The Underground Chicago Review

By: Emily Bunn × Vaughn Lowery

360 Magazine was invited to Chicago’s most-exclusive nightclub for an evening of merrymaking, music and memories. The Underground Chicago recently reopened last weekend after a fifteen-month lockdown and is yet again revitalizing Chicago’s VIP social scene. The choice club for A-listers– including celebrities like Justin Bieber, UsherLaBron James, David BeckhamWill.I.Am, and Miley Cyrus– The Underground consistently delivers elevated experiences surrounding music, cocktails, fashion, art and design. Entrepreneur and owner of The Underground, Billy Dec, comments on the club’s long-awaited re-opening:

The COVID pandemic has wiped out many live music and nightclub venues across the country,” says Dec. “Historically, nightclubs have had a pivotal role in cultural evolution. The Underground family fought to stay alive and reopen because we see it as a major responsibility—it’s our duty to elevate our community platform so people can come together to celebrate music, fashion, dance, art and design. After an unprecedented and impactful run, we look forward to constantly elevating and innovating our industry and The Underground experience fueled with excitement, creativity, service and positive energy.”

The vibrant ambiance of The Underground reflected the colorful diversity of guests inside, all of which were busy unleashing their signature moves on the packed dance floor. The discotheque throbbed with ecstatic energy and heavy bass lines all night long. A state-of-the-art sound system blared trendy music across all corners of the club for all to hear. The ambiance of the tunes was complimented by thrilling pyrotechnics and digital screens that projected artsy flicks.

Upon arriving at the legendary establishment, 360 Magazine was greeted with service from hospitable, welcoming staff members– including security and a stylish porter. On the particular night we visited, Lil Jon made a star appearance. Lil Jon, the musical mastermind behind releases such as Turn Down for What, Get Low, Cyclone, and Alive (with Offset and 2 Chainz), filled the club with energy and exuberance. Soundscapes swelled across every crowded corner of the club as the rapper delivered an incredible performance.

Lil Jon wasn’t the only celebrity guest, as he performed alongside Emmy award-winning TV host, actor and personality, Billy Dec. Dec also is the restaurateur and owner of the iconic nightclub but is best known for his roles in “Chicagoland,” “Mollywood,” “One Small Hitch,” and “Adventures in the Sin Bin,” among others. Dec has also appearance on many national broadcast programs, including NBC’s Today Show and NBC Today in Nashville.

Looking ahead, Dec is set to open The Underground’s sister venue, The Underground Cocktail Club. Scheduled to open over Lollapalooza weekend (July 30-Aug 1), this new establishment will feature a separate entrance to The Underground’s building and emphasize the nostalgic, vintage appeal of the 1920’s. The Underground Cocktail Club will focus on creating innovative cocktails and featuring more live performances. Next time 360 Magazine comes to Chicago, we can’t wait to have another memorable, lively night at the Underground.

Chris Lake × Fisher

By Michelle Pisnoy × Vaughn Lowery

6,000 EDM-loving college students filed into the Shrine Expo Hall Thursday prepared to dance the night away. The floor and balcony were packed as Chris Lake and Fisher took to the stage at their sold out show. Throughout the evening, a horde of fans pulsed to every beat the B2B DJ’s created.

At 10:00 pm, the mob of music lovers got rambunctious in anticipation of their performance. Minutes afterwards, the lights were dimmed and the audience began to cheer. Bright lights flashed, the beat began to intensify and the EDM lovers got even rowdier. Fisher and Chris Lake came out and started to perform mixes of different songs. The duo kept the audience engaged by switching between different beats and songs like “Crowd Control.” As soon as the track commenced, the fans began jumping up and down as well as singing along to the lyrics.

Chris Lake then played hit song, “Turn Off the Lights,” featuring Alexis Roberts. The LED lighting technology was in succinct to every beat of the record. At times, almost blinded the hypersensitive congregation, but they didn’t appear to mind. The night came to a culmination when Fisher played “Losing It.” He added synthetic melodies which made it more enchanting than the studio version. The crowd absolutely lost it, singing at the top of their lungs until the lights turned back on.

Barns Courtney

BARNS COURTNEY’S NEW SINGLE IS OUT TODAY.

