Americup 2021

A post-pandemic basketball tournament unlike anything else in the world, FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2021, will arrive in Miami’s Bayfront Park next month. On November 12-14th, in the home of the Miami Heat, Hurricanes, and countless other legendary sports teams, FIBA, in partnership with VAUNT and in collaboration with LiveOne’s LiveXLive, will bring the US Men’s National Team and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Gold US Women’s National Team–along with 18 Countries represented by the best 3×3 national teams in Americas–to Miami for the first-ever 3×3 AmeriCup. A three-day hybrid pop-culture event, FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2021, will feature a star-studded in-person and virtual music festival, Music Lives: Ballerfest, LiveOne’s original franchise, with Afrobeats, EDM, Hip Hop, Latin, R&B and country music performances that will be livestreamed on LiveXLive. Additionally, the festival will include business panels on industry disruptions. The FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2021  will be a culture-shifting event, unlike any live, entertainment, and sporting event in the post-COVID world and the first in Miami’s history.

FIBA partnered with VAUNT, a sports and entertainment intellectual property (IP) development company that creates and produces alternative competitions and culturally relevant content, and Vaunt will collaborate with LiveOne’s LiveXLive, a global platform for livestream and on-demand audio, video, and podcast/vodcast content in music, comedy, sports, and pop culture. The collaboration will create the first-of-its-kind festival. The historic moment marks FIBA’s return to Miami nine years after the City hosted the final of the first-ever FIBA 3×3 World Tour and commences VAUNT’s multi-year relationship as the Local Organizing Committee with FIBA for the exclusive rights to the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup on the continents.

“I have fond memories of playing in FIBA competitions and representing my country on Team USA in 2001,” said VAUNT CEO, Roger Mason Jr. “Finishing my career with the Miami Heat and being able to bring FIBA AmeriCup 3×3 2021 to Miami is an honor. With the opportunities to coordinate the intersections of sports, music, technology, and competition, my journey as an NBA player and industry executive comes full-circle in the vision of this event.”

“The FIBA 3×3  AmeriCup 2021 will be a great way to expand the game across the globe,” FIBA’s office in the Americas Executive Director, Carlos Alves, said. “Having the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2021 in Miami is not only a homecoming for our regional head office, but more consequentially, a city encompassing the main traits of the game: urban, iconic, vibrant, international, and multicultural.”

“Music and sports naturally complement one another. LiveOne is excited to bring this emerging culture to Miami and a global audience,” Dermot McCormack, President of LiveOne. “Music Lives: Ballerfest will offer fans a truly unparalleled listening, interactive and live streaming viewing experience and will be the blueprint for the future of all hybrid festivals.”

“FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2021 is a great event to add to Miami’s entertainment scene,” said Miami Mayor, Francis Suarez. “Miami is the best City in America for sports fans and I’m so excited to be adding the AmeriCup to the list of what we have to offer fans—Miami welcomes FIBA, VAUNT, LiveOne, and all of those involved for three days of basketball, music, and entertainment.”

“After nine years, I’m excited to see the return of FIBA to Miami-Dade,” said Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava. “I know this event will draw leaders in sports, business, and entertainment to our community, inspiring young people who dream of becoming great athletes both at home and around the world. Miami-Dade is proud to host dynamic, global, world-class events like FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2021 as we work to build back our economy stronger than ever from the pandemic.”

“I’m excited to be a part of this historic event,” said legendary championship boxer and confirmed festival participant Floyd Mayweather. “It’s unique to have so many different people at the top-of-their-game coming together to one event and venue, especially in a great city like Miami.”

“It’s an honor to produce the 3on3 Celebrity Basketball games with VAUNT,” said Michael Mak, CEO & Founder of Celebrity Sports Entertainment “CSE”. The games will offer a fresh perspective to sporting events and will deliver their mission of creating meaningful content that shifts cultural norms for live entertainment. FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2021  is a dope way for celebrities and championship athletes to do what they love while interacting with their peers in business and entertainment.”

