CONISON: OUR CHAT WITH HIGH-END STREETWEAR LABEL FOUNDER, CONNOR MORTON

By Blake Holmes

A celebration of the LA dream, Conison is an up-and-coming, high-end streetwear brand from Melbourne, Australia.
Recently, we caught up with Founder and Creative Director, Connor Morton, to chat vision, inspiration and what’s in store for the year ahead.

TELL US ABOUT CONISON..

Conison is a high-end streetwear and design brand.

At the heart of Conison is a message of inspiration. I want to encourage people to express themselves, providing an avenue for them to explore their own sense of style and creative potential through fashion and design.

WHAT’S YOUR WHY?

I’ve always endeavoured to express my creativity through outlets available to me, from DJing and music, to clothing customisation and art. I think everyone deserves this opportunity and my dream is that Conison will provide that for others; an inspiration source that spreads positivity and reinforces the idea that everyone has the power to shape their reality.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR YOUR UPCOMING COLLECTION?

Collection 2 Rise & Fall is a two-part capsule. This collection celebrates an ascension to your highest self and the fall of negative energy. These ideas are expressed in my messaging and I’ve catered to both the NZ/Aus and US/Euro markets, with different materials and designs.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

There are countless brands and creators that fuel my fire. Designers like Reese Cooper and Heron Preston, brands like Riot Hill and photographers like Kyle Caulfield to name just a few.

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?

I believe motivation is something you have to seek constantly. This can be challenging at times and the interruptions of this year have been a prime example.

Regularly contacting my mentors, listening to podcasts, and painting have kept me in the zone this year. There’s always motivation to be found if you look hard enough.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

Every day is different but I start and end them in the same way. I usually wake up with a warm/cold soak to get focused, then have breakfast while watching motivational content on YouTube. From then I work ‘til i’ve felt i’ve done enough, which means late nights a lot of the time. I also work other jobs and fit in time at the gym or some form of exercise each day. I end the day with business content on YouTube to get inspired for the day ahead.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST FINANCIAL STRAIN WHEN RUNNING YOUR OWN BRAND?

Being a one-man band with no backing at 22 has been a struggle. There are definitely financial challenges and they’ve taken a lot of practice, help from mentors and learning to overcome. In saying that, I’m feeling confident in the belief that now is the time to be bold, take risks and bet on myself. When you believe in your brand and the message you’re trying to share, anything is possible.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

My mentor sent me a message a few weeks back. I think it’s spot on and something I struggle with at times. “Your art is not about how many people like your work, your art is about if your heart likes your work, if your soul likes your work, it’s how honest you are with yourself”. I try to follow this ethos daily and remind myself of this at times I’m questioning my vision and creative direction. I’ve implemented this into my work daily and it’s become more authentic as a result.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CONISON?

The sky’s the limit. I want to push creative boundaries, not just with Conison but in the global fashion and lifestyle brand space. This means everything from painting collections and exclusive pieces to furniture.
Most importantly, I want to continue telling the Conison story in an authentic way. Giving people a story to truly connect with is what drives me and the best way to keep people engaged and on-board for the journey.

I’m learning and growing every day and Conison will continue to evolve with me. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

LEAVE US WITH A FAVOURITE QUOTE..

I’ve got a few. ‘Ignore the boos, they usually come from the cheap seats’. This one has been really important to me. As a young person, you often face a lot of negativity and doubt from others about your ability to step outside the norm and succeed. I’ve learnt not to take this to heart and stay true to myself, which is something I think we should all strive to do.

Another favourite is, ‘an arrow can only be shot forward by pulling it backward’. This one’s all about resilience to me, and the idea that on the other side of struggle and hardship is success, fortune and prosperity. I try to remember this with every minor setback and keep a positive mindset no matter the circumstances. When you do, nothing can discourage you from achieving your dreams. This is what Conison is all about.

