Astroworld Festival

Popular rapper and Houston-native Travis Scott hosted the Astroworld Festival this past weekend. The festival resulted in eight fatalities and dozens injured. How did the once cherished Astroworld Festival turn so dark so fast, and how can society learn from this atrocity?

This year’s Astroworld Festival marked the third of an annual series since 2018. The festival is held in Houston, Texas, where Scott grew up. Scott’s third studio album attributes directly back to Houston, being named after a theme park from Scott’s childhood, Astroworld. Before the festival was held in 2019, Scott was given a key to the city of Houston from the city’s mayor. The rapper received the key during his Astroworld Tour while performing in Houston. While presenting Scott with the key, mayor Sylvester Turner praised him for the recognition and reputation that Scott linked with the city of Houston. During the presentation Turner also announced that Scott had inspired the city to bring back another amusement park, like the original Astroworld, to the city.

Later in 2019, the second annual Astroworld Festival was held where a prelude to the events in this past year’s festival would be showcased. Much like the most recent festival, fans stormed the venue and three people were reported to be trampled. Such patterns of seemingly aggressive behaviors have been associated with Scott in the past that date back to 2015. Two arrests of Scott have been reported for similar behaviors of prompting fans to engage in disorderly conduct(s). Both instances involved Scott encouraging fans to breach security at music festivals.

After another successful year of the festival in 2019, the annual scheduling came to a halt amidst the ongoing pandemic in 2020. With much anticipation due to the cancellation of the festival in the past year, Scott announced the third annual festival in May 2021. This year the festival would be extended to two days “due to overwhelming demand as well as rave reviews around the festival’s incredibly curated lineup.” The official lineup was not released until October 26 of 2021, a little over a week before the festival was scheduled. Popular artists in the lineup included SZA, Young Thug, 21 Savage and Lil Baby, accompanied by Travis Scott as the leading headliner of the festival. Scott promoted the festival on his socials and referred to members of the lineup as “avengers.” In the same post Scott also communicated that the festival was sold out, but he had managed to acquire more tickets so that more fans could be in attendance.

November 5, 2021, marked the beginning of what was supposed to be the two-day Astroworld Festival. Festival gates opened at 1pm this past Friday, and mayhem began shortly after. A lot of the set protocols and rules surrounding security at the festival were disregarded early before the festival commenced. Security was failing to enforce ID and coronavirus vaccination checks, as well as other rules surrounding prohibited items and general security checks. The performance areas were noticeably packed around 7pm, and the crowds only grew as Scott’s performance was approaching. A countdown started thirty minutes prior to when Scott was set to perform, and as the countdown crawled down, so did the available space for those at the venue.

When Scott finally did take the stage, the intense compressing of the crowd really took off. The squeezing of the crowds became unoccupiable as the first song in Scott’s performance began. Fans in the crowd had nowhere to move, and if there was movement it was inevitably devastating. People were falling onto the floor, piling on top of each other in some areas. Individuals began to become so crushed that they were passing out in the crowds. Fans that were close enough to the front of the stage begged security to pull them out of the crowds to safety, As the night continued, paramedics were seen amidst the masses of fans performing CPR, treating unconscious people and even carrying off lifeless bodies.

During the chaos, Scott continued his performance taking few short pauses to notify security of fans being unconscious in the crowds. Kylie Jenner, Scott’s baby mother of two, posted to social media a video of the crowds at the festival with a noticeable ambulance in the mass of people. Multiple videos and images have been posted from fans at the festival across social media platforms. Specific videos recount the fearful experiences that individuals went through, and some even recount people trying to notify security of the chaos that was occurring throughout the swarms of fans in the crowd. The festival continued, forcing over three hundred people to be treated on-site by medical personnel, dozens being hospitalized and eight individuals dead.