“I’m eager for people to experience this unique, innovative event that will pair Sports and musical performances,” said Darren Collison, former NBA player, AmeriCup attendee and youth clinics host. “I’m excited to host the youth clinical and the larger-than-life dreams and ambitions to participate amongst such esteemed sports industry leaders and athletes.”

The festival will be live-streamed on LiveXLive’s platform. Each day, from (9:30am  to 6:30pm EST), the event will be free. After 7pm, tickets will be required for entry for the end-of-the-day games and artist performances.

Q×A with Grandmother Edna

By: Emily Bunn

Showcasing over a dozen quilts and pillow covers, Grandmother Edna weaves stories of her own life and chronicles American history into her fabric fashioning. The complex interweaving of Edna’s own life fluidly connects with the United States’ grappling with enslavement, civil justice, and the quest for freedom. Depicting familial relations, as well as Edna’s encounters with Maya Angelou and Harry Belafonte, Grandmother Edna brings history to life with her quilting and storytelling. 360 Magazine spoke with the artist about the success of “Pillow Talk”, what inspires her to create art, and her upcoming CD release.

When did you begin creating fabric art?

Really, I mentally began in the 1950’s [while] sitting on a stairway watching my grandmother quilting. Then, maybe somewhere around the late 80’s, I decided to pick my poems up from midnight brown paper bags writings to hand sewn quilting.

What first got you interested in American history?

Being Black in the 50’s going with my grandmother to be the help/maid. And, in the 60’s, attending an all white school.

If you were to create fabric art to express our current moment in time, what would that design look like?

I have a new quilt on exhibit titled: “There Was A Time When The Universe Was FREE.”

What inspired you to start selling your quilted creations, pillow covers, and fabric art?

First of all, my quilts will never be for sale. My pillow covers sales will I hope help fund my free educational mobile classroom called “A Grandmother’s Pilgrimage, INC.” and my Grace Wisher Reparation Recovery Youth Scholarship Fund, LLC.

What inspired the name “pillow talk” for your exhibition?

I travel through the country as an invisible soul, no one seems to listen to anything I had to say. I decided to create a nightcap to relax the busy minds of everyone–and just maybe they would have time to hear me.

What has the reaction to “pillow talk” been like?

Amazing, fresh. It’s a newness in the art world.

What has working with the The Franklin County Visitors Bureau and The African American Historical Association of Western Maryland been like?

Exciting, cool and [represents] that change is coming, History being over-hauled. Janet and Ron have been great to partner with. I hope this [exhibit] will … improve that culture sock everyone keep avoiding in this America.

Your fabric art often reflects stories from your own life. What milestones from your life have you felt were most important to include in your artwork?

It’s that front door entry thing for me. The lost traditions of my people.

Are you currently working on any exciting fabric art projects that you can reveal to 360 Magazine’s readers?

Yes, I have my new CD on release. I have a file cabinet packed with poems to be quilted. I have faith the money will come. It’s appears to be easy, but it’s very hard to get paid for a job very well done. This is all fun and relaxing for me. I tell everyone to Just sew your emotions. Thanks 360 Magazine for this new media.

Nicky Jam Is Seduced By Temptation On His New Single Miami

Available on all digital music platforms

One of the greatest urban-music pioneers, Nicky Jam, unveils his new single Miami, a song that defines the limits of temptation in a long-lived relationship. Could Nicky Jam resist? To find out, fans will be able to enjoy their idol’s new music video on YouTube.

On many occasions, relationships are put to the test by the intervention of third parties, and this is what the new Nicky Jam’s song “Miami” is all about. A very common life story in which a man is tempted to betray his partner with another girl who represents something new, different, and forbidden.

The song has A-class producers such as Dj Luian, Mambo Kingz, and Neneto, under the wings of the record label La Industria INC/Sony Music Latin.