RUN DMC × 12on12 - limited edition vinyl

RUN DMC × 12on12 – limited edition vinyl

Following their acclaimed project with Travis Scott and fashion house Saint Laurent, 12on12 announced their latest collaboration with cultural icons and hip-hop legends RUN DMC.

The pioneering New York group have curated an exclusive limited edition 12″ vinyl-only compilation with bespoke artwork by rising LA artist Reena Tolentino, aka ‘RT’. 12on12 RUN DMC limited edition vinyl will be released on the 8th December by 12on12.

The 12on12 deluxe, double disc package is limited to 500 hand-numbered editions and embodies the story of RUN-DMC’s legacy within the handpicked iconic track-listing, featuring songs that inspired, affected and changed the ground-breaking group’s music.

The first release in celebration of the 35th anniversary of seminal 1986 album Raising Hell, RUN DMC pay tribute to their late bandmate Jam Master Jay and dedicate this project in his honour.

The release offers a fascinating insight into RUN DMC, one of the most influential groups of all time. Alongside tracks by early rap trailblazers The Sugarhill Gang and Afrika Bambaataa, the group have also highlighted songs that helped form the sonic foundations of the nascent hip hop sound as it emerged and evolved in New York in the early 1980s, including the breaks-goldmine of MFSB’s Love Is The Message and Kraftwerk’s game-changing Trans-Europe Express, a song rarely licensed for any compilation.

The unique work of art for the record has been designed by one of the most exciting names on the LA art scene, Reena Tolentino. A visual artist and actor, RT’s work rose to prominence after her acclaimed mural of late basketball icon Kobe Bryant. In addition to providing artwork and portraits of RUN DMC for the project she has also reinterpreted one of the most iconic hip-hop logo’s of all time with a rework of the classic RUN DMC logo.

The release continues to cement 12on12’s reputation for unique ‘vinylworks’ and bespoke collectors’ editions that live at the intersection of music, art and pop culture, providing a unique canvas for cultural icons to curate the soundtracks to their lives.

With global trends growing around nostalgia and legacy artists dominating consumption both within rising vinyl sales and across streaming platforms, 12on12 continue to prove themselves an exciting creative brand capturing an incresingly powerful part of the zeitgeist.

ABOUT RUN DMC

INNOVATORS. ORIGINATORS. RUN DMC’s influence on the music of the new millennium goes every bit as deep as that of Elvis Presley or The Beatles. With a career that has spanned over 30 years and 30 million record sales, the trio set the stage not only for themselves, but for an industry, for a generation and for generations to come.

Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and the late great Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell roared out of Hollis, Queens with 1983’s “It’s Like That”/”Sucker MCs”, transforming R&B party funk with a new combination of sparse beats and hard production textures. Within a year, they took another giant step by combining rock guitar with hip-hop in the single “Rock Box.”

The huge popularity of RUN DMC produced rap’s first gold album (RUN-DMC, 1984) and its first platinum album (King of Rock, 1985). RUN DMC’s 1986 album ”Raising Hell” caused an even greater cross-cultural explosion with their hard-core hip-hop classic “My Adidas” and collaboration with Aerosmith on “Walk This Way” – a track that redefined genre boundaries and put rap in the Billboard Pop Top 10 for the first time ever.

RUN DMC have always been trailblazers, the first rappers to appear on MTV, American Bandstand, Saturday Night Live and the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. They were the first rap act nominated for a Grammy Award (Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group, 1986 for Raising Hell). Tragedy struck the group when Jam Master Jay was murdered in his recording studio on October 30, 2002. Shocked and saddened by the loss of their band mate Run and DMC went their separate ways. As they told the media, “We lost our drummer, we’re not RUN DMC without Jay.”

In 2009 RUN DMC were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and in 2011 Rolling Stone named them one of the 50 Greatest Artists of All Time. Rev Run and DMC started performing together again at select shows to help bring attention and funding to the Jam Master Jay Foundation, continuing to inspire new generations of fans with the same verve they showed over three decades

SFERA EBBASTA × J BALVIN - “BABY”

SFERA EBBASTA ×  J BALVIN – “BABY”

After the release of his album FAMOSO, today international superstar Sfera Ebbasta unloads the video for the standout single, “Baby” with J Balvin.

