Jamie N Commons

British singer/songwriter Jamie N Commons releases a new song today.  “Start Again” was written by Commons and Sam de Jong and produced by Sam de Jong and is available now at all digital retailers. Commons will perform a headline show at New York City’s Mercury Lounge on July 25th before heading out on a five-city trek supporting Kodaline. Tickets are on sale now at www.jamiencommons.com. Commons recently partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and advertising agency M/H VCCP for Runaway Train 25, a cross-industry initiative to reinvent the search for missing children in the U.S.  In the 1990s, the original “Runaway Train” video by Soul Asylum, NCMEC and director Tony Kaye featured 36 missing kids. After it aired on MTV, 21 of those missing kids were recovered. Commons, along with Skylar Grey and Gallant, recorded a new version of the award-winning song and shot a new video for the track. The KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records artist released the video for his current single “Won’t Let Go” last month and is working on his first full length album which will be released later this year.   “Start Again,” and “Won’t Let Go” follows the release of “Paper Dreams” which came out last November. This new music showcases a new direction for the musician that is heavily influenced by 80s pop.  Still evident is Commons’ bluesy-rock sensibility,  as showcased in his previous  releases “Rumble And Sway” and “Lead Me Home”, with a hint of what’s to come.  

Born in Bristol in the late 80s and following that with a stint in Chicago, Commons returned to England set on a music career studying at Goldsmiths in London, notorious for its host of luminary alumni.  Commons released The Baron EP in 2011 followed by his KIDinaKORNER/Interscope debut Rumble And Sway EP in 2013 showcasing his whiskey-laced growl.  Commons’ workmanlike approach has been fed further by the work he’s doing for others. Among his successes, he co-wrote the hit “Jungle” for X Ambassadors with Alex Da Kid and Sam Harris, and toured with the band. He also had a Beats by Dre ad, and was featured on Eminem’s ‘MMLP2’ album. Commons won Music Week’s Sync Artist Of The Year in 2016. This past year Commons composed the music for the summer blockbuster “Skyscraper” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Greg Palast in Mexico Wins Top Journalism Award

Greg Palast in Mexico is Star Attraction, Wins Top Journalism Award

As 2015 Nobel Peace Prize nominee and multiple award winning journalist Daniel Estulin (who introduced Greg Palast at Mexico’s prestigious award show recently wrote about the event: “ Surrounde4d by journalist celebrities from all over the world, Palast along with the absent Julian Assange was the star attraction. He is admired and respected by so many attendees for his fearless reporting against the deep state he so courageously expose. ”

The Association of Mexican Journalists has awarded Greg Palast their 2019 prize for International Reporter for his exposés on the theft of elections from Georgia to Mexico and his reporting from Venezuela.

Recipients are chosen each year by a panel from throughout Latin America. Palast was presented the award at a ceremony held at the organization’s headquarters in Mexico City on Friday, June 7. The ceremony was covered live by the nation’s television outlets, expecting the President of Mexico to appear to present the award. But President Andreas Manuel Lopez Obrador (universally called AMLO) was in the difficult last minutes of negotiating the agreement that backed down U.S. President Donald Trump from his threat to impose tariffs that could have crushed the economies of both nations.

In a nod to the tense moment, the biggest applause from the audience of Latin America’s top journalists came when Palast said, “Most of us in the U.S. oppose the latest Trump tariff tantrum.”

Palast also acknowledged his fellow award recipient, Julian Assange, now imprisoned in Britain, facing extradition to the U.S.

“Assange is in prison today for the sole crime of letting Americans know the truth about their own government and the deadly crimes of our leaders.”

Palast tried to explain the problems that result from America’s press, which is weaker and more submissive to the viewpoint of the moneyed class than the Latin press.

“If my fellow Americans seem as ignorant and crazy as chihuahuas, foolishly electing people like George Bush and Donald Trump, forgive them, because my countrymen don’t get the truth through their news, only exposure to a torrent of cheap propaganda.”

The third international prize went to Argentine Stella Colloni for a lifetime of investigative scoops, including risking her life to expose “Operation Condor,” the CIA’s program to assassinate Left officials in Chile and throughout Latin America. [Photo at right with Palast.]

Palast concluded by recognizing the astonishing courage of Mexico’s reporters. “I am honored to accept this award — from a courageous nation of journalists far more courageous than me, who have given their lives to report the news. My esteemed fellow reporters,

If my fellow Americans seem as ignorant and crazy as chihuahuas, foolishly electing people like George Bush and Donald Trump, forgive them, because my countrymen don’t get the truth through their news, only exposure to a torrent of cheap propaganda.

But let me defend my countrymen.

Americans never elected George Bush. In 2000, I discovered how Bush stole the election in Florida. My story for BBC, The British Broadcasting Corporation, was published all over the world — except in my own nation.

And later, in 2006, they stole another election. Here, in Mexico.