Miami premiers with its official music video, an unprecedented audio-visual production. The video is full of emotion and bright colors, under the lens of the master of urban genre music videos, Jessy Terrero.

“I think that all my fans are going to love this song. It’s all about real-life experiences. Those that can really connect you with the audience, because, unfortunately, heartbreaks are more common than happy endings,” said Nicky Jam.

The videoclip was produced by Cinema Giants INC, and as expected, it was recorded in the city of Miami, Florida. Filmmaker Jessy Terrero did not miss the opportunity to show off the best landscapes in the city, including luxurious balconies overlooking the ocean and bold Miami-style streets where nightlife is the real protagonist.

About Nicky Jam:

Nick Rivera Caminero, known as Nicky Jam, is recognized around the world as a pioneer of Latin urban music. At the age of 11, he recorded his first album …Distinto A Los Demás (Different from the Rest), which attracted the attention of DJs and artists in Puerto Rico.

As a young adult, Nicky Jam quickly rose to the top of his genre with radio hits including “Yo No Soy Tu Marido (I’m Not Your Husband),” “Me Voy Pa’l Party (I’m Leaving for the Party),” “Fiel A Tu Piel (Faithful to Your Skin)” and “La Combi Completa (The Complete Package),” among others. He toured the world and became one of Latin urban music’s first international stars. He was obligated to stop his music career for three years because of some serious personal problems. In 2013, he relaunched with a new image, coming back stronger than ever. He notched five radio hits: “Piensas en ME (You Think About Me),” “Curiosidad,” “Juegos Prohibidos (Forbidden Games),” “Voy a Beber (I’m Going to Drink)” and the global chart-topper, “Travesuras (Mischief).”

In February 2015, Nicky Jam teamed up with Enrique Iglesias to release “El Perdón (Forgiveness)”, his most internationally acclaimed single to date. Tallying over one million YouTube views on the day of its release, “El Perdón” was #1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart for 30 weeks (second longest-running single in the chart’s history). In January 2016, Nicky released “Hasta el Amanecer (Until Dawn),” which gave him the biggest Latin song of the year for the second consecutive year.

In 2017 Nicky Jam released “El Amante (The Lover)” and his very first solo album Fénix. The single “El Amante” quickly became an international hit, reaching 7x platinum, while the album went 11x platinum. The same year, he made his acting debut in the Vin Diesel blockbuster XXX: Return of Xander Cage.

In 2018 he earned three Latin GRAMMY nominations and appeared on the all-star remix of “Te Bote (I Dumped You),” whose video became the most watched on YouTube in any genre during 2018. Additionally, Nicky Jam had the honor of recording and performing “Live It Up,” featuring Will Smith and Era Istrefi, for the official soundtrack of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

His autobiographical series El Ganador (The Winner) premiered on Netflix at the end of 2019, as well as his album Íntimo.

Nicky Jam returned to the big screen in early 2020 with a role in Bad Boys for Life, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. His most recent single “Fan de tus Fotos” has generated great impact in the music industry, garnering more than 25 million views within a month of its release.

The Business Coalition for the Equality Act

Top North Carolina Businesses Register Unprecedented Support for the Equality Act as More than 400 Major U.S. Corporations Join Coalition to Urge Protections for LGBTQ People

The Business Coalition for the Equality Act is believed to be the largest business coalition to ever come together to speak out in support of legal LGBTQ equality

Today, the Business Coalition for the Equality Act announced it has grown to include more than 400 major U.S. corporations (including 13 major North Carolina corporations) calling for the urgent passage of the Equality Act–federal legislation that would modernize our nation’s civil rights laws by including explicit protections for LGBTQ people, as well as improve protections for women, people of color, and people of all faiths. The announcement signals unprecedented support for the Equality Act among America’s business leaders, who join a majority of Americans, hundreds of members of Congress, hundreds of advocacy organizations, and more than 60 business associations–including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers–in endorsing the federal legislation.

