Eight Smart Winter Skin Care Tips

La Niña caused harsh winter conditions last year, and people worldwide experienced colder temperatures and more snowfall. They also recognized changes in their appearance during the winter months as the cold affected their skin.

Various weather shifts wreak havoc on your skin. Some people notice an increase in cracking and flaking in the winter, while others experience an overproduction of oil. You can manage these changes by recognizing the weather alterations and adjusting your routine.

What Happens to Your Skin in the Winter?

One of the leading causes of skin changes in the winter is low humidity levels. They decrease during the colder months because cool air holds less moisture. People also use their heating units in the winter, which burn indoor water vapors.

Some people engage in outdoor winter sports that increase their susceptibility to skin damage. Skiing, ice skating and other activities expose them to wind, snow and sun rays. 

When it is cold outside, many people believe sunscreen is unnecessary because of the low ultraviolet (UV) index. However, UV rays can penetrate the atmosphere and cause sunburns even in winter. High winds may also cause dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, cracking and other adverse effects. You can reduce these issues by practicing an efficient winter skin care routine.

The Importance of Skin Care

Proper skin care routines have various benefits. You shed dead skin cells throughout the day, which causes irritation without effective prevention techniques. When you remove impurities and moisturize your subsurface layers of skin, you may prevent wrinkles, acne and other adverse reactions.

The harsh effects of winter weather can also cause permanent skin damage. Keeping an efficient skin care routine can prevent harm, and prevention is easier than correction. Maintaining clear skin additionally enhances your self-esteem, which can improve your mental health.

Skin care is also important because your skin is your body’s largest organ. When you take care of your skin, you support your general health and well-being. 

There are eight ways to improve your skin care routine this winter and protect it from the elements.

1. Continue Using SPF

One of the most effective ways to protect your skin in the winter is by using a moisturizer with a sun protection factor (SPF). The product can also protect your skin from indoor lighting, which causes adverse effects over time. You should use daily serums and creams with at least 30 SPF for optimal benefits.  

You may also benefit from using a moisturizer with retinol. The ingredient is a form of vitamin A that promotes new skin growth. It also acts as an exfoliant to remove dead skin and nourish the new layer.

2. Turn Down The Heat

You can maintain clear and healthy skin in the winter by turning down the hot water in the shower and bath. High levels of heat cause inflammation, peeling and itching, similar to a sunburn. Hot water also interferes with your natural moisture balance.

The heat can strip your skin of the natural oils, proteins and fats that generally protect the organ. It also makes your skin overproduce oil to compensate for the dryness, causing acne and other unpleasant effects. Take lukewarm showers and baths to protect your skin in the winter, warming up with blankets and layers after getting out.

3. Stay Hydrated

You may engage in fewer physical activities during the winter because of weather-related limitations. You generally consume less water when you don’t sweat as much. Dehydration can cause dry skin and increase the appearance of aging.

Minimize the adverse effects of dehydration by consuming roughly 2.25 liters of tap or mineral water each day. You may also switch out coffee for green tea to improve hydration and your antioxidant intake. Straying away from dehydrating products and consumption patterns can effectively improve your skin.

4. Use Moisturizing Hand Soap

Another factor influencing poor skin in the winter is handwashing. The transmission rates of the flu and colds increase in the colder months, and it’s a good idea to protect yourself by washing hands frequently.

However, overwashing your hands can strip your skin of its natural oils and moisture. You can protect your skin from dryness by using moisturizing soaps. You can also apply lotion directly after washing and place a balm on chapped areas.

5. Hydrate in the Bath

You can also protect their skin in the colder months by taking baths. Submerging your skin for extended periods may improve hydration levels. Baths also decrease cortisol levels, which is a hormone that damages the skin.

You may add bath oil to the water before getting in to decrease eczema symptoms. It is also important to moisturize afterward to improve your skin’s moisture retention.   

6. Decrease Your Alcohol Intake

Alcohol also adversely affects your skin. Cocktails, wine and beer cause inflammation in the body that interferes with the skin’s natural equilibrium. Alcoholic beverages can worsen the effects of eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.

Excessive drinking also causes dehydration. Protect your skin by limiting your weekly beverage consumption. You can also drink more water when consuming alcohol to minimize the effects.

7. Exfoliate

Exfoliating in the winter can help prevent acne and give you a head-to-toe glow. Removing dead skin prevents clogged pores and stimulates cell regrowth. It’s a good idea to apply a moisturizer after washing away the dead skin to protect the new layer.