I directed an investigation for The Guardian of England that proved, without any doubt, that AMLO [now President Lopez Obrador] had won. That story was completely disappeared from the media in my country.

Don’t blame Americans. They really believe Donald Trump was elected President.

Let me tell you today that that did not happen

Before the 2016 elections, Trump’s political agents eliminated 1,100,000 Black and Hispanic citizens from the voter rolls. If it were not for the purge of these voters and the disappearance of their ballots, Trump would not be President.

I reported this discovery for Al Jazeera and in Rolling Stone magazine, but the U.S. television news kept Americans in the dark.

I’ve brought some copies of my film, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, which has subtitles in Spanish, which explains how Trump stole the election and how he can steal the next one in 2020. I do this to protect my countrymen from being blamed for electing this spoiled, rich, fanatic, orange-stained baby.

And permit me to add, most of us in the USA oppose the latest Trump tariff tantrum.

Today, as I accept this honor, I am sadly aware of the absence of my fellow journalist, Julian Assange.

Assange is in prison today for the sole crime of letting Americans know the truth about their own government and the deadly crimes of our leaders.

I am honored to accept this award — from a courageous nation of journalists far more courageous than me, who have given their lives to report the news. All I can do is commit to honor your award by continuing to fight to uncover the truth, whether in Caracas or Mexico or Washington.

New Soccer Program

Special Olympics New York and Downtown United Soccer Club (DUSC) have partnered to launch a new soccer program for children with intellectual disabilities. The program is a free 8-week program designed for ages 12-21. It will introduce participants to basic soccer skills like dribbling, passing and goal shooting. The program which is open to the community, offers an opportunity to share in the joy of soccer and being part of a team.

In preparation for Downtown United Soccer Club’s Fall Season, registration for this program is now open. To register, click here. If you do not have an account with Sports Sign Up, you will be asked to create one prior to registration.

Media are invited to attend an official kick-off Saturday, September 7th at 8:30AM at Chelsea Park, located at West 27th Street & 9th Ave, New York, NY. The soccer program will immediately follow at 9AM.

New athletes will meet every Saturday beginning September 7th and run through November 9th at Chelsea Park. The program will foster motor skills development, as well as cognitive and social skill development through participation in age-appropriate and fun activities. DUSC staff and volunteers will work one-on-one and in groups with children rotating through various activity stations.

“We believe that all people, no matter their ability, deserve the opportunity to grow as individuals through programs like the one being offered by Downtown United Soccer Club,” said Special Olympics New York President and CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “Thank you Downtown United Soccer Club for partnering with us to champion this new soccer program and making a lasting difference in the lives of these athletes.”

Wienerschnitzel Takes on AAF’s National Student Advertising Competition

Wienerschnitzel and the American Advertising Federation (AAF) are pleased to announce that Ithaca College is the winner of the AAF’s 2019 National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). As the official corporate sponsor/client of the competition, Wienerschnitzel provided a “real-world” marketing challenge to over 2,000 advertising and marketing college students nationwide.

Wienerschnitzel challenged the teams to elevate consumer perception, and encourage them to understand the truths about the misconceptions surrounding one of America’s favorite foods: the hot dog. By changing the perception of the hot dog, with Wienerschnitzel leading the charge, it would have a great benefit to the hot dog industry as well as to its business.  

“We were very excited to sponsor this competition, and view the incredible talent and creativity of all participants,” said Wienerschnitzel Chief Marketing Officer Doug Koegeboehn. “Congratulations to the Ithaca College team, which created an outstanding campaign that we look forward to utilizing in our marketing. They clearly understood that consumers have false information on the quality of hot dogs and did a great job communicating that hot dogs are actually made with great cuts of meat, just like any other sandwich you would buy at your favorite deli. At Wienerschnitzel, we were thrilled to utilize our partnership with AAF to be a part of this important competition.”

The Wienerschnitzel challenge was the first of its kind in the NSAC’s 46-year history. “Previous sponsors have tasked teams to provide a solution that focused on their brand’s product or service,” explained AAF Chief Operating Officer Constance Cannon Frazier. “The fact that Wienerschnitzel’s marketing challenge would benefit the entire hot dog industry was extremely exciting to the teams and speaks volumes about the brand.”

Wienerschnitzel, the world’s largest hot dog chain, serves more than 120 million hot dogs annually. Fueled by a mission of “Serving Food to Serve Others,” the company also gives a percentage of its profits back to its charitable partners.

The final leg of the NSAC competition was at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida June 6–7, in conjunction with ADMERICA, AAF’s national conference. Only the top eight teams which qualified from AAF districts and semi-finals competed in the finals. The second place award went to Liberty University, and the third place award to Syracuse University. Other finalists included Columbia College Chicago, Johnson & Wales University Providence, South Dakota State University, Southern Methodist University, and University of Alabama. 