WATCH OFFICIAL VIDEO HERE

The new album, FAMOSO, released on November 20th, has been welcomed internationally with a standing ovation. All 13 tracks debuted at the top 200 Global Spotify chart while disintegrating all past records and achieving new heights for Italian albums. It received 16M streams in 24 hours while climbing the first 13 positions in the Italian top 50 chart on Spotify. FAMOSO is the most-streamed album ever on release date on Spotify and the 2nd most-streamed album Globally.

Today, Sfera Ebbasta flexes as a major player in the game with the release of the video for the international focus track, “Baby” with J Balvin.

J Balvin expressed the wish to see the birth of a truly international Latin gang, an artistic partnership between Italy, Colombia and the whole Latin world. “Baby” marks the beginning of a journey destined to bring Italian music where it has rarely landed. Sfera and J Balvin met when the king of the trap made a remix of the track “Machika”. In the film Famoso, directed by Pepsy Romanoff and distributed worldwide by Amazon Prime video, the Colombian artist talks about his relationship with Sfera:

“At the time of the “Machika” remix I didn’t know him personally, but now we’re friends. There is nothing planned, no strategy, just a true friendship. One day I went to Italy, I looked at what was happening in the music world and there were 5 Sfera tracks at the top of the chart. I said to myself: and where is my music? (Editor’s note laughs) – and then adds – It’s a real movement! And for this, I respect my little brother because yes … he is like a brother to me! He is a big star in Italy and I think he will soon be one everywhere. He has all my support and my respect. I really think we are at the beginning of a real worldwide Latin gang and I want to see my people win! ” – J BALVIN

In the video directed by Mattia Benetti and produced by Ocean Code Studio, we see Sfera and J Balvin together for the first time, immersed in a parallel universe, in those fantasy worlds where everything seems possible; golden statues emerging from the sea, sharks swimming over the city skyline and purple skies where gigantic planets stand out in a magnetic, almost hypnotic way. Between mermaids swimming above Sferas car and landscapes like el dorado, the song, produced by Sky Rompiendo, with its up tempo makes us understand why it has been chosen as the first international focus single and how it is possible that in only four days after its release, “Baby” is already a hit. The track is already at #1 on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Youtube Italy.

Under the artistic direction of Charlie Charles, FAMOSO is the most important album in Sferas career, a boy who comes from nowhere and has never had help of any kind and who together with extraordinary teamwork, managed to become the most important Italian recording phenomenon in recent history. Results such as the one achieved by “Baby,” certify his entry into the very small circle of European artists who are truly recognized, respected, and above all listened to in the world. However, knowing the hunger of Sfera Ebbasta, his desire to continually improve himself, we are only at the beginning.

About Doja Cat

Born and raised in L.A., Doja Cat made her first upload to Soundcloud in 2013 at just 16-years-old. She developed a knack for music by studying piano and dance as a kid and listening to the likes of Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and more. Soon, she went from obsessing over Catwoman (the Halle Berry version) to “crate digging” on YouTube. The budding talent taught herself Logic and how to compose on a midi controller.

Signed to RCA during 2014, she has released her Purrr! EP and followed with her debut album Amala in spring 2018, but it was her August 2018 release of “Mooo!” which catapulted her into the mainstream and was met with critical acclaim. With co-signs from Chance The Rapper, Katy Perry, Chris Brown and J.Cole among others.

2019 was a big year for Doja, proving she is a mainstay artist with the release of tracks like “Tia Tamera” ft. Rico Nasty and her breakout hit “Juicy” ft. Tyga which appears on her sophomore album Hot Pink, released in November. She made her late night debut performance of the track on Late Night with Seth Meyers. She was also named the iHeart Radio “On The Verge” artist, with “Juicy” reaching #1 on the Rhythm radio chart and top 10 at Urban. Hot Pink has received rave reviews in the press and continues to be recognized as her strongest work to date with over 2 billion streams and video views combined.