How did the festival turn out so gruesome? On the Astroworld Festival webpage there are clear rules, regulations and precautions written out that were to be followed. One of the main problems that resulted with this festival was the insufficient quality of security and amount of medical personnel/ supplies onsite. Fans were spotted running past security throughout the day leading to Scott’s performance. Security checks were not followed as intensely as they were publicized to be. An insufficient number of medical supplies and personnel showed cracks in the groundwork of the festival throughout the day and when Scott’s performance started.

How can festivals be prevented from tragedies like this from reoccurring? A few simple tactics can be implemented that all lead back to ensuring efficient safety of all people in attendance of a festival. To ensure a safe venue, festivals must be held at safe venues with secure layouts. Creating a reliable layout with a well-organized security team can allow for a safer and more comfortable experience for everyone. Making sure the facility and its grounds have been well-inspected, kept and prepared for the festival are key elements to a safe experience. A well-managed and prepared security team and plan for the facility of an event can also ensure a safer experience for a festival.

This time around, BIA opted to give us a deeper look into her universe as an Afro-Puerto Rican and Italian artist raised in Massachusetts switching from Spanish to English with sharp and witty verses in a new, contemporary hip-hop style that reflects how global her music is.

Meanwhile, in the music video, directed by Nigerian-born, British director Daps, we see BIA basking in Puerto Rico, the land of her grandparents, interacting with the people, embracing the culture, and enjoying the idyllic beaches, while looking strong and confident, aligned with the message of “Besito.”

“Besito” featuring G Herbo comes after “Whole Lotta Money Remix” featuring Nicki Minaj. The remix, which has garnered 18 million views on YouTube, came to be after Minaj fell in love with BIA’s “fresh” hip-hop and wanted to jump on the track. The original song became a viral sensation thanks to TikTok with over 275,000 streams on the platform and attracting star support from Cardi BKylie JennerKendall JennerLizzoLil Nas X, and many more.

Premiering today is also the Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3 where BIA is one of Rihanna’s special guests performing at the event. MADAME TUSSAUDS HOLLYWOOD WAX MUSEUM

When you walk through Hollywood, you can find 2,690 stars along the sidewalk calling out famous and celebrated singers, songwriters, actors, directors, and anyone who has had a lasting impact on Hollywood. You can also escape the heat and bustle of the city by exploring Madame Tussauds where you are treated to life-size replicas of all your favorite Hollywood Superstars.

Madame Tussauds Hollywood features three floors filled with wax replicas of singers, late night hosts, actors and actresses, and even famous characters from movies like Boris Karloff as The Mummy. You are first greeted with a wax figure of Baywatch Zac Efron in front of the Santa Monica Skyline, a massive King Kong next to the Empire State building, and a game face ready Kobe Bryant. After you purchase your tickets, you are welcomed into the museum and given free rein to tour and visit all three floors. Following COVID-19 guidelines, guests are to start from the third floor and make our way down for one-way traffic to flow better. The first-floor features Hollywood’s newest members and current pop culture icons: Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Jenner, Morgan Freeman, Simon Cowell and more. And not forgetting to mention, the brand-new Ariana Grande wax figure dressed in her Rule The World music video outfit. The figurine is also posed in a pink-themed set from her famous 7 Rings video with a pyramid of champagne glasses behind her. This is a new piece for the museum and not yet updated in all of Madame Tussauds locations, so it is definitely not to be missed!

On the second floor, you pass Meryl Streep, Obama, and Jim Carrey; the second floor also features all of old Hollywood’s stars: Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, John Wayne, esteemed directors: Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, and even actors portraying characters from popular films of that era: Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins) locked in his cell, Danny (John Travolta) next to his red-hot rod, and Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp). After you tour through Old Hollywood, you arrive at the last floor featuring all your favorite stars from the 90’s: Britney Spears, Tupac, Snoop Dog, Michael Jackson, Shakira, Beyoncé, Madonna, and so on. This section features the ultimate 90’s bedroom and would transport you back in time.

