Introducing the ‘BLACK CROWS’ 2018-2019 Season

ABOUT BLACK CROWS

A brand of ski forged in an uncompromised spirit and aesthetic.

a non-conformist spirit

Black Crows is above all a story of friendship, that of evolving freeride skiers in Chamonix, Camille Jaccoux, and Bruno Compagnet. Two personalities from the freeskiing universe, both passionate about mountains and adventure. This passion was translated by their willingness to find skis adapted to their practice in

the Mont-Blanc massif.

Black Crows was born from this intention. It started, firstly, with a ski, the Corvus, created in 2006 and which went on sale in 2007. A ski with a length of 196cm and 105 at the waist, capable of accelerating without limits in the massif›s great powder fields, but also which had the capacity to handle delicate passages encountered in the high mountains. This non-conformist ski was the catalyst for the morphologic evolution of freeride skis.

Today, this willingness to explore and discover translates itself into a range which embraces all the free ski domains, from ski-touring to freeride, passing by the piste and a special feminine range. Parallel to this development, black crows offer numerous accessories, poles, skins, ski-bags, and back-packs. For two years, the brand has also ventured into the production of highly technical textiles with two complete collections aimed at ski-touring and freeride. It is therefore now possible to be equipped from head to foot by black crows, except for footwear, pants, and bras, but who knows what the future will hold for us.

avant-garde aesthetic

Inspired by modern art, passing via urban culture, the black crows identity is expressed with a modern and exclusive design. Firstly the logo, created by

Yorgo Tloupas of Yorgo&Co is an association of chevrons which remind us of our childhood drawings and symbolizes the squadron of crows. Simple and geometric, it can be modified into infinity, creating a perspective close to illusion, within the line of optical art. Like this, black crows skis are recognizable to everybody. The involvement of Yorgo&Co’s Paris design office and more particularly of its founder, Yorgo Tloupas, in the artistic direction of the brand, manifested the link between urban and skiing universes. This relationship is equally one of the foundations of the company, of having the willingness to surpass classic boundaries between the mountains and the town with a new approach to the mountains. With the clothing collections, the participation of young well known international designers is witness of this desire to associate technicality with open and unusual aestheticism.

an impeccable quality

Black crows have always associated themselves with the largest manufacturers to design products which are robust and technically irreproachable. Whether it be skis manufactured with the Elan and Atomic factories, or textiles made in partnership with GORE-TEX and Polartec, the detail of quality is the pillar of the brand.

the art of the descent

Conceived originally exclusively for downhill, the arrival of a freebird range aimed at ski-touring and therefore for the ascent has not meant a departure from the multiple requirements of daily use. All our products must be efficient on the descent, whatever the terrain and

the conditions which they confront.

The Osthoff Resort Presents ‘The Big Cheese’

The Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, Wis., has added a new fest for foodies to its line-up of annual events, this one themed to all things cheese. The inaugural “The Big Cheese” event is set for Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, with activities taking place in the resort’s restaurants, cooking school, and specially created tasting rooms. It was the sheer number of award-winning cheesemakers in the Elkhart Lake area, including those with world championships to their names, that provided inspiration for the event, with attendees to be treated to cheese tasting classes taught by the judges and graders of those prestigious cheese competitions. For the full itinerary and ticket and reservation information, log on to www.TheBigCheeseOsthoff.com. To purchase tickets to any of the activities or make overnight reservations, call Osthoff reservations at 877-624-8995.

Participating cheesemakers, all within a half-hour’s drive of Elkhart Lake, represent the crème de la crème and include Sargento, Sartori, LaClare Farms, Saxon Creamery, Henning’s and Deer Creek, plus Masters Gallery which has one of the largest privately held cheese inventories in the country. Naturally, cheese and wine pairings are on the schedule, but more unexpected pairings of cheese and microbrews, cheese and bourbon and cheese and tea are also included on the event lineup. Hands-on cheesemaking classes, cooking classes, cheese tastings through the taste buds of those who grade and judge cheese, a cheese marketplace, a special tasting of world championship cheeses, nine-course artisan cheese dinners prepared by the resort’s culinary director Chef Patrick O’Toole, cheese and cocktail cruises on the lake, even a cleansing milk spa treatment in the resort’s Aspira Spa are all on the schedule as well.

Meals in the resort’s restaurants will feature specially prepared cheese dishes, with the headlining cheesemakers themselves making the rounds through the dining rooms. Wisconsin author Jeannette Hurt, known for her exploration of culture through the lens of food and drink and with several books on cheese already on her resume, will also be on hand to teach cheese and cocktail pairings as well as sign copies of her book “The Cheeses of Wisconsin: A Culinary Travel Guide” and her “Drink Like a Woman” recipe book.

