Transport Yourself To Another Time

Take a Walk Through the Past

One of the things Americans love most about visiting Europe is the feeling of being transported back in time as they explore seemingly ancient architecture and history. It was just that sentiment that captured program leader David Sheppe’s heart back in the 1980s when he was an American living in Paris, and now he is rallying others who love history, art and culture to save Paris’ oldest church.

Walking through Saint Germain des Prés is like taking a journey to the past. Visitors witness centuries-old art depicting historical and religious figures, intricately decorated capitals portraying aspects of the Old and New Testaments, plants and animals and even monastic life.

Without the help of those with a heart for our shared human history, though, this incredible testament to art and culture will fall apart. That’s why the American Friends for the Preservation of Saint Germain des Prés have started the Adopt a Saint Germain Star™ campaign.

Adopt a Saint Germain Star™

This effort garners funding for a multi-year, multi-tranche restoration of the church’s art, windows, stonework and structural integrity.

• Donors may go online today and adopt one or more of the hundreds of stars in the church’s ancient, vaulted ceiling.

• The Adopt a Saint Germain Star™ campaign mirrors a similar, highly successful campaign already underway in France.

• The entire Monk’s Choir was recently and magnificently completed, due in large part to the generosity of private donors in France and the United States, and two Adopt a Star campaigns.

• There are more than 800 stars currently available; donations will directly impact the preservation of this historic structure and its beautiful celestial ceiling.

• The long-term need is to fund the restoration of the Transept (2017) and the Nave (2018), including their ceilings, which show a total of 3,000 additional stars.

Lucky Charms

Red-Eyed Toads and Worry Dolls: The Strange World of Lucky Charms

We’ve always been a superstitious species. There are plenty of people who get worried when a black cat crosses their path or simply cross their fingers while they’re hoping for a spot of good luck.

A list of lucky charms from around the world has been put together by netentstalker.com in an interesting and entertaining infographic. If you want to find out what keeps the kids safe in Guatemala or how Peru has more than its share of charms, check out the list today.

To give you a quick taster, here are just some of the strange and wonderful lucky charms people take seriously around the globe:

  1. Three legged toads that promise you money and prosperity are all the rage in China. The Jin Chan is a red-eyed little monster that you give a coin to and which is supposed to improve your financial situation. Forget the coin, however, and you can end up losing everything.

  2. Easter eggs are big in the Ukraine and you’ll find plenty of pysanky if you visit this country. They’re coloured with geometric shapes and have different meanings depending on the design, some signifying prosperity, others fertility.

  3. Worry dolls are popular in many cultures but particularly in Guatemala where they are made by hand and given to children who are a little unhappy. The kids then tell the doll all their problems and these are supposed to magically disappear.

  4. The scarab beetle became popular around the world when they were seen in the film The Mummy, perhaps not for the right reasons though. In fact, these beetles are considered to be a lucky symbol in Egypt and protect wearers from malign forces.

  5. In Norway, the simple acorn seems to have a lot of power for its size. Farmers used to put a single acorn on their window sill to protect them from lightening when a storm was getting near. People still put an acorn in the window today as it’s seen as a way of providing general protection for the home.

  6. If you thought fish scales have no use, think again. Across many areas of central Europe, if you put a few in your wallet after your Christmas Eve meal, a celebration that normally involves carp, it can help bring you good luck for the rest of the year.

Charms are wonderful things and tell us a lot about cultures around the world. If you want to attract some luck, then take a look at the whole infographic here.

Cycle Through Cinema Scenery

he late actress Anita Eckberg buffed up Rome’s allure while splashing in the Trevi Fountain in the 1960 film La Dolce Vita. Scores of movies today have cemented plots in locales that, like the fountain, intersect with planned vacation itineraries offered by leading tour operators.

One trend-setting company, Freewheel Holidays, specializing in self-guided bicycle vacations throughout Europe, offers the chance to visit cinema locations on several of its 2018 itineraries. Included in program rates are lodging with breakfasts, detailed route notes, point-to-point luggage transfers and complimentary bike rentals.

Movie buffs or anyone with a love of history and adventure will enjoy these bike tours:

Austria’s Lake Constance welcomed the crew filming Quantum of Solace. Cyclists can visit the strikingly modern opera house (Festspielhaus Bregenz) where the nefarious Quantum organization meet up during a performance of Tosca.  Lake Constance Family Special is a 7-day journey that wanders through vineyards and Baroque villages, and by castles and Roman ruins, with suggested stops at the Zeppelin Museum to view a model of the famous Hindenburg airship.  The per person double rate is from £569. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/lake-constance-family-cycling-tour.

Italy’s Venice was the site for The Talented Mr. Ripley. On any of Freewheel Holidays’ itineraries of Venice, guests can stop for an espresso at the old café in Piazza San Marco, a meeting place for Ripley (Matt Damon), Marg (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Mr. Greenleaf (James Rebhorn). Tours range from five to eight days. Venice Round Tour is one example. Days 1, 2 and 7 focus on Venice. Other days are spent exploring the foothills of the Italian Alps near Vicenza to Bassano del Grappa to Treviso, enroute sampling trademark grappas and proseccos and Italian village life beyond La Serenissima. The per person double rate is £619 and includes bike rentals. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/venice-round-tour-7-nights.

