Lil Nas X × Vevo

Grammy Award-winning artist Lil Nas X and director Christian Bresauer have partnered exclusively with Vevo for the latest installment of Vevo Footnotes, revealing every hidden reference and new information about the making of their iconic Industry Baby music video.

WATCH THE MAKING OF INDUSTRY BABY | VEVO FOOTNOTES

In the visual for the now Platinum-certified hit song, Lil Nas X discusses the inspiration and controversy surrounding the making of the video. He also talks about personal items he used on the set, improvised choreography and the most uncomfortable scenes to film with co-star Jack Harlow. The song appears on Lil Nas X’s chart-topping album MONTERO out now.

Below is a complete outline of The Making of Industry Baby | Vevo Footnotes, including key insight from the music video’s executive director and more from Lil Nas X himself.

FOOTNOTES OUTLINE:

0:10 Narration: The Grammy’s in Nas’s jail cell are his actual Grammys.

0:18 Narration: The poster in his cell is an image from the BET Awards show he performed at three days prior to shooting the music video.

0:35 – 0:41 Lil Nas X: I wanted to go to a place people would least expect me to go in a music video. An overly masculine place and make it gay asf. I also wanted to visualize the theme of breaking free from the shackles society places on you.

0:54 – 0:59 Christian Breslauer: This Visual is essentially a giant metaphor to represent Nas’s unwillingness to conform to the industry standards or be caged in because of his beliefs. No matter the scenario he will be who he is and no prison is strong enough to contain him.

1:08 Narration: Nas improvised this choreography on the spot.

1:27 Lil Nas X: I think Shawshank Redemption is a great movie, but it was in no way the main inspiration of the video. Although, it is responsible for the hole in the wall scene.

1:54 Narration: The security guard getting punched by Nas is Colton Haynes, the star of Teen Wolf.

2:22 -2:42 Lil Nas X: The hardest part of making this music video? Honestly? Twerking in front of Jack Harlow. Very uncomfortable lmao. I felt like Jack was in a very similar situation that I was in — having a super huge song and having people counting you out. That’s how I knew he would be perfect for this song.

2:56 – 3:03 Lil Nas X: My favorite scene is where we’re all dancing in the courtyard, but I’m proud of the entire video. I knew the controversy was inevitable, but I thought the video would be super fun, which it was.

3:10 – 3:15 Christian Breslauer: The prison location was our most ambitious day of the two. Choreography scenes in general take the most time to shoot and we only had an hour to shoot each one. We made it happen though, thanks to an Allstar crew.

3:22 – 3:29 Lil Nas X: The song felt like a victory lap but also an underdog anthem, and that’s what I wanted the lyrics to reflect. I wanted a song to remind people I’m not going anywhere.

SEVENTEEN – YOUR CHOICE

Self-producing idols SEVENTEEN’s 8th EP Your Choice debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 yesterday.

Your Choice additionally catapulted to No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, ranking as America’s best-selling album of the week.

Released on June 18, the EP recorded 1.36 million sales during the first week of release, bringing in the act’s fourth million seller achievement and setting a new sales record with the most first-week sales of any album released in Korea in 2021.

SEVENTEEN will be holding their on- and off-line fan meet 2021 SVT 5TH FAN MEETING ‘SEVENTEEN in CARAT LAND’ from 6th to 8th of August.

About SEVENTEEN:

Racking up 2 billion streams and selling 7.5 million albums, SEVENTEEN has rocketed to the forefront of the global music industry fueled by a fiercely independent spirit, in-house creative ecosystem, and one irresistible work after another. The group’s innovative structure hinges on the interplay of three units: the hip-hop team led by S.COUPS, vocal team led by WOOZI, and performance team led by HOSHI. Living up to the title of “self-producing idols” the self-contained and self-empowered act has unassumingly made history and become one of the biggest K-pop groups ever due to their world-class synchronization, jaw-dropping choreography, and tight teamwork.