2020 kicked off another amazing year for the hybrid artist with the success of her single “Say So” continuing to climb the charts. She delivered electrifying performances of the track on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Voice and The Late Late Show with James Corden. The track is RIAA certified 3x platinum, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, #1 at Top 40 radio for 5 consecutive weeks, reached #1 at Rhythm radio, has over 216 million video views, and over 30 million Tik Tok videos created. Gucci Mane is currently climbing the radio charts sitting inside the Top 15 at Top 40 radio and reached Top 5 at Rhythm. Doja was also the first Vevo LIFT artist to be announced for 2020.

Slatt Zy - East Lake Projects

Slatt Zy – East Lake Projects

Rising Chattanooga, Tennessee, rapper Slatt Zy introduces the world to the neighborhood that shaped him to be the 18-year-old man he is today through his new project, East Lake Projects, out today on 100k Management. The release is named after the housing development he was raised in alongside his musically inclined family of 11 brothers and sisters. Fans of Slatt Zy will quickly recognize his effortless flow, which moves from melodic, growled bars to more mournful, introspective lines. Listen HERE. Watch the new video directed by Jordan Spencer for  “First Year (feat. Pooh Shiesty) HERE.

“East Lake Projects is where I became a man. It was tough to value life there, and getting over that made me a man. To me it ‘s more than projects – it ‘s my family, and we got through together. 17 people in 2 rooms, 12 people sleeping on one floor ߝ granny, 11 siblings, auntie. We been through struggles together.” Says Slatt Zy.  “We been through everything -shoot outs, hungriness, shoeless, people dying. East Lake Projects is where all my problems came from and made me grown early, but my happy times came from there too. I couldn ‘t imagine any other way to be. The projects may have given me scars and bruises, but also motivated me to be the nigga I am today. “

While Zy ‘s April debut, Zy Story, introduced audiences to his unique vocal approach and innate ear for melody, East Lake Projects showcases a more vulnerable, personal side of the rapper. On the first track,  “Straight Out Them Projects, “Zy immediately establishes the tone of the record. Over melancholic piano chords, he sings,  “We come from poverty / We had to find a way / Straight out them projects, ain ‘t had shit, I had to find a way. “East Lake Projects is deeply indebted to Zy ‘s childhood, and on the project, he aims to shine a light on the community he grew up in and the violence that still plagues it.

Zy offered a preview of East Lake Projects back in October when he released the video for  “How It Go (feat. Hotboii),” which is at nearly a million views. On the track, Zy takes on the vivacious hook while Hotboii delivers smooth melodic verses. The song is one of the more playful, freewheeling cuts on the project, showing that even when Slatt Zy is excavating his emotions, he ‘s able to turn up too.

Zy prides himself on his incredible work ethic and desire to provide his family a better life. In less than a year, he has released over 10 music videos, in addition to Zy Story. With early support from HotNewHipHop, WorldStarHipHop, SAY CHEESE!, Lyrical Lemonade, and ELEVATOR MAGAZINE, it ‘s clear Slatt Zy is on the way up. Zy has come a long way from sleeping on the living room floor with 11 other people and having to attend school with no shoes to now trading in his braces for his first set of diamond grillz.

5 Ways to Make Your Long-Distance Relationship Work

Unlike a few decades ago when maintaining a long-distance relationship was an expensive venture, technology has made things easier. Initially, financing long-distance calls was a tough call, but with services like Skype and Facetime, communication is now more affordable and direct. And while it might look like technology has finally bridged the gap, people in long-distance relationships will tell you it doesn’t make up for everything. The lack of proximity and regular touch makes such relationships emotionally tough.