North Carolina corporations that have joined the coalition include Cargo Transporters, Inc., ABB Inc., ViiV Healthcare Company, GlaxoSmithKline LLC, Truist Financial, Advance Auto Parts (Advance Holding), Red Hat Inc., Ingersoll-Rand Company, Food Lion, LLC, Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, Bank of America Corp., Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Replacements Ltd. They employ 457,002 people across the state, have 13 headquarters in the state, and generate $151.9 billion in annual revenue for North Carolina.

As a whole, the 416 member companies of HRC’s Business Coalition for the Equality Act represent a major swath of America’s economic engine, with member companies overseeing business operations in all 50 states, company headquarters spanning 33 states and a combined $6.8 trillion in annual revenue. The 416 members of the coalition collectively employ more than 14.6 million people in the United States. The Business Coalition for the Equality Act is believed to be the largest business coalition to ever come together to speak out in support of legal LGBTQ equality. The largest former effort was the business amicus brief for marriage equality, which included 379 businesses.

“We are seeing growing support from business leaders because they understand that the Equality Act is good for their employees, good for their businesses and good for our country. Employers care about their employees’ ability to rent an apartment, send their kids to school, visit the dentist, and pick up the groceries free from discrimination. They realize that when LGBTQ employees and their family members are protected in their daily lives, it makes them more secure and confident in their jobs, and also more productive,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Thank you to every company that is speaking up and advocating for the passage of the Equality Act. It’s time for the Senate to listen to the business community and the public and pass this long overdue legislation.”

The Equality Act ensures everyone in America, including LGBTQ people, are protected from harassment and discrimination in all areas of life. Currently, even if an LGBTQ person works for a company that provides clear non-discrimination protections and inclusive cultures, that employee and their family members can still experience discrimination in other areas of life and have no legal recourse. In the majority of states–29 states in total–that lack explicit nondiscrimination protections, these employees can be denied healthcare, loans, housing, and basic goods and services because they are LGBTQ.

The business community’s support reflects the broad and overwhelming support for the Equality Act in communities nationwide. New polling from Hart Research Associates found that 70 percent of Americans (including 50 percent of Republicans) support the Equality Act. Hundreds of members of Congress and more than 600 organizations, including the nation’s top leaders in civil rights, education, health care, and faith organizations have also endorsed the legislation.

Corporate endorsements for the Equality Act have more than doubled since the Equality Act passed the U.S. House in 2019.

Business Support for the Equality Act

American Airlines: “American’s mission of taking care of people on life’s journey includes making the case for greater equity and inclusion, two of our company’s core values that are also critical to our success,” said Molly Wilkinson, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and PRIDE EBRG Executive Sponsor. “That’s why we’re proud to join with the Human Rights Campaign and this broad coalition of businesses in support of the Equality Act, a measure that would protect Americans from the kind of discrimination, harassment and unequal treatment that runs counter to our purpose. American has proudly stood with the LGBTQ community for decades and will continue to advocate for full inclusion, equity and protection under the law, because all of our team members and customers deserve to feel welcome and safe.”

Levi Strauss & Co.: “Levi Strauss & Co. is proud to support the Equality Act,” said Anna Walker, Vice President, Public Affairs. “We have a long history of supporting equal rights for the LGBT community, from being the first Fortune 500 company to extend health benefits to unmarried domestic partners more than 20 years ago, to being the only California business in 2007 to file an amicus brief with the California Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage. The time has come in this country for full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. Ensuring fairness in our workplaces and communities is both good for business and simply the right thing to do.”

Dow: “Dow has been a proud supporter of the Equality Act since it was first introduced; and we continue advocating for the full inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in the eyes of the law,” said Louis Vega, President, Dow North America and VP Government Affairs & Advocacy, North America. “Ensuring equality and opportunity for all is not only the right thing to do as a matter of human decency, it is good for society and business.”

