver’s (WI) and Popeyes (LA) still have a loyal following in their respective home states and Taco Bell remains a popular choice, but it is clear that Sonic’s unique service model has likely played a role in pandemic-weary travelers looking for a bite to eat.

Evan Konrad Shares Debut Single

Singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Evan Konrad uncovers his debut single “The Long Way Out” today.

Get it HERE via LAVA/Republic Records.

An unpredictable anthem teetering between manic energy and cathartic falsetto, the track invites listeners into the artist’s handcrafted sonic world. Produced and performed by Konrad, “The Long Way Out” hinges on an airy beat, haunting vocals, and a seesawing chant—“We take the long way out.”

On the track Konrad noted: “The Long Way Out is a journey through the act of letting go, and how romanticized it can be throughout the grieving process. Unable to accept the changes within ourselves, or the changes in another person, as we reach for a connection that no longer exists. I wrote this song to acknowledge and work through this within myself. I want this song to be a beacon of light for anyone who is looking for the same liberation I sought after.”

This is just the beginning for Konrad. He’s set to unveil more music throughout 2019 in addition to launching his first proper tour.

Born and raised in Abbotsford, BC Canada, Konrad devoted his entire life to crafting music. Growing up in a house where creativity would be encouraged at every turn, he spent countless hours writing songs and producing. Following stints in the studio and on the road with other artists, he locked himself away in the studio and commenced work on what would become his forthcoming debut. With nothing more than a few songs on his private SoundCloud link, he caught the attention of LAVA founder Jason Flom who signed him on the spot upon listening to his music, because of the downright mind-blowing songcraft. The best way to describe the music would be Thom Yorke translating Christopher Nolan’s Memento into songs, and even that only scratches the surface.

NIGHTMARCHERS

OPEN WORLD HAWAIIAN RPG NIGHTMARCHERS COMES TO FIG

Its like Moana meets Mad Max in a sprawling 3rd person shoot

Wyrmbyte today announces that its post-apocalyptic Hawaiian RPG is coming to Fig. A open world hybrid RPG shooter that plays a bit like Far Cry meets Zelda, Nightmarchers is set on the island of Oahu after a cataclysmic event leaves the archipelago cut off from the rest of the world. You play as Kai, a man blessed (or cursed) by the forgotten gods of Hawaii to take back the island from the ravenous Kamapua’a.

Nightmarchers kicks off today on Fig (www.fig.co) offering both equity and rewards opportunities, with an overall goal of $100K. Backers can support by investing in Fig Game Shares that pay a return based on the game’s future sales. Stretch goals add additional features, quest lines, powers, and more.

Nightmarchers has been a passion project of ours for years now, said Wyrmbyte CEO Scott Brown. Hawaii means a lot to all of us at Wyrmbyte, both as a place we love to visit and as a culture. Weߣre thrilled to explore the mythology of Hawaii and reimaging it as part of our world in this sprawling shooter RPG.

As Kai, you’ll wield real world weapons and the powers of gods like Maui and Pele to make Oahu a safe place for its people once more. Take to the skies as an owl and scout ahead or identify new mission opportunities. Take to the sea as a Shark and find hidden items on the ocean floor. Craft and customize dozens of weapons, or use your Uhane powers to strike silently from the bushes with your bow. There are dozens of outposts to reclaim, hundreds of missions to undertake, and six rival factions to work with to retake Oahu from Kamapua’a. His corrupted Nightmarchers and possessed islanders and wildlife will be gunning for you, so you’d better make good use of the factions knowledge and expertise if you hope to survive.