And with many of us either in long-distance relationships already or planning to get into one, it’s vital that we discuss how to go about making it work. According to Sandra Larson, a nurse and relationship expert, long-distance, and geographically close relationships do not differ much.

“In some cases, dating someone you’re not always in the same house can be better,” she says. Sandra emphasizes the importance of trust, saying it’s the root cause of all the issues in long-distance relationships. “Once you develop trust, it doesn’t matter how far your partner is.”

So, will your long-distance relationship survive? What should you do to make it work? Here are 5 ways to make your relationship work, regardless of the distance:

  1. Quality Over Quantity

People in a long-distance relationship cannot have a high quantity of communication compared to couples living together. However, because of the limited contact and defined communication times, you’re likely to have more quality communication. Sandra recommends using the time you have wisely. Focus more on quality rather than quantity. “If you have routine bedtime conversations, give a little thought beforehand to the most important details of your day to share.

Avoid clogging the call with the unnecessaries or bringing back conflict topics.” Most importantly, realize the deficits of a phone/video call and plan accordingly to ensure you say the things you mean to say. You might also have to be more deliberate in your words as you’ll be lacking the benefits of facial expression and physical touch.

  1. Pay Attention and Prioritize Active Listening

When the phone is your only means of communication, it can be hard to make your partner feel like you’re listening. Actively listening involves being alert to pick any abnormalities or changes in your partner’s tone or behavior. Most importantly, it entails letting your partner talk without immediately shifting the focus back to yourself. Whether it’s celebrity gossip or at-work drama, let them finish and try to offer relevant responses while encouraging them to tell you more.

If you pick any changes in your partner’s voice or demeanor, encourage them to tell you more about it and offer a listening ear. If it’s something you can help with from afar, go ahead and offer a helping hand.

  1. Be Creative

According to Sandra, never be too reliant on technology. Of course, it’s an important part of the relationship, but there’s more to do. “A good relationship takes a great deal of compromise and creativity. Try new ways to do things that you’d have otherwise done physically together to bridge the gap. For instance, you can both use applications like ‘Rabbit’ and ‘Couple’ that let you watch Netflix together and share life updates.

You can also read the same books. That will enhance the feeling of connecting through shared experiences regardless of how many miles you are away from each other.

  1. Make Plans Together

According to research, long-distance relationships are more satisfying when there’s a clear plan for the future. How long are we going to be apart? How open to moving are you, and is your partner open to the same? Whether it’s the short-term plans of places to visit when you see each other next time or the grand plan of when you’ll make the relevant adjustments to stay together, making these plans as a unit gives you something to look forward to.

Most importantly, make sure your goals and aspirations for the relationship are the same. What happens eventually? An engagement? Moving in together? Ensure that you continually work out a plan for the end game together.

  1. Be Mindful of Your Partner

Unfortunately, some things happen that are out of our control. Everything from unforeseen work commitments to everyday inconveniences, no one’s immune. So, when you can’t pick their call, remember to follow up with a text message or voice note explaining that you’ll get back when you can. The distance can be emotionally tasking, but things are much easier when there’s clear and direct communication.

Send your partner random and thoughtful gifts when they least expect it. It doesn’t have to be on their birthday or your anniversary either. Being mindful of your partner conveys your commitment and respect for the relationship while igniting a lasting impression.

That’s it! Long-distance relationships don’t have to be hard. It’s okay when things aren’t perfect, but there’s always a way to make things work. So, prioritize quality communication, pay attention, be creative, make plans together, and most importantly, be mindful of your partner. Trust me! It shouldn’t be that hard.

New Music Video for Celeste – A Little Love

Celeste today shares the video for her new track “A Little Love” released via Interscope Records. The song was written and recorded for the UK John Lewis and Waitrose Christmas advertising campaign called “Give A Little Love” and has been widely praised as a Christmas classic in the making. “A Little Love” entered the Top 40 in the UK Official Charts the week after release as well as the Top 100 in Amazon and Apple Music Charts and #1 on the Shazam Chart. The John Lewis and Waitrose ad itself has had over 10 million combined views to date.