IBM: “A workforce that reflects the diversity of today’s society drives new ideas and innovation,” said Carla Grant Pickens, Global Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. “At IBM, we seek to hire the most talented individuals regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or other personal characteristics. We also believe that equal protections should extend beyond an employer’s four walls, which is why IBM stands with HRC in endorsing the Equality Act. It’s time that civil rights protections be extended to LGBT+ individuals nationwide on a clear, consistent, and comprehensive basis.”

Marriott International Inc.: “At Marriott, we believe that every individual, including those in the LGBTQ community, should feel welcome, safe and respected when they enter one of our properties. As a global hospitality leader, our principles of non-discrimination extend to all travelers, and include sexual orientation and gender identity. That is why we are proud to join with the Human Rights Campaign and support passage of the Equality Act, to help ensure equality under the law as well as under our own roof.”

The New Wave of Digital Working Nomads

By Vaughn Lowery

As of late, tons of youthful business people have commenced to take the path less taken – entrepreneurship. With an insurgence of virtual office spaces, this demographic, primarily generations X, Y as well as Z, has found a means to make money while on the go. These digital nomads run businesses which heavily impact society and provide an array of services which are unparalleled by most industry giants like Google, Amazon and Apple. In this piece of prose literature, you will find that a virtual office for digital nomads is the way to go.

Virtual office spaces offer an incubator-like environment where small to medium size businesses as well as independent contractors can freely roam the world, embarking on adventure while creating personal connections which last a lifetime. Subsequently, personal contact and the ability to be able to share an intimate exchange is what successful business owners constantly recite in tons of authoritative magazines like Entrepreneur, Inc. and Fast Company.

Being in a high powered independent contractor position has its share of ups and downs. The number one downfall of not receiving a solid location has always been the inability to having packages securely delivered to a location. The problem has been easily worked with virtual offices as a receptionist can answer the phone, take messages and store packages on behalf of your emerging brand. Some virtual offices can store packages (small or large) for up to 30+ days without having to return to sender. Storage fees may apply. And, if all else fails, you can grant them the ability to have the package forwarded to another address so that you can have access to your mail sooner than expected.

Not to cite, a ton of these virtual facilities have a network throughout the world and with a monthly subscription package you will have access to many of their locations. In addition, if you are in penury of a quiet meeting area, you can book the venue’s conference room for a few hours. Many of them are well-fitted with wifi and video conferencing as well.

Another pro of having a rotating office is that most of them come with office managers as well. Having someone to restock the printer with ink/paper, order supplies and execute events is almost ideal for someone seeking additional ways to connect with and accost new business. Just imagine if you’re a freelance journalist, graphic designer and/or advisor, you could attend a virtual office promotion and potentially meet a new client. In the past, many virtual offices have implemented office gatherings to increase office morale. Some of the best office gatherings have included spirit/wine tastings, game nights and office ice breakers. Moreover, traveling chefs and restaurants can also set up food tastings on the premise in hopes that you visit their establishments while on lunch breaks or dinner meetings.

Instead of orchestrating a webinar on smart business practices, many virtual office spaces have started to arrange roundtables. A roundtable is an opportunity to have a group of notable community leaders and business owners come into the facility to hold panels on ways you can reestablish your brand, redesign your website, effectively conduct public relations and marketing strategies as well as lower customer retention.

These type of group discussions can strike up meaning conversations while helping you increase revenue. Being in the presence of other individuals whom are having difficulty with maintaining their business while on the go, can help those in need of assistance find solutions to fix issues right away.

In short, people who work while on the go can finally be at rest knowing that their phones are being answered and packages are being received/stored and in some cases forwarded to another secure location. All this can materialize for a nominal monthly subscription fee while you enjoy all that your destination has to offer – outdoor adventure, food and nightlife.

Starting a business with your spouse, whether it’s a restaurant, real estate agency, consulting firm, tech startup or other type of company, can be a wonderful adventure to share together as a couple.