You can exfoliate with a washcloth or a beaded body wash if you have sensitive skin. Those with tougher skin can use a dry brush to remove the top flakey layer. You should also remain mindful of your daily routine and tendencies that cause dryness to protect your skin.

8. Prevent Lick Eczema

You may try to moisturize your lips by licking them. However, saliva can exacerbate dryness and cause cracking and chapped skin. The skin on your lips is more sensitive than other areas of your body, making protection essential.

Keep your lips moist in the winter with ointments and balms. You should also restrict your consumption of acidic foods and beverages to minimize licking and dryness. Also, be sure to cover your lips with a scarf or mask when skiing or dealing with high winds.

When Is the Best Time to Start a Winter Skin Care Routine?

You should adjust your skin care routine in the fall and explore any reactions. Test different products by using samples before investing in a new set of moisturizers and soaps. It is essential to remain aware of slight changes in your skin throughout the seasons for optimal protection and to keep that healthy glow all year.

Lilian Jackman Offers Gardening Advice in Dr. Hauschka Livestream

There are many reasons to garden, but sometimes it can be so hard to keep your plants alive. They’ll often die before you can enjoy your harvest. Dr. Hauschka, a skincare brand, recently did a livestream with gardener Lilian Jackman, founder and owner of Wilder Hill Gardens, in Conway, Massachusetts. She gave the following advice:

Don’t Overwater

One of the easiest ways to kill plants is to overwater them. People tend to think that their herbs and vegetables need as much water as they can get but that’s not true. Plants, like other creatures, have a limit to how much water they need. Jackman recommended only watering when the ground is dry. That way, you know they’re getting the perfect amount of water they need without getting too much. 

Bring Plants Inside for the Winter

It’s important to bring some plants inside for winter, as they will be able to stay alive in the proper conditions. She encourages people to keep plants in pots for easy transport during the winter. She also recommended getting full-spectrum UV bulbs, as they will help to give plants the light they need, and will also be visually appealing. As far as what plants should go inside, you have to know which environment they came from. She uses the example of rosemary: a Mediterranean plant. Because rosemary is Mediterranean, you should store it in an environment most similar to that environment – which for her, in Massachusetts, meant indoors. 

Think Like a Plant

Plants will communicate a lot with you, if you can understand them. If you’re giving plants too much water, they will droop. Observing the “behavior” of your plants can go a long way in determining how successful your garden will be. 

Add Diversity

Jackman recommends using three to four plants per pot – each of different sizes, styles, and characteristics. Different plants require different nutrients, and with more plant variety, more nutrients will be utilized. Also, variety makes your pot or planter more visually stimulating.  

Enjoy the Fruit of your Labor

One thing Jackman really stressed was utilizing the plants in your diet. If you have vegetables, pick and enjoy them. If you have herbs, use them in your food. It’s important to appreciate every aspect of the gardening process, especially the end results.

Beautyque NYC Releases Beauty Routine Survey Results

Beautyque NYC, a virtual shopping, beauty and wellness experience, unveiled its consumer survey results assessing “Beauty Consumer Trends: Has the Pandemic Changed Beauty Routines?” One of the largest results stemming from the survey is that nearly 75% of respondents indicated they have changed their beauty routines since the pandemic started.

Beautyque NYC Founder & Owner Sonia Khemiri explains why these trends have occurred: “For most of us, many aspects of our lives have changed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as of March 2020. As a result, we’ve had to adapt our routines, habits, and lifestyles to fit the ‘new normal.’” She continues “Interested in seeing how consumers’ beauty habits have changed nowadays, Beautyque NYC developed a survey for consumers. We wanted to know, are they wearing more or less makeup than before? Do they purchase skincare more or less often? What are they looking for in the brands they support?”

Before the Pandemic

Before the pandemic, respondents said they bought their beauty products in retailers such as, Sephora/Ulta and Drug Stores (71.3%), from Amazon (43.9%), or directly from the brand’s website (45.2%).  Among the various Beauty categories, skincare, body care, hair care, and makeup were all used daily. Nail care and fragrances were often used. Lastly, tools & devices were reported to be sometimes used. They often purchased skincare, haircare, body care, and makeup, and sometimes bought fragrance, tools & devices, and nail care products.

During the Pandemic

Nearly 40 percent of the respondents indicated that their beauty routines have definitely changed as a result of the pandemic, while 36.8% answered that their routine has only somewhat changed, and 17.3% answered that their beauty routine has not changed.

Their place of preference for making the purchase is Amazon, Sephora/Ulta, and directly on the brand’s website.  Skincare and body care products are used daily, hair care is used often, and nail care, fragrance, tools and devices are all used sometimes.  Most of the products are purchased sometimes; however, none of them are purchased daily.