Belgium’s Bruges is a treasure trove for cyclists who watched In Bruges. They can visit where the hitmen hole up, Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce Hotel, and brave, like Ken (Brendan Gleeson), the 366 narrow steps of the Belfry. They can meet for a beer as the main characters did at 1 Zwart Huis (the Black House) and gaze, as did guilt-stricken Ray (Colin Farrell), at the Hieronymus Bosch painting of The Last Judgment at the Groeninge Museum and dine at Cafedraal where Ray enjoys his first date with the cheerfully drug-dealing Chloe (Clémence Poésy), before punching out the lights of a Canadian couple. They might even linger, as Ray and Chloe did, on the Meestraat Bridge, between Vismarkt (Fishmarket) and the Groenerel. Bruges and Belgian Coast is a 7-day itinerary that targets families with easy cycling routes and child-friendly attractions. Rates are from £469 per person double. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/bruges-and-belgian-coast-6-nights.

Czech Republic’s Prague can be visited through the lens of Mission Impossible. As the mission falls apart, controller Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) falls into the Vltava River from the famous Charles Bridge; the art deco headquarters of villain Max (Vanessa Redgrave) is the Hotel Europa on Wenceslas Square. Prague to Vienna is a 9-day holiday linking these cultural capitals with lakes, forests, vineyards, the old Iron Curtain and historic towns of south Bohemia and Moravia, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The per person double rate is from £949. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/prague-to-vienna-self-guided-cycling-holiday.

Another itinerary in this region utilizes the Elbe (River) cycling path between Prague and Dresden. Enroute to Dresden’s Zwinger Palace, Semperoper (Opera House) and Frauenkirche is Theresienstadt, a World War II concentration camp. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/prague-to-dresden-cycling-holiday.

UK’s Oxfordshire made an indelible impression in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) learns to waltz at Divinity School, Bodleian Library, Oxford.  He recovers here after being poisoned in Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince. In Duke Humfrey’s Library in the Bodleian Library, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Hermione (Emma Watson) mull over who to take to Slughorn’s Christmas party. Oxford & The Cotswolds is a 7-day program offering glimpses of England’s finest stately home, Blenheim Palace, and quiet villages that seem removed from the 21st century. The per person double rate is £599. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/oxford-amp-the-cotswolds.

Dresden’s Ice World

Dresden’s Eiswelt (Ice World) Adds a New and Festive

Dimension to the Saxon City’s Christmas Appeal

In the eastern German state of Saxony, the Christmas markets are famous for their parades, Stollen, wooden nutcrackers, spinning pyramids and beautiful handcrafted goods. Dresden is one of the oldest markets in Germany known especially for its Stollen. Now this beautiful city has added a new winter attraction: the Dresden Eiswelt, or Ice World, where singular sculptures are worth a visit.

Saxony’s state capital of Dresden is admired for its beautiful architecture and extraordinary music and museums. Known as the Florence on the Elbe, every year tourists come to the city to visit the beautiful winding streets and alleyways, the re-creation of its grand buildings, including the Semper Opera, the Church of Our Lady, the royal castle and the Zwinger museums among many others. Ending a year of new things, the Dresden Eiswelt is a sparkling new winter attraction, and yet another reason to visit this beautiful city during the pre-Christmas season.

Located in a former factory near the Dresden Military History Museum, the Dresden Eiswelt is open to February 25, 2018. Sculptures adorn a large exhibition hall in a former factory and include 15 extraordinary figures from fairy tales and Christmas stories, such as the woman Holle, Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, the Grinch, the Blue Wonder (Dresden’s most famous bridge), the Church of Our Lady, a bobsleigh and the Prince and the Mouse King from The Nutcracker among many others. There is food and warm drinks for sale and a visit to the Dresden Military History Museum with the redesigned armory by Daniel Liebeskind is definitely worth an extra bit of time.

This year Dresden is celebrating its 583rd Striezelmarkt in the Altmarkt. Over 230 festive booths, the scent of mulled wine and roasting almonds create a beautiful Christmas scene from November 29 to December 24. A German Christmas specialty is the Stollen, and the Dresdner Christstollen, known to locals as ‘Striezel,’ is the most famous. In 1491, Pope Innocent VIII revoked the ban on butter and sent Dresden the ‘Butterbrief,’ or Butter Letter, that allowed the bakers to use richer ingredients, creating the Stollen we know today.  The ‘Striezel’ or Dresden

Christstollen is so beloved in Dresden that they linked it to the Christmas market, where the Striezel was first sold around 1500. In 1730, Augustus the Strong, one of Saxony’s most famous electoral princes and biggest Stollen enthusiasts asked Dresden’s bakers to create a giant Stollen.  It took 100 bakers and their assistants to create a Stollen that weighed 1.8 tons. This year, the Stollen is said to be four tons and a group of people will carry it to the Christmas market where it will be cut in pieces and served to everyone.

Christmas in Dresden is a true delight as there are many holiday activities, including further Christmas markets, and musical performances in addition to shopping and sightseeing. The Dresden Philharmonic will give three concerts on the 24, 25 and 26 of December in the new concert hall at the Kulturpalast; Bach’s Oratorio and many other concerts will be performed by various choirs at the Church of Our Lady (the Frauenkirche), the Church of the Holy Cross (Kreuzkirche), and the Dresden Zwinger. To round out a perfect day, visitors like to ice skate on the seasonal rink in the yard of the Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden, the city’s premier hotel, located in the former crown prince’s palace. Christmas in Dresden is fit for kings after all!