North American Tour with The Wombats kicks off September 27 at Los Angeles Belasco Theater and includes October 30 at Terminal 5 in NYC.

Barns Courtney has a quarter of a Billion Cumulative Streams Worldwide.

Today, Barns Courtney returns with his first new music since the 2017 release of his debut album, The Attractions Of Youth, which racked up more than 240 million global streams and found him performing on such shows as CONAN and The Late Late Show with James Corden as well as for audiences around the world in what Rolling Stone hailed as a stomping, swaggering rock & roll balancing act teetering between blinding light and total darkness.

99” his new single, evokes the giddy bliss of coming of age at the turn of the century and the comedown that grown-up life can be. The two-track single includes another new song, “Good Thing,” as the B-side. Both tracks are from Barns Courtney’s forthcoming album, details of which will be revealed soon. Download/stream “99” and “Good ThingHERE.

Barns Courtney says, “This is the first song where I’ve ever been able to inject my true personality. I grew up in a suburban Seattle playing video games and watching Pokémon. “99” has got genuine sadness, but it’s got playfulness, and it references the nerdy parts of my personality where I’m in Seattle in the late 90’s with my friends in front of the TV screen playing Nintendo 64. It’s got that silly playfulness where I reel off list of dated games consoles at the end. That sense of poking fun at yourself. The universal goal is that to be successful is to have shiny status symbols, so there are people who’ve grown up and got the house and the Ferrari, but here I am clutching my old Sega Megadrive.

Barbra Streisand: On The Couch

Barbra Streisand: On the Couch, Shares Deep Insight Into One Of America’s Most Beloved Icons

The widely popular On the Couch series by Alma Bond, Ph.D. has given us an opportunity to discover the lives of Marilyn Monroe, Hillary Clinton, and Jackie O through the eyes of renowned New York psychoanalyst, Dr. Darcy Dale. The fictionalized biographies provided a unique and revealing perspective of their lives.

Now, readers are invited to learn about screen and recording icon Barbra Streisand. In Barbra Streisand: On the Couch, Bond captures the details found in other biographies dedicated to the life of Barbra in a way that provides deep insight into her personality and character.

Dr. Darcy Dale―renowned, pioneering New York City psychiatrist whose expertise has been sought by such larger-than-life women as Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and Hillary Clinton―is confronted by Barbra, dismayed after thirty years of minimally successful therapy. Over the course of a year, Dr. Dale conducts an intimate psychoanalysis, breaking through ego defense mechanisms, and repressions to go deep into the heart and mind of one of America’s last remaining superstars. Barbra’s many dimensions come alive as we hear her story in her own words. She fluctuates between self-inflation and insecurity. She cracks wise. She becomes angry. She weeps. For better or worse, Dr. Dale sees Barbra in all of her raw, most human, aspects, giving readers unprecedented access to her pain and joy.

Barbra is funny, a bit abrasive, but very intelligent. Bond provides interesting insights into what Barbra could have been thinking during pinnacle times in her life, and her state of mind from a psychoanalyst’s point of view. While this book is technically fiction, the facts themselves are all true. Only the thoughts and feelings attributed to Barbra are fictitious, along with the story of her “analysis.” Dr. Bond’s extensive research into the life of Barbra Streisand, along with her professional knowledge of psychology and her beautiful style of writing, give fans of Barbra’s work and her persona fresh insight into a complicated woman – making this biography an enthralling and entertaining read!

“It’s easy to want to get to know the essential Barbra and want to hear her story,” says Dr. Bond. “After reading pretty much everything ever written on Barbra, and then having written a book in which my alter ego, also a psychoanalyst, carries on numerous fictionalized sessions with her over the space of a year, I think I have a very good idea what and how Barbra thinks. To say that Barbra Streisand is an amazing woman is an understatement.”

Alma H. Bond received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, and became a highly successful psychoanalyst in private practice for 37 years in New York City. She “retired” to become a full-time writer. She has written 23 books and her popular On the Couch series has received excellent reviews. Jackie O: On the Couch, the first in the Couch series, received a Pinnacle Book Achievement Award. Bond also wrote the play, “Maria,” about the life of Maria Callas. The play was produced off-off Broadway, toured the South, and was produced in London.