SEVENTEEN’s 2015 debut EP, 17 CARAT, emerged as “the longest running album on the Billboard World Albums Chart,” remaining in the chart for eleven weeks. Billboard crowned An Ode the “Best K-pop Album of 2019” as the act packed arenas and sold over half a million tickets. The EP Heng:garæ elevated them to rarified air in 2020. Over 1 million copies were sold during the week of release. Not to mention, it earned “the third best first-week sales in South Korea.” On its heels, they eclipsed 1 billion total streams on Spotify. With their following EP ; [Semicolon], the act made their U.S. TV debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

K-Pop Cravity × “Bad Habits” Release

K-POP GROUP, CRAVITY, RELEASE

PERFORMANCE VIDEO FOR BAD HABITS

OFF THEIR 3RD ALBUM, SEASON3. [HIDEOUT: BE OUR VOICE]

K-Pop boy band, CRAVITY, has released their highly anticipated performance video for “Bad Habits” today. The B-side track is off their 3rd album, SEASON3. [HIDEOUT: BE OUR VOICE], released earlier this year. With an ambitious drive to turn the year 2021 into CRAVITY’s, the members wasted no time speaking to places like Good Day New YorkiHeartET CanadaRadio.com, and many more, about their success thus far and the creative process behind the album.

“We shot the performance video for “Bad Habits” using many new techniques we haven’t tried before, for example, shooting with night vision or lip-syncing to a lower angle camera through a glass pane. The dance routine was really fun to perform and suits the mood of the song really well,” says Rapper Allen. The leader of the group, Serim, adds “We had a very short time to prepare for our B-side track promotion, but we’ve worked super hard to complete it in success.”

The main theme for the performance video of “Bad Habits” is ‘Nocturnal,’ and viewers can see the members’ dynamic moves and performance on the night of the full moon. They’ve turned into bad boys with funky visuals and will draw full attention by showing more matured and developed skills. The song “Bad Habits” is meant to showcase a different side of the CRAVITY members with a more rough and tough persona. The lyrics tell a story of 9 members who will not collapse in this world but will clearly show their own way to survive through it. EXY from K-Pop Group Cosmic Girls (WJSN) participated as a lyricist on this track with underground trap beats. In addition, 3 CRAVITY members [Taeyoung, Allen, and Hyeongjun] participated in the draft version of the “Bad Habits” choreography, further showing their artistic abilities.

MORE INFO:

CRAVITY’s debut album, released in April 2020, SEASON1. [HIDEOUT: REMEMBER WHO WE ARE] caused a wave of intrigue and excitement here in the states, with mentions in PAPER MagazineAccessiHeartJ-14MTV NewsEarmilkTeen Vogueand Rolling Stonewho referred to their title track as “An anthemic track from the K-pop rookies that combines 808-style riffs with the melodic sensibilities of early-2000s boybands (extended dance break included).” In addition to that, CRAVITY made a splash on social media, debuting at No. 12 on Billboard’s Social 50 chart for the week dated April 25.

CRAVITY has also garnered the title “Super Rookie” over in Korea due to their debut album’s success, which hit No. 1 on the U.S. @iTunes Top K-Pop Albums chart, making them the first #Kpop rookie group to debut in 2020 to earn this achievement. CRAVITY has marked their relentless movement, sweeping the rookie of the year awards at various music awards ceremonies in Korea. Even after releasing only two albums, their achievements were more than enough to show their presence in the K-pop scene, giving them the title ‘2020 super rookie.’

The inspiration behind the name, CRAVITY, came to fruition through the combination of “Creativity” and “Gravity,” Starship Entertainment’s new boy band for the first time in five years since Monsta X. Consisting of nine members, [Serim, Allen, Jungmo, Woobin, Wonjin, Minhee, Hyeongjun, Taeyoung, and Seongmin], CRAVITY, which is also an acronym for “Center of Gravity,” is meant to attract/gravitate listeners into their unique universe, by pulling them in with their creativity, charm, and pure talent. As humans, we all have our own “first experiences,”; whether that be in school, society, or in a relationship. When encountering new relationships, we sometimes prepare ourselves by running from the starting line at full speed, hearts racing, butterflies in our stomach, but at the same time, we are afraid. We are hopeful, but we also experience despair.

COPERNI AW21 – FIRST EVER ‘DRIVE-IN’ RUNWAY

Release the new AW21 collection with Adut, Leon Dame and more at huge Paris arena with the WORLDS-FIRST drive-in catwalk

Preamble

Coperni has always given priority to the sun, to daylight, to clear and distinct ideas. But with the sun cometh the night. She shows the world differently – guiding us as always, but also urging in a new time – a time to welcome in the unpredictable. Whether it’s midnight or midday, the night is our window to see what is possible.