But there are challenges that go with running a business with your spouse. If you want to avoid some of the potential personal and financial risks of entrepreneurship, and make the most of the upside, it’s important to plan ahead and work as a team.

Here are a few key tips and strategies to keep in mind when starting a business with your spouse.

Decide on Your Choice of Business Structure

One of the first decisions you should make is choosing your business entity structure to incorporate your business and make your business “official” in the eyes of the law.

There are several options for a choice of business entity, depending on your goals and what type of business you want to run. One of the most popular entity types is the limited liability company (LLC), which can help potentially protect your personal assets in case of a lawsuit against the business. If you have big growth goals for your business and potentially want to go public with an Initial Public Offering, a C Corporation might be a better choice.

Whether you set up an LLC, S Corporation, C Corporation or Partnership, it’s important to create a registered business entity for your company. This will help you get a business bank account, build business credit and potentially protect your personal finances from some of the worst-case scenarios of being in business.

Will You Be Co-Owners?

As part of setting up your official business entity, you need to be ready to clarify the ownership responsibilities of the two of you as spouses. Is this a business that one spouse is mostly going to be in charge of and the other is serving in more of a support role? Or are you both equal business partners? Will one spouse be an employee of the company, or will both spouses be listed as co-owners of the company?

There are certain paperwork complexities and tax implications that depend on whether both spouses are listed as co-owners of the company. For example, if one spouse is listed as the owner and the other spouse is an employee, the employee spouse might have to pay taxes at a higher rate on their income from the company, compared to what they would owe if they could treat their income as qualifying pass-through business income (which, depending on your income and business type, might qualify for a 20% tax deduction).

There is no single “right answer” for every situation, but talk with your tax advisor before you start a business with your spouse. It might be advantageous for tax purposes to both be listed as owners of the company.

Separate Your Business and Personal Finances

Once you have your business entity established, it’s time to get your official Employer ID Number from the IRS and get set up with a business bank account, including a checking account, savings account and business credit card.

Keep your business finances totally separate from your personal finances. Don’t pay for business expenses with your personal money, or vice versa. This will help you stay in compliance with the law and maximize your business tax deductions.

Create a Shared Vision and Strategic Plan

Make sure both of you have a shared strategic vision for what you want your business to be. Create a business plan. Work together on a mission statement, business name, business tagline and logo. Everything that represents your business should represent both of you; you’re a team, and your business should reflect that.

Clarify Your Roles and Responsibilities

Make sure you both understand what your specific “jobs” are in running the business. Is one of you going to be the “face” of the company who’s out making sales and meeting customers, while the other works behind the scenes? Is one of you the Chief Technology Officer and the other is the Chief Operating Officer? Play to your strengths and be prepared to wear many hats.

Establish Work-Life Boundaries and Balance

Make sure you agree upon what business hours are, and when you can turn off your phones and laptops. Make time to go out for dinner and take vacations and talk about life, not just work. You’re not just business partners, you’re still a couple in love.
Running a business with your spouse should hopefully make your life feel bigger and better. Working hard together and investing in your shared future can help your love grow.

Portugal’s Paradise: Madeira

Welcome to Madeira- a wonderful destination that has a warm year-round climate, dramatic volcanic landscapes, world-class wines, incredible hiking, a wide mix of lodging and so much more. Now closer than ever to the United States – is a the prefect warm weather winter/spring destination. All the wonders of Europe, the landscapes of a semi-tropical volcanic island, and as close as the Caribbean.

The Madeira Islands, an archipelago 750 miles southwest of Lisbon in the Atlantic Ocean, have a nearly perfect climate—warm in winter and never too hot in summer.

Ancient volcanic cliffs that rise dramatically from the sea dominate Madeira’s fascinating landscape. When Portuguese explorers came upon the Island of Madeira in 1420, they thought its dark cliffs signaled the gates of hell. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The steep rise creates six unique climate zones, each with its own beautiful flora and fauna that contribute to comparisons of Madeira with Hawaii.

