MADD Awards Gary Peters

Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) recognized U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) with its “Legislative Hero” award for his commitment to eliminating drunk driving with automotive safety technology. The award was presented to Senator Peters by Rana Abbas Taylor and her husband, Tom Taylor, of Northville, Michigan. Rana’s only sister Rima (38), brother-in-law Issam (42), and their three children, Ali (13), Isabella (12) and Giselle (7), were killed by a wrong-way drunk driver in 2019.

MADD’s Legislative Hero award honors Senator Peters, chair of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, for his bold leadership in advancing the drunk driving prevention technology rulemaking provision in the recently enacted Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The vehicle safety standard resulting from this rulemaking will save more than 9,400 lives a year, according to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and will ultimately lead to the end of drunk driving.

Ever since their tragic loss, Rana and Tom have fiercely advocated for drunk driving prevention technology alongside Senator Peters. Rana testified in support of the auto safety legislation before Senator Peters’ subcommittee hearing on “Driving Innovation: the Future of Automotive Mobility, Safety, and Technology” in April 2021.

“Senator Peters was a vital cosponsor of the RIDE Act in the Senate, and his steadfast leadership and support for the drunk driving prevention technology standard will help save thousands of lives,” said Rana Abbas Taylor. “My only sibling and her family would still be with us today if the drunk driver’s vehicle had been equipped with technology to stop him from operating it while impaired. Thanks to Senator Peters’ support for this standard, thousands of other families will be saved from my family’s horrible fate—and spared from the irreparable loss I’ve experienced.”

“I was proud to help pass bipartisan legislation into law to stop drunk driving and prevent heartbreaking tragedies on our roads,” said U.S. Senator Gary Peters, a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. “Nobody should be forced to feel the loss and grief Rana and the Abbas family have felt. Rana’s testimony before my Subcommittee last year on incorporating life-saving technologies into vehicles was incredibly powerful and vital—and I will keep working with my colleagues to improve safety.”

In the U.S., someone dies in a drunk driving crash every 52 minutes. Drunk driving crashes account for more than a quarter of U.S. traffic deaths. In 2019, DUI crashes killed more than 10,000 people and injured another 300,000. Alcohol-related deaths spiked by 9% in 2020 compared to 2019, even as vehicle miles traveled dropped by more than 430 billion miles during the pandemic. And an estimated 20,160 people died on America’s roads in the first half of 2021, which was an 18.4% increase over the first half of 2019, largely due to speeding, impaired driving, and not wearing seatbelts.

The advanced technology provision in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which passed November 5, 2021, and was signed into law by President Biden on November 15, 2021, is the most significant lifesaving legislation in MADD’s 41-year history. The law directs the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a rulemaking process and set a final standard within three years for impaired driving safety equipment on all new vehicles. Automakers are then given two to three years to implement the safety standard.

New cars equipped with the NHTSA-directed technology could start rolling off the assembly line as soon as 2026 or 2027, if NHTSA adheres to the statutory timeline required by the law. NHTSA will evaluate technologies that may include:

  • Driving performance monitoring systems that monitor the vehicle movement with systems like lane departure warning and attention assist
  • Driver monitoring systems that monitor the driver’s head and eyes, typically using a camera or other sensors
  • Alcohol detection systems that use sensors to determine whether a driver is drunk and then prevent the vehicle from moving

“MADD has called on Transportation Secretary Buttigieg and NHTSA to strictly adhere to the timeframe in the new law,” added Abbas Taylor. “Delaying the standard will needlessly result in thousands more preventable deaths and injuries from drunk driving.”

About Mothers Against Drunk Driving

MADD has helped to save more than 400,000 lives, reduce drunk driving deaths by more than 50 percent and promote designating a non-drinking driver. MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving® calls for law enforcement support, ignition interlocks for all offenders, and advanced vehicle technology.

Today, pre-owned watch sales make up about a third of the market in the watch industry – estimated to grow to 50% market sales by 2025. Retired timepieces, limited edition releases, and high demand due to popularity contribute to the appreciation of certain timepieces on the market today. Vetted brands like Rolex and Cartier may be your dream piece, but instead of scouring retailers, waiting on the supply-chain or spending years on a waitlist, your like-new timepiece could actually be obtainable this year by re-sale.

Addison Grace – “I Wanna Be A Boy”

Musician and TikTok phenomenon Addison Grace released their single, “I Wanna Be A Boy,” that discusses their own intimate tour with gender. Throughout writing the song and exploring what gender truly meant to them, Addison was able to discover their pronouns – he/they – and come out as nonbinary. Addison sings, “I guess I wanna be a boy,” coming full terms with this sincere and profound message.

Listen to “I Wanna Be A BoyHERE.

Addison pondered with never releasing the song past his own social media, but after posting it online and observing the feedback, he knew that it deserved an appropriate debut. While speaking with B Drop, Addison states, “I initially started writing it when I was questioning a lot of things about myself. I’m very open with how I identify online and I’ve always openly been a queer creator, queer musician, and at that time I was really not understanding how I identified with my gender and how I felt about it, and so it started off as a song about gender roles and how I was jealous of guys and how they got to have certain things I couldn’t have. With time, I realized it was very much me explaining — in song form — that I wasn’t a girl and that I was nonbinary instead.

“A lot of people ended up relating to the song. I had trans men relating to it saying “I’ve always felt like that.” I’ve had trans women being like “I used to deny I was a woman and I wanted to be a boy; I wanted to be “normal” — quote, unquote. I even had my friends who were born female and identify as female feel that way because they felt they were a tomboy and never fit in with the “girlie girls” so to speak.” He continues, “Even though, for me, it’s a song about gender identity and finding myself in that way, I think really at the core — it becomes a song about not understanding yourself and wishing so desperately that you could and it’s a very vulnerable song for that reason.”

The cover art for the piece showcases several images of Addison while they were growing up, at different time periods. He talks about this, saying, “I feel like a lot of my work recently has been about growing up and about those awkward moments in your life, so for this song, I wanted it to be a collage of my face growing up. I didn’t want it to be something someone had drawn. I wanted it to be realistic so I searched through a bunch of scrapbooks and I found pictures of two-year old me, 10-year old me, 15-year old me and a picture of me from last year and we ended up crafting it all together because I’ve always loved the idea of putting photos together and it makes something else. I wanted to put stickers and all that because when you’re finding yourself, it feels like these weird puzzle that don’t fit quite right, so I wanted it to look slightly off… I really love it and it feels really nostalgic to me.”

The journey of coming out as non-binary for Addison was a difficult road and is something that he aims to inspire others with. They strive to empower individuals with the power to live their own lives as genuinely as possible. Through sharing his own journey, Addison nurtures the idea that gender identity is a voyage that they went on and hope that others can embark on as well.