Experience

70 participants depart from their homes in 35 electric cars. Each vehicle will navigate the streets of Paris before arriving in the great hall of the Accord Arena in Bercy, the 12th arrondissement of the City of Light. The cars and their passengers will move into the darkness of the empty hall – enough space for over 20,000 in normal times. The choreography takes place after the vehicles have moved into formation, becoming an integral part of the catwalk. The car radios turn on and announce the start of filming. Each individual set of headlights will light up as the first model passes by, allowing participants to view the collection through their car window.

Collection

The Winter 21 collection is an exploration into the complexity and the mystery of nighttime as we know it: sometimes pitch-black, sometimes dotted with stars, sometimes illuminated by the moon. The night time of celebration, of seduction and of plunging into the unknown is opposed to the nighttime of sleep, of resting our bodies and allowing dreams to take over our mind and our soul.

Frank and dynamic cuts on classic silhouettes let us glimpse the skin lying beneath. The shoulders are raised, the arms are slender – ready to enter into the darkness. Sensuality arises from a play on zipped draping. A second skin of mesh opposes the moving fringes. Bags in the shape of a padlock suggest something locked away in darkness. Maximized forms lead us towards calmness, reconciliation and time for ourselves. Softness protects the body and light becomes therapy. This night will be an experience.

CATHY MARSTON – SNOWBLIND

CATHY MARSTON’S SNOWBLIND REPLACES MRS. ROBINSON ON PROGRAM 05, APRIL 22–MAY 12, 2021

Marston’s Mrs. Robinson will premiere in the 2022 Season

Program 05 also features Helgi Tomasson’s 7 for Eight and David Dawson’s Anima Animus

San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet) announces the postponement of Mrs. Robinson, Cathy Marston’s world premiere which was scheduled to debut on Program 05, April 22–May 12, until the 2022 Season. Mrs. Robinson was choreographed for the stage in the 2020 Season and was reimagined for film in the 2021 Digital Season. As COVID-19 related obstacles created unforeseen delays with the film capture at the War Memorial Opera House this month, Helgi Tomasson and SF Ballet made the joint decision with the American Guild of Musical Artists to postpone filming to put the health and safety of staff, crew, and artists at the forefront. An archival capture of Marston’s Snowblind, created for the 2018 Unbound Festival, will replace Mrs. Robinson for Program 05, which also includes archival captures of Helgi Tomasson’s 7 for Eight and David Dawson’s Anima Animus. Members of the public can still see a short film “prelude” to Marston’s Mrs. Robinson, captured at the Fairmont San Francisco in November of 2020, beginning today through February 25 in a digital program featuring excerpts from SF Ballet’s January 14 Virtual Benefit. It will be available via YouTubeIGTVFacebook, and SF Ballet’s website.

San Francisco Ballet’s complete 2022 Season will be announced later this spring. Images of Program 05 are available at this link, and casting is available here.

ABOUT PROGRAM 05:

Helgi Tomasson’s 7 for Eight from 2004 is an “exceptionally musical Bach essay” (San Francisco Chronicle) highlighting a series of solo and ensemble numbers for eight dancers, set to portions of keyboard concertos by J.S. Bach. The 2021 Digital Season capture of 7 for Eight is from 2016, the last time the work was seen at SF Ballet, and features principal dancers Yuan Yuan Tan and Tiit Helimets, and former principal dancers Vanessa Zahorian, Gennadi Nedvigin, and Taras Domitro throughout. 7 for Eight is Tomasson’s second ballet set to Bach (his first, Aurora Polaris, premiered in 1991), and includes black-on-black costume designs by Sandra Woodall and lighting designs by David Finn. Martin West leads the SF Ballet Orchestra in 7 for Eight and throughout each ballet in Program 05.