After your trip down memory lane, you will arrive the last feature in the museum, a Marvel theme wax exhibition, where you can check out a few Marvel cast members figures in full costume: Spiderman, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), etc. Though it is not compulsory, you can also purchase the 4D Marvel Movie screening for an additional $5 for an immersive experience. The glasses the museum provides will allow you to see the 3D aspect of the film, and be prepared for sound effects, water, bubbles and even ropes to hit your feet. All of these elements make for an out of this world experience, the movie is 10 minutes long. Make sure to put any items you don’t want getting wet away! If you are not a fan of getting wet, I recommend sitting father back. Stop by the gift shop on your way out and grab a cup, key chain, or shirt to remember your visit to Madame Tussauds Hollywood.

In addition to offering a fun and safe day out of the house, you are also able to learn about the process of making a wax figure, see examples of the process, and in pre-Covid times purchase your own wax mold of your hand. It takes about 800 hours to create a wax figure, beginning with the detailed measurement of the model from the circumference of your head to the width of your ankle. Every measurement is specific to ensure the wax figure looks as accurate as possible. After the measurements are taken, workers begin sculpting, painting, designing, making the costumes and finally dressing and staging the wax figures. This is no easy task and while some figures are more life-like and realistic than others, they are all impressive. It really makes you question who in the room was real and who was a wax figure! The detail in every figure is astonishing, from freckles, scars, tattoos, and hair. It feels as if you are really meeting and interacting with these stars rather than standing next to a wax figure.

Lamborghini Urus: Super-SUV

The marriage of a sports car’s athleticism and an SUV’s versatility is evident in the groundbreaking new creation from Lamborghini: The 2021 Lamborghini Urus. This super-SUV is the first of its kind on the market, offering an exhilarating driving experience to those behind the wheel. With the ability to host five passengers, this vehicle packs in pleasure and practicality wherever you go. The manufacturer elaborates on the invigorating experience of driving their super-SUV:

“It is the absolute all-round super sports car and more. It allows you to explore new paths and new ways to express yourself—to accept challenges confidently and to live life to the fullest. You are not afraid to go far: this is what you aspire to. Unlock any road, unlock your personality.”

The Urus rivals similar super SUV models like 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, but beats out the Trackhawk in terms of speed. Its twin turbo engine delivers 217kW per tonne, as compared to the Trackhawk, which only delivers 212kW per tonne. Further, the silhouette of the Urus resembles the electric Jaguar I-Pace, presenting a similarly aerodynamic exterior.

Other comparable models include the Audi Q8. While both vehicles have a top speed of 189.5mph (305 km/h), the Urus is able to hit top speed in 3.6 seconds, which is two tenths of a second quicker than the Audi Q8. Just like the distinguished sophistication of opera music, hearing the roar of the Lamborghini motor is music to driver’s ears.

Design

The interior of the luxe vehicle is inspired by aero-space design and driver oriented instrumentation. With a gear shift resembling a jet’s throttle and a start button hidden under a red flip cover, drivers are met with power and control immediately upon entering the driver’s seat. There are several interior cubby storage compartments, such as door pockets and a bin behind the floating center stack. With up to 22 ft3 of space in the car’s cabin  and the ability to fit 5 passengers, the Urus is spacious–especially when compared to other super cars.

Offering a choice of finishes–from leather to Alcantra, to wood and aluminum, or carbon-fiber­–the Urus is sure to look good from the inside out. The manufacturer now offers more customization than ever before. Clientele can choose from a selection of vibrant, eye-catching colors, including Giallo Inti (yellow), Arancio Borealis (orange), or Verde Mantis (green) with the available Pearl Capsule package. Alternatively, the standard palette offers more subtly attractive options, including black, grey, blue, and white colorways. Any of these fashionable exteriors create a beautiful contrast with the black and carbon fiber-trim. This model doesn’t fail to uphold the signature Lamborghini design with its Y-shaped details, front hood with a center peak, and crossed lines on the rear hood. With frameless doors and hexagonal detailing, this Lamborghini epitomizes modern glamour.