On average, 59% of respondents claimed to use makeup less often since the pandemic, and 30% uses makeup the same amount as before the pandemic.  In relation to skincare, nearly 50% of survey respondents use the same amount of time as before and just over 40% use skincare more often now. Fragrance and nail care items are used less often than before. Hair care, body care, tools and devices are all used for the same amount of time as before the pandemic.

About Makeup

Makeup consumers tend to buy products for a variety of aesthetic reasons.  The most used makeup products used on a daily basis as reported by survey respondents include mascara, eyeshadow, lip gloss, foundation, and concealer. Beautyque found that the largest percentage of survey responders, 72%, answered they wear it since it gives them a confidence boost. The second largest percentage of repsonders, 65.3%, said makeup makes them feel more beautiful. Finally, 55% of responders reported that they wear makeup to hide imperfections.“The vast majority of consumers use makeup as a means of improving their overall self-esteem and perception,” Sonia adds.

About Skincare

The most used makeup products used on a daily basis were reported to be cleanser/face wash, moisturizer, eye cream and serum. “These products are the foundation to a consistent skincare routine,” Sonia says.

About Purchase Criteria

Beautyque’s survey also assessed important factors when deciding whether or not to purchase a beauty product. Respondents reported the criteria most important in making the decision to purchase included the product having clean ingredients,  good reviews, and a reasonable price point.

“In terms of the brands our survey respondents support and purchase from: the price has to be reasonable, the product has to be cruelty-free, consist of high-performance formulas, made from clean and natural ingredients, and offer an inclusive shade range,” Sonia says. “Social media platforms, friends and family, and influencers are the top resources the respondents use to gain information on beauty trends along with researching beauty products online before making a purchase.”

Factors that affect their level of trust in a brand are knowing the brand’s founders’ story, hearing influencers mention it, and a well-known brand, Sonia adds. “Trust is derived from the brand’s reputation as a direct reflection of the products.”

These are definitely times of change for the beauty industry. “It is pertinent to keep an open eye on consumers’ behaviors and preferences,” Sonia advises. “Beautyque NYC strives to help indie brands reach their maximum potential and to deliver the best products to consumers.”

Here at 360 Magazine, we spoke with Beautyque NYC Founder & Owner Sonia Khemiri about how Beautyque’s survey was conducted, future beauty industry trend predictions, and her best product recommendations for day and night skin routines:

How did you conduct your consumer survey?

The survey was conducted virtually through a detailed online form that we distributed to our subscriber base of beauty enthusiasts and consumers. We asked them questions regarding beauty trends at various times to see what has changed over the course of the pandemic.

How large of a study did you conduct? How many people were surveyed overall?

The study consisted of 231 responses*.

*From a total of 231 responses, 98.3% of 229 were females. The breakdown of age groups goes as follows: 35 to 44 years old (26.1%), 45 to 54 years old (23%), and 24 to 34 years old (20.8%).  The annual income of the groups starts with 47.3% of respondents having an income of $50,000 or less, 34.1% with an income of $50,000 to $99,000, and 15.9% with an income of $100,000 to $249,000.  The respondents were primarily from New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania.

What do you predict is the largest factor in beauty routine changes during the pandemic?

Based on the survey conducted, the largest factor that changed during the pandemic was how [many] more consumers developed a greater sense of awareness toward beauty and wellness products. Areas that consumers expressed their concern were on clean ingredients, sustainability, ease of application, and effectiveness. Additionally, their preference on where they buy their beauty routine products has changed significantly from retailers to online shopping.

As the pandemic begins to less across the US, do you predict these changes to be long-term or temporary?

We believe that some habits will definitely stick around even after the pandemic, such as at-home routines and buying online. The pandemic forced individuals to color their own hair, do their own nails, and perform their own facials. This change is predicted to be long-term due to convenience and cost-effectiveness. Online shopping allows consumers to perform more research on their products and grant them a greater access to new products that fit their needs, especially with all the digital development explosion during the pandemic such as VR, AR and AI. Even though brick-and-mortar stores are reopening across the U.S, we believe the shopping experience and the beauty routines built during the pandemic will be mixed in a way or another with offline experience and shopping.

What brands would you recommend to someone looking to start a beauty routine with high quality, cruelty-free products?

All the brands we have all carry high-quality products, but we will further elaborate on the cruelty-free brands.

For a night routine: we would always recommend to double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser and a water-based cleanser to remove all unwanted residue.