YouTube Music EMEA has today named Celeste as the next talent in their Artist On The Rise series, which celebrates and supports the most exciting new artists in the UK. The video for “A Little Love” was directed by Silent Tapes Films – who also directed the haunting video for Celeste’s “Strange”- and premiered on YouTube this morning.

“A Little Love” is the first original song commissioned by John Lewis and Waitrose for their Christmas advertising campaigns which – inspired by the kindness shown by the British public during the pandemic – encourages viewers to give a little love to others. Two new joint ads encourage the nation to spread kindness and help raise £4m for two charities – Home-Start and FareShare. A further £1m will be donated by Waitrose and John Lewis branches to local charities supporting families in need. Every time “A Little Love” is downloaded Celeste and Polydor Records will make a donation to the campaign.

Brit-Award winning Celeste was approached by John Lewis Partnership and asked to write a song which reflects the poignant theme of this year’s ad campaign, which celebrates kindness as the nation is encouraged to “Give A Little Love.” Celeste says, “I felt honoured to be asked to take part. I wanted to create something that felt classic but still true to who I am as a writer and performer.”

Commenting on the song Claire Pointon, Customer Director for John Lewis said; “We immediately knew that Celeste was right for our campaign. Her voice is timeless and magical. Her song blew us away.”

CELESTE’S ACHIEVEMENTS

The song marks another milestone in the ascension of the British-Jamaican soul singer and songwriter who won both the BRITs Rising Star Award and BBC Music’s Sound last year and is the breakthrough artist of 2020. It follows the release last month of “Hear My Voice” which was co-written with Golden Globe®-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton and is the focus track of the Netflix film The Trial of the Chicago 7, written and directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Aaron Sorkin. “Hear My Voice” is predicted by Variety to be an Oscars contender for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards next year.

Covid Risk Increases During Holidays

By Hannah DiPilato

With the holiday season quickly approaching, Covid cases are skyrocketing all over the country and officials are advising people to social distance this holiday season.

According to CNN, more than 12 million people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and over 260,000 people have died. With those that are elderly or immune-compromised, the risk of complications due to COVID-19 is higher.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated the safety guidelines for traveling. “CDC is recommending against travel during the Thanksgiving Day period,” Dr. Henry Walke, Covid-19 incident manager for the CDC, said in a conference call.

“Right now, especially as we are seeing exponential growth in cases and the opportunity to translocate disease or infection from one part of the country to another leads to our recommendation to avoid travel at this time,” Walke continued.

The CDC has also recommended people stay in their immediate households for the holiday season. Even without traveling across the country, seeing those you don’t usually see can lead to a breakout of coronavirus.

Walke said he does not plan to visit his own family for the holiday season. “I haven’t seen my parents since January. I’m staying home and that’s been difficult as I have older parents who would like to see me and who would like to see my children as well,” he said.

“It’s been a long outbreak, almost 11 months now, and people are tired. And we understand that and people want to see their relatives and their friends in the way they’ve always done it,” he continued, “But this year, particularly, we’re asking people to be as safe as possible and limit their travel.”

If you plan to gather with those outside of your immediate household, there are important precautions to take to prevent the spread of coronavirus. First, keep gatherings as small as possible. Many states have restrictions in place which limit the number of people allowed to gather inside. Check your local and state regulations to ensure your gathering is following the laws.

The CDC’s Dr. Erin Sauber-Schatz said, “The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving this year is at home with the people in your household.”

If possible, move your Thanksgiving dinner outside. Coronavirus is less likely to spread outside where there is better ventilation than indoors. Although many places are getting cold, tell your guests to load up with blankets and winter gear. If it’s too cold for an outside gathering, keep the windows open to ventilate the area.

One of the most important and simplest things you can do to stop the spread of Covid is to wear a mask. In many states, masks are required in public places and Thanksgiving dinner should be no exception. Keep your mask on unless eating and remain six feet away from other guests.