Technology 

Not one, not two, but three TFT LCD display screens are installed inside the Urus, transforming the interior to feel like a cockpit. The screens provide crisp graphics and are easy to view, without the need for any clunky buttons. You can use your finger on the touch screen to write in your destination, or other search requests.

The Lamborghini infotainment system is installed with a Bang and Olufsen radio sound system, smart phone interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Audio, a DVD-audio/video reader, 3D maps navigation system, USB capabilities, Bluetooth connection, and voice control recognition. Additionally, the vehicle has a fully digital gauge cluster.

If you’re looking for further refinement, the factory offers an array of optional lavish features for purchase. These features include front seats with ventilation, seats with massage functions, an upgraded sound system, the rear-seat entertainment system, and available Off-Road drive modes. A stand out is the optional hands-free tailgate feature for when you’ve got your hands full, just lift your foot to trigger the sensor beneath the rear bumper to activate the trunk and make loading or unloading your vehicle effortless.

Safety

Drivers feel secure as they transport their precious cargo in this super-SUV. With aluminum tires–21’ x 9.5’ in the front of the vehicle, and 21’ x 10.5’ in the rear–the Urus has some major brawn. At the same time, the multi-link front and rear suspension, with air springs, allows for smooth riding. The Urus is athletic without compromising safety, as evident in its quick steering and high-speed cornering modes.

The car comes standard with several key safety features such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology, standard blind spot monitoring, a night vision camera, available self-parking and driver assist, and an audio theft deterrent. Additionally, it is equipped with front, side, and overhead airbags to protect drivers and occupants in case of emergency.

Explore new paths in your Urus as you take on any terrain together.  Its Pirelli P Zero front and rear tires, offered in 21’ to 23’ size options, promise traction and performance. And if you want to take a pit stop along the way? The impressive braking system is equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes and front aluminum 10 piston brake calipers. These brakes, along with the premium shock absorbers, bring the car to a smooth halt from 70 mph to a full stop in 149 ft. Additionally, the car has front and rear anti-roll bars for extra braking power.

While the manufacturer doesn’t offer a lengthy warranty– providing three years with no mileage cap, without any complimentary scheduled maintenance–this car is built to last. However, if you’re looking for that extra protection, there are several extended warranty and maintenance plans available for purchase.

Performance

The Urus is powered by a powerful 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an output of 641hp, producing a maximum torque of 850 Nm (626,93 lb.-ft.) @ 2,2520-4,400 rpm. Feeling the need for speed? Accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and reach a top speed of 190 mph, or 305 km/h in this sporty SUV. The 8-speed transmission is automatic with driver selectable mode, sequential shift control with steering wheel controls, and an oil cooler. Additionally, the engine has its own auto stop-start feature. The vehicle has eight cylinders, and a total displacement of 3,996 cm³.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, this Lamborghini gets 12mph in the city, or 17mph on the highway. The fuel tank has a capacity of 22.5 G. Equipped with AWD, you can drive anywhere with confidence and power.

Cost

The Urus’ MSRP totals $218,009, with a destination charge of $3,995. Compared to the rest of Lamborghini’s luxurious portfolio, this particular model is the most affordable and versatile option. Just after winning the 2020 NBA Championship, 360 Magazine got the chance to pilot the new Rolls-Royce Cullinan in a glamorous royal violet. This new edition takes the prize for being one of the most deluxe SUVs on the market, defining the post-opulence of the brand.

Priced at about $340,350, the massive machine encompasses greatness, class and refinement. This bespoke vehicle focuses on the purest craftsmanship by retaining the same DNA as its brothers and sisters. Its name comes from the exquisite Cullinan diamond, so it is clear that wealth is featured in all fields.

During a sunset in Malibu, 360 Magazine was pleased to witness the extravagance of the SUV first hand and was able to record its faultless driving capabilities. A film, by Jeff Langlois, is featured on both our Instagram and YouTube and exhibits the impeccable excursion from a birds-eye perspective.