Cathy Marston’s Snowblind “gripped from first moment to last” (San Francisco Chronicle) at its world premiere during the 2018 Unbound: A Festival of New Works. Based on Edith Wharton’s novella Ethan Frome (1911), Snowblind narrates a heart-rending love triangle between central characters Ethan Frome; his hypochondriac wife, Zeena; and Mattie, kin to Zeena, who captivates Frome after she’s hired to provide domestic support. The 2021 Digital Season stream was captured on April 25, 2018 at the War Memorial Opera House and includes principal dancers Sarah Van Patten as Zeena, Mathilde Froustey as Mattie, and Ulrik Birkkjaer as Ethan Frome. Philip Feeney arranged Snowblind’s music, which includes pieces by Wharton’s contemporaries Amy Beach and Arthur Foote, as well as Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Snowblind includes scenic and costume designs by Patrick Kinmonth and lighting designs by James F. Ingalls.

Program 05 closes with David Dawson’s Anima Animus, the choreographer’s first commission for SF Ballet, also created for the Unbound festival in 2018. Set to Ezio Bosso’s “Esoconcerto,” Anima Animus is, as Dawson puts it, “physically emotional virtuosity combined to make something human,” playing on Jungian concepts to reveal the rich contrasts between male and female psyches. Anima Animus toured with SF Ballet to Sadler’s Wells Theatre in 2019 and was “easily one of the highlights” (Seeing Dance) of the Company’s four-program London performances. The 2021 Digital Season stream of Anima Animus was captured on April 25, 2018 and includes former principal dancers Maria Kochetkova, Sofiane Sylve, and Carlo Di Lanno, and current principal dancers Luke Ingham and Wei Wang among its cast of ten.

Tickets to Program 05 are available now as single stream tickets for $29, or within the Premium Plus Digital Package, which offers unlimited viewing of the remaining programs in the 2021 Digital Season, in addition to exclusive bonus content, for $289. Tickets and packages may be purchased online at www.sfballet.org. Click here to view digital viewing tips.

Goebel’s class is now available exclusively on MasterClass, where subscribers get unlimited access to all 90+ instructors with an annual membership.

A New Zealand native, Goebel found her love of dance at the age of 10 before she formed the all-female dance group ReQuest, and later opened her own studio, the Palace Dance Studio, in Auckland. In 2012, she caught the eye of global superstar Jennifer Lopez, who hired Goebel to choreograph some numbers for her “Dance Again” world tour. Goebel went on to choreograph and direct Justin Bieber’s global hit video for “Sorry,” currently holding more than 3.3 billion views on YouTube; it’s one of the 13 videos she directed that make up Bieber’s “Purpose: The Movement” series. Now one of the most coveted choreographers of all time, Goebel has worked with some of the most iconic artists, including Janet Jackson and Nicki Minaj. She’s also worked extensively with Rihanna for more than five years, collaborating on the singer’s Savage X Fenty show, which led to a 2020 Emmy nomination for Goebel. She dominated headlines when she released her own dance video for Bieber’s 2020 single “Yummy,” followed by choreographing Jennifer Lopez’s halftime show for Super Bowl LIV, which showcased members of her award-winning dance crew, the Royal Family. Goebel is set to direct her first feature film “Murder on the Dance Floor,” which is an adaptation of her acclaimed street-dance-based production.

“I always knew that I wanted to create things that inspired young people and I turned that into my superpower,” Goebel said. “In my MasterClass, I’ll share the secrets and techniques to my creative process because when you can express confidence as a leader, choreographer and director, it’s contagious.”

Designed for anyone who wants to find their creative voice, Goebel’s MasterClass will give members a unique window into her creative process, from the inner work she has done to hone her style to a breakdown of how she choreographs and directs live dance performances and music videos. Through honest and vulnerable storytelling, Goebel will open up about her personal journey, from starting a studio at age 17 to pursuing her passion around the world, sharing insights on how to unlock creativity, develop your brand and harness the power of what makes you unique. Goebel will show members how to find their unique voice by letting their spirit go free, allowing them to unleash the creative being within.

Teyana Taylor has dropped her highly anticipated third LP, THE ALBUM, today via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings. THE ALBUM features special guests Rick Ross, Erykah Badu, Quavo, Missy Elliott, Future, Big Sean & more.