According to Lola Roeh, general manager of The Osthoff Resort, The Big Cheese event was specially created for those who crave authentic foodie experiences. “This event lets attendees experience firsthand the delicious art of artisan cheesemaking in Wisconsin, an art that cheese lovers the world over so closely associate with our corner of the world here in the Elkhart Lake area,” said Roeh.

Overnight guests of the resort as well as the general public are invited to pick and choose which classes and tastings they’d like to attend over the course of this cheese-centric weekend, with full event packages that include overnight accommodations also offered. Festivities begin Friday at 10 a.m. and run through brunch on Monday morning. Tickets may be purchased by calling Osthoff reservations at 877-624-8995.

SOUTHERN HALO

Southern Halo is comprised of three young ladies who hail from Cleveland, Mississippi. Endorsed by Gibson Guitars, the multitalented Morris sisters can all sing, play instruments and write most of their songs. Their latest country album, JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIES, showcases their passion for life and all things in between. Natalia (guitar), Christina (drums) and Hannah (bass) have been influenced by artists like Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake. With powerful harmonies, top-notch production and instrumentation, this trio is nearly unstoppable. Many of their songs contain strong lyrical content which is extremely current in today’s march for gender equality. One of our favorite tracks is “I Think Too Much.” It’s an ode to second guessing your initial instincts in any given situation. Another anthemic track is “Anything Is Possible,” a motivational piece of art that’s about breaking glass ceilings in order to progress to the next level.

In short, Southern Halo is an intellectually sophisticated group of youthful women who know what they want and are determined to get it.

Sept 2018 Berlin Marathon

The sports world has created a new breed of migratory bird. These are flocks of male and female marathon runners who descend annually on six international marathons (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City). While it may be just the elites chasing the cash prizes, everyone else is after the Six Star Finisher Medal given to those amateurs who challenge and accomplish all six of the majors.

This series is the ultimate challenge for those who want to experience an amazing achievement in fascinating cities. But one city stands out from the crowd. More marathon records have been established in Berlin than any of the other majors.

In past years nearly 75,000 runners in one year alone requested to enter the BMW Berlin Marathon in a field limited to 40,000, advised Sports Tours International http://www.sportstoursinternational.co.uk/.

To assure that every marathoner fulfills the dream of joining the Berlin field, Sports Tours International guarantees entry to marathons requiring individual entries. The company also arranges a variety of inclusive accommodations packages for competitors and for non-running visitors who want to track the drama of such stars as Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge who won the BMW Berlin Marathon in 2017.

This marathon, famous for being flat and fast, started in the Grunewald forest in 1974 and moved to West Berlin in 1981. Over recent years the BMW Berlin Marathon has provided nine world records, including Dennis Kimetto’s marathon world record of 2:02:57 in Berlin in 2014. The female course record 2:19:12 was set here in ’05.

The September 16, 2018 BMW Berlin Marathon starts and finishes on Strasse des 17, running past the magnificent Angel of Peace statue and through the Tiergarten district before continuing past the Reichstag at 7Km and the Berliner Dom at 9Km. The field begins to spread out and the race begins to move along quickly where runners can start picking up speed and pace at 12Km while passing the lovely fountain at Strausberger Platz.

The crowds continue to pick up as does the noise, and it’s all supplemented with more than 60 bands lining the route. The course is one big sightseeing loop through one of the most exciting cities in the world. Guaranteed entries are available with travel packages through Sports Tours International. BUICK REGAL SPORTBACK

By Benjamin Reese × Vaughn Lowery

As if the name didn’t suggest it enough, the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback appears to have spent some time training for combat. At first glance, the Regal Essence can appear aggressive due to it’s sharp and narrow LED headlamps with their automatic self leveling system and cornering ability have a bit of “Demon” presence while the rear half of the chassis, with it’s raked roof is calm and collected. Overall the body porpotions have a “utopian” greenhouse effect. Buick claims there are “zero” edges on this car and you’d be hardpressed to find any.

If the looks aren’t enough to please, the cabin works well as a mobile office double with plenty of convienent driver ammenities such as the optional “sights and sounds” package. A premium HD audio system adds extra “oomph” by replacing the spare tire under the trunk with a subwoofer- not to worry as the roadside emergency tool kit with a tire inflator is supplemented. The passengers are never left out of the action with the Regals 4G LTE hotspot connection, including Blutooth streaming for Apple car play.

The 2018 Regal Sportback’s personality and charm really shine when it’s 2.0 liter turbocharged engine paired with a quick shifting 9-speed automatic gearbox work together like a complex watch. It’s fair to say that the Regal entices you to put the pedal to the floor while it begs you for more. Perhaps this is a result of the new Buick being assembled in Europe by Opel, a company that has had its fair share of cars built for the street that end up on the track.