Design

The skeleton is a perfect marriage of sophistication and power, bringing a classic SUV composition to an all-new level. The striking purple exterior ensures travelers will arrive poshly to any event. The panoramic glass roof is designed for a sensation of the outdoors, while the privacy glass allows passengers to remain discreet. With a spacious back seat, buyers can select the Center Console option that allows passengers sitting in the back to activate a massage feature. KUWTK Comes to an End

With a shocking post on instagram, Kim Kardashian West announced the long-running reality series following her and her family is coming to an end after 14 years on air. “It is with heavy hearts that we’ve made the difficult decision as a family to say goodbye,” she wrote. The show will end with its 20th season, scheduled to air early next year.

Keeping Up With the Kardashians, featuring Kim and her sisters, Kourtney, Khloé, Kendall and Kylie alongside their brother, Rob, and their mother, Kris Jenner, became a staple of pop culture in the early 21st century and helped shape the family’s careers and lives. It is a show that propelled the popularity of reality TV and what consumers expected of it, but the suspension of the show comes as no surprise. Since the beginning of their careers as reality TV stars, the family has gained millions of social media followers and they have become a household name. Besides show ratings beginning to drop, the family simply no longer needs the promotion anymore.

A spokesperson for E! Network said in a statement, “We thank the entire extended family and our production partners, Bunim Murray and Ryan Seacrest Productions, for embarking on this global phenomenon together.”

This does not mean the end of the Kardashian-Jenner dynasty. In fact, it is highly possible that they may try to push for a deal with online streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu. By not being restricted by cable TV limitations and advertising structures, the family’s franchise could expand in countless directions including a more genuine representation of them as people. There is tremendous opportunity for them in the digital world. It is no lie that reality TV is often scripted and made to be a parody of sorts, so breaking away from that formula could expand the family’s fanbase and show that they have matured past that.

With a networth of $30 million, Kendall Jenner has become the world’s highest paid model doing runways for Versace, Burberry, Tom Ford, and countless other luxury brands. After seven years, she has become one of the most influential figures in the fashion industry. Her younger sister, Kylie Jenner, gained her success after curating Kylie Cosmetics in 2015. Since then, she has also branched out into skincare and was granted the controversial title of ‘youngest self-made billionaire’ by Forbes in 2019. Their older sister, Khloe, ventured into the clothing industry with her own company called Good American which claims to have ‘invented a new women’s size in jeans’ and runs on a platform of inclusivity.

Kim, the one responsible for gaining media attention and bringing her family into the spotlight, has also ventured into the cosmetics business with her cosmetics and fragrance company, KKW Beauty which generated around $100 million of sales in 2019. Along with this, she has turned her shapewear line, Skims, into a success after a rocky start and has announced a social justice podcast on Spotify.

These are few of many of the family’s accomplishments and despite the countless controversies surrounding them, it is no lie that they helped to shape pop culture into what it is today and will continue to do so.

Hip Hop fans everywhere have been buzzing about Travis Scott’s recent collaboration with McDonald’s that includes both a meal and special merchandise.

The “Travis Scott Meal” is the artist’s go-to McDonald’s order: a quarter pounder with lettuce and bacon, a medium fry, a sprite, and barbecue sauce. The meal costs $6 and is available for dine-in, carry-out, and at the drive-thru. Although this is not an unusual order, fans have been rushing to get the superstars meal of choice.

For those that want the McDonald’s kick without the calories, Scott released an extensive line of McDonald’s x Cactus Jack merchandise. The merch, available on Scott’s website, channels the energy of Scott’s hip hop culture and the classic love for McDonald’s that fans everywhere have in common.

Fans can choose from a variety of clothing such as t-shirts, hoodies, and pants, all of which have a unique Cactus Jack and McDonald’s design. Some clothing pieces display a more subtle love for McDonald’s like a simple McDonald’s logo, while others illustrate a Travis Scott figurine reining over a quarter pounder meal.

