Tourism is BIG business and an INVESTMENT in our Region’s Future!

The Leeu Collection invest in Alajmo S.P.A

Luxury hotel group Leeu Collection (www.leeucollection.com) has taken a 10% stake in Alajmo S.P.A (www.alajmo.it), the Italian family business established by brothers Massimiliano (Max) Alajmo, the world’s youngest three-star Michelin chef, and Raffaele (Raf), the company’s Chief Executive and maître des lieux.

The purchase mirrors previous investments made by Analjit (BAS) Singh, the owner of Leeu Collection, all of which have a family focus; companies such as South African Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines and Indian chef Ritu Dalmia’s Riga Foods and Mamagoto.

Alajmo S.p.A. operates four fine-dining restaurants and six café-bistros, including Le Calandre and La Montecchia restaurants in Padua, Caffè Stern in Paris and Grancaffè & Ristorante Quadri in St. Mark’s Square, Venice, as well as a line of food products and a special events business, all overseen by Max from Le Calandre, his vibrant culinary laboratory, which has held three Michelin stars since 2003.

Leeu Collection currently has three properties (Leeu Estates, Leeu House and Le Quartier Français) in Franschhoek, South Africa, with Linthwaite House in the Lake District due to re-open following a year-long refurbishment in June 2018. Two further hotels are under construction in London and Florence.

Said Raf Alajmo, CEO of Alajmo S.p.A., “Having, last year, bought back the shares once owned by Italian investment firm Palladio Finanziaria, my brother and I decided to open our doors to a foreign shareholder. A chance meeting with BAS in Milan has led to him purchasing a share of Alajmo S.p.A., in what we sincerely hope will be the first step towards a strong alliance between our two companies.”

In response, Analjit Singh said, “I am always attracted to invest in family businesses that share a similar vision to mine and, because there are a lot of synergies between Leeu and Alajmo, I feel sure that the results of this partnership will be seen for years to come.”

NY’s Bravest get their very own Pop-Up!

New York’s Bravest Honored in a Pop-Up Exhibition at the New York City Fire Museum, by Acclaimed UK Artist, Alexander Millar

New York’s firefighters are renowned across the world for their valor, dedication and sacrifice. Now, they have inspired the acclaimed UK artist Alexander Millar to create a new body of work that honors the city’s ‘Bravest’ and celebrates the qualities that make them some of the most extraordinary working people on the planet.

Taking inspiration from archive material from the New York City Fire Museum, and the Vulcan Society (a fraternal organization of Black Firefighters), including photographs of the 18th, 19th and 20th century firefighter, Millar has created a collection of portraits and cityscapes that show respect, humor and warmth for the everyday heroes of the city, communicating a strong sense of the people behind the uniforms.

Millar launched his new collection, Everyday Heroes • NYC, at the New York City Fire Museum on April 3rd. special guests were able to view original artwork in oil and pencil, all of which have been created especially for the museum in Millar’s trademark contemporary impressionist style.

After a short run at the museum, the show will transfer to the Millar Fine Art Pop-Up Gallery, on 138 Wooster Street, in Soho, New York on April 7th, 2018 for an expanded exhibition which will bring together critically-acclaimed work from recent years, alongside his new collection inspired by New York and its working people, from the fire department and beyond.

20% of the profits from sales of one of his new artworks, ‘Everyday Heroes’ will be donated, to the city’s Fire Museum and the Vulcan Society.

About the Artist:

Alexander Millar is critically acclaimed for his depictions of industrial cities; his work is strongly influenced by the working men and women of the late 19th and 20th century. His subject matter combined with his impressionistic, impasto style has seen him described as JMW Turner meets LS Lowry.

Emotive and dramatic skies and industryscapes are created with a broad colour palette, loose, impasto brush strokes and an almost energetic and frenzied composition. With his impressionistic skies and landscapes, Millar brings to life eras and scenes that were arguably a struggle and a trial; yet his obvious fondness for the time and the people he paints gives a nostalgic and warm impression of days gone by.

Born and raised in the small mining community of Springside, just outside the town of Kilmarnock on the west coast of Scotland, Alexander Millar was surrounded by laborers, working men, and women, earning their trade in the mills, shipping industries, steelworks or railways.

The importance of these people to their communities and industries stuck with him, and they have become the central figures in his paintings ever since. Alexander Millar’s artwork focuses on the individuals and, latterly, the industryscapes in which they existed.

Nowadays, Alexander Millar is a self-taught artist known around the world, he has received great critical acclaim from some of the world’s most respected art critics. His work continues to be inspired by the working men and women of our communities and cities, and over the coming months and years will feature interpretations of 21st-century workers, in Alexander Millar’s unique style.

Alexander Millar’s original paintings regularly sell for upwards of $20,000.

New Music from Julia Micheals and Trippie Redd

GRAMMY® Award-nominated and multi-platinum selling artist JULIA MICHAELS returns with a brand new single entitled “Jump” [feat. Trippie Redd] today. Get it HERE (Post & Share) via Republic Records.

The song heralds the arrival of her anxiously awaited full-length debut—coming soon.