Our Essence model, with the 18-inch machined wheels and optional fog lamps came out the door with a $35,800 price tag- not bad considering all of the performance and infotainment features, but it’s European build quality suggest a car that would retail for quite a bit more.

The Rise of Logistics in 2018

In recent years, the logistics industry has seen significant growth. Advancements in technology have pushed the sector forward, making it one of the most in-demand industries in the world.

All logistics sectors are experiencing continued growth, with new trends constantly being introduced to keep consumers and businesses happy. Here, we’ll look at the rise of logistics in 2018 and the key trends to be aware of.

e-Commerce has revolutionised logistics industry

There’s no denying the main contributor to the rise in logistics in 2018 is e-commerce. The rise in e-retailers has led to a boom in digital shopping. This has in turn, increased demand for logistics, with companies striving to keep up with demand.

It isn’t just the actual need for logistics which has seen a dramatic increase in demand. There’s also been pressure placed upon logistics providers to offer a faster, more reliable and high-tech service. Online business is booming, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Variable shipping options

One of the key logistics trends for 2018, is variable shipping options. While it’s true consumers now expect faster delivery, what they also want is variable shipping options.

It’s all well and good offering free next or same day delivery. However, not all of your customers are going to want their items the same or next day. Therefore, to keep everyone happy, you need to ensure you’re providing numerous options, allowing the customer to choose the most convenient option for them.

It’s a good idea to start looking for courier companies which give you numerous options. Sites such as Parcel2Go.com, can help you narrow down your search.

Shipper 3PL relationships play a key role in future of logistics

Although the rise in logistics in 2018 is most certainly positive, it does pose some challenges for providers. 3PL’s are fast growing in demand, meaning logistics professionals now need to work on improving their 3PL relationships.

Shippers and logistics companies need to start seeing each other more as partners, in order to improve the customer experience. Logistics companies will also likely start to offer more unique services to stay ahead.

Overall, the logistics industry remains one of the fastest growing industries in the globe. With each passing year, it’s only set to become even more integral to our daily lives. However, with a dramatic rise in demand, comes a lot of potential challenges both logistics providers and businesses need to prepare for.

THAI DISHES

By: Vaughn Lowery

About 24 years ago, Tom Wynter moved from Thailand to America with a dream to open his own commercial enterprise. He started working at Thai Dishes restaurant, the old location. And moved on to a California Pizza Kitchen location for almost a decade and became a licensed bartender where he functioned at a popular bar in Hollywood. After becoming managerial staff at various establishments, he begins to act in tandem with Thai Dishes in Santa Monica when it was located on 2nd Street. The owners decided to call it quits as the rental for their location was coming up for renewal. Wynter decided to extend the legacy of this authentic Thailand franchise and discovered a vacancy at 123 Broadway in Santa Monica which fulfilled his imagination – a restaurant with a bar and patio which mimicked the likes of cafes in Paris. This time around he wanted to make sure that his restaurant had all of the key ingredients which he really felt engaged him as a patron – great food and drinks with a decor to match.

Soon After, Thai Dishes on Broadway was born. An unassuming and unpretentious venue which would be perfect for a quick drink/bite or a spot where you celebrate your birthday. Wynter obviously struck gold being a half block away from Ocean Boulevard, the newly renovated mall and the last stop on the Expo Line. For this area, everything is moderately priced and holds all the right offerings for a romantic date or simply a place to recharge your batteries while you people watch in the sidewalk seating. The ambiance is stellar: mosaic tiling near bar, warm fall colors, bespoke wall paper, faux ostrich wrapped table tops and unique Thai ornaments sprinkled throughout. The most sought after menu items include: BBQ pork over rice, spicy green bean tofu, roasted duck over rice and red curry chicken (presentation is very reminiscent of an authentic Thai dining experience).

Specialty handcrafted cocktails like their Mai Thai cocktails made with Thai whiskey will keep you coming back, but customer service contributed by his general manager, Leila Regalado, is a key component to TDOB’s success. She will have you seated within seconds and constantly will check in to see if you require anything else. If her smile isn’t enticing enough, serving size, happy hour specials and bottomless mimosas on Saturday/Sunday from 12 to 3 pm) should reel you back in.

Wynter asserts, “I’m constantly checking on the quality of food that comes out our kitchen and my staff sometimes needs me during holidays and weekends, which leaves little or no time for a life outside of this place.”

THAAI DISHES SQUARE

One thing’s for sure, Tom Wynter and all of his personal sacrifices have made Thai Dishes On Broadway a slam dunk within the Santa Monica Pier/Downtown area.