For fans that want to display their love for Cactus Jack and McDonald’s in other ways, Scott also dropped accessories and decorations. This includes a variety of rugs, a Cactus Pack blanket, and the McNugget body pillow that has gained a lot of popularity on social media.

This is the first celebrity collaboration McDonald’s has done since 1992 when the company partnered with Michael Jordan. McDonald’s is hoping this celebrity collaboration will boost their sales that are down from the previous year by thirty percent. McDonald’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, brushed this loss off as a result of the pandemic.

In the announcement of the collaboration made by McDonald’s, Scott explained he “couldn’t be more excited to bring the collaboration to life.” He also expressed how the collaboration is “bringing together two iconic worlds.”

In the same announcement, McDonald’s U.S. Chief Marketing officer Morgan Flatley said “everyone has a favorite McDonald’s meal, no matter who you are.” He also mentioned that the company is “excited to bring the Travis Scott Meal to a McDonald’s near you.”

Scott promoted the collaboration on both his Instagram and Twitter accounts. He included a photo in the drive-thru window flashing a McDonald’s bag and a bedazzled chain, as well as a promotional video featuring an explanation of his order with his classic Travis Scott autotune.

The excitement began on September third when McDonald’s tweeted a cactus and hamburger emoji hinting at a collaboration. Travis then retweeted this tweet with “CACTUS JACK FOR MCDONALD’S” and stimulated excitement within his fanbase.

This promotion will be available until October 4th, but merchandise could be gone sooner. This merchandise channels the nostalgia of McDonald’s from the past while still including the bold energy that is Travis Scott. Whether you’re more of a hip-hop fan or a McDonald’s regular, the extensive merchandise page will give everyone something to choose from. To put it simply, and in the words of Travis Scott, “It’s Lit.”

Kylie Jenner Appears on Vogue Hong Kong Cover

In recent months, the metropole Hong Kong appears almost daily in news feeds: ongoing protests, clashes with Beijing, the impacts of the new security law, and more. This week, however, Hong Kong finds itself in the news with a less then predictable name: Kylie Jenner.

The 22-year-old makeup and reality television mogul graces Hong Kong Vogue’s self-titled “Action Issue.” She poses in cranberry latex with white hot nails with the text “Act Now” printed across her lap. While the imagery of the cover is elegant, many are calling into question the decision to have Jenner fronting the issue, citing the ongoing dynamics currently in Hong Kong. The cover reveal comes just two days after Hong Kong delays its election, in what many are calling an effort to support the growing pro-Beijing presence in the city and cripple pro-democracy candidates. Both revelations follow years of protests in favor of democracy, with heightened tensions over the last few months due to the coronavirus and a new national security law imposed at the end of June.

Vogue Hong Kong cites on Instagram: “At the age of just 22, her beauty brand #KylieCosmetics has achieved far reaching success, and she is also active in charitable causes including funding surgeries for children with cleft lips and palate through Smile Train” as its reasons behind making Jenner the cover star. Similarly, Jenner gushed about her excitement on her own Instagram, but made no reference to the current political situation in the region. The cover appears especially interesting in context of the September issue of Vogue U.K. which features 20 different activists photographed in black and white.

Diet Prada on Instagram, a notorious critic of the fashion community, writes “Y tho?” when questioning the “Kendall for Pepsi move.” The latter statement is in reference to Kylie’s older sister Kendall Jenner’s own brush with controversy. Severe backlash and accusations of political tone deafness followed her now infamous 2017 Pepsi ad. In the ad, Kendall Jenner hands a police officer a Pepsi at a protest, seemingly in reference to the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests.

Comments, especially on social media, have called out Jenner and Vogue Hong Kong for the decision. “$5 she doesn’t even know what’s going on in Hong Kong,” joked one Instagram user. Another argued for criticism to be steered away from Jenner and instead towards the magazine: “How about you actually put an activist on the cover that stands for the message you’re trying to portray?” Currently, neither Vogue Hong Kong nor Kylie Jenner have commented on the criticism.