Stream THE ALBUM HERE

Tapped by Pitchfork as one of the “most anticipated albums of the summer, THE ALBUM also features Teyana’s new graduation anthem “Made It,” pegged by NPR as a “a triumphant, isolation-proof anthem for the Class of 2020,” the Janet Jackson-approved viral sensation “Bare Wit Me” the Kanye West-produced “We Got Love.” and “How You Want It? (HYWI?)” featuring King Combs.

Since 2018’s KTSE, Teyana’s star has continued to rise; from her successful career as video director and continued investment in her production company, The Aunties, to her acting and modeling career, to a string of scintillating self-directed singles and videos, including “Morning” with Kehlani. THE ALBUM is poised to take her to the next level.

THE ALBUM is the highly anticipated successor to K.T.S.E. (June 2018), Teyana’s second album, one of the five G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam albums produced by Kanye West during his 2018 sojourn in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. K.T.S.E. (acronym for Keep That Same Energy) set off an 18-month chain reaction for Teyana, starting with its summertime Top 10 R&B smash “Gonna Love Me.” She performed “Gonna Love Me” (in a medley with “Rose In Harlem,”another K.T.S.E. track) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Hip-hop audiences embraced the “Gonna Love Me” remix featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Raekwon, whose video was directed by Teyana. K.T.S.E. spun off a hot new single and video for Teyana in early 2019, the explicit “WTP (Work This P***y).”The video was nominated for “Best Dance Performance” at the 32nd annual BET Soul Train Awards. The third single from K.T.S.E. was the evocative “Issues/Hold On.” After slaying the audience with the song live on Ellen in April 2019, Teyana was surprised on-air when Ellen presented her with the RIAA gold award plaque for “Gonna Love Me,” bringing it all full circle.

About TEYANA TAYLOR:

Being a jack of trades has enabled Teyana Taylor to become a master of all. From her smoky melodic vocals to her dynamic dance moves, the R&B superstar entertainer dips in dives between her talents as singer, songwriter, producer, director, dancer/choreographer, actor, fitness guru, model, and mother. When it comes to describing herself, the Harlem native can only think of one word: Everything.

“I literally can do everything. I never look at anything as being impossible,” she explains. “I exhaust all options to make what happen when I need to make happen.” Her mantra made her an early favorite to artists like Pharrell, who she signed her first deal with, and later choreographed videos for artists like Beyoncé and Jay-Z. In 2014, Teyana’s love for the arts and R&B earned her the title of the first woman signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint.

Between R&B’s identity crisis in the 2010s, Teyana dropped her debut album VII, with tracks like “Maybe” (featuring Yo Gotti and Pusha T) and the sultry “Just Different” shaping her musical persona. The critically acclaimed album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 2014, cementing her position in today’s modern R&B field. “I fought for that raw, hood necessary R&B and now I feel like it’s better than ever,” she says.

After spicing up the R&B charts, Teyana was blessed with the arrival of her daughter Junie with husband and NBA star Iman Shumpert in 2015. “I do all of this for my baby. She’s who I do it for,” she says about Iman “Junie” Tayla Shumpert Jr., her main source of inspiration. “I always show her how to be a leader and a businesswoman. I want her to believe that she can be anything she wants to be and it not be a shocker that she’s a female doing it all.” Soon after, Teyana went on to star in the internet-breaking video for Kanye West’s “Fade,” and scored her first MTV Moonman for “Best Choreography” at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.

But it wasn’t until the release of her second album project K.T.S.E.(released June 2018) that the world caught up with Teyana’s talents. With her all-female production company The Aunties, Teyana self-directed videos for “WTP,” the RIAA gold-selling single “Gonna Love Me,” (whose remix features Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Raekwon), and recently, “Issues/Hold On.”

Teyana has also directed videos for her peers like T.I. (“You”), Monica (“Commitment”), and Lil Duval (“Pull Up” featuring Ty Dolla $ign) with fans like Ms. Lauryn Hill and Elton John praising her boss moves. Part of what makes Teyana stand out from the rest is her ability to move with precision and poise in everything she does.

From the studio to the stage, every idea is a project with the singer front and center with a vision all her own. With her musical inspirations like Aaliyah, Teena Marie, Mint Condition and Janet Jackson speaking to her soul, Teyana is aware her mission is larger than life. “I’m working on me every day and I think that’s my purpose,” she says, comparing her life to a never-ending book. “I’m still going, still mastering and being a better me.”