The single reteams JULIA with frequent producer Nick Monson and longtime co-writer Justin Tranter. On the track, ethereal production ignites a groundswell of energy as the singer’s breathy verses culminate on a huge hypnotic hook just before Ohio rap maverick Trippie Redd drops an emotive and engaging verse of his own.

Since emerging in 2015, JULIA has transformed pop not only from behind-the-scenes as a songwriter whose credits span everyone from Justin Bieber to Selena Gomez, but in the spotlight as a solo artist. Her rapid rise can be attributed to identifiable honesty in every lyric. Within just a year since arrival, she garnered 2018 GRAMMY® nominations in the categories of “Best New Artist” and “Song of the Year” for “Issues. That honesty is also why “Issues” received a triple-platinum certification from the RIAA, cracked 1 billion global streams and consumption of 10 million, became “the top-selling debut single by any artist in 2017, and placed on Variety’s “30 Most Consumed Songs of 2017” as the only solo female contribution. It’s why the industry recognized her with nominations everywhere from American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards and RDMA’s to the MTV VMAS and MTV EMAS.

Extending and expanding her influence, she traffics at the forefront of numerous genres. She lent her voice to Clean Bandit’s international hit “I Miss You,which became her first Top 10 entry on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Dance Songs chart. Right now, she also features on Keith Urban’s latest single “Coming Home” and rising artist Noah Kahan’s single “Hurt Somebody.”  Other collaborations include a duet and writing credits on Shawn Mendes’ upcoming album, songs on Christina Aguilera’s upcoming album, a co-writing credit for Janelle Monàe’s latest “Make Me Feel, and a sample of her vocals on Migos“Gang Gang. Moreover, she’s written on recent albums from P!nk, Maroon 5, and Jesse Ware.

Next up on May 18, she performs “Jump” on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! and on the Today Show Summer Concert SeriesJuly 27.

Julia continues to shine on stage as well. Following sold out shows alongside Shawn Mendes and Niall Horan  overseas, she embarks on her first official U.S. tour, joining Maroon 5 for the Red Pill Blues Tour beginning this June (see dates below).

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

Three years after the beginning of a gruelling testing programme that has seen it conquer every corner of the globe from freezing snowfields to searing deserts, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan will undertake The Final Challenge to prove itself Effortless Everywhere in the public eye. In an unprecedented partnership, Rolls-Royce and National Geographic will work together to publish daily film and photograph updates as Cullinan undertakes trials in Northern Europe, the Middle East and the United States for a final time ahead of its world debut later this year.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan will embody all the values and capabilities that drove Rolls-Royce’s two founding fathers, the Honourable Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce, to secure the marque’s reputation early last century, as they took top honours in rigorous public adventures such as the Scottish Reliability Trials, the London to Edinburgh event and the Alpine Trials.

The Final Challenge will begin in the Highlands of Scotland on Wednesday 4 April and will be broadcast on social media by National Geographic and Rolls-Royce as it continues its adventure through the Alpine snowfields of Austria, the arid deserts of the Middle East and finally across the toughest terrain in the United States. These will include multiple off-road challenges and miles of rough terrain.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan and crew will be accompanied on The Final Challenge by acclaimed explorer and photographer Cory Richards, National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year in 2012. The National Geographic team will document the journey with daily updates broadcast from the spectacular, far-flung locations he and the crew encounter.

“I promised the public three years ago that I would involve them in the development and testing of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and I continue to keep that promise by making The Final Challenge, a public trial”, comments Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce.

“Today’s public and customers will see Rolls-Royce in a wholly new light as Cullinan demonstrates just how capable a Rolls-Royce can be. And in a few short months, our customers will be able to experience this capability for themselves as they get behind the wheel of this truly compelling Rolls-Royce that is Effortless, Everywhere.”

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

Today, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars revealed the most anticipated car of 2018 and quite possibly, the most anticipated Rolls-Royce of all time. Named after the largest diamond ever discovered which now resides in the British Crown Jewels, Cullinan is an all-terrain, high-bodied car that makes the idea of authentic, luxury off-road travel a reality for the first time. Luxury travel is now Effortless, Everywhere.

The super-luxury lifestyle is evolving and Rolls-Royce is in the lead. Luxury is no longer an urban concept. More and more it is about embracing and experiencing the wider world. Our customers expect to go everywhere in luxury, effortlessly and without compromise, conquering the most challenging terrain to enjoy life’s most enriching experiences, wherever they may be. For this reason, they have asked us to create a Rolls-Royce that offers uncompromised luxury wherever they dare to venture. Cullinan is that car. It is Effortless, Everywhere” – Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

The second new Rolls-Royce to sit on the all-new aluminium ‘Architecture of Luxury’, Cullinan is the most technologically advanced, and only purpose-built, luxury SUV in the world. Tested to destruction all over the planet, Cullinan is an incredibly capable off-roader that sees the development of the ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ for off-road enjoyment, without sacrificing any Rolls-Royce on-road behaviour.