J.J. Abrams and Henry Abrams Make Their Marvel Comics Debut With SPIDER-MAN #1

The secret is out! This September, legendary filmmaker J.J. Abrams (Star Wars, Star Trek, Super 8) and his son Henry Abrams will co-write SPIDER-MAN, a five-issue limited series years in the making, with art by the incredible Sara Pichelli (Miles Morales, Guardians Of The Galaxy) and cover art by the amazing Olivier Coipel!

Speaking to The New York Times, J.J. teased, “The story shows Peter Parker in a way you haven’t seen him before.”

“Spider-Man is one of those super heroes where the more you read about him, for me at least, the less I understand him,” added Henry. “He’s so anti-everything that you’d expect from a hero. I think Stan Lee said something about putting the human in superhuman. That is what we’re trying to do.”

Together, the father-son duo will introduce fans to a mysterious new villain named Cadaverous – whose identity remains to be seen…but what do they have planned for Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson?!

The Bud Light Dive Bar Tour 2019 is continuing with it’s third stop of the year. On Wednesday, June 26th The Bud Light Dive Bar Tour is stopping in San Francisco with FLETCHER putting on an intimate performance for Pride.

This night is especially exciting for us as we are partnering with GLAAD to put on a special show together, to further celebrate Pride month. The evening will feature our special-edition Pride bottle, which donates $1 for every case sold to GLAAD, to assist in their efforts of creating a world where everyone can live the life they love. Additionally, Bud Light kindly requests guests to contribute to the efforts by making a small donation of $15 that will 100% go back to GLAAD and their ongoing efforts.

US-based Spanish chef and humanitarian José Andrés has been awarded the American Express Icon Award 2019. This prestigious honor is part of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and celebrates an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the restaurant industry worthy of international recognition and who has used the platform that his profile as a chef provides to raise awareness and drive change.

Chef Andrés will officially receive his award at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 ceremony, heldat Sands Theatre within the iconic Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on the evening of Tuesday 25th June. The award reflects his overall career as a pioneering chef and restaurateur as well as his more recent humanitarian work, both of which have brought him to the status of a global culinary icon.

There is a strong female presence this year, most notably with an exciting new entry from Core by Clare Smyth in London (No.66), the restaurant led by the winner of The World’s Best Female Chef Award 2018. Other female-led restaurants include Elena Arzak’s Arzak in San Sebastian, Spain (No.53), Pim Techamuanvivit’s Nahm in Bangkok, Thailand (No.69), Helena Rizzo’s Maní in São Paulo, Brazil (No.73),Garima Arora’s Gaa in Bangkok, Thailand (No.95) and Anne-Sophie Pic’s eponymous restaurant in Valence, France (No.98).

50/50 Split
As a result of the gender-balanced voting Academy announced in early 2019, more than 500 female experts, chefs, food writers and restaurateurs, make up 50% of the total voting Academy, establishing equal representation within the group of 1,000-plus international restaurant industry experts.

Widening the net
Some less celebrated gastronomic locations now appear on the 51-120 list, including the Marche region in Italy with Uliassi (No.61); southern Spain’s Aponiente (No.94) in El Puerto de Santa Maria; Guadalajara in Mexico with Alcalde (No.109); Ghent in Belgium with Chambre Séparée (No.111); and the Dolomites in Italy with St. Hubertus (No.116).

In a collection of restaurants marked by their geographic spread, 21 new entries appear on this year’s 51-120 list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, marking a notable increase of represented countries and cities compared to previous years. There are three new entries apiece for Japan, Italy and China (including two from Hong Kong and one from Macau). Russia sees two new entries, both from St. Petersburg, challenging what has previously been Moscow’s domination. Lido 84 on Lake Garda, Italy (No.78) – this year’s winner of the Miele One To Watch Award – is another significant newcomer to the list, alongside Uliassi, which is the highest new entry in the 51-120 list.

Berlin’s Nobelhart & Schmutzig, last year’s No.88, has climbed the ranking an impressive 31 places to No.57, followed by Indian Accent in New Delhi, which advanced 30 places from last year to No.60.

SingleThread of Healdsburg, USA, last year’s Miele One To Watch winner, continues to demonstrate its predicted progress to No.71, jumping 21 places. Other notable climbers include Rio de Janeiro’s Lasai,bumping up 26 places to No.74, and Diverxo of Madrid landing at No.75 from No.96.
USA boasts an impressive seven restaurants on the 51-120 list, with Atomix, New York, debuting at No.119. Spain and Japan closely follow with six restaurants each, and Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and the UK are each represented by four restaurants.

The Voting Process
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 list is voted for by more than 1,000 international restaurant industry experts and well-travelled gourmets who make up The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy. The gender- balanced Academy comprises 26 separate regions around the world, each of which has 40 members including a chairperson. No sponsor from the event has any influence over the voting process. Professional services consultancy, Deloitte, independently adjudicates the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. This adjudication ensures that the integrity and authenticity of the voting process and the resulting list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 are protected.