It is also recommended that guests handle making their own food and bringing their own utensils to Thanksgiving dinner this year. This prevents the spread of germs as well as cross-contamination between households. Remember to frequently wash your hands when cooking, eating and generally to stop the spread of germs.

Covid cases are rising in communities as well as healthcare networks which is making the virus even harder to handle. Many more people are becoming hospitalized due to the virus and healthcare workings are at risk.

According to the Associated Press, 905 staff members at The Mayo Clinic Health System have been infected with coronavirus in the last two weeks. The Mayo Clinic Health System is a network of clinics and hospitals in the midwest that are run by Mayo Clinic.

Executive dean of Mayo Clinic Practice, Dr. Amy Williams, said that most cases came from exposure within the community and not from work. “It shows how widely spread this is in our communities and how easy it is to get COVID-19 in the communities here in the Midwest,” she said.

If a virtual gathering isn’t in your Thanksgiving plans this year and you will be seeing people outside of your family in person, consider isolating yourself beforehand. Since the incubation period of the virus is 14 days, a negative test result doesn’t necessarily mean a person does not carry the virus. Although a negative test result for coronavirus isn’t a sure sign of safety, it is an extra precaution everyone should add before mingling this holiday season.

Besides getting a coronavirus test, people should also consider a 14-day quarantine before seeing loved ones, or afterward. Isolating before seeing family will decrease the risk of spreading the disease within your holiday circle. If you plan on traveling for the holiday, consider isolating yourself after returning to prevent the spread of covid in your community.

The CDC has predicted this will be a dark winter and although a vaccine is in the works, it likely won’t be ready for mass distribution for a few more weeks. The holiday season will only lead to more cases with an increase in travel and group gatherings. As the weather in many places gets colder, inside gatherings are more likely to occur.

The CDC also recommends everyone get their flu shot for the upcoming flu season. By protecting yourself from the flu, you can help the healthcare system more easily manage the large influx of people going to the hospital.

In all states except Hawaii, Maine and Vermont, there is an active or imminent outbreak of coronavirus according to Covid Act Now. Even these three states are at risk for an outbreak. Currently, North Dakota has the highest number of new daily cases per 100,000 people with 159.6 cases. Wyoming and New Mexico follow closely behind.

Many states have separated their cities and counties into different zones depending on the number of Covid cases present. The restrictions in place for these areas are then determined by the number of cases.

New York City is starting to enforce tighter restrictions as cases start to rise. “In the next week or two we should see some substantial restrictions,” said Mayor, Bill de Blasio. “I think indoor dining will be closed, gyms will be closed.  I’m not happy about it. No one is happy about it but that’s what’s coming.” There is currently a 10 person gathering limit and a curfew for nonessential businesses between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Similarly, in Boston, Governor Charlie Baker has released a stay-at-home advisory for the same time frame. People are urged to only go out between these hours for essentials. Indoor gatherings are limited to 10 people while outdoor gatherings should be capped at 25 people.

Things on the west coast seem just as bleak. According to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health, restaurants, bars, wineries and breweries will be closed for dine-in services for at least three weeks. People in Los Angeles are being advised to stay home and have a similar curfew to Boston and New York City.

In some cities where cases are skyrocketing, restrictions are not being put in place as heavily as in California and New York. In Miami, restaurants are able to be open to 100% capacity and seat 10 people per table. Most things in Miami are reopened, but with restrictions such as requiring masks.

It is crucial for everyone to work together to bring covid cases back down over the coming weeks. As cases spike, it is important to remember that each state has precautions in place for a reason. Although many states won’t fully shut down, you can decide to continue social distancing and only going out for essentials.

lilspirit – serpent

Bay Area native lilspirit releases his latest single “serpent,” out now on 10K Projects/Internet Money Records. The single arrives at the end of the young pop-R&B artist’s biggest year yet. He dropped his debut album American Spirit in May, featuring hit track “droptopbitch” (8.9M+ Soundcloud streams), earning him acclaim from Ones to Watch, Office Magazine, Lyrical Lemonade and more. This year, lilspirit also appeared on Internet Money’s star-studded album B4 The Storm with his track “Devastated,” written and produced alongside Taz Taylor, Nick Mira and Alec Wigdahl. As lilspirit prepares to release his next project in early 2021, he wanted to treat fans to one last single before the holidays with “serpent.”