Authentic Rolls-Royce engineering – everywhere

Key to the creation of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV was the Architecture of Luxury – Rolls-Royce’s proprietary all-aluminium architecture. The Architecture of Luxury really comes into its own in creating Cullinan. The engineering team behind Cullinan adapted the Architecture of Luxury to the design template of a high-bodied car laid down by Giles Taylor and his design team thanks to its innate adaptability. It was designed and engineered from the ground up in such a way as to be scalable to the size and weight requirements of different future Rolls-Royce models, including those with different propulsion, traction and control systems, thus underpinning the long-term future product roadmap.

“The drivetrain system we engineered for Cullinan had one key job to do,” explains Caroline Krismer, Engineering Project Leader for Cullinan. “To bring the famed Rolls-Royce ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ to all other terrains possible, while ensuring class-leading on-road behaviour in the SUV sector.” The integration of new technologies into the architecture was key to ensuring the fundamental quality of Cullinan as Effortless, Everywhere.

The 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce enginedelivers 563bhp/420kW and 850Nm/627lb-ft of torque to the all-new Rolls-Royce All-Wheel Drive. A four-wheel steering system provides never-before-seen handling. The entire package makes Cullinan capable of overcoming any challenge while still delivering the world-renowned “Rolls-Royce Magic Carpet Ride.’

Designing a force of nature

“At this point in the history of automotive design, SUVs have become homogenous and ubiquitous,” comments Giles Taylor, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “The label SUV is now applied to anything with a two-box silhouette and the least suggestion of going off tarmac. We envisioned an authentic, three-box all-terrain high-bodied car with a convention-challenging design and absolute capability that would satisfy the adventurous urges of our clients.”

Contemporary and functional design ensures Cullinan gains iconic status in the face of increasingly bland SUV designs. The first “three-box” offer in the SUV-sector, Cullinan offers individual seating configuration where customers have the option of a unique glass partition wall that creates a distinct environment for passengers, separated from the luggage compartment. The most practical of Rolls-Royces, Cullinan is the most versatile, family oriented, fun-to-drive super-luxury SUV available today. Cullinan offers a suite of Bespoke features developed specifically for the many various lifestyles of its owners including the Viewing Suite and multiple options for a ‘Bespoke Recreation Module.’

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce as never before seen. When Sir Henry Royce said, “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it”, he could have had Cullinan in mind.

MANDELA IN YOU

South African Tourism and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have partnered in a unique initiative that will allow for all South African’s and visitors from outside the country to experience some of Nelson Mandela’s favorite travel spots and the places he enjoyed visiting.

As part of the Nelson Mandela Centenary celebrations, South African Tourism has identified 100 experiences, attractions and destinations around South Africa that have strong historical and social ties to his life.

This tourism-focused initiative, will be launched at this year’s Africa’s Travel Indaba, Africa’s largest travel trade show which will take place from 8 to 10 May.

Often respectfully referred to by his Xhosa clan name Madiba, Nelson Mandela was a global icon who was adored all around the world as intensely as he was at home, spent much time travelling to, and living in various parts of our beautiful country, creating memories and inspiring hope for those around him.

As a result, the chosen 100 experiences, attractions and destinations depicts the story of his journey, which has become familiar to the global community.

This showcase of South Africa and Nelson Mandela’s memory can be found on the Madiba’s Journey App, which allows users to view the attractions on a map, build their itineraries and share their own journeys on social media. Visitors can also experience the emotion and relevance of each location through audio, text and image galleries. The app also offers real-time weather information, distances and details of nearby attractions.

“The significance of launching this initiative at Africa’s Travel Indaba is to commemorate the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world”, says SA Tourism COO Sthembiso Dlamini.

“His commitment to and vision for South Africa is aptly tied to our journey as one of the key players in South Africa’s economic discourse: bringing socio-economic value to communities, and continuously forging partnerships with various organisations that provide SMMEs in the tourism sector with intensive training, mentoring and upskilling.”

To this end, Tourism Month celebrations in September will take place in the Eastern Cape, Nelson Mandela’s province of birth. In a bid to encourage travellers to explore some of the attractions dearest to Madiba’s memory, Nelson Mandela Centenary content and deals packages will be made available on South African Tourism’s owned platforms.

Delegates who will be at the trade show, which is aptly themed “Africa’s Stories, Your Success”, can expect to be immersed in a number of experiences that pay homage to Madiba’s layered and nuanced life. They’ll journey through some of the most notable places associated with his life such as the Eastern Cape where he was born, Vilakazi Street where he lived as a young lawyer, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site where he was found and detained, and finally, Robben Island where he spent almost two decades as a political prisoner.

Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation described this initiative as one that will “take Madiba’s legacy to another level both in South Africa and globally in terms of recognising his values of transformation and unity”, adding that it is “important to build a value based society because that was in line with Madiba’s vision for our continent”.

“I also want to thank SA Tourism for their role in ensuring that we portray the legacy of Nelson Mandela during this special centenary year,” concluded Hatang.

Additionally, please find thesetwo links to recent media statements released by the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) announcing former US President Barack Obama will visit Johannesburg in July to deliver the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture to honor the Mandela centenary.