The US and Madeira have long had strong bonds. Back in 1665, the British said all goods sold to its American colonies had to be shipped on British vessels from British ports, except products from Madeira. So, Madeira became the wine of America. America soon imported one-fourth of Madeira’s production of wine. George Washington supposedly drank a bottle a day. His inauguration was toasted with it, as was the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the launching of the USS Constitution. And, it became a popular destination for wealthy Americans, including US President Franklin Pierce, who spent three months on Madeira after leaving office in 1857.

Today, visitors come for the natural beauty, and they stay to experience the climate, cuisine, hiking, fishing, surf, and the old world charm of its cities and small towns. Madeira is the authentic jewel of European charm, where a visitor can experience fine wines, mountain hiking, or city culture—or easily all three in one day. Madeira has more than 200 years of hospitality traditions, famous visitors in the past included George Bernard Shaw and Winston Churchill. And, let me add that Madeira is a real value too, especially on the high end – with affordable lodging options, a wide range of dining, and overall very fairly priced.

American travelers are looking for a new destination. One that has a warm climate, history, wines, sun, great food, and a mix of the cosmopolitan with nature – that is Madeira. Please let me know if we can get you any additional information, or news about Madeira.

The Madeira Promotion Bureau promotes Madeira as a unique travel destination, with a focus on the travel trade. The Madeira Promotion Bureau is a non-profit association founded in August 2004 by a public entity and a private entity – the Regional Tourism Board and the Funchal Chamber of Commerce and Industry. www.apmadeira.pt/en

Getting to Madeira

Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic on the 32nd parallel north. It lies southwest of Lisbon, and several hundred miles west of the coast of Morocco. It is made up of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, as well as the Desertas and the Selvagem Islands.

Madeira has never been easier to get to. TAP Portugal offers easy connections from Lisbon – and with non-stop service to Portugal from 9 US cities on five airlines, getting a connection is easy. TAP now has a 1 stop from Boston, DC, New york and Newark, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco. It is a 1.5-hour flight from Lisbon, Porto or the Azores and it takes about 15 minutes to fly between the two islands in the group—Madeira and Porto Santo. Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport and the Porto Santo Airport serve the archipelago. The airport on Madeira is about a 30-minute drive to Funchal, the archipelago’s capital. Madeira has also become a major stop for cruise ships.

An overview

Madeira is a semi-tropical island rising from sea level to over 6,000 feet. Its steep pitch gives the island six distinct climate zones. The ancient Laurissilva cloud forest at the highest elevations is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, 2/3rds of Madeira is conservation land. It has mountain plains, valleys, high peaks, streams, rocky coastlines, and tidal pools. The island has a unique landscape accessed by a modern roadway system of new tunnels, and the older mountain roads they replaced that wind along the hillsides.

The south coast is sunny, and home to the cultivation of bananas, sugar cane, and grapes. Quaint fishing towns rise off the coast, where small hotels and villas welcome guests. The east coast is home to the historic towns of Caniçal, Machico and Santa Cruz. The wild Ponta de São Lourenço reserve snakes out into the ocean with great hiking and impressive views. The north coast is rugged, and features small towns and great surf. Santana is known for its straw roofed homes and great hiking and Sao Vincente has a series of lava caves. Inland, the massive peaks of Pico Ruivo and Areiro make for wild valleys and cliffs, with lots of grazing sheep and sweeping views. To the west lies the massive flat mountain plain of Paul da Serra, which feels like the surface of Mars, and the crater valley of Curral das Freiras. The sunny west coast runs from the tidal pools of Porto Moniz to the cliffs on the point at Cabo Girão.