Born Geno Gitas, lilspirit grew up in the Bay Area and started playing piano as a little kid, later taking up guitar and drums. At the age of 14, he began producing his own music with the help of Garage Band and beats lifted from YouTube, mining inspiration from the underground rappers he’d discovered on SoundCloud. Soon after dropping out of high school his sophomore year, lilspirit headed down to L.A. to live with his sister—a dark-pop singer/songwriter who makes music under the name Ellise. Along with producing a number of songs for Ellise, lilspirit continued working on his own material, increasingly tapping into his incredible talent for crafting melodies

Last October, lilspirit put out a self-produced single called “Ugly,” a stark R&B-pop song speaking the unapologetic truth about a toxic relationship. In a drastic departure from the emo-rap-leaning tracks he’d previously released, “Ugly” showed off lilspirit’s soulful vocals and sophisticated sense of melody (a gift partly honed through his classical training in piano). As his following grew exponentially, the 19-year-old artist soon caught the attention of Internet Money Records/10K Projects, who signed lilspirit to a record deal just a month after “Ugly” premiered.

A highly prolific writer and musician who spends nearly every day in the studio—and recorded more than 80 songs in the past two months alone—lilspirit hopes that outpouring might leave a positive impact on his audience. “It touches my heart when fans reach out and tell me that a song I wrote helped them get through a hard time in their lives,” he says. “But at the same time, I’m not really thinking about all that when I’m writing. I’m just making music because I love to make music, so making any kind of song feels like therapy for me.”

The wait is over. BTS’ fifth studio album, Be, is out now featuring the record-breaking, hit single “Dynamite.” This is the band’s second album release of 2020 – following their release of Map of the Soul: 7 in February — marking the latest comeback for their already historic career. While live concerts and events came to a halt and BTS’ Map of the Soul Tour was canceled due to the pandemic, the band took this opportunity to spur their creativity. The end result was a sentimental and thoughtful eight-track album, including a spoken skit, that reflected on what the past year has been like for them.

As many sections in the US are entering a new state of crisis with rising Covid-19 cases, Be sends a reassuring message for fans to stay upbeat and hopeful with good-humored, singalongs to keep us afloat from the stress and fear that the pandemic has brought out of everyone.

Be opens with the band’s newest single, “Life Goes On.” The song’s theme revolved around the pandemic which is made clear in its music video — directed by band member Jeon Jungkook — that features various shots of the members reminiscing on their lives prior to Covid-19 beginning with the line “One day the world stopped.” Despite its melancholic tone, the lyrics are sweet with the promise that one day life will return back to normal, but until then it is important to find positivity among other things. Watch/Listen to “Life Goes On” Here.

Accompanying the single are more somber and vulnerable songs like “Blue & Grey” and “Fly To My Room” which explore the loneliness that many people have claimed to experience from the confinement of quarantine, especially in the beginning months of the pandemic. In an article by Time Magazine, public health experts stated that coronavirus has amplified the already rising problem of loneliness in the US and across the globe. These two songs not only demonstrate how these negative thoughts have been plaguing so many of us, but it also shows the close and understanding relationship between the band and its millions of fans worldwide.

“Skit” is a spoken word interlude placed right in the middle of the album which was originally recorded at the same moment that the group was celebrating becoming the first all-Korean group to rise to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August with their single “Dynamite.” It serves as the perfect tool to transition the mood of the album from emotional to cheerful with songs like “Telepathy” and “Dis-ease.”

  2. Fly To My Room