Some 30 miles from Madeira is the smaller island of Porto Santo, famed for its long sandy beach, dunes, and vineyards. Porto Santo was where Portuguese ships first landed in 1419. Today, it earns the nickname the “Golden Island” from its undeveloped beaches and features a handful of hotels. Porto Santo’s beach is said to be one of the best in Europe, and its golden magnetized sands are famous for healing sore aches and pains. A new set of spas has recently opened to feature the sands, joined by a new golf course. Dry and sunny Porto Santo gets very little rain, perfect for a relaxing beach getaway any time of the year.

The uninhabited Desertas and Selvagens Islands are southwest and south of Madeira. The Desertas Islands’ three small, volcanic islands are a nature reserve. They serve as the last refuge of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), the rarest seal in the world. Another 180 miles south of Madeira are the Selvagens Islands, two groups of small islands also serving as a rich nature reserve for some of the rarest plants on the planet. Ideal nesting conditions make the islands a perfect bird sanctuary. Boat trips can be arranged, but environmental laws limit visitor numbers.

The City of Funchal

“The sea on one side, the mountains on the other, and between these two majestic splendors, the city smiles like a child sleeping, safe and warm, between its parents.” – Júlio Dinis

Funchal is a bustling city that rises from the Atlantic like an amphitheatre. It boasts forts, an historic old town, well-preserved churches, inviting museums, and regionally crafted wines. It is a walkable city with a pleasant harbor and a medieval cathedral more than 500 years old. Funchal is also perpetually sunny, but when the sun goes down, it’s easy to find entertainment, fine cuisine and music in its nightclubs, restaurants, and casino. The black cliffs surrounding Funchal are dotted with world-class hotels. There is an art museum, wicker toboggan rides, wineries, an open market, seaside parks… and so much more. The Lavradores Market features the colors, aromas, flowers, fruit and fish of Madeira. On the Rua de Santa Maria, a Painted Door Project has highlighted the oldest part of the city and its historic streets. Santiago Fort is the home to the Museum of Contemporary Art. And the Madeira Story Centre offers an interactive look at the archipelago.

According to Condé Nast Traveler, the Monte Palace high above the city, is one the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world. Alongside the flowers inspired by them, the island is known for its embroidery. Unique, handmade pieces come form a team effort that includes designers, perforators and skilled embroiderers.

Wines and Hiking

Madeira is famous for the wine that bears its name and, today, is produced in a number of varieties. Funchal is the center of wine production. Madeira can be a dry table wine, a sweeter dessert wine, or a classic after-dinner drink. Its production is part of the social and economic life of the island. Each September, festivals celebrate the grape harvest. Along the warm south coast, grapes are grown on tiered terraces.

From its earliest days as a producer of wine, the island built a system of water channels, called Levadas that brought water to the vineyards. Today, they also serve as a vast network of hiking paths that run passed waterfalls and spectacular views.

Declared World Heritage in 1999, the Levadas lead to amazing scenery that includes valleys, mountains and ocean views. The most famous include: Caldeirão Verde, 25 Fontes, Risco, Balcões, and the one that goes to Pico do Arieiro from Pico Ruivo, the highest point on the island, which rises to 6,100 feet.

If you go..

Madeira is an Autonomous Region of Portugal. The archipelago has two main inhabited islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, and two groups of uninhabited islands, Desertas and Selvagens. With a total area of 310 square miles, its capital is Funchal.

Madeira has a population of 255,650, which represents 2.5% of the total Portuguese population (10.5 million). The majority of the islanders live in and around Funchal. Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos, and Santana are the next biggest cities.

From the United States, direct (1-stop) flights are available out of cities including Boston, New York, Newark, Providence, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Miami, and Atlanta. Azores Airlines and TAP are the main Portuguese operators flying directly and at the best rates. United, American, Delta, Norwegian or British Airways also fly to the island via connections.

Traveling from the mainland, Porto, Lisbon and Ponta Delgada airports all have non-stop flights to Funchal. And, the low-cost airlines Easyjet and Transavia also offer good deals and service.
